  • Viper is the last of the three Arrow Dynamics seven-inversion coasters remaining after the other two, Shockwave at Six Flags Great America & the Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags Great Adventure, were demolished in 2002 & 2010, respectively.
    When it opened in April 1990, Viper was the tallest & fastest looping coaster in the world, until the Kennywood opened Steel Phantom the following year. Viper regained that title when Steel Phantom was modified into Phantom's Revenge (where it lost its inversions) in 2001 & held the title until Hersheypark opened Storm Runner in 2004.
    Six Flags Magic Mountain is located north of Los Angeles in Valencia, California.

    I almost didn't ride this because everyone on the Internet says it is so uncomfortable and painful. This is why you don't always trust the internet. The ride was amazing. My shoulders hurt a little from the old restraints, but it's not that bad. We did notice that it is slightly less comfortable for shorter people because their heads are between the restraints, but again, slightly. My mom hates rides that shake her up but she is glad she rode this one. This ride does not give everyone headaches and ruin the rest of the rider's day like the Internet says. Definitely extremely underated. Is it the smoothest ride? No. But it's not that rough either.

      I've ridden Viper numerous times and nothing was as rough as the last time I got on it. I felt like I was being tossed around in a dryer.
      As it gets older it seems to be getting worse. I truly wish Six Flags would invest in newer trains with better head restraints. After my last ride I officialy retired Viper from my coaster list.

    Some history - I was there on media day when Viper opened, and it was a MUCH different animal. It was HUGE. Noticeably taller than anything we'd ridden before, and because X2 was not there, the entire back half of the ride was a mystery. You could see just the tops of the butterfly element, but had no idea how it fit into the ride, and the corkscrews were almost invisible from anywhere but the front row station line and the lift. It was glass smooth, the transitions were clean, and it was amazingly fast. Viper was unlike anything we'd seen on the West Coast, and by most accounts, was the best of the Arrow looper triumvirate, mostly due to the wicked fast turnaround (more on that below) after the first loop and the unexpected left hand jog on the way back to the station.
    I'll start by saying that Arrow loopers generally get rougher and rougher as they age; this is attributed both to slight distortions in the track (stress bends) and shifts in support position attributed to the g-forces exerted on them. I'll leave train wear (and horse collar restraints) out of this, although I'm sure it's a factor as well.
    In the case of Viper, there have been many and clearly visible track and support modifications to stiffen the steel to prevent shearing and cracking due to the extreme forces the ride generates. This is not inherent to Viper specifically, as both the sister coasters had many of the same modification prior to demolition.
    A quick web search will show that the original design allowed the track and supports to flex, which minimized the effect of the train slamming into the inversions, which are all very small compared to today's standards.
    The most obvious additions were made to the tops of the three vertical loops; the crisscross bracing was added many years later, after Six Flags noticed that the metal fatigue was becoming an issue. Instead of allowing the the loop to 'breathe' as the train's weight shifts through the loop, the bracing prevents kinetic energy (or at least reduces it) from moving away from the car and transfers it back to the rider, which is why neck stiffness has become a complaint.
    This was done because, simply put, the speed out of the first drop was extreme, and as we see now, with the loops immobilized, the change in direction is quite noticeable. It also seems that the train dips ever so slightly just as the train enters the second loop, though that may be imagined. Either way, the stiffened loops equate to a more brutal ride, especially with the speed that Viper carries. Or carried.
    The most disappointing thing about this final iteration of Viper is the horseshoe turn out of the first loop. This was a thing of beauty, and was amazing both to experience and to watch from the ground.
    There was no bracing between the supports. Oddly, a quick scan doesn't bring up a picture (i have a few around here somewhere), but each support stood free of the others, allowing the supports to flex outward noticeably as the train moved through the turn, creating a slingshot effect, as the train was literally thrown from the turn into the second loop.
    The effect was awesome, as you didn't feel so much like you were going through the turn as you were being 'caught' by it, if that makes any sense, and there was a lot less lateral shaking. In my opinion, this was the finest moment on Viper, one that sadly, is no more. The bracing that was added about a third of the way up was surely necessary, as the flexing was very noticeable (we'd sit and watch it as we stood in the long line leading up to the station house) and had to be creating maintenance nightmares from day one.
    And so, with a stiff u-turn came the need to slow the train down so that riders didn't compress their spines to mush, and thus the addition of a trim brake just off the first loop was added. That's right...it wasn't there when the ride opened. The first brake was on the run just prior to the dive into the butterfly (I think the trim before the corkscrews was there, but I don't remember it being as noticeable. Also, the trims before the butterfly element were lighter, but I think it's better with them on hard, as you get the hang time in the inversions. When the ride opened, you blew through the butterfly so fast, it was over before it began.
    At any rate, it's a bummer to see people bashing on Viper, as I know that they are not experiencing the ride as it was designed...those who know and remember still rank it as one of the top coasters ever built, though it's understandable that the current state of Viper leaves a lot to be desired, especially in the face of B&M and other designers who have taken loopers to the next level and beyond.
    I watched the death of Shockwave at Gurney with a 'WTF?' and GASM at Jersey with a 'Uh oh...Viper's days are numbered', although I hope that Viper's smaller footprint and design upgrades from the first two loopers may give it legs, as there are many other Arrow loopers still running strong all over the country, but my gut tells me Viper's time is almost up. That's a huge piece of land, and Six Flags likes to build their biggest and baddest at Magic Mountain, and right up front where people can see them from the highway.
    Once it's gone, I'll look back fondly at that magic Christmas Day in 1992 when the park was nearly empty and my buddy and I clocked 14 straight runs without leaving our seat in the last car. We came off the ride bent and battered from the repeated g-forces, but happy as clams.
    If you never got to ride it in it's glory...well...sorry for you. Those who did know what it was.

      +Scot Apathy Thank you sir! I am really far from the united states, and my only motivation to travel there is just to ride this huge piece of steel, take pictures and watch it run. • @Descaines
      @Descaines 8 лет назад +2

      RawRollercoasters It would be awesome, but maybe too expensive. Getting those new vekoma trains to reduce the headbanging and repair some transitions in the track would be cheaper, i think. Arrow was competing with B&M so it would be awkward to have them redoing their designs.

      Scot Apathy Fantastic post! Thumbs up for you. I first rode it in the early 90s at night when Batman was brand new and seeing those fireworks right before that first drop was absolutely magical, especially feeling the night wind rushing over you as you took on each loop. Even the last time I rode a couple years ago I had no problems with it.

      I get moola and that rides have to carry their weight in a park. But part of me wishes there was more of a heritage or historical marker for coasters, I know some get listed. But we don't value the heritage in them like we do houses or buildings. Just kind of wish we did. That way more of these intense classics would get saved. Yeah, they're not the smoothest, but with a listing, the rider knows they are on history and that its part of the experience. If you follow.

    • @AdventuresByJake
      @AdventuresByJake 7 лет назад +1

      Wow, what an awesome story. Thank you for sharing. As a big fan of Viper, I am sad to see so much hate toward it nowadays. The ride is definitely wild, but I don't find it painful as many do (I'm 6'1" and my head clears the restraints by quite a bit, so I don't get banged up as much, that might have something to do with it).
      I am fortunate enough to have SFMM as my home park, and I'm definitely getting in as many rides as I can on this gargantuan piece of history before it inevitably gets put out to pasture and sent screaming into the annals of theme park history.
      Thanks again for sharing.

    I've been on Viper hundreds of times over the years (live & grew up in LA)...this is a pretty smooth ride; it can get a little shaky during the pretzel loops, but nowhere near as bad as the painfully violent head banging on X2. When Viper debuted, you could see it from the freeway, and there weren't any other coasters nearby and it looked HUGE and intimidating, but now it looks average sized since they built X2, Tatsu, and Superman. That first loop though is really high and awesome.

      I waited 16 years to ride it (ever since watching here comes a rollercoaster and playing RCT2 for the first time) but heard bad reviews from it and expected it to feel like Great American Scream Machine (which was pretty bad) so I didn’t know what to expect when I finally rode it and I actually got off really liking it, it didn’t have as bad of a rattle as most other Arrows and the transitions actually felt natural and not jerky like some of the older arrows. Id definitely recommend riding this thing if you’re a fan of arrows and I’d say to find your way out there in the next few years before it gets scrapped or refurbished

    I remember watching the Six Flags commercial's back in the 90's and wanting to go there just to ride Viper. That was when Colossus and Viper were their two main coasters in the park. Viper just reopened in Feb after a couple of months of refurbishment, but they forgot to repaint the red color. The only major problem with Viper is the break run, that needs to be removed cause it slows the coaster down. Back in 2008, I rode Canyon Blaster at Adventuredome 16 times in two hours before the park closed.

    You all are very right, this coaster is drastically more uncomfortable than most any other coaster in the park (except for green lantern one, OUCH MY BALLS!!) They really need to freshen this one up, because it’s still one of my all time faves. Pro tip... sit in the very back seats of this coaster. Trust me!

    Why do people insist on not filming the track right as its about to turn into the first drop. Second video in a row of this ride where they turn the camera away from the tracks just as its about to take off.

  • @GigaG11

    I believe that they are not clones. I've never been on any Arrow 7-looper, but by comparison GASM and Shockwave are almost clones, Shockwave's double loop went the other way. Also GASM looked like it had a longer MCBR and transitions, as well as nearly stopping on the MCBR. GASM was taller and faster, if memory serves. I believe Viper has the same elements organized in a tighter, more compact layout.

    Disclaimer: NO SHADE: Ok, so I went on this ride summer of 2016 on vacation. None of my family members would get on with me because it was “too rough for them”. I have to admit, it was so smooth, I rode next to this really nice dude who filmed the entire ride and we had a nice conversation about birds

    I rode this when it was fairly new in 1991. I do NOT recall all those trim breaks between elements other than after the after the 3rd loop. Did wear, tear, and stress really call for this ride to be tweaked to the point of considering to NOT ride it at all?🤔

    Ok so after they referbished it In 2018 there is a funny tip. Do not get on the yellow train, always wait for the red train as I experienced significantly less head banging on the red train. Plus the yellow train doesn’t really go through the brakes well so you are going way too fast through the second half of the ride. The Red train nearly comes to a stop at that mid-course brake run. I rode twice one on the red train and one on the yellow, the Red was a lot more enjoyable
