This video really came in clutch! Thanks a lot
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Chris I use this method to add extra storage on my stick but this is nice as well Happy holidays.
That's great, I hope you have a great Christmas too!

Yeah I have 2 x 16gb USB drives connected to otg cable with one formatted for internal use for apps and the other I put films on with a file explorer and use Mx player to play them with, merry Xmas Chris 👍
Thanks for the info, Merry Christmas to you too!
So you can connect 2 usb drives at the same time? cheers-
I've connected a 500gb hdd using a USB hub with external power supply and it works great
Good to know!
Hey Chris. How do you download a video from the firestick to the external hard drive? I have 64 GB thumb drive and the hub connections, I just need to know the steps. Sorry but I’m technically illiterate! Thanks.
Thanx Chris….. shared
Thanks for sharing
how do I watch films on a USB stick on a fire tv with os 6? How do I do the terminal commands and what commands
I am hoping to do a video on this very soon, make sure you have subscribed to my channel.
Hello I don't mean to sound rude but it's been 4 weeks and I really want to play movies for my dad on his fire tv when will the video be released?
If you have a Laptop/PC you can also stream off the local network so share a folder with VLC app on the fire, any videos, images, music etc you put in that folder you can access :)
Thanks for the tip!
Nothing beats playing offline via ext hd. No freezing. No buffering. No nothing.
@@MemorexBeatz I completely agree, there is nothing really that could interrupt the stream.
@@cwtek1 Even an outage (power or Internet). I have a digital generator I use for my fridge, some lights and my TV/media
Do you still need an internet connection (after initial setup) to watch HDD videos? I'm thinking of using an old HD monitor in my camper-van.
No you do not need an internet connection, have a look at this video which shows you how to launch apps without an internet connection. ruclips.net/video/7ZnwhCnJ1A0/видео.html
Is it possible to run a selection of vids on a loop? I’m using the Firestick as a video player on a projector. Save on having to haul out an old laptop.
If you can find an app that you can make a playlist on then it may be possible.
Hi Chris. The reason i got the external storage was because streaming big files (HD/4K movies) had the buffer issues, but since the external usb must be fat32, it cannot store larger than 4GB files, defeating the whole purpose. Am I missing anything here because except for shows hardly any movie files is 4gb or less.
You can try converting you films to a smaller file size.
@@dacedruss Much more expensive though!
ruclips.net/video/qoQkGQiylBM/видео.html
This might help you brother
Thanks for the video. When I connect my hdd to otg cable the fire stick stops responding but after 10 seconds fire stick starts working but the Hdd stops. What could be the issue?
Your firesticks power supply might not be delivering enough power to the Hard Drive, try and find a USB Power supply that can deliver 3 amps.
Thanks. Very helpful video. I have a technical question. I have downloaded a movie that has various audio (languages). and subtitle options when I watch it on VLC on my computer. Will I be able to access those options when using VLC for Fire stick? Thank you.
Yes
@Chris Waite - My Firestick 4k Max is connected to the Ethernet Adapter. I Unplugged the USB power lead from the Ethernet adapter and plugged in the OTG lead, plugged power into the OTG lead, plugged in a USB stick (4Gb) formatted to FAT32, but my Firestick isn't showing the USB storage. Power is getting to the Firestick as it boots up OK.
My USB stick is FAT32 and it works fine in my PS3 console.
Is the problem caused by connecting the OTG lead to the Ethernet adapter? Does this mean I would need to remove the Ethernet adapter and run Firestick on WiFi Internet?
Please advise.
Can you try plugging the OTG cable directly into the Firestick then plug the Ethernet into the OTG and see if that works, you could also try getting a power adapter that delivers 2amps, as it could be the power adapter might not be able to deliver enough amps to power the Stick, the ethernet and the OTG.
@@cwtek1 Yes, I plugged the OTG cable into the Firestick and it's now recognising my USB stick. I'm currently now using WiFi as I need an adaptor to connect my Ethernet adaptor and I've ordered one that'll arrive tomorrow.
Hello Chris : How do you make VMC display film covers with theVLC for firestick ? I am using VLC to display my digitised films from ùmy NAS. but it will display only a generic folder icon or generic film icon . Even if if include a .jpg file in each film folder?
I am not sure you can, I’m afraid but if anyone knows different then let us know.
@@cwtek1 but if we look at your RUclips video, when you browse using VLC , clearly thumbnails appear . I have tried to add a jpg file in each film directory , but VLC seems to ignore them when displaying the directories.
@@dahkowgmailcom yes it automatically selects a frame from video there does not seem to be any way to set a cover or custom thumb as far as I can tell.
There is a program you can download (cant remember the name) and it lets you attach a jpg movie cover to the video file. I have tried this and have seen it show the cover art when playing movies through my Xbox One video player, not sure about VLC.
Do i need wifi after the fact as in can i just plug in my usb drive after updates and vlc installed? Basically if im somewhere without mobile data or wifi?
No you do not need wifi, please see this video for more information on using your firestick without the internet ruclips.net/video/7ZnwhCnJ1A0/видео.html
Is there still no way to play larger than 4g video files from your external drive on your Firestick? If so that kind of sucks, are there other Smart TV devices that would allow that?
Unfortunately not unless you have the 3rd Gen fire tv cube which can read the NTFS file system.
Right. Well done. This was a brilliant explanation of nearly what I need to accomplish. I have a NAS with Dr. Who from 175 through 1980, Every Red Dwar and Benny Hill episode, most of the Monty Python and Fawlty Towers shows, and all three series of Catherine Tate. I'd like to show my friends some of those, but I can't seem to connect my NAS to my Fire Stick.
I've just added Absolutely Fabulous, and I'm still looking for Allo, allo and Dad's Army.
Cheers.

Lol he blurred out a couple seconds of a generic ocean helicopter shot because he was worried about a bogus copyright strike.
The powers that be are very strict and will issue these for literally a few seconds.
@@cwtek1 I think it would have been okay.
@@cwtek1 You showed what was playing on your TV. A couple seconds of it. Fair use applies here, but also the copyright algorithms look for that specific video, not for that video playing on a TV recorded by pointing a camera at a screen. These things are often defeated by flipping a video left to right, as the porn tubes do. You are concerned, sure, but your self-censorship is obnoxious.
@@TheRealCaptainFreedom I don't trust the powers that be's automated systems, I done a video of a transmitter shutdown which just showed some BBC trails and then static as the feed was about to cut to the overnight news, the BBC put in a copyright claim! Also YT have given me over 15 strikes and ended up overturning them because their system got it wrong. Just not worth the risk.
@@TheRealCaptainFreedom If it bothers you so much go upload copyrighted material in your RUclips channel.
Chris sorry for being a pain, but I cannot get my videos onto my USB. I am able to get apps including VLC onto my USB, but every time/ I tried to move a video from my Windows laptop to my USB, I get the following message. error 0x80070057.
I perhaps should have mentioned I am now trying to do this on my new 4k Max Firestick, and I had no problems moving my videos to the same USB when using my old Firestick 4K, but to do this I had to partition the USB, could this be the problem?
Ant help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me nuts.
Thanking you in advance for any help
I would perhaps use a different USB just make sure it has been formatted to fat32, I am also using a 4k max in the video.
@@cwtek1 Thank you Chris I will give it a go.
I notice in the video you already had the movies on the usb before connecting it to firestick. How do you add more movies to the USB stick without removing it? I have movies on my PC that I want to transfer to the usb stick ,but it is very hard to reach my firestick once I mounted it behind tv in wall. Is there an FTP server that can write directly to the external USB storage from my pc?
You need turn the firestick off at the mains, then unplug the USB then plug in to your PC copy the movies you want to add to the usb then, plug back into the firestick before turning back on.
@@cwtek1 The point was, my firestick is very very to reach to remove the usb stick. I didhowever, find MiXplorer and was able to setup the firestick as a FTP server. I was able to directly FTP to the firestick USB using Filzila on my PC
I tried this, and when I plugged the USB into the laptop, it didn't recognize the drive anymore.
Hello, if my TV has a USB port, can I connect the USB stick there and access its videos from the fire stick VLC app? (therefore not requiring the OTG cable)
Only if your TV has VLC on it, you could not play the videos from VLC installed on your firestick with the usb plugged into the TV.
@@cwtek1Thank you for your answer! Sorry I didn't understand it, if I have VLC installed on the firestick, can I use it to play videos in the USB stick connected to the TV USB port?

Amazon tv cube support external hard disk same as this stick.???
Yes it is with mine.
I formatted to fat32, it's under 2tb, and got VLC but my videos are freezing within a few seconds with the audio still playing. Any ideas on how to fix? It also freezes on other video player apps.
Check your hard drive is not failing, plug it into a pc and run crystal disk info.
Need more power For harddrive !

I have a 2-in-1 USB Stick, with a USB A on one end and a USB Micro (C) on the other. I want to watch videos on my Fire TV Cube. Do I still need the OTG cable? Or is that just for plain USB sticks that only have USB 2.0/3.0 connections?
If you have the 3rd Gen Fire TV Cube with the USB A socket I am sure you can just plug the stick straight in.
@@cwtek1 Not sure if it’s gen. 3 or 2. I bought it a few months ago on Prime Day, but I think it’s gen. 2. I’ll try anyway. Thanks for the swift reply!
@@patriciamillin1977 The 3rd Gen was only released this week, so you have probably got a 2nd Gen, you will need a OTA cable for that.
@@cwtek1 Okay, thanks!
Can I put the same video on loop?
Yes when the video is playing hold down the Middle Button Or OK Button then go to the 3 dots in the bottom right, then go to A-B repeat, go to the start point then go to set start point then go the end point and set end point, then play the video and it will go on a loop between the start and end points.
helpful : )
Glad it helped!
Ok...so I'm a little confused: to be able to watch movies from our external drive onto FirestickTV, the drive needs to be formated/free of the movies on the drive we want to watch before attaching to FirestickTV?
You need to ensure the firestick is formatted to Fat32 if it’s not then backup the movies on to your computer, then format the drive to Fat32 then copy the movies back to the drive and plug it into the stick.
@@cwtek1 Quite annoying really as to transfer a file bigger than 5gb I need exFat so may as well just put in the USB on the tv as that can only handle Fat32 as well haha
I know this is an 'older' video but I have the OTG cable and for some reason the audio lags pretty badly from the movies on the USB drive. Anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?
I haven’t faced this issue myself but would recommend using a different usb drive.
Hi....Does it play DTS or Dolby digital movies from pen drive or hard disc
I believe it does.
@@cwtek1 thank you Chris 😊👍
Hello, i want to get my 4k, dolby vision movies i have saved on my PC to my TV, what would be the best option? Just put them on a HHD drive and connect it to my TV? Do i need an external media player?
Thank you very much!!!
You need to find out what size hard drive and formats your TV will support, then make a decision from there.
@@cwtek1 thanks. its a LG C2.
ive read something about LG smart share or PLEX do you know if that would work too?
@@christianlandmann9759 If your TV can install Plex then you can install the Plex server on your computer and stream the films from there if your network is fast enough.

need to remove my oldmovie hd icons in firestick 4k max installed from external storage ?? any idears
Normally if you remove a film it should remove the icon with it, I am not sure about this if anyone knows the answer please feel free to comment.
Is not working on a fire stick lite. is that a problem of the Lite version?
Which fireos do you have?
Nice work with drive less to 2_ TERABYTE 6:10
since there is a file limitation for a FAT32 file system of 4GB, some movies in mkv or mp4 are larger than so you can't watch it on firestick since you won't be able to put a movie that is greater than 4GB on a fat32 usb drive
Yes that it correct there is no way round that apart from perhaps encode in x265 and try and get the file lower than 4gb.
I loaded films onto a 1tb drive. Pluged into firestick and worked. ok. That was two weeks ago. yeasterday will not work with drive plugged in, removed drive working again .plug drive in it just stopps win not run any idears ?
Are you powering the firestick with the power cable and mains plug that came with your firestick or are you powering it from the TV or a different plug?
@@cwtek1 powered by Berls fire TV stick power. from Amazon

The whole reason for usb otg is to reap the benefit for 4k ability of firestick but most of the downloaded files are more than 4 gb it makes no sense as firestick uses fat32..
2nd thing how to make it play dolby digital+ 5.1 surround sound.. ive tried kodi n all but they are not working
Unfortunately, Amazon really want you to stream this stuff, rather than play your own!
Hi everyone this method requires OTG cable.

Try an app like VLC Player to play it.
Im watching movies and always stops, what can i do?

Infelizmente não reproduz filmes com tamanho maior que 4gb!
I am afraid this is a limitation of the Fat32 file system. Unfortunately only the latest fire tv cube 3 is the only device able to recognise the NTFS file system which can store files larger than 4gb.
I copied the movie from the mobile to the drive, how to play it on the fire stick
Use something like VLC Player
My firestick stops
I am sorry to hear that!
j7
Ntfs
Only fat32 support on firestick
NTFS is proprietary of Microsoft.
People have reverse engineered it, but... meh.
I bet Amazon doesn't wanna even start a possible copyright war for something this small.
It's best to use something well documented (like FAT32) rather than using hacked drivers to access your USB stick.
I need a way to stream with a ftp server. File manager doesn't like to actually stream. I don't own a computer I strictly use a phone. So I have an external hd attached to my router for a nas.
I am not sure myself, but if anyone reading this knows please feel free to post.
@@cwtek1 the main issue are the lack of good apps on Android TV's. Essentially you need a file manager & media player app that supports ALL formats. Which I have for my phone but they aren't compatible with Android tv.
@@UnknownUnitW10 Kodi is good on Android TVs you can connect via FTP/SMB/NFS etc and it will recognise most codecs, you can also attach VLC to a network share I believe.
