Hey old man, LOL. Now you're talking my language with impellers. I worked with industrial impellers for 40 years. The science behind the areo of the impeller has made a few leaps and bounds in the last 10 years in air and hydraulic use in design. The cavitation/ surge capacity has been raised >25% in the last few years so this enables more impeller wear and still deliver volume of design for much longer. I hope you're having a good pond season so far this year, The pond looks very nice and clear. Great work.

Hi Ed I well remember this pond from your last re design work on it , still looking good especially after a major clean up. One thing that intrigues me on this job is the size of the squares on the pond net they look to be about four or five inch squares the net on my pond are about one inch mesh, but as the Heron is a constant visitor l have no intention of changing mine, lncidentally Malcolm Hockman [Plantsmans Corner] gave you a name check on his latest video

Personally I wouldn’t bother netting this pond at all, however using the larger grid netting like this is a little less visible and also allows the plants to grow though unhindered, which was the main consideration when installing this larger holed net!

Hi Ed, I've subscribed to your channel having recently really started to appreciate & understand my lifelong fascination with ponds, rivers, fish etc (I'm now 48). I'm hoping to enhance my knowledge & skills. I am
mainly looking back over your films from 2020/21 atm, and have 2 questions:
1. Is there any reason why you appear to prefer mechanical filtration over bog filters?
2. I've not come across any build / rebuild you've shown that includes a skimmer, despite many ponds being vulnerable falling leaves, etc. Again, is there any reason for that?

Thanks for watching and commenting- I’ll have to do a video on why I don’t include wetland filters in my designs one day- its prob my most commonly asked question!! The simple and honest answer is because I need to incorporate simple reliable filtration methods that I can guarantee will maintain clean and clear water immediately, wont require a settling in or maturing period and are simple for myself, or clients to maintain on a regular basis. Wetland filtration is a fantastic concept and has been used for many many years in ponds reliably, however its impossible for me to guarantee clear water to a client with the use of such methods, and many people are not keen to wait for a system to mature before their ponds are clear. Maintenance on such natural systems- although less frequent then using more modern equipment- can be a much more intensive job, often involving fully draining and clearing sediment that has accumulated. Something that many people just aren’t prepared or capable of doing themselves. I’d love one day to implement a wetland filter into my designs however!
As for surface skimmers- they have they’re place in a pond-particular in a koi pond and I have included them occasionally into some of my builds, but in general almost every pond I maintain over the years that has included a skimmer has some form of issue on a regular basis! Usually the skimmer basket blocking too regularly (which shows they are effective!!), floating skimmers blocking and floating to the surface etc etc… they have their place and I’ll always allow scope for additional installations should surface filtration be required in the future, but to me is not a necessity in general.

@CrystalClearAquatics I really appreciate your thorough & comprehensive reply Ed, thanks; what you say makes total sense & I guess reflects the desire for practicality over idealism I guess, which clearly is of significance to your clients, and you've git to give them what they want right?
I guess it boils down to bogs and skimmers being a labour of love for enthusiasts compared to convenience for others, albeit probably at a financial cost in terms purchase of expensive filtration equipment! (And most of your clients don't look short of a bob or two!!) 😅

I’ve worked in the trade now for a long time (almost 30 years!) and over this time frame have developed a trend to using equipment from companies who make good quality gear and perhaps more importantly have good after sales care and the technical support to back up any issues or queries I have. Oase tick this box for me and for all of my installations I almost always use exclusively Oase kit- its not the cheapest and although I could increase my profit margin significantly for pond builds and equipment installations by using other cheaper manufacturers kit I chose not to- preferring the peace of mind that something I install wont give me a headache in the future! I’m not affiliated with Oase (although I get on well with many of the staff in their organisation!) and neither do I get paid by them for advertising their kit. In this instance however Oase did very kindly help me with the supply of this pump!

Any chance of doing a video of the correct way to set up and install pond piping, pumps, filters, hostails & correct way to install?? For idiots like me! lol 😝
When storing water to put back into the pond, how long can you hold it before putting it back in? Do you use aerators in the water or just leave it in the holding tanks? I assumed it would go "bad" and not good to re-populate the pond. If you have a chance could you address this?
Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting and for asking such a good question! You’re right- water removed from the pond and stored in static tanks will quickly deteriorate and change from the state it was originally in in the pond, particularly so if livestock are removed and stored separately. That said the water wont ‘go bad’ as such and will still be more preferable to use then filling the pond directly with tap water. Adding aeration or some sort of water movement to storage tanks if the water is to be held for a great length of time (more then a few weeks) would be beneficial.

Can you control the flow rate independently please on the two inlets?
Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting! You have control over how much/little water is drawn through each inlet; you can slide the secondary inlet into four positions; ie 1st position and with secondary inlet blanked off 100 % water is drawn into the pump via the primary inlet/pump cage. Blanking cap removed from secondary inlet and moved to position 2 allows some water to be drawn into the secondary inlet, but the bulk of water still through the primary inlet. Position 3 is 50/50 and so on. This isn’t effecting output of the pump-(and if you wish to have control over the flow rates/turn over you’ll need to fit valves or utilise the Smart Control functions with additional kit) but simply controlling where water is drawn into the pump from.

Big fish! You need Aquascape designed wetland filter. Its an ecosystem. Not mechanical.

Although I’m a fan of the wetland or bog filter and I certainly feel they have their uses in filtering ponds- particularly large ones- such systems have been around for many many years- its not a new concept. They have their advantages and disadvantages and from an installers prospective, working with clients who may have limited space and/or time to do any sort of maintenance on their system a modern filtration system comprising a pump, filter and uvc steriliser can be a more predictable and reliable way to filter a pond and achieve a clear and healthy pond very rapidly.

What is the reason for the whirlybird at the edge of pond?
Ha! Well spotted! This spinning cowl would have been used once upon a time for ventilation of sorts but has been positioned besides the pond by the owner as a heron deterrent. Not sure if it will have the desired effect or not but it looks quite attractive in its own right!

How much are these pumps to buy
Hi Paul, depends on the size pump you’re after and where abouts you are based in the world- but here in the Uk the pumps range in price from approx £300 for the 5000 lph model up to approx £725 for a 21000 lph pump.

Certainly would not want you handling my fish , the way you stressed them out was shocking
Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting- although it can be distressing to see fish-especially large fish- floundering around in shallow water, catching large numbers of fish this way is fast and so ultimately reduces stress on the fish. If I was catching only one or to large koi in a pond I would net them out using a soft net and koi sock, but when draining and cleaning a pond like this much better in my experience to catch the ponds inhabitants rabidly in this way. No fish were hurt in this process and all went back into their pond without issue. I have visited the pond twice since this video and all fish are happy and healthy!

Thanks for watching and commenting and good shout-the Aquael range of pumps is very competitive! However I doubt we’re comparing like for like on a fair basis and without knowing all the stats of the Aquajet pump, such as lift and comparing both pumps performances at different head heights it’s impossible to compare accurately. This is where rotor design is key-and where Oase have spent a lot of money researching- although both pumps may deliver comparable flow rates at zero head height (water level) I’d be interested to make comparisons at differing head heights and hose lengths. I would be pretty confident the Oase pump has a much better performance curve then the cheaper model, not to mention additional features such as the smart link, SFC control, second outlet etc. Thanks for highlighting this though!

@@CrystalClearAquatics I watch all your videos from the beginning. I love your way of recording and your approach to the subject, as well as your love for nature. I don't know if your comparison will be objective since you cooperate with Oase, but I'd be happy to watch such a film. I have had Aquael pumps in two ponds for many years, but maybe you will convince me to change to Oase :) Sorry for my English. I'm better at talking and listening than writing. 😄
