    The first time I played Magic was with friends at a Girl Scout trip. Playing in a tent or on a hotel bed can be tough. I love some of these innovations, and I can really see benefits for using them with my own kids, especially the pockets for enforced organization. Also, love the potential for magnets with counter markings on them! We currently use a Card Kingdom mat with the kids that has all the areas marked out, but a few times we've had to get creative if say, we wanted to play in the car while waiting for an appointment or something - a firm surface would be fun!

    I do agree with the Prof’s assessment and grading on the Nomad overall. However, I will point out as an inaccuracy that there is a way to secure your deck and draw from it having watched the Openboosters gameplay with it yesterday. The elastic band that secures the Nomad closed can be rotated around and your deck placed underneath it, and looked to be more secure than the Windward strap solution. That being said, it then suffers the same pitfalls as every other component of the Nomad...”what if it wears out?”

    • @timberwolf8182
      @timberwolf8182 3 года назад +2

      I must mention, I agree with you but also the professor only talked about it being used in wind when it was made to be used in cars. Against wind i wouldn't trust it, but against the centrifugal force of a sharp turn? You bettcha. Felt like I needed to say this because i thought it was cool.

  • @ruaridhusher4373
    @ruaridhusher4373 3 года назад +122

    THe problem with you trying to hold it upside down: Most of the magnets (indeed mysterious) were not actually helping to hold the deck in place - it slid down and plunged all it's weight onto just one row. Maybe it would have worked had you kept your hand on it until it was upside down, but I agree it's unlikely and probably not very indicative of strength (like the stretch test, great if it passes but not really a problem if it fails)

    • @windwardplaymats1208
      @windwardplaymats1208 3 года назад +5

      Yep! We know that the deck strap probably wouldn't hold in a major earthquake or barrel roll (if you're in a plane or James Bond car chase), but I can confirm that it works in a strong wind. It was fun to watch Prof. improvise a shake test though :)

    • @novapheonix2211
      @novapheonix2211 3 года назад

      Yeah i was thinking jf you could somhow line special sleeves or have special inserts the magnet sits inside the sleeves and use a sheet of aluminum or something coated in rubber or something protective the mat can roll up but it can hold your sleeves like magnets on a fridge. Sorrybif it doesnt make sense. Im tired lol

    • @brendenbradach
      @brendenbradach 3 года назад +2

      I can't see a good way to add to sleaves without your whole deck sticking together. I more think they are right with most of the magnets the way they are but the mat seems like only a start of something better. But magnetic counters would be cool to make.

    • @CrimsonHiroX07
      @CrimsonHiroX07 3 года назад

      I personally believe part of problem with the hybridization idea is cost. Metal thread exists, but to interweave it into a play mat would make it more expensive than necessary. I'm not sure if it would hold designs as well or if would be able to use magnetic counters.

    • @brendenbradach

    • @Commander_Skullblade
      @Commander_Skullblade 3 года назад

      @Jeff L If you can't afford a webcam, you probably can't afford Magic cards. If that's true, then you probably won't be super invested in the game either.
      As for drafting, that requires other people. There's no real way to do that on a webcam or video call on your phone. So, you could either suck it up and play on Arena or Online, you could gather some friends together and do it in person. Masks suck, but if you're that desperate, sure. Or you can do without. Read a book. Play another game. Figure out why people like Candy Crush.
      People always have options. They just have to be motivated enough to use them.

    Looking at the Nomad, the tapping issues are solved by 'tapstones' that we used back in the day. The march of time since and counter/token frenzy generally invalidates capstones as markers, but that also invalidates 'mobile' boards in general.

    Windward was such an interesting concept, and honestly I see the creases as a positive cause it shows off how unique the playmat is without getting in the way of function.
    I also like how it neatly folds up so tightly in rows about the same size as a magic card which would be extremely easy to transport compared to having to roll up or fold a mat and find a circular place to keep it without crushing it.

I've been looking for solutions to being able to play outdoor, social distanced games with friends, and something like this that helps keep the cards from blowing away might be really useful: if it works as intended. If the magnets are nice and strong, I think it looks awesome. Definitely going to check it out.

    I guess the perfect playmat for me would be one that can stay flat on any surface (and therefore, making any surface flat). I'm thinking about something like a needle bed but upside down: The needles would fold inward with the objects beneath, stabilizing any non-flat surface. The mechanism would be the difficult part of this playmat: as I'm thinking that you would need the mat to be heavy enough to force the needles to retract, it would need to be rigid (or able to be made rigid) to not fold with the surface, and would need a mechanism that both lets you release all the needles to readjust the surface, lock them in to not go down again with your weight or that of game components, and retract them fully to make the mat foldable or use it as a regular mat.
    I guess you could do it with tech: a very small robot that could work as a compass for flatness (oscilloscope? I don't know the word in english) and that would control the needles to adjust the mat to any surface, just like a camera stabilizer. That would be a cool and very useful luxury item, I guess.

    I'm with you on the play mats with the features & functionality of the traditional design. Stitching to prevent fraying as long as it doesn't catch. When it comes to Ultra Pro, I want whatever card art I want on any type of playmat I want. That's what I wish they would figure out & they may never figure it out because too many choices just aren't profitable.

But maybe someone does and it's a nice option for if that becomes a thing at some point down the line. If you had stronger magnets, I'm sure your deck would have stayed.

      James from Windward here. Honestly, I never used or owned a playmat before working on a solution to playing MTG outdoors (for covid reasons). They always seemed pretty unnecessary. I didn't set out to design a playmat, but it just happened to be the best solution for keeping cards from blowing away in the wind! You'll notice that our materials are a little more luxury feeling, too. If I have to use a playmat, I like to enjoy the feeling of suede and leather, rather than neoprene. I hope you do end up buying one and getting to play outdoors with confidence :)

I love watching you compare different products and gush when something is outstanding. Another example is videos on card sleeves, almost all of them end with you praising dragon shield. At this point it's obvious to me how much you love the game and everything about it. Even though I myself don't play magic I feel grateful for your videos. Some of them convinced me to buy new things for the game that I play.

    Of the playmats shown, honestly the windward's the only real interesting one (The Imperium duelist is a normal playmat, just they offer a 2 player sized one, which is nice, but nothing special, considering other companies put out similar or even larger products in that vein,) and even then its role is niche.
    Nothing here will beat the limited edition Seb Mckinnon/Rebecca Guay collab mat or the Jon Avon mat I'm waiting for, or having custom commissioned art on a playmat like I can with Inked Gaming.

    The dragonshield "mat" has a lot of potential imo. With the left side area being for lands, maybe make that a little wider so it could hold tapped lands safely while closed with the pocket being just wide enough that you can still reasonably move the cards
    then on the right side, copy that, but instead of a pocket the whole way, have a little pop up cloth section that can hold the deck. Maybe even a second little pop up for the graveyard
