Excellent summary. Obviously the phenomenon of status acquisition is not confined to any one society, creed or race in the world. Sadly, once ‘naturalised’ and embedded, status acquisition results in haves and have-nots, a widening gap between rich and poor, rigid class/caste distinctions, etc etc that are difficult and eventually impossible to bridge. In other words, the concentration of wealth and extreme capitalism in today’s globalised world. Just look at the threatening polarisation of people across our world. All of our incredible wealth, technology, education and modern know-how simply serves to buttress problems and inequalities rather than to solve them. It doesn’t augur well for the future I fear.
Simply love the way this episode is driven by deep meaningful questions... "How do you show you are a high status person?", "What is the primary purpose of education?", " Why would evolution care about status?" Great work by both to keep the conversation extremely engaging and meaningful. Also thanks Shrikant for twinning my counter questions.
Honestly, thank YOU for being our biggest supporter since day one! This might seem like exaggeration but I'm being 100% honest when I say that YOU have been a source of motivation for me personally to keep going... 🙏 - Shrikant
Ambani wedding costed them 0.1% of their total worth. They are not stupid. Us ordinary Indians are stupid who take loans and spend 40-50% of our wealth on weddings. Ultimately, the Ambani money is circulated back into the Indian economy and it helped so many craftsmen in the process. They also organised a marriage of 50 underprivileged couples and gifted them gold ornaments. In the last 45 days before the wedding, a bhandara was organised which fed approximately 20,000 people a day. Us ordinary Indians do nothing of this sort.If anything, We should learn from the Ambanis to be cost-efficient and wear our culture on our sleeve.
All those acts were to justify spending as much money as they could. They have a great PR team that did a good job, so much so that people like you will hop and defend spending 600 million on a wedding, in a country like India
@@melrickcrasta4629 Spending that much, in the context of a country with high economic inequality, is almost pornographic :)) It's legitimate, but arrghhh... Maybe I would do it myself if I were that rich? Maybe not .

The big weddings are so uncles and aunties can provide the industry of it all...flowers, cards, food etc. The college is for getting married and making business contacts.
Personal wealth distributed during celebration to decorators, artists, hospitality people, transporters , chefs, etc is actually empowering such like vocations. It is letting people earn their living during such rare opportunities/ events. It also showcases culture if conducted well , provides news to media and critics etc fruitfully. This is the third generation of an entrepreneur who started off as a petroleum outlet clerk in a foreign country and today provides livelihood, services and employment to millions of Indians. Every reality is a blessing and should be viewed positively and stabilized. Dhirubhai Ambani was not a Prince of Wales turned king by birth. Be proud of Indians who succeed.

Of course. I've focused on status because that's the one that most people over look. The others are obvious to everyone (food, protection, sex, etc). -navin
Supply Demand. The wedding industry has grown only to cater demands from people. When people's behaviour change, ie their proclivity to spend high on weddings reduce, (which won't happen overnight, would happen over a longer period of time), people employed in wedding industry would sense it and move to something more lucrative. People choosing to be prudent with their money, is not going to ruin the livelihood of those engaged in wedding industry. But a lack of willingness to change with changing demands definitely will. That's true of any business, not just the one around weddings.
The premise of capitalism is that by increasing production of goods and services & increasing consumption of the same, we would be able to grow as a society. It's a bet on the future. However unlike industries such as infrastructure, critical goods manufacturing, wedding industry is only adding a cultural value to life, not a tangible one. In a country like India where average household income is 22k INR per month (that's like 300-400USD), an undue amount of spend on weddings is not prudent for most of the population. They'd be better off spending that money on things that will increase their quality of life. This money would eventually funnel into industries that are actually making a tangible difference in quality of life. Which atleast partly adheres to the premise of capitalism. With empty expenditures such as wedding-related ones, the wheels of capitalism grind but they don't actually make the spenders life any better.

Truthfully, it is difficult. I don't know if there's a one-size-fits-all answer to your question but here's what I do: I equate the harm with something I desperately do not want to lose, for example, money. Like, is the 'increase' in status worth the expense? And, if I choose not to do this expense, will I be okay with the 'decrease' in status? As with everything in life, it is a trade-off that has different answers for everyone. I can afford an iPhone but is that additional 30k going to get me better clients? Nope, not in my field. But choosing low-quality mics and headphones will definitely affect my work and hamper getting more clients, so I spend A LOT on them! Another example, look at the Ambanis. If they had chosen to have a simple wedding, people might have mocked them for being 'kanjoos'. Or might have questioned if there were financial problems in the family! (Although, we might still have praised them for setting a good example, lol!) It seems like they weighed the pros and cons and probably decided not to risk a potential 'hit' to their status... :) So, yeah, this is a bit hand-wavy but, IMHO, there is no right answer here. The good news is that you have identified it as a self-harming cycle. Now you just need to figure out what exactly is being harmed and how you can reduce that harm, I guess! :) - Shrikant
I think it is just not attending lectures in IIT. It’s is the professor’s guidance and that atmosphere to excel and push yourself. It is a brand but it is not just a tag. It’s a different churning space and a lot opens up.
The main advantage is the campus placement and the recommendation by IIT professors, although a good number of IIT's BTech students switch their fields after completing their engineering degrees, which in turn suggests that they were chasing the IIT tag rather than having any interest in engineering itself.
6:50 a different perspective/observation , an investor would find the best market to get returns - if time-wasting by others happens to be a big market, there would be no qualms for investors in such markets ('let somebody attract somebody else - as long as somebody earns out of such theatrics') .. Social media, cinema, weddings, webseries, docuseries etc could fall under this category
A lot of people are employed in the wedding industry. If lavish weddings are providing employment and putting money back in the economy, why is it so bad? Ambani's money would have probably contributed a lot less if it was sitting in the bank.
@@Employer101 He meant that poor families are forced to spend beyond their capabilities on their children's marriages, which often makes them bankrupt. They waste money due to societal pressure.
Ambani wasted billions of rupees on rich Hollywood and Bollywood actors. They twerked for a few minutes and scooted off with huge amounts of cash. That money could have been used to build world-class hospitals, schools, etc., which would have helped multiple generations of needy individuals. However, his intent was to show off and increase his status rather than help those in need. The same thing is done by other wealthy people who spend their black money on lavish marriages. This not only raises their status but also increases their prospects of getting new clients, as more people become aware of them and their status in society. But the real disaster happens when poor and middle-class Indians try to emulate them under societal pressure, which often leads to bankruptcy.
