My group of friends and I performed this in our high school talent show. I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed the day of our “show” and was pretty heavily medicated. Our singer was super nervous and started drinking straight honey right before we went on because someone told him mixing some in water would help sooth his throat. He got about 3 notes out before he realized he couldn’t sing at all because of all of the honey so he walked off stage in anger. The rest of us never missed a beat and I stepped up and sang this and Ariels by SOAD with a mouth full of gauze. I had never played guitar and sang before simultaneously but somehow made it happen due to the adrenaline. I don’t really remember it but thankfully have a video of it and we actually sounded decent given all of the circumstances... This song will always hold a special place in my heart because of that. Takes me back to that one single day when I was a “rock star” 🤘

As others mentioned, Taproot was never a band that really broke through but this song did gain some traction before they went back to obscure. They really changed their sound from albums like Gift and their ep Thiftwhore to this album and beyond. They have another great song on their later albums on Our Long Road Home - Wherever I Stand.
Aside from that the whole Gift album is pretty great. Dragged Down, Emotional Times and Again and Again are bangers

    • @geckosethpe
      @geckosethpe 11 месяцев назад +1

Agreed; Taproot had very decent commercial success with this particular song. It would make regular rotations on Radio (yes, people listened to the radio for new music) and their tour did sell a bunch of tickets to for some big name bands (at the time).
It was a weird time; I'd say their music was more geared toward the middle-school/high-school crowds in their first 2 albums. Gift was certainly an album that Stephen Richards says was just them trying to be/sound cool.
As unpopular as it could sound; my favorite work of theirs is Blue Sky Research. I know Billy Corgan helped with some of the direction of that album, but for the most part; its a huge step forward for them as a band that I felt they were creating these beautiful sounds and melodies instead of just trying to get me to break windows and smash walls in wild mosh pits.

Been seeing a few people shout out Chevelle again in the comments; I would love to see you get to something from _La Gargola,_ but something other than _Take Out the Gunman._ It's a great single, but others on there like _An Island,_ _Jawbreaker,_ and _One Ocean_ are killer tracks, and really show off Chevelle's style.
    * I mean, really, just listen to _An Island_ anyone who hasn't. It's such a pounding riff and keeps you tied down with how heavy it is. I always head bang to this one.

I exclusively listened to Taproot on shuffle/repeat through a Sony discman (that fit into my jeans pocket) while on the train to and from University while reading Dracula to pass the time... So even though he's an undead character that's hundreds of years old conjured up in 1893, Count Dracula will forever have slick Nu-Metal persona in my head 🤘

Ok this is actually a really good one! I remember hearing this at 5:30am before school on the radio station I’d listen to in high school. It reeeeeally caught my ear for some reason, so I’m already stoked to hear you deconstruct this. Very much a nostalgic ear worm.

Oh man I was so excited when I read the title. I loved Taproot when I was in high school. Honestly, I still do. Usually two or three times per year I go through their discography, with their first two albums being my favorite. I know Poem and Calling were pretty big radio hits but I think they were a really underrated band. Other popular bands at the time were Trapt and Hoobastank and while they are decent too, Taproot is so good (a bit darker which I like)

Their bass player quit last year, and their guitar player left like 5 years ago and they have been revolving through drummers. I doubt they put something together due to the singer’s health issues.

I've been a subscriber for awhile now and love the way you break these songs down to expose their bones and sinew. This video is one of your best reviews in my opinion. Doesn't hurt that it's an absolute banger of a song. ;) Keep up the good work, Decomposer!

I just found you but you have great reactions, found you through the Disturbed one and I went way down memory lane reading your comments on this one. I really did not think I'd see a Taproot reaction but I appreciate you doing this, new subscriber for sure.

Man geebz I love the channel and this is just amazing as a 32 year old drummer who’s dad was a drummer. I could never get him to even barely listen to any of the music I got into in this era because he couldn’t get over the “screaming” music. It’s like you are filling the hole that I’ve wanted to be able to share with my father this whole time. Big fan here!

One of the first songs I downloaded off of Napster when I joined the Navy and my roommate had it on his computer. That mix album took like three days to download. Korn, POD, Taproot, Lost Prophets, and so on. I miss the late 90’s early 2000’s.

Yea it was badass in the later 90s, definitely awesome and he really only uses that distortion really on one or two words and I really dig that.

Wow, I'd nearly forgotten about this song. Yeah, it's definitely one of those songs that uses those easy hooks to pull you in. I still enjoy it, but this song to me has remained a "Happy Meal" in context of the Era that I enjoyed it, where my tastes have now grown to enjoying a proper grilled cheese burger with all the toppings on it.

A+! I thought I could tear a song up a bit after first watching your "46 & 2" video. I was wrong of course. I've heard and used to sing in a band "46 & 2" about a million times combined so that made sense. I used to love this particular track in my early 20's but that's about as far as it went. The throw away, one hit wonder types. You tore it open though and I had no clue. Your face read pop garbage most of the time but you found appreciation in the song anyway. Kudos sir! Subscribed!

God, this takes me right back to high school. Yes Geebz, this song was a hit and everyone I knew was listening to this when I was young. It feels a bit trite to me now, but wow the nostalgia
