Another good card to add to this deck would be Ertha jo, frontier mentor. It's a creature that doubles your activated abilities that target either a creature or a player and it allows you to pick new targets for the copy, have two creatures you'd like to make balloons of but can only activate your commander once? Not a problem
Man sadly I’ll be working during that time would love to have had the chance to try and win a commander but best of wishes to everyone else who will be participating in the stream
I have to say that the build your own precon series is one of my favorite. Keep up the good work, Prof and Team!
I agree. I haven't personally wanted any of these commanders for myself, but I HAVE used 3 of these to pass out to people who are new to commander (but play magic). Thrun, ezuri and.. the white blue tokens one. They have yet to flop and always "do the thing" at the very least. Because of that the newer players always get to do something and even if that deck isnt necessarily for them, they see the others too and get inspired. And they're just cheap enough that I'm not worried about something happening to them.
I use a $25 budget pet deck that I built in those games to show that you don't have to spend much to play at that level either.

Oh and if you do this, it's really helpful to put the commander in a clear sleeve, rip an index card in half, summarize the game plan on the card and put it in the back of the sleeve.
Equip auras and enchantments to thrun.
Bonk.
Amass permanents with counters on them.
Assemble a proliferate engine to make your cards stronger.
Fill your hand with ezuris ability.
Prof usually gives a great rundown. Just use that.

I can't believe how great the flavor of the mechanic is on this card. I think they've had some great and clever card designs lately, but this one really takes it to a new level.
Thank you for doing this series! It’s inspired me to make a set of my own pre-con style commander decks! Turns out you can have an awful lot of fun on a $45 budget.

I really love the creepy artwork of the balloon man
for the first time in my life I had to look up and tweet at the artist, I love it so much. Hard to convey horror via 2d artwork but man did it so well!
The balloons remind me of a Junji Ito story (the one about the Hanging Balloons)

It reminds me of "The Ghastly Grinner" from an episode of 'Are You Afraid Of The Dark?' from the early 90's.

Honestly, I'm a little disappointed they didn't go with Nena's 99 Red Balloons. It's so perfect.

This is one of the most useful videos in a long time! There are plenty of people who do deck walkthroughs of how to upgrade precons, this was WAY better by grabbing an oddball and having fun with it + showing the cheap way to make it (~precon cost but better cards) and/or upgrades and what would specifically come out for styles.
Grateful for your walkthroughs of secret lairs so I don’t waste money, for Shuffle Up and Play, and many other things you air on this channel. This is definitely top 3 videos of all time and I hope there is a series(!) of these to come. :)
These videos have just recently inspired me to take a deck building challenge with my roommate to each build a deck with a comparably niche archetype for 20$ or less. I went with Boros vehicles (which is a relatively common color choice for the archetype but vehicles themselves are relatively uncommon) and just finished building it for 18,90€ including even basic lands and the commander (which we before said would not be included in the price). All my cards arrived and I am thrilled to test the deck in our casual rounds soon.
I love it when the Prof wears a white vest. It's a look I don't see often nowadays and it looks super snazzy 💃

btw, you can get Blame game, the Boros precon from Murder in Karlov Manor, and drop it in there. The deck is super synergistic with the balloon man.
I have the deck but don't see the synergies in there. The game has not many good etb effects or attack effects on non-legendary creatures ?

It has some:
There's some crazy ones like solemn or the white titan, It has some token sinergy, some "when it dies" triggers (work on the sacrifice), some "at beggingin of endstep" which you choose the order they go on the stack (the order they trigger), and the 3 (or less) mana value makes it come back multiple times due to some cards in the deck.
I forgot to tell you: You can copy legendary creatures and trigger their ETB and "dies" effects, since the legend rule makes you sacrifice one of the cards after they are on the battlefield (you just wont get to attack with it). This isnt important in this deck since the legendaries dont have synergy with this interaction.
It's not a deck built around it, it's a precon so effects it will copy arent all the best, but it's a cool card and fits the deck. When I said "super synergisctic" I didnt mean this precon was nuts with it of course, it was hyperbole.
@@aradan3913 I feel like a lot of them are genetic stuff : the solemn simulacrum and titan are in loads of precons, for example. But yeah, your explanation makes more sense. Thanks for developing your point !

You can also steal commanders, make a balloon copy, kill it through legend rule and keep the balloon

As of the day I'm writing this, Balloon Man is the legend of the set that had me the most excited, but I wasn't sure where to start with his deck since it's so unique among boros so this is a massive help! Thanks Prof!
I adore this series. It's amazing for new and old players alike and theve all been really fun to tinker and upgrade. The balloon man is one of my favorite commanders in recent years and I cannot wait to build him.
I’ve loved this series! I built my own Mr House and your Killy Jilly video has definitely inspired me. He is easily the most interesting legendary in Duskmourne and has such fun potential! Keep up the great work!

You should absolutely have her in this deck. She's Boros, she makes a Mercenary any time she ETBs, but most of all, she doubles not just Balloon man's ability, but all your activated abilities that target creatures.
I absolutely loved this card when I first saw it and immediately thought how cool this would have been as one of the precons. Thanks for the deck prof!

I love this series, I’ve built the Tom bombadil and the black blue green dinosaur one and they function so nicely, and work excellently as jumping off points to make it your own
the creepy balloon man reminds me of that one Junji Ito story The Hanging Balloons. Love the horror references throughout !!!

I'm no editor and whomever edited this did a great job, but man at 8:11 that balloon should have had a poorly edited talking head of Prof as he explains that transition. It wouldn't have been creepy at /face value/ but the idea is creepy enough if it clicked wit the viewer :)

And i just finished my Hofri Ghostforge deck...
Certainly gonna add him as a "second in command" in 99.
But i don't feel like he is as good. The two mana difference is great for him, but the necessary untap theme feels more of a "fix" for his problems that Hofris spirit theme, which multiplies the value gained.
He can copy something more times, which is great for high value cards, but copying everything once bring much more value with smaller creatures.
But there are some great infinite combos with him and the copying is more controlled. Gotta try both
This is one of the cooler legends from Duskmourn in my opinion. I like that it can be built for value or straight combo. And it’s probably got one of the creepier artworks in the set. I’m here for it.
The sheer thought of taking a dog's corpse and turning it into a balloon is creepy as hell, but so on flavor for this guy.
With all this blowing and gooning, I don't know what to do with myself 😂

I love your BYO Precon series, and have built all of the decks you've done thus far. While building this deck, I noticed that your Archidekt decklist is missing Molten Gatekeeper. I think it was accidentally replaced by Ghostfire Slice (doesn't seem to fit the theme, and wasn't mentioned in your video). Anyway, just waanted to let you know. Love the series, keep it up!
I started making a Zinnia deck a couple days ago and its funny how much of this translates. Might just have to get the Balloon Man in the 99 for some sweet extra value, thanks for the recommends

I so, so love this card. It works perfectly in the 99 of Zinnia as shown by the amount of overlap in the cards here. But I'm sure if you decide to let it helm a deck it won't just be clowning around, and will instead inflate your winrate! nice deck tech as always Prof!
A great video definitely raising the bar on ways Boros decks can be. I am surprised that Jaxis was not included for the deck as a sort of back up to our jolly clown or addition to him
I just talked to a friend today that I am going to build a deck around the jolly baloon man so this video popped up (*badum tss*) at the right time.
Here are a few of my additions to the deck:
- Trusty Packbeast and Loran, Disciple of History to recur artifacts (meteor golem, boom box, burnished hart)
- Burnished Hart: repeatable fetching of two lands
- Urbis Protector: creates 4/4 angels tokens when copied
- Skaa Embermage: deals 4 damages to any target when copied
- Bloodpyre Elemental: deals 4 damages to a creature when the copy dies
- Arcbound Shikari: boost other artifacts and modular, so puts its +1/+1 when the copy dies
- Thraben Inspector, Wojek Investigator: clue creation for card advantage
- Sanguine Evalgelist: creates 1/1 bat when copied and when it dies
- Unlicensed Hearse: Graveyard control and can grow big. Can be recursed by packbeast or Loran.
- Ertha Jo, Frontier Mentor: double the copy effect of the clown, creates 1/1
- Tragic Arrogane: flexible sweeper

I had already planned to make this deck. This is giving me some great extra ideas
This deck is incredibly similar to my Saheeli, the Suns Brilliance deck I built when I cracked her from an Ixalan draft, except she's Izzet instead of Boros. Intruder Alarm and all the blue untap dorks make for very powerful combo finishers in that deck.
Do be careful with Echoing Assault (11:00) as it does say "nontoken" only. Can't copy the balloons, but you can absolutely copy the original if you send him into the red as well!
Nahiri's Resolve could be a good include in an ETB focused version of this deck. It's like a Conjuror's Closet for your whole board, you just can't block with whatever you choose to flicker
Boros continues to be the coolest color combination by miles. Simic lovers everywhere in shambles.

Humble Defector would be insane in this deck since they gain control of it after you draw cards with the copy

Balloon man also makes a surprisingly fun modular creature commander especially since he’s in boros. You can run him as an alternative to zabaz for a different kind of deck

I am a fan of openings and the excitement that it brings those who spend countless amount of dollars to achieve either “their” goals or those to “Sell” said fortunes. While O will never play, own or probably have a fondness as those of the community I do quite enjoy those who open and achieve greatness when they do. It makes me smile and it allows me to think that despite cost and debt, people can achieve a level that satisfies them. Tbh it’s the same obsession for any card with sports being predominantly in the fore front. To make a long post short I just want to ask if you will ever become a TRUE MAGIC WIZARD and grow your hair super long and beard the same. I know SUPER BORING and the lead up was like if LOTR Tales of middle earth collectors WOULDN’t be $1000 a box. Personally I want to see the beard and the hair. You got close to trying before this whatever inflated value post. WE WANT THE BEARD!!! #makeitameme
I’d love a less budget version of this. Things like Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation, Anointed Procession, and the token generator staples could make this deck insane

the price on Card Kingdom shot up 20$ by the time I got there. my business recommendation would be to provide a link to the decklist on card kingdom as like a saved list. I had to do a few hoops to get to a cart with these cards in it :) I still got there though. great video and great explanation.

I have bought and and will build this deck (excluding jolly balloon man as its not out yet) i spent around £38 which is like $40 off of card trader

good pick for a self made precon general, defiantly a great midrange deck that will get lots of value, be fun to play, my only note is that for about the same price Inferno titan is signifgantly better then triskilion

Another way to maximise the balloon mans ability is to target an Agrus Kos, Eternal Soldier!

My favorite series outside of shuffle up and play
Proxied a Hedge Shredder and built an EDH deck around it and Hedron Crab with Grolnok, the Omnivore as the commander. It ramps so quickly with a few tutors and has been consistent.
Hedge trimmer being able to put things like surveil and fetch lands onto the battlefield, albeit tapped, just hits major ramp as soon as turn three.
Duskmourn has also added a lot of power to Standard. I'm so excited that Standard is fun again!
Echoing assault specifically copies nontoken creatures, so you have to attack with the creatures you want to copy.
Sad that tyrant of discord didnt make the cut but its understandable since he is often just a worse meteor golem thats somewhat hard to resolve.
