Back in the late 1980s. So I have ridden every roller coaster they had at the time countless times. And after I stopped working there. They installed in 1989 and opened viper April 7th 1990. I rode this in August 2021. Honestly, I didn’t think this ride was too bad. I was expecting it to be rather rough and terrible, but instead I found myself enjoying it. In fact, it brought back memories of riding Great American Scream Machine at Great Adventure, which I sorely miss. I’m truly amazed at how this Arrow Mega-Looper managed to outlive Vortex, GASM, Shockwave, and even the ill-fated Drachen Fire. I’d honestly be shocked if it manages to outlive Darien Lake’s Viper as well as Fantasia Special (the Arrow Looper in South Korea that has a Triple-Corkscrew lol), although eventually at some point in the future this ride will be demolished and replaced with something brand new.
I’ve obviously never been on this ride, but I really hope they preserve it unlike the other Arrow 7-loop coasters. In my opinion, these rides should be built to last a lifetime, not a mere 20, 30 years. How could they favor some other kind of ride over a very classic, unique one like Viper?

This is the last remaining Arrow mega-looper. I could see it being removed for a giga if Six Flags wanted to go in that direction. Otherwise, I hope it stays around for many years to come as the last of its kind. You can see how Arrow improved their mega-looper design over the 3 that they built. Shockwave and Great American Scream Machine had short service lives, but they seem to have really figured it out by the time they built Viper. I think it's no coincidence that Viper has lasted so much longer. It has better pacing with fewer trims, doesn't stop on the MCBR, and is smoother. After Viper, Arrow went on to build Steel Phantom in 1991, and Drachen Fire in 1992, but unfortunately both were complete failures, with Steel Phantom being modified after only 10 years, and Drachen Fire just being scrapped. If Arrow had stuck to a layout closer to that of Viper, then I think they could've perfected it even more.
I rode on VIPER June 8, 1990. It was then the newest big deal at Magic Mountain. Watching this video I can't believe I didn't get sick that day so long ago. Lol. There's no way I could handle this coaster today. Sure is great to be able to say I did ride it once way back when, though.
Viper is an Arrow Dynamics coaster so each one has the signature intense ejector air time feeling on the first drop. Yes, you will experience the “feeling” and it may be mildly painful from how intense it is. You will feel your organs distinctly moving up while your body is being pulled down.
There's no doubt in my mind that it will. I hope they end up redoing the track instead of taking it down when six flags does get back to it though. But neither of those things will happen until many years from now.
She’s a legend, a mainstay, her time is coming to an end most likely, if Six Flags has any money left which is looking like they don’t. A Giga B&M should take its place under the same name…
Every time I rode Viper it wasn't as rough as people say it is (nowhere near as smooth as Scream, which is a similar ride with many loops and made by a company known for smooth coasters, but not a pain machine either). The second half of the ride can be rough if you're not riding it correctly (the first half you can tell it's an old coaster but it's not bad at all), but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as Revolution with the shoulder restraints (a LOT of head and ear banging no matter how you rode it).
This is my favorite ride period. I once rode this three times back to back to back once in the front row, once in the middle once from the back. it was a slow day there. if you hold on you don't get banged around as much at least for me anyway. I mean yeah its fun throwing your hands up but I found holding on I guess if your strong enough it don't hurt as bad.
YES. its rough but just lean your head towards where the ride is going and you’ll be fine. this ride is CRAZY forceful and overall really fun. those first inversions almost made me grey out from the intensity and it whips you right out of your seat. the only thing holding this back is how rough it is. but i definitely recommend riding this
Sadly Viper is the last operational Arrow Mega Looper/7 inversion coaster left. All the other are gone now. And of the 3 Arrow loopers ive been on i cant decide between Loch Ness and Tennesee Tornado as my number 1.
The Final Destination 3 coaster was not at Canada's Wonderland. It was in Vancouver. It was also tiny compared to Viper. Other than both being red and having a corkscrew they were nothing alike.
Until I watched this I had forgotten Viper is the same layout as Shockwave at Six Flags Great America. I always slightly blacked out after the 3rd loop.
Lmao just watching this video, I can feel my head banging against the head rest. Viper, for everyone who hasn’t had the (dis?)pleasure of riding it, is ROUGH!!!
Banged my head up every time I rode it. Though if you put your hands in the right place on the shoulder restraints, it'll cushion the blows. Gnarly butterfly loop, so bumpy. Yhe view from the top of the hill is pretty great though.
This was the first roller coaster I've ever rode. I still remember hitting my head on the back really hard. Definitely try to keep your head held back if you don't want a concussion. 😭
Viper and I go way back. I'm 3 years older than it. Really was the big baddie back in the day and I have fond memories with it. I love our polarizing coaster. I respect it for what it is, it's the last standing Arrow 7 inversion Mega-Looper. I vouch that it should be a coaster landmark. Also maybe it's because I'm tall that the restraints don't effect me much either. It is one tough ride.
My first coaster at the age of 10 in ‘95. My brother made me ride alone cuz he was with his gf they were 18 at the time. Never forgave em for it but it made me the man I am today 😂 great times! And a great introduction to roller coasters!
Do they have still the same trains as in the 90s? I know that in my own country (Netherlands) the old Arrow trains were replaced by new ones from Vekoma and all head banging was gone after they did that.
It was their only launch coaster until it was taken down in 2001. Over Georgia now finally has one after people were begging for one to be added after so many years of it missing from their lineup
Still like this coaster. I does matter where you sit if you get banged around. I ride in the front row and I swear I got whip lash. Not really but it was kinda hurky jerky up there. The corkscrews are the worst at the end for me. Overall it’s a fun experience. But I walk away a bit dizzy and need time to recover.
I really miss the great American scream machine great adventure in New Jersey. Yes it was rough and certainly not as thrilling as some of the newer coasters but there was something special about it.
It's Impressive Viper Is Still Going Strong After All Those Years And I Hope It Will Stay Like That Well. At Least Swap Out The Trains With Trains With Vest Restrains For A Smoother Ride Experience

That's what we almost got in the 2000 Clint Eastwood dramedy _Space Cowboys_ with Connery in the role of Team Daedalus engineer Jerry O'Neill before Donald Sutherland managed to win the part and get to ride Viper without breaking a sweat.
I live in the uk, never been to America before. Is viper really that bad? People have told me it's the roughest coaster ever, but I have seen a few on ride POV's and it doesn't look too bad
I don't really get why people hate this ride. It's actually a really good if you delete your expectations even with expectations, I still think it's really good
This ride looks so fun you people in california are lucky to have this ride. I want to start a croud fund campaign to have money ready for when they close this ride so i could buy it, do some reprofilimg to the track, have the old arrow trains modified to have comfort collars, and start my own amusment park that is dedicated to the history of coasters. It wont be like all in your face educational but along with having exciting new rides it would be a place where many rare and closed coasters and rides would find a home. I would have the hard to find parts recreated and order a century of replacement parts for each coaster so they would never reach the end of their service life.
It’s not suprising to me that the wait time for this ride is usually 10-5 minutes, considering that the actual experience is kind of painful. Nevertheless, not once did I actually regret going on the ride.

A classic, but the most brutal ride, you will feel it afterwards
Coming up on 32 years Viper (April 7, 1990)
Viper and I go way back. I'm 3 years older than it. Really was the big baddie back in the day and I have fond memories with it.
I love our polarizing coaster. I respect it for what it is, it's the last standing Arrow 7 inversion Mega-Looper. I vouch that it should be a coaster landmark.
Also maybe it's because I'm tall that the restraints don't effect me much either. It is one tough ride.
Anyone remember the ride shockwave? It was a standing coaster at MM. They shut it down because someone died on it.
This ride makes me feel dizzy and it is too intense to me because of 7 inversions
Yep.
They had a Viper boomerang version at (Atlanta) Six Flags Over Georgia. I remember rinding it when I was 11 or 12 years old. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
It was their only launch coaster until it was taken down in 2001. Over Georgia now finally has one after people were begging for one to be added after so many years of it missing from their lineup
Call me OCD but damn, give the track a fresh coat of red paint. Faded colors on anything, especially coasters, bothers me! Lol
I love this ride!!
Still like this coaster. I does matter where you sit if you get banged around. I ride in the front row and I swear I got whip lash. Not really but it was kinda hurky jerky up there. The corkscrews are the worst at the end for me. Overall it’s a fun experience. But I walk away a bit dizzy and need time to recover.
me and my cousin rode this yesterday it’s fun but really rough probably wouldn’t go on it again almost got a concussion
I really miss the great American scream machine great adventure in New Jersey. Yes it was rough and certainly not as thrilling as some of the newer coasters but there was something special about it.
How many loops was there?
3 vertical loops, plus a batwing (2 inversions), and 2 corkscrews, for a total of 7 inversions.
fun and scary your on viper roller coaster ate six flags magic mountain !!!!
It's Impressive Viper Is Still Going Strong After All Those Years
And I Hope It Will Stay Like That
Well. At Least Swap Out The Trains With Trains With Vest Restrains For A Smoother Ride Experience
I do like the vest restraints. It would definitely make the ride much more enjoyable.
@@ThemeParkPOV Let's Hope They'll Either Swap Out The Trains Or Give Viper A Re-Track
Or Both
Because I Can't Imagine Magic Mountain Without This Huge Mega Looper Plus The Fact That Viper Is The Last Mega Looper In Operation
@@singlerailindustries1763 I think they would give it new trains, if anything, because Arrow has been bankrupt for over 20 years, so its either new trains or no viper if they change something.
just imagine viper with lap bars lol
@@boltgaming248LMAOOOO. Bodies flying out right during the inversions.
Why do my ears turn red when I get of this ride?🤕
i got to ride this in august and it was great. i miss it :(
Really enjoyed your video!
They really need to change the restraints on this ride.
Viper lives on in the name of The great American scream machine
My favorite head banger 🙌🏽
Is this ride still rough? I’ve never been here before so that’s why I’m asking.
No
Depends where you sit. It’s REALLY rough at the back and pretty rough at the front. The middle seems to be a safe spot though
It's a head banger just went last night rode it 3 times and left with a headache
Could you imagine the late Sir Sean Connery riding this coaster? That's what we almost got in the 2000 Clint Eastwood dramedy _Space Cowboys_ with Connery in the role of Team Daedalus engineer Jerry O'Neill before Donald Sutherland managed to win the part and get to ride Viper without breaking a sweat.
I live in the uk, never been to America before. Is viper really that bad? People have told me it's the roughest coaster ever, but I have seen a few on ride POV's and it doesn't look too bad
it's smooth for like 7-6ft people but for like 5ft or lower is rough
Literally coming out of the viper I had a horrible headache because you hit your head during the attraction but its fun
Awesome coaster
I rode this and this was actually pretty scary but really fun lol
It’s not suprising to me that the wait time for this ride is usually 10-5 minutes, considering that the actual experience is kind of painful. Nevertheless, not once did I actually regret going on the ride.
Wanna try this
