It's because while the island is a dream of the windfish, it's still in the real world. They exist, and want to continue to. The island fades but the clouds and the water around it stay. It's a melancholic adventure about destroying a whole island for the greater good.

The way that Marin's singing echoes at the end gave me chills. It's as if that was the sound of her existence fading away into nothing but a memory. If she really did become a seagull, then perhaps she visited another island girl.

We would have been the masters of this place... Wait, were you listening? Link? Where did you go?! Ah, guess we're the masters of this island now."
In the revised ending, Link hires the guys from Inception to enter the Wind Fish’s dream and get rid of the Nightmares, so the old fish gets to keep on sleeping peacefully and Koholint becomes an island paradise. As for Link, he joins the island folk, becomes a local hero, and he and Marin become a couple. Link, Marin and Mamu the singing frog become an ocarina/vocal music sensation, and the game displays “The End” to an upbeat version of the Ballad of the Wind Fish as all the residents of Mabe Village and Animal Village have a luau and barbecue on Toronbo Shores. This. THIS not only brings back so many memories (I was 9 when this game came out and I got it for Christmas), but THIS is what I had hoped for in a remake of Link’s Awakening. I literally cried at the end of this when I played the remake. It brought so much memories. I was 8 years old when this game was released in 1993 and I remember playing this game on the original game boy so many times. I love this game to death. It's my first Zelda game ever and I'll never forget it.
@@FelixS. Link's Awakening (Game Boy) is the first amazing game I've ever played, so you can guess how much I love it, and yet I think FFX has the most tragically beautiful ending I've seen in a VG. Some will say RDR, MGS3, SotC...
Devolgalf Well I disagree by heart. I found FFX overrated, absolutely linear tedious (no pun intended) and cliche. Even its bittersweet ending felt presictable to me and was retconned by X-2. Even within the FF series I think titles like VI, VII and IX were much more bittersweet regarding their endings (and absolutely obliterate X in all other aspects). Lets not Start about games in General. Then we have to consider endings like Silent Hill 2, MGS3, Xenosaga 3, Bioshock Infinite (especially its add ons), Links Awakening, Nier, Drakengard 3, RDR2 etc which wipe the floor with FFXs ending. My opinion.
What a bitter-sweet ending. I just finished the DX Version of the game recently, and this definitely caught me off guard. In the end, Marin seemed to be self-aware that she is a figment if the Wind Fish’s imagination and was accepting of it, and the memory of Koholint will live on Links memory.
I don’t think Marin was reincarnated as a seagull as most people interpret the secret ending as. I believe it shows Link remembering Marin and her wish to become a seagull and fly over the vast ocean. The Wind Fish said that dreams can be reality by using our memories. The secret ending shows that even if Marin doesn’t exist, she will always be in Link’s heart and memories. Thats how I see it as. I think Marin being reincarnated as a seagull would make a lot of things more confusing.
No she WAS reincarnated. Thats why its a hidden ending, and in the DX/regular version, she literally transforms to a seagull or you see her flying with wings in the ending.
At the beach, Marin talks about wishing to be a seagull so she could travel the world and sing to everyone. When you talk to her after beating the 8th dungeon, she mentions making a wish, but cuts herself off before describing the wish, which you pretty much know what it was already. When you beat the game normally, it doesn’t appear that she got her wish, but if you win without deaths, there she is. An image of her as a seagull flies off into the sky. She got her wish. It's a beautiful reward for not dying at all in the game (which is a bit tough without the blue dye)
I played this game originally in 1998, after having played Ocarina Of Time i was almost eleven years old, when i finished the game i cried because all what you did was just a dream, and as a dream it must have an end... And now in my 30's i've listened to this ending mixing orchestrated and the original music and made me cry again, such and adventure, lovely memories of the old times and watching in a little animation wow, speechless... Maybe it's nostalgia, and maybe nostalgia sells a lot, but to me, are my precious memories, and the beautiful times of yesterday.
If you look closely, you’ll see a seagull flying after Marin disappears. If you remember when Marin talked to link, she says that she wants to wish to the great wind fish to become a seagull and fly past the sea to see if there is more past the island. Link woke up with wind fish and saw marin, and then a seagull flys by as if it was her.
The frightening thing people don't get is that the whole thing is Link's NDE -- Near Death Experience. Through the game until the end when the Wind Fish awakens, Link is dying.
Mark Haynes just because it’s old doesn’t mean it can’t be spoiled. There are tons of people who have never played or even heard of this game until the remake. For many people this will even be their first Zelda game. It’s not exactly like the story of Link’s Awakening is on par with “No, I am your father” in Star Wars. It’s not a part of the Zeitgeist in the same way. Sooo... yes the game absolutely can be spoiled.
@@lrc4263 He just said it was "spoiled" a long time ago. He never said it wasn't spoiled at all. Your spiel is next to worthless since you can still figure out who the Final Boss is if you search up Link's Awakening regardless.

Dexuz Yeah to be fair this isn’t a NSMBU to NSMBUD type of deal. This game is pretty old, so they couldn’t exactly... up the resolution and call it a day.
*Link and the Windfish wake up and when Link opens his eyes he is on a carriage and he sees an unfamiliar face where the Windfish was...* Ralof: “Hey you, you’re finally awake...”
Malon and talon were the real world versions of Marin and tarin. Though a different link, he ended up finding his dream girl. The gossip stone, talon's "joke" about wanting link to marry malon and malon and link's interactions and what he likely became when he got a bit older strongly imply they do get together.
Nearing towards the end of the game, I was ready to not finish it so that the island never disappeared and Marin would still live on. But no, I had to move on. Remembering Marin's line asking Link/us the player to not forget her made me scream "no sweetie I will never forget you!!!" And then seeing Marin's smile made me go "nooo I don't deserve your smile!" 😭
Better a waking truth than a sleeping lie. No matter the cost, which only Link could have decided. Marin lives on no matter what and no one can tell me otherwise.
This ending still makes me so sad. By the end of the game I didn't want to completely finish it. Isn't it enough I got rid of all the nightmares? Can't I just let the Wind Fish just continue to rest and let just one single Link find happiness?
I love how the closer you get to beating the game, the more the bosses beg and plead with Link to stop trying to wake the Wind Fish. It's real dark.

26 years later, the adventure ends once again.
I literally cried at the end of this when I played the remake. It brought so much memories. I was 8 years old when this game was released in 1993 and I remember playing this game on the original game boy so many times. I love this game to death. It's my first Zelda game ever and I'll never forget it.
Marin’s fate is both heartwarming and sad. Her home is gone, but now she can spread her song to the world.
This ending made my eyes watery, And give me goosebumps when Link played the Ballad of the wind fish and everything starts to Disappear...

geraldine woods Nah it’s new. The game itself is pretty new, the game that the game is remaking isn’t.
Perhaps the most bittersweet ending of any video game.
I'd rather give that to FFX
@@Devolgalf But Tidus came back to life.
@@Devolgalf FFX is shit compared to this.

Can we just talk about how beautiful the game looks? Like dang it looks like that 3DS zelda game but upgraded
Do you mean a link between worlds?
I didn't expect the scene at the end i legit cried
I like to think... that every Link, across all timelines and spaces, still dreams of a girl that he is reminded of everytime he sees a seagull.
I love how the music at the credits transitions from the new arrangement to the original 8 bit music, and then back to orchestral, then mixed.
The ballad of the wind fish really makes the ending sader along with Marin's vocals, dont know why really.
Kirby: woah this egg is big
Link: we can use Music
Mario: what the hell happening
Waddle dee: the nightmare

I played this game originally in 1998, after having played Ocarina Of Time i was almost eleven years old, when i finished the game i cried because all what you did was just a dream, and as a dream it must have an end... And now in my 30's i've listened to this ending mixing orchestrated and the original music and made me cry again, such and adventure, lovely memories of the old times and watching in a little animation wow, speechless... Maybe it's nostalgia, and maybe nostalgia sells a lot, but to me, are my precious memories, and the beautiful times of yesterday.
Darkness: "You can never defeat us."
*Theif: "YOu cAn neVer DeFeat uS."*
The updated version of Marin's song is so mesmerizing, I can't stop listening to it
i love how they really do a great job on mixing the 8 bit "Credits" with the "Instrumental Ver. Credits." it made me tears up!

It's a remake of a 26 year old game... The ending was "spoiled" long before this.

A Profasiagaming thumbnail that doesn't spoil everything in the game? What timeline are we in?
Well there isn’t any other thumbnail to show that would get views. Like the thumbnail looks interesting-> it’s gonna get clicks. Showing the in game stuff wouldn’t be as effective in stirring interest. The game is also pretty old so there isn’t much he can spoil.

Remembering Marin's line asking Link/us the player to not forget her made me scream "no sweetie I will never forget you!!!"
And then seeing Marin's smile made me go "nooo I don't deserve your smile!" 😭
Better a waking truth than a sleeping lie. No matter the cost, which only Link could have decided. Marin lives on no matter what and no one can tell me otherwise.
What a happy ending, link eradicated an island and everyone on it, and now he's stranded in the middle of the sea.
This ending still makes me so sad. By the end of the game I didn't want to completely finish it. Isn't it enough I got rid of all the nightmares? Can't I just let the Wind Fish just continue to rest and let just one single Link find happiness?
I loved the small bits of 8-bit music there at the end. It really brought back memories of playing it on the gameboy.
