I love it how Hoff Sommers darts around and Peterson listens and quickly adds some of his ideas based on what she said. Then he takes the lead and darts around, then she adds her ideas on to what he's said. It's a really dynamic discussion that I commonly see when Sommers is in the panel.

Christina Hoff Sommers is very profound philosopher herself. I loved reading all her books. (The War Against Boys, One Nation Under Therapy, Who Stole Feminism.) The One Nation Under Therapy was pretty prophetic of what's going on now with the social justice warriors who've been indoctrinated into needing help from the authorities for every emotional hurt. She co-wrote it with Sally Satel, another excellent thinker, writer and psychiatrist.

Christina - I first came across a video (which I haven’t been able to find again) in which you described how you taught philosophy. You would teach philosophy A and get your students to agree. Then you’d teach philosophy B... which conflicted with philosophy A... and your kids would agree B is right and A was wrong. Then you’d go to C conflicting with B, etc. Ultimately, you had the kids see that there is a lot of nuance in the world.I really admire that approach...particularly in light of the existing political tensions.
While both the Left and Right have their extremists (the Left being more concerning at the moment), I believe your approach to teaching philosophy and having a philosophy dovetails nicely with Peterson’s comment that Left and Right should be viewed as yin and yang, not enemies.
Maybe there is an opportunity to create a RUclips series that speaks to philosophies that cater to those on the Left and others on the Right..and how each philosophy has strengths that both sides of the political aisle should know and acknowledge...and weaknesses that both sides should know and the philosophy advocate should strongly acknowledge.

That idea, which is cute now, could turn into wild assumptions if Peterson and Sommers were on tour together. I don't think that's reason enough for them to avoid the idea of touring, but I can understand why they wouldn't, ergo "avoid the very appearance of evil." Those of us who follow his work closely know that he isn't that kind of man. But people make up all kinds of things about him, you know?

Both of these incredible scholars highlight, for me, the most important point at the foundation of all these cultural firestorms: We've moved from the 'information age' to the 'misinformation age'. It falls to the consumer of the data to figure out what is valid information and what is not. The unfortunate reality is that the vast majority of the population struggle to get it right due to many reasons not least of which is the deliberate propaganda of falsehoods designed to influence public opinion from many different angles. There's much to do.

I was skeptical of this discussion, not sure whether to agree or not (mostly agreeing), and then they said this:
Sommers: "And you should probably know something about a conversation that has been taking place among 'geniuses, creative geniuses' over the century with one another and how . . .
Jordan: "Who else would you want to listen to?"
    Sommers: "Of course!"
People cannot decide for themselves what is "genius literature" or not; they have to have someone, perhaps even a group of people, decide for them?
How will they develop, as Jordan said: "their ability to sift through the chaff and get to the wheat"?
I do not think Jordan has faith in people like he says he does.
This is also an interesting comment that Sommers made:
"I think it was Andrea Gilles who said: 'Everything important to say has been said, but nobody's listening'; so you have to say it again, and again, and again . . "
Why is nobody listening? Probably because in their (i.e. Sommers and Jordan) ideology, they do not trust people to think; so the people get lazy. Also, I couldn't help but think that Sommers and Jordan do not want people to "listen" and think critically, as they want to remain smarter (more intelligent?) than their students.

Long before I have ever heard about Jordan Peterson I have read Dostoevsky. Brothers Karamazov is absolutely the best piece of literature I have ever read. And, one day I was surfing the net to see if there was any lecture on Dostoevsky. And there it was this guy who was filming his lectures. He was a bit chubby and quite eloquent. So I started following the guy. Things he said resonated with my own thoughts. I was even critical about some of his views on Crime and Punishment, but, nevertheless, we were still on the same page, and, now 4-5 years later he is a superstar, and I'm still a nobody.

So, two like-minded people agree. It would be more interesting to see someone actually challenge their beliefs in a calm, reasoned manner. This is too much like a "safe space" discussion. Now, abandoning the traditional Western canon is of course nonsense. But what if we instead expand the number of perspectives and ideas we have in the Western canon?

Peterson has great reasoning on the idea of canon and the criticism it's gotten lately. Defining what constitutes the canon technically is not an issue, as he said. However, the criticism is so unclear and vague, actually it's non-existent. Hashtag keep-canon-of-litterature. Great discourse by Hoff Sommers and Peterson!

Thank you Christina you're an amazing woman. Thank you for all your good work. My mom has recently passed and you remind me of her. Reasoned arguments based on facts and history, what a concept! It almost seems like common sense. When teaching children my mother always said patience and repetition. I know it may seem like you have to keep repeating yourself but please stick with it. These kids today and I say kids maybe some of them are college students but they act like kids need to hear an alternative viewpoint , The Marxist, radical feminist and racist crap they're being taught is absolutely toxic. Our society is being assaulted. It is a multi-pronged attack. Through the media the universities politicians and unlimited immigration the values we stand for will be utterly eroded. People take for granted the amazing society that we have built. The America we know and love will not make it through another 20 years of this. Please keep up the good work. I continue to educate myself and spread the word anyway I can, but I can do more. I will.

I hate to make such a vulgar comment on such a wonderful video but dialogue between these two intellectuals less than an hour long is a feeling akin to being teased for the same amount of time. We the audience are hungry for longer format discussions! With that said, it was still superb considering the time that was given but ultimately it lacked proper depth

2:55 true, its barely possible to do it on the individual level. Its hard to distinguish scientific peterson from peterson 'the symbolist'
Which culture is at the bottom for an individual from a diffrent culture? The current one, or the one he was born in? Needs clarification.
This doesn't mean that the claim is scientifically relevant. Some prefer low-fantasy and some high-fantasy. But high-fantasy won't become 'historical' fact just because its riggorous.
7:55 is clearly talking about subjective to intersubjective value, which means any idea living today has essentialy value. "IF other people see the value" . The lowest standard for value i have ever heared. No riggor needed. Thats essentialy the most post-modern claim ever.
Great art fights for itself? How about letting it fight. The irony is that someone telling you its great art is the exact opposite. Being possesed isn't the same as letting the idea speak for itself. Sure it speaks through you, but so does everything any ideological person repreats.

The recycling of ideas and the lack of interest in the classics kind of explains why there are so many "new" "independent" "opressed" ideas out there. People simply don't realize that the trendy "new idea" has been thought (and tested) before.
