I was like "hey, 1 booster pack and a promo card, sounds neat, it will probably sell for around 5.99 dollars". And then... 17.99 LOL
No kidding. I was thinking "well, I would like a foil stonecoil and if its just like $6 I don't see what the harm is in buying just one"
I don't think the prof needs to worry about anyone buying these "on a lark". Unfortunately, I think the only people ignorant enough about magic to buy this product aren't people who watch TCC...
On a side note, way back in the day I did find some opened commander decks in a few of those plastic boxes, but after it became widely known, the big box stores were always sold out. By the time they restocked, those cases never had commander decks again. For a while I checked every time I went to the store, shaking the box around to get a look at a set symbol or card name, and all it ever was was dual decks and land packs from bundles. Those things haven't had any good contents in them since like 2015
This is exactly what I did and said when I saw them. Seasoned Magic players think alike after all!

I would be willing to say that the whole "It's aimed at parents" argument is exactly why it's a scam and not just a rip off.
They prey on those who doesn't know and all I can hope is that the price itself is enough to dissuade people from buying it, even if they don't know the real "value".
Exactly. That is unconscionable. End of story. Saying it’s only marketed to people who don’t know what the value is makes it worse! If that price doesn’t put someone off, tell them that you could get the SAME PRODUCT for 13 dollars cheaper by just buying a regular booster pack!

Yea man, whoever thought of this were intentionally going after these people...
Yeah, this is a totally unacceptable practice and needs to be stopped, I can Just imagine what a dad may think if they spend a little less then $20 USD on this only to find out that that cool card up front would have been sub $2 and the pack was $4 if he bought the same pack(being generous).
sad thing is that we can't educate everyone and the profits from these things are such a value that the company can still go on in this terrible practice
as @Daily gaming has said it makes parents not want to buy product because of these sale tactics
I don't disagree it's a terrible thing, but most grandma's or uncles or what have you would grab on of the cheapest things right?
The Target Magic shelves are always fully stocked, no one buys the product. So with all the options, even the uniformed wouldn't pick something that expensive and small right? Most I would imagine would grab the 4.19 option or go big and buy a fatpack.

These are packaged by Fairfield company. Never buy from Fairfield. They have a history of opening packs, removing cards, adding commons or cheap foils, and resealing them. Make that assumption and grab a pack or two and dont notice the price while being checked out is the likely problem... Then notice it on the receipt and ask to return... I noticed a lot of Targets wont take back TCG stuff due to people scamming returning product they resealed. Not a good situation all around.
If they are all in the wrong place tell the target associates about it. For me at least, they have always marked down the product to the price on the shelf, which has let me get collectors boosters for $4.25, and even some of these kinds of products for a reasonable price.

Lets just say it didn't make it to the garbage bin... suddenly.. more and more of these mystery bundles were getting damaged... and having to be thrown out. I think kids trying to steal them were thinking they were Yugioh or Pokemon cards. Omg hahaha 😂

Knowing WotC, if they find out people are actually falling for this scam, they'll probably try to copy it instead of fighting it.
aren't they already doing that with set boosters? less product than a draft box and a higher price.
@@toof987 The trade off with set boosters is that you have higher chances at rare/mythic cards. So, you get fewer commons, typically more uncommons, and sometimes more rares/mythics. Every set booster box I've opened has been, cost per card, more valuable than a draft booster box.
@@damientalrose553 I experienced this as well. Less chaff, more value. I remember getting a “god box” of khans of tarkir that had, in every pack of the box, accidentally replaced an uncommon with a mythic/rare. I would compare the set boosters to that level of value. Granted, it isn’t a perfect comparison, but you give up 6 packs and a few lower rarity cards and come out with more of the potential value of the rares/mythics than you will with draft boosters
Secret Lair: Very Fair Deal! Comes with a foil Sea Gate Banneret (same art) and one Ikoria pack. But!!!! There's a .001% chance we'll replace it with an original innistrad pack!
@@damientalrose553 it must be noticed though that the perception of higher value is based on the assumption that rares are more valuable ... while the sad reality is that, especially in the last couple of regular sets, most of rares are just bulk that have pretty much the same financial value of uncommons and commons on the secondary market.
You can of course get lucky, but I feel that WotC has designed the set boxes to give customers the illusion of cracking more value (more rares, the debatable "list"), while in reality they are the only ones to increas their profit margins with less product for higher retail price.
Thank you for looking out for us. You are a good soul.

It's predatory marketing. The exact point you brought up is the intended market. New players and parent's who don't know any better. Even so, it's hard to imagine someone would see that, then a booster next to it and not scoff at the $17 price tag. Hopefully skeptical minds prevail.
Problem is card sections at big box stores are consistently messy and prices aren't updated or kept clear. So your grandma sees the shiny card on the front next to a bunch of packs without it, and it's been hung on a hook with the normal packs or tossed on a pile of products and they grab it and dont notice the price, or notice it later on the receipt and try to return it but can't because of the new store policies fighting the recent wave of scalpers.
@@TheKingNaesala I can see that being an issue, too.

That Chaos Orb figurine on your bookshelf is amazing! I recall being so excited to get a Chaos Orb around 6 Months before they banned it. Flipping that card was an art I learned from a pro. You hold the card with your thumb and middle finger and hold it about a foot above the card your want to hit. Use your other hands middle and forefinger to quickly slap down the card straight down. With enough practice the Chaos Orb would flip exactly one time straight down on top of your targeted card or cards if your opponent didn't separate his cards far enough in defense for Chaos Orb. Spacing cards in defense of this is why the card was banned as it took up too much space to run a tourney. But damn was it fun to use while it was still legal. That figuring is sick! Love it!
Where did you get the pictures on the wall in your back? They look amazing! :D
These have been around so long and I don't remember them being so pricey. Back in the day they only used to be like .75 to a dollar more than the booster and had like 3-5 cards. It's wild how the landscape has changed.
Well this is a repack, its not even done by WotC.
@@HelmuthGerka Yep, I get that but the price they want now is just crazy compared to when I was a kid.
'inflation' is what theyll argue
I saw someone in your tweets saying that they found "Throne of Eldraine, Collector boosters" in these and that "so long as you know what you're doing sometimes they are good" and I wanted to scream at them. Absolutely crazy.
" i found a revised pack!"
I'm guilty of this admittedly. Found a commander legends collector booster in one and pulled a mana drain out of it so it worked out. 99.9 percent of these though are absolutely trash.
Oh to go back to the days when a $17 booster was a "scam" and a booster box was $90. Now a booster straight from Wizards is $40 and a box is $400.
I bought one of these recently at a rite aid grocery store in CA. I think it was like 4.99 for a brothers war set booster, and the stone coil serpent. I figured it was a good deal considering the set booster was that same price at my local game store, and I was getting a free stone coil on top of that. Things must have changed in all this time since the release of this video
The passion this man has is almost palpable. Wow, i just recently got into magic snd and found your channel. Amazing content, and i will definitely be watching more.
Same! My husband is an advanced player but I'm a total newbie.
Prof has both entertaining, and highly informative videos. Over the years he's become a pillar of the community, if you haven't already, do yourself a favor and subscribe to his channel.
I miss the random booster packs target carried around 2011. Imagine getting a pack of apocalypse at a big box store today.
I miss the days of the acrylic edh decks… or the 3 pack boosters that sometimes had an older pack like onslaught.
I do remember back when walmart used to have these little boxes of 3-4 random packs that were priced at what the packs actually sold for so it was pretty fair and sometimes you'd get a few older packs. I guess the repacks are all just garbage now.
Thank you for covering this, I literally spent 20 minutes in a Target trying to figure it out for myself and was dumbfounded when I found out what was actually in the package. The only other thing I found was a lot of them had commander legends packs as well.
I absolutely love how passionate Prof is at these videos. It demonstrates how much he loves the players of this game as much as the cards themselves ❤️
I don't even collect MtG, but I absolutely love you and Rudy. Great information for those that do collect it. I still have my deck from 1999, but that was a gift. Fun game though =)
Thanks for the heads up Prof.
When I saw that the pack cover was blocked in the packaging by the crappy "bonus"card I was immediately like "those are packs that are about to rotate aren't they" lol
Wow, I am speechless. Thanks for spreading the word Prof!
Good work thank you Prof I appreciate you looking out for people who don't know. I didn't.
I was into magic about a decade ago, then moved and had no one to play with. Finally picked it up again with the, agreeably bad, MTG Arena, and I remember you from a Game Knights episode where you played Hapatra,Vizier of Poisons. You are great and I'm enjoying the game again
You really want to know what ends up happening, parents end up not wanting to buy them magic products at all after realizing they do those grimy sales tactics wether the new products are a scam or not lol good going Fairfield thanks for the scoop.not surprised they been scamming the pokemon community for YEARS.
This reminds me of Aeon and Tesco (my equivalent of Walmart/Target where I live) selling Gundam model kits at twice the price of what hobby stores are selling them at. It feels like they are preying on families and relatives who don't know better getting them as gifts thinking they found a good deal.
I'm surprised to hear tesco even selling gunpla, never come across it where I am
well it's a decent enough deal at barnes and nobles for gunpla
if i bought it directly from japan, shipping fees makes it equivalent
like 24.99 and then i pay 16 with 7 dollars shipping from japan
@@madhatten00 on average hobby stores are selling high grade kits for 15-20 dollars, but a HG Re:rise kit could cost upwards of 25 to 30 dollars at Aeon/Tesco
I’m over here in Toronto. I don’t see any of these packs in targets.... in fact I don’t see any targets at all. there are Walmart’s though
the 99c store near my house used to sell old magic card packs' i got a few of them and got a mahamoti djinn from them
Man, I do remember those days from about nine or ten years ago when these repacks could have some serious value, but you're right Prof, they've been gone for a long time.
I really appreciate the videos of yours I have seen. I do remember the days of buying a commander in the acrylic box for 10$. Those days are well and truly gone. Keep doing what you are doing sir!
Reminds me of a specific game store in pdx that had singles listed at a unilateral price in a box on the counter. Rather than doing something efficiently like weigh the mf cards and charge for the cards - stand there and go through the entire stack of 327 that I spent 1.5 hours picking through for another 5 mins and start pulling out cards that “ aren’t supposed to be in ther
I’ve been playing magic for about a year and some change and I don’t know what all the lingo is pertaining to sets and booster packs and I’d like to say thank you for being a good person and stoping people like me from being scammed
Added lesson learned included in every pack!
No need to search for a lesson card with THIS product. The learn mechanic is brought by YOU..and your regretted purchase.
man... remember the days when those blisters had 3 packs plus a cheap promo.
Yeah, and I don't think they were even 18 bucks more like 13. That's how I got my Lathliss retail promo card
I have innumerable Genesis Hydra promos from those.
I have never once seen those packs here in Tampa, Fl.
