@@joeylras You shouldve dug into the Command Zone's catalogue of content. Theyve done a couple videos on general building tips including general suggestions for card proportions (ie. ~8 sources of artifact ramp, ~5-6 removal, etc...). Those numbers are usually a good place to start and can be tweaked once you're more comfortable with building decks depending on what the goal of the deck is, the way you pilot the deck and who your commander is (not to suggest you're not comfortable with building decks now, just more of a general point for other noobs who may come across this comment).

Playing Slivers a ton in HS and College. Left Magic for 12ish years and the first Commander deck I built (well building still) is Slivers. Luckily I was able to trade for the big Slivers (Queen, Legion, etc.) =)
I'm starting to build my first commander deck and this video is the perfect launching point! Ive already realised i have way to much ramp planned sitting at around 20 right now so gotta thin that out!
I was JUST looking for something like this yesterday. This turned out to be exactly what I needed: a breakdown of how much land/ramp/removal/etc. I should have, along with how to use (the somewhat daunting) EDHREC.

Professor, your take on commander building 101 was an inspirational tutorial that I have already shared with my pop for the new members. What a fantastic first introductory lesson for new Magic players! Thanks Professor
Thank you so much for posting this video Professor. I have often struggled to build a Commander deck in the past & this was very insightful & helpful to me. Keep up the good work during these difficult times.
I've been playing Commander on and off for years now but I still watched the video because Prof has insight I may have not had. Thanks for all your hard work.
Thank you for a great video. Your videos are entertaining, informative and you are an awesome presenter. I bought my first Magic cards recently. I like winter, snow and all that goes with them. I bought two Kaldheim draft booster packs and soon after bought a draft booster box. I have a lot of cards now. I asked the store owner what was most commonly played and he told me Commander. So, I'm putting together my first deck. Finding this video and watching it, a number of times, has been very valuable. I am not clear though on whether I need 100 cards or 101 cards (including the commander) as the rule appears unclear. Thanks for your time!
Great video. As a former teacher, I can tell you I enjoy the way you disseminate information. What I learned here will be very helpful in crushing my friends who play like pros. THANK YOU!
I just woke up today watching your video about EDH 3 colour mana base and some other videos to build my first commander deck (sidisi, Brood tyrant) and right when i sit down to start i saw your upload. Great timing!
@TCC Would love some videos to update old players on what's new in MTG. I haven't played/bought/traded since Stronghold which is a long time. Now I'm trying to get back into MTG and would love a few videos on ... Past noteworthy sets, MTG culture and recent history, new abilities and formats, etc...
I just got into Magic about a month ago and am already looking at building my own deck. I have a prebuilt one I bought and have played against a few people with various decks. With the information from this video I feel like I was handed the holy grail of deck building tools!
I'm glad you brought up that ramp does not go towards your land count. I'm a budget EDH fanatic myself and have built over 20 EDH decks. When other people show me their decklist asking for advice, I'm often shocked at their low land count. It really is a common misconception that signets and elves count towards land count. This is made even worse by the fact that new players tend to put a overly high Mana curve into their EDH decks. Great video prof!
This was very helpful. I feel very out of place trying to learn about Magic and building a commander deck to enjoy with friends for the first time. This video gave me a great starting point to tackling my first step in deck building for Magic.
Super helpful. I took up magic in the middle of this dumb pandemic. Your videos have helped to fill the void of a good playgroup to learn from. Thank you.

This video is top notch. I will be giving it to new players as a starting point. I believe that you have upped the base knowledge of the entire commander format.
Just bought my first commander deck yesterday, the White and Blue First Flight. Had my first ever MTG match with it. Really enjoyed the deck and I’m excited to eventually build my own, but should probably get more experience playing first. 😅

I have a friend I'm getting into Magic as a whole and I've been sending him vids from you all the time, now I have a great one for EDH! I don't fuuuully love some of your numbers (personally 38 lands for me is the higher end and I tend to look at 35-36 as the average baseline) but overall this is a great video that's going to be extremely helpful! Thanks again for all your hard work.
My first commander deck was Zahid, Djinn of the Lamp. I also had Orah, Skyclave Hierophant and Torgaar, Famine Incarnate decks as well and still do. Now, I’m wanting to build a Tymaret, the Murder King deck and this video has helped me out a lot! I’m going to go to EDHREC and see which cards people are using in their Tymaret decks and decide which ones I want to use in mine. Thanks, prof!
I haven't started my own yet but this video removed a lot of the brain fog for me. It's an intimidating thing to take that first step away from precons. Thank you Prof

Sweet, my friends are getting into commander and I can send them this to get them going!
I was JUST looking for something like this yesterday.
This turned out to be exactly what I needed: a breakdown of how much land/ramp/removal/etc. I should have, along with how to use (the somewhat daunting) EDHREC.
has made 20 decks still watches
I'm an enfranchised player, I've been playing commander for nearly a decade now. Even so, I always enjoy your videos aimed at new players. This was a fantastic lesson, Professor! A+!
Step one: Watch this video
Step two: write that down
Step three: make her open the box
Step two: During FNM, discover that your deck is full of nonbo's because you didn't read the cards correctly.
Step 5: learn to count G33KST4R
this couldn’t have come at a better time, i’ve been playing precons with my partner and while she enjoys them she wants to self express and build something she can be proud of, many thanks Prof!
It just showed up on my screen and I pressed it 1st view
Well here's a delightful coincidence. Just this morning I was going through your Commander playlist from the beginning, it'll be fun to see how information changed from then compared to now!
Are we gonna discuss how the prof looks like hes homeless but rich at the same time?😂😂😂
Thank you! I have been wanting to build a Simic creature deck that involves Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle, Kruphix, Zegana, and Tatyova but having issues using Edhrec... NOW I see how to use it properly!
EXTREME THICKNESS
Holy crap. When you finished explaining EDHREC, I literally couldn't stop myself from exclaiming Hallelujah!!!! 🙌 (new to mtg) your channel is an invaluable resource. Much obliged.
This better not tell me to have friends to play with again.
Professor, your take on commander building 101 was an inspirational tutorial that I have already shared with my pop for the new members. What a fantastic first introductory lesson for new Magic players!
Thanks Professor
"~38 lands and ~30 synergy cards"
*Me playing my Jhoira deck with 30 lands and 64 artifacts*
I've built a couple decks, but not only did I learn a lot here, I found a new card to add to one of them! Good work Professor!
Thank you.
As a returning player from 2003 that fell in love with the EDH format and brought me back to the hobby, this is a wonderful video. Thank you very much for this video! ❤
I have, now, 15 complete (and 5 in-progress) Commander decks. But dangit if Prof still didn't teach me new things here. Thanks, as always!
This video is top notch. I will be giving it to new players as a starting point. I believe that you have upped the base knowledge of the entire commander format.
Brand new to magic and was so glad when someone pointed me to this channel! Thanks for the advice
Just bought my first commander deck yesterday, the White and Blue First Flight. Had my first ever MTG match with it. Really enjoyed the deck and I’m excited to eventually build my own, but should probably get more experience playing first. 😅
God knows how much time i've spent brainstorming about my next commander deck (first one was a precon), but thanks to you, Professor, it's pretty much all more clearer now. Thank you so much!
Working on optimizing my Scarab God deck and this notification comes up! Thanks Prof :)
Holy crap did I need this video today! Just got all my new Ikoria Commander products, this guide will be super helpful as I build my own as well!! Thanks as always Professor!!
Recently started playing in a cardshop with a friend and picked up a precon that i liked, It was such a fun way to learn the game.
Thanks for making this video
In 2014 I net decked a mono green "omnath, locus of mana" deck
6 years later and I'm still playing that exact build, still tier 1 and still fun as all hell.
These are the best videos you do. When you are in teacher mode, it helps the pieces click into place.
been rewatching this video so many times just to take notes lol. I'm new to the game and like playing it often. i got three decks that were already made and are great. but my buddy has an elf deck that i fell in love with and want to give it a shot to build one on my own. This video is so helpful.
Hooray, I’ve got so many magic cards coming in the mail, I’m new to magic in general, have played plenty, this video couldn’t have come at a better time.
What an excellent video! Going past just the guidelines of numbers of cards in each category, but showing how to effectively use edhrec to do so! The sample purphoros deck just puts it over the top!
Just built my first commander deck and couldn't have done it without this video! (Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma)
Thanks, prof!
i have built tons of decks but this video was still super helpful for learning how to navigate edh rec better, ty for the amazing content prof !!!
I haven't started my own yet but this video removed a lot of the brain fog for me. It's an intimidating thing to take that first step away from precons. Thank you Prof
Thank you for existing, Professor
Perfect, professor! I already was an user of edhrec, but without a lot of tools you have show in your video. Thanks a lot!
I've been really looking to get into Commander and building my first deck so I'm glad you made this video!! Gonna start building a King Kenrith deck for my first one.
I've been using EDHREC for a while and STILL learned quite a lot! Big thumbs up, sharing this in my playgroup!
As a player that is just to build my very first commander deck I find this video extremely useful. Thank you very much!
