This is a quick video on how to troubleshoot audio microphone not working after updating to windows 10. You can use these fixes for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.
Just follow my step by step guide on fixing microphone not working and you should be able to resolve this common mic problem where you can't record audio via the microphone. Sometime you may get Windows 10 not detecting any microphones and if this is the case you can still use these fixes to resolve your microphone issue.

OMG You saved my life!!! Seriously, 10 plus hours of trying everything and all I had to do was go to the privacy settings. I didn't even think of that. 1,000 thank yous for making this video. Not all heroes wear capes. Unless you do wear a cape in which case maybe they all do haha.

Thanks man. I'd dumb and got all sketched out so I did disable the mic in Windows Privacy settings. I completely forgot and was wondering why it wasn't working no matter what I was trying. Thanks for going through all of the possible options. Guys, if you can't get your mic to work, just be patient and follow everything he does. I know you wanna go to RUclips and find a 30 second video on how to quickly fix the issue, but life doesn't work that way. Thanks again man, cheers.

i have realtek HD audio manager i can only hear through my headphones but my mic doesn't pick up on sound any solutions ?

@@IRbashboon ok, my problem is that since I have Realtek HD Audio Manager it somehow interferes with my heaphones... (i.e When I uninstalled the audio manager I could hear audio from headphones but when I reinstalled the manager first of all I couldn't hear audio from headphones and secondly the headphones weren't even appearing in the playback device list. I have no idea..
@@willf9646 i got the realtek HD Manager too. One thing I also did was disable everything i dont need so only my HyperX Headset was left to set as default
@@IRbashboon But do you know why my headset isn't popping up in the playback list of devices? Like I said before, it only appears when I uninstall Realtek audio manager. It's weird.. And if I did keep it uninstalled then I wouldn't be able to use my mic

I woke up at ~11pm and I see there is a Windows10 Forced update. Ah bloody hell I'll let it update it while I sleep. In ~9 hours I wake up and in a few games I noticed when I tried to use my microphone it wouldn't work. I watched this guide, Privacy>allow apps to use Mic (ON)>disable all the following apps below. BOOM it works. Now, before the microphone issue after the update I had to reinstall a Logitech driver because the update caused the keyboard light not to work. The weird part is that on the Microphone Privacy thing, before the update I am confident to say that I had the "allow apps to use microphone" set to off. I wish i could go back to Windows 7. : '( This Guide helped and thank you very much. It's a very simple, thorough but understandable video that doesn't add a bunch of rubbish. :)

the Privacy step is what fixed mine, apparently I had my mic off for all apps.
Same, it was so confounding that I actually ordered another microphone because I thought my Audio-Technica 2500 was broken somehow. It would have been really nice of Microsoft to notify users about the microphone control switch being moved to Privacy Settings better. Glad we've both got our mysterious microphone problem fixed, thanks to the amazing help of the video author! :)

Whenever I click on the microphone on settings the settings window just bounces up and down
I have the mic Alctron UM900 (really great one) and after I updated my Win7 to 10 it doesnt work. Tried to find solution for 2 years and I didnt find one. So sad

If you are using a hyper x product make sure your mic is fully plugged in and non of the grey part is showing
If your headsets are recognized as speaker and the mic is not working go to hyperx frequently asked questions and you will get a fix quickly.
You can also go to realtek audio manger and make sure “make front and rear output devices playback 2 different steams simultaneously “ is turned on and choose the second mic
make sure you have the headphone wore in the headphone jack and the mic wire in the mic in jack cuz that is something tht people get mixed up some of the time. also, try plugging in the headphones in the back of the computer (in the motherboard ) and if that worked then you either dont have you hd audio connected correctly or you dont have the audio drivers. the hd audio is very common also

Simple, I must have turned "use mic in apps off". Turning that "on" fixed it for me. Just search "privacy setting" in cortana. Issue solved if Discord isn't picking up your headset mic.
my microphone realtek High definition doesn't go through my hyper cloud stinger anymore, usually when i get close to the mic on my headset it makes the sound when you scream into the mic. I've been researching for over 10 hours and i can't find any result. Please leave a comment if you know how to fix this. Thank you.

if you have an xbox controller you can connect a usb into your computer and your controller and plug in your mic in the earphone jack under the controller and that should fix the problem
MS is pretty screwy. Off topic, when they updated Minecraft to 13.x (bedrock), it broke all the skins. In a similar fashion, they updated the audio stacks and they are completely unrecognizable. All sound card manufacturers had to redo everything. In the past 3 updates of Win10 (latest being 1909) they have been redoing the audio stacks each update and it KILLS all driver support. Bluetooth lags, microphones break, very seldom speakers will pop and crackle. Realtek releasd their spec to every manufacturer, and if your board's brand doesn't update the driver, you're out of luck forever I'm afraid... I have aorus gaming 7 z370, last update was in 2018. Until Gigabyte releases a new driver, I'll be out of luck in that department. I know they won't be updating. Works perfectly fine in Win7 and FreeBSD.

I just wanted to say thank you, truly thank you. It was becoming extremely frustrating that I could hear the sidetone of my mic, knowing it worked, but it wouldn't work with anything. The method - Start>Setting>Privacy> and reselecting "let apps use your mic" did the trick. You have earned yourself another sub.
