I have recently discovered your channel and I am learning so much from your excellent videos.My garden is 20 years old but my pond is only one year old, so I am definitely a beginner in this department. I have to say though, as much as I wanted to pay attention to what you are teaching in this video, I kept getting so wonderfully distracted by your absolutely adorable dog! The part where he keeps touching you with his paw (asking for more fish food?!) is priceless. Thank you for the great videos! Please continue to teach us about this fascinating subject!

Hi Ed, Somehow l had managed to miss this video till a day or so when l saw the pond revisited. as you opened with Happy new year thats probably why i was back in hospital over Christmas/new year period but sound again now. l am among the many hundreds who cant wait to see your pond finally finished, but it is looking good.

I have used an air pump for a number of years to keep my pond from freezing over completely. Works great and removes any worry about gas build up.

Another great video with great advice. My raised pond doesn’t have a mechanical filtration system it has a 250l wheelie bin bog filter that works exceptionally well, only problem is the water flow has to be a lot slower than mechanical filtration. This resulted in the return pipes to the pond freezing when we had a night at -8c, the pump continued to run causing the bog filter to overflow and dump the excess pond water over the sides. Luckily I noticed the pond sounded different when I walked past it early in the morning and switched the pump off, lost around 10 inches of water but there’s still a good three feet left so fish are ok. Lessons learned for me is that bog filters do have their downside when the weather gets colder and it’s a lot harder to insulate them. 👍
Thanks for watching and your kind words! Good job you noticed your filter had frozen when you did- that could have been disastrous! Not too much of a problem for me in the south of the Uk but I have advised caution to clients in the past during extreme cold if they’re running slow flowing streams with falls, which can freeze and create dams of ice that raise and back up water levels creating a similar problem.

Hi Ed In the past when winters have been much colder and the ice has been thick I found emptying a couple of inches of water from under the ice helps, I do this by opening the drain valve on my filter and watching the level drop through the hole made by water entering from the filter return. all the best mate.

Hello Ed, nice to watch a new video.from.you. Especially in context to this seasom, in winter . Nice, cute dog you have btw 😊. Nevertheless back.to winter topic and pond, better said fish care maintenance, the temp here in my country Switzerland is mild since 2 weeks, and water temp.on the surface is around 10 degrees. I gave 1g winterfood coated with Vitamins, Spirulina in combination with Propolis Solids. Filter and pump remain active, pump remains always 10cm below surface of water. Just my experience, the thing is next this 'spring' shortcuit break will last few days , which will fall back to normal air temp in winter between 0 and 5 degrees. Hope it will not get a big water temp change which will harm my fish. 😢

Good to see you ED. I hope you and the family had a good Christmas and new years. It's cool here in Indiana , we have had a couple of days so far this month with temperatures dipping down below 0 Fahrenheit. And we have about 4 inches of snow . Some really good information for the pond owners about freezing temps and their live stock. Looking forward to spring I have quite a bit of pre paid roses and flowers to plant as soon as spring comes. Take care and hope we see you soon. Cheers !

Hi Ed, I’ve been learning from your videos. Really impressive stuff. I want to tackle my own natural spring fed pond this year. I haven’t found a video of yours on how to deal with such a pond. I assume I should use blue clay instead of a liner. And maybe a geotextile over the majority of the clay base so as to separate the water from the clay? Is there any guidance or reading you could direct me to please? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
