  • Immersion & realism are often a hot topic surrounding Call of Duty but even more so with Infinity Ward titles since they're known for taking a more grounded approach. Today I wanted to share one of my big hopes when it comes to immersion in Modern Warfare II. What are your thoughts on immersion & realism when it comes to gameplay and non-gameplay elements?

What’s real awesome about the idea about an “immersion” setting is that another game does this. Halo the master chief collection allows players to turn off gun skins, wacky armors, and other cosmetics to keep the feel of the older halo games that are on there. I would love for MW2 to go down this route as you please both crowds.

If anything, the inclusion of that button affected Bungie's bottom line. There is absolutely no way that Activision, who makes literally made billions off of cosmetics in just a few months of MW19 alone, is going to let you turn off the skins. Are you all seriously thinking that Activision is going to remove one of the biggest pulls to their sales? You know how many people have went "what is X that they have? I want it" because of seeing it in game? A lot.

This is how I felt the "realism" argument should be seen as when talking about cod. I don't think anybody is asking for ARMA or Tarkov mil-sim gameplay, just something that looks tacticool and grounded in reality while still being an arcade shooter. Nobody in the real world has an experimental Russian bullpup that's bright pink with a cartoon babe on it, but it's absolutely something that some weirdo would probably do if that was widely available to own. And I still love the odd fun bundle like the anime skins, that's fun and just shows they can still do it without overdoing it, but Vanguard (Cold War too but not so much) treated their store like it was Fortnite and their was just no immersion. They could have made some super interesting, gritty World War 2 themed bundles.

I want Call of Duty to be like the movie The Hurt Locker. I’ve been told by my friends who have served in the military that The Hurt Locker isn’t a realistic film-EOD teams don’t operate like that, they wouldn’t be in the positions they were, they wouldn’t do some of the things they did, they wouldn’t be in situations where they’re alone, etc.-but when I, a non-military layman, watches the movie, I’m so immersed in the film that it “feels” real to me. I’m so immersed in the experience that the fact that it’s not realistic ends up being inconsequential because I’m sold on what I’m seeing. COD doesn’t have to be Tarkov or Arma or whatever super realistic game is out there, but when I’m playing, I want to not notice the unrealistic stuff because it’s realistic looking and feeling enough that I’m sold on it. Little things like someone doing tactical reloads with hundred round magazines won’t bother me so much (ever hold 100-200 rounds in one hand before? They’re heavy) if the rest of the game feels and looks realistic enough. Stuff like lightning bullets and anime camos and glowing operators take me out of the game in a bad way and add unrealistic features that are conspicuous. But things like weapon balancing causing guns that should be more powerful or have less recoil be changed because they need to fit into the game without being OP are cases of good unrealistic features (when done right, anyway). In short, I want to be sold on the realism even if it isn’t that realistic.

There is also gloves, boots, backpacks, shades, tops, pants, webbing/plate carriers and that’s just the gear without face, hair, beard, tattoos etc…

MW19 had some of the best cosmetics in any FPS game. So many of the skins were inspired by real pictures of operators, and it was awesome seeing all the hype online when people would find who the skins were based on like the Safeguard skin for Otter which was based on the off duty British SAS operator in Nairobi who stormed the hotel by himself taking out several insurgents and rescuing several hostages. Them bringing in Milsim skins for the default operator was one of the best decisions they made, and the Milsim skins are by far the most widely used skins to this day in MW. Even when they added all the horror movie themed skins, you rarely saw them because everyone wanted to run milsim skins. I think that shows just how popular the milsim skins and operators were.

Halo MCC did it when they started adding new armour sets that weren't in the original versions of the game, but the problem is that those weren't paid like CODs' and Activision definitely wants people to keep seeing these skins to get other players to buy them as well. You can have as many wacky skins as you want. Just make it look like someone could have plausibly made that outfit. The Attack on Titan skins in Vanguard just aren't it, but the Velikan Leatherface skin or the Mara Cat Ears skin look like plausible cosplay. That's where I feel the line should be drawn.

for me id say tied to the setting of the game, i'm fine with having a bit more wacky skins in a futuristic setting than a modern or past setting for example. i don't mind somewhat unrealistic skin as long as they are grounded in reality, an example being the anime Mara skin, where she is wearing just a normal helmet, with cat ears stuck on, and normal leggins with anime print on them. i prefer this approach to putting actual fictional characters in

If anything, it’d be cool if they included “tactical” or “immersive” variants of these whackier characters as a compromise and integrate it with a realism filter in that way. Even though it’d be great to have a feature to disable skins you don’t want to see, Activision (and maybe even IW) would never consider implementing it since the value of buying cosmetics in any multiplayer game comes from other people being able to see them, so it’d just be a bad business move remove that guarantee.

Thank you! I have definitely relaxed my view over the years, but very well said, I hope they listen. Even though I have no practical objection to the goofy operators in the regular playlists, I still find them…just off-putting, and I begin to lose interest in the overall visual design of anything in the game simply because I don’t take any of it seriously. My focus becomes solely on map layout and function.
Your realism suggestion, however, was spot-on. I actually would play the mode now and again if that was the case.
Lastly, I would LOVE to see them introduce a couple similar things into the competitive playlist:
    1) Block use of all operator skins except for a default esports skin (think BOCW), or maybe even four varieties per team for each player to select at the beginning of the game (player 1, 2, so on) for purposes of identification.
    2. Off-topic: bans for rage quitting and dash boarding. Nothing extreme, but the 5 minute, 10 minute, 30 minute, hour, day limits of BO3 were great. Maybe allow 3 quits before they begin to hopefully avoid false positives.
Good stuff as always, man. Thanks for being a level and creative mind in the community.

  • @inkscript483

I draw the line pretty conservatively, at skins for characters that for the most part represent real gear from whatever military, etc., the character may represent. Call of Duty started out with immersion as a top priority, and it should stay that way. However, I think being able to customize small things within the overall outfit is fine. I just want to avoid the BO3 situation where after every fucking match I have to see absolute clown characters giving cringe post-match lines and poses. The post-match should convey only play-of-the-game and post-match information with some immersive music.
Ultimately, Gameplay > Realism, but it's possible to have a lot of realism without intruding on gameplay. Elephant Feet footsteps in MW2019 is a case where realism directly harmed gameplay. IW trying to strip the minimap entirely was another attempted move that would have damaged the gameplay. A place where realism belongs is the guns themselves. CoD needs to stop doing left-handed gun models, flat-stop, across the board. It's murder on immersion when you know that firing a left-handed gun (that doesn't actually exist in most cases) right-handed is how you get hot brass in your face and down your bra, and all because somebody thinks that we're creaming for bolt animations.

Yeah, I see where you come from. However, I do think that having a very flashy skin affects gameplay. It jarring and distracts heavy. Especially when people are sliding around at 50mph ya know? When you have a bright crazy skin come rushing your screen, but a natural skin behind them, it's hard for "re-attuning" to the default. And, on a more personal note, I have moderate color blindness. So with skins like the Armoured Titan one in Vanguard. It's either that it's jarring, or it blends in on maps like desert siege and the other map in the desert. Then there is the ambiance of the game, but that's less important by a long shot lol.

They need to make gun blueprints the same way Valorant does for the sake of competitive integrity. Take the "Steamer" blueprint for the Automaton in vanguard for example. When someone shoots at you with that thing, not only does it sound suppressed NO MATTER WHAT MUZZLE ATTACHMENT THE PERSON HAS ON IT (complete bullshit imo); but also, you can't see a damn thing because of the red tracers that the gun has on it. Valorant makes it so that from a third person POV, other people's guns, no matter the skin, bullet tracers and gun sounds are the same as if there was no skin on the gun. So there's no "pay to win" aspect because only the person holding the gun can see the different bullet tracer effect and hear the different sound effect the gun has when firing. Makes the game so much more fair. Especially in ranked play. Just my 2 cents.

    • @zaucy_
      @zaucy_ 2 года назад

@k_aon1 well yeah but when getting shot directly by it, it causes the effect to happen on your screen compared to me shooting back without tracers, not causing the same effect. Causing an unfair situation. It's just my thoughts on how they should go about things in the future. And that way, the pros can also use them in their matches because it won't be creating any unfair advantages when using those weapon skins and therefore, showing off different bundles and advertising them to viewers which would increase sales. Especially when people see their favorite players using certain skins, they're gonna want to buy and use the same ones just like the players they look up to

I've never cared for grounded skins in COD for custom cosmetics, the crazy ones have so much more flair and personality. And I like that certain skins give you an idea of what kind of player you're up against, there's always "that" skin that you see and instantly know "okay, this person is gonna be super sweaty". If you're not gonna have fancy skins then why have paid customization at all? Why would I want to pay real money to make my character look like military professional #2 instead of military professional #1? If I'm gonna pay real money for some pixels, I better be getting some wild shit
