Thanks for your kind words! In all approx 9 tons of rock were used for this project-all manoeuvred and dealt with by hand. Not to mention the 70 odd tons of soil hand dug and burrowed during the excavation!!!

Do you have to clean all the stone before you lay it? When I have seen stone before it’s normally very dusty/dirty. I wonder if it could be jet washed after install rather than clean each bit before laying it! 😅 would love to see a how to build video one day ;)
Thanks! Many people would balk at doing such jobs manually but I enjoy it- its less intrusion to a garden and so requires less cleaning up after and the slower progress gives me plenty of time to eye up what I’m doing and come to grips with a project! As for the building process- as the rock laying is pretty much done is a random way I build up as I go, rather then laying courses- otherwise it can begin to look a little too uniform for my liking.
...and yes- every stone has to be well washed first (I use a jet wash) to ensure a good strong bond between the rock and the mortar. Again on this particular job pretty much every stone visible was hand washed and hand cut/cropped. All time consuming stuff I’m afraid! You might get away with not cleaning prior to use if the stone was particularly clean, but spending time washing the stone before use gives me time to get a really good look with what I’m working with and allows me to sort out different piles based on rock thickness, its character, colour etc. I often have a ‘waterfall’ pile, a ‘pond build’ pile, ‘a feature stone’ pile for example. Plus I’m always on the hunt for some decent fossils- which sadly I rarely find!!

It was rather a lot of digging and stonework!! But, take every day as it comes and eventually I get to the end of a job!
