This is the only time in entertainment where the "It was all a dream" trope worked. Oh....and every one of you now share its memory as well. Cherish it.
This game hit me so hard, when I got through it as an adult. I think there's a theme here about allowing yourself to let go, in order to progress in life. Sometimes you have to leave a place that you love, let go of a relationship, move on to another job, even though staying where you are is the easy thing. Because if you don't, you can't grow. You won't change. Things may not get worse, but they also don't get any better. The experience is painful, but ultimately liberating. It's a very real, and very bittersweet lesson that everyone learns at some point.
The only time where "It was all a dream" trope doesn't leave an audience mad or disappointed Nintendo and the LA team really delivered something special!
I can think of a couple other examples. Over the Garden Wall is easily one of the best uses of this trope, and For the Man Who Has Everything is one of the best Superman stories.

Still one of the most heartbreaking games I have played, and the story of Marin and Link has influenced me a lot, so much that our daughter will be called Marin.
Marin is my favorite character. I never knew about her getting her wish. This was really a shock for me. I'm crying so much right now. I'm so happy she got her wish.
Don't let Marin fool you, she didn't wish to be a seagull to sing to people. She wished to be be a seagull so she could steal as many people's chips as possible.
When i first played the game years ago i thought: When the fish wakes up, everybody's soul is free...but its bittersweet. the wind fish reminds me of the whale from skyward sword, is it connected?
I think one of the Leviathan skeletons from Breath of the Wild might be the Wind Fish - all three of them are whale skeletons that are found in unusual locations, after all.
Always noticed that the Zelda games with the weird settings (MM,LA,PH,WW) are the ones that are my favorite. :) This was one of my first Zelda games and I'm soooo thankful for it. Can't wait to play this on the Switch. :D

The Link's Awakening manga, you have to read it! It really explores the characters and their relationships to Link so much that it's good to have some comparison of that with the game's story.
It also hurts even more when you realize how much Marin actually cared for Link in the manga. I swear they loved each other and it broke both their hearts to have to depart forever.
Yeah, I feel kind of bad how Martin is the only one who gets to exist after the island disappears but what if the other seagulls you see before Marin are all other characters on the island? Not sure though.
Arin Jäger I highly doubt it would have alluded to her by saying that seagull line in the beginning and then have her face in the sky and have a seagull fly right after it
@@patrickterryjr4764 see, i wish she had wished to just be real, to " go and find other places, sing for other people" etc, but i guess it is that bittersweet dissatisfaction of a perfect ending that punctuates the "it wa a ll a dream" trope
I mean the Windfish could have at least brought Link back to Hyrule or grant him a wish, it’s not like he just saved it from some dream infesting nightmares or anything 🤷🏻♂️
personally i think link used his wish to give marin (and possibly the islanders) second life as a seagull. and as for taking him back to hyrule i see no other way the oracle games could have taken place since link to the past, awakening, and oracle links are all the same link
This whole theory video misses the quotes from the Owl Statues that give more insight into the whole story. One for example says that if the wind fish sleeps too long, the hero dies. Another one compares sleep to the ocean, and dreams with waves, both end in a crash. Also, this quote would have been kinda essential to describe the Windfish: THE WIND FISH IN NAME ONLY, FOR IT IS NEITHER.
Exactly, Owl statue located at Ancient Ruins says that Link will die if Wind Fish sleeps too long. From this, Link has motivation to get out of the island.
I thought the statue talking about death meant more like he would grow old in the dream and die. Like he could spend his life there (dying irl when he dies in the dream) or wake the wind fish and continue on with his real life. So like I thought it was less about motivating him to continue on with the quest and more of a question about whether its better to live blissfully in a false world or seek the truth even though there'd be no guarantee of happiness.
I also hope Nintendo keeps up the anime aesthetic for zelda games in the future. For example imagine a Majora's Mask remake with all the cut scenes and major interactions told through this beautiful art style. Something to think about I suppose...
Someone on youtube, called Majorlink, has been doing 'remakes' of key scenes in OOT and a few other scenes using more realistic models.. I would go check it out.. it's beautiful...
This has made me think about those “ Leviathan” bones in BoTW differently now. Maybe significant, maybe another Easter egg. Links Awakening was such a one off playing it as a kid but those skulls were whale bones for sure...
Sadly nowadays Japanese storytelling in games tries to keep the theme of achievement and loss but they tend to droen in it various other side plots with their own themes... many of which are only alluded to but never fully explored... because aparently that's what Japanese writers think a side plot should be: unfinished.
Amélie Barrois it's not the end, and actually mm is a very happy ending game. Can't say the same way abou ocarina though. Link lost his childhood, lost all of his friends and the only person who could understand him, forcing him to go in a quest after her, witch we all know from TP how it ends.
I agree. It has a very sad ending. Other sad endings in Zelda games is when Midna cries with emotion, and breaks the Twilight mirror right when she implied heavily that she loves Link. There is also that big quest ending in Majora's Mask where we see Anju and Kafei reunited and send Link away to safety, claiming they 'Will greet the morning... together'. Just like a true love couple. Not a game's end, but still, that part is haunting.
Wooooow.... I just finished the game, and I loved the story. I did not know about the secret ending, but it is beautiful :3 Thanks for the explanation, Zeltik. I'll replay the game with more calm the next time, and look to not die :D
The storm at the very start was likely due to the wind fish being forced to sleep, and have nightmares; after all, that would make sense why there was a volatile storm with the wind fish so nearby. When Levious was infected, the weather reflected his health and mood. It wouldn't be a stretch for this one to work the same way. It's kinda crazy we never got an answer as to who actually forced the wind fish to sleep in the first place (unless one of the Oracle games just happened to answer this, though i doubt it). I can't imagine some scrub moblins being able to do it in. Unless it was something natural however life-threatening parasites infecting it.
@@netweed09 then don't play it m8, it's not that bad, and that's kinda how the game was originally, and how a lot of the series was without the 3ish-D graphical updates.
@@sillybeanthing That's my point; I don't need to, I was privileged enough to play the originals and honestly if they're not going to ever upgrade them to the Breath engine, that's all I'll still ever need from them. I don't think that was Marin's wish. She already told him about the seagull thing, so why would she keep it a secret. I think the wish was more related to Link.
@@SkyLinkTheory Malon. Similar name, both sing, both bond with Link through music...while Link plays the ocarina. Both people and animals--horses in Malon's case--love her voice. Both teach Link an important song that connects them. Tarin and Talon are Mario if he were a layabout on drugs or a drunk running a ranch and deliverer of milk. I don't even know what Tarin is to marin, as she calls him by name.
@@AlvinaYunoa The timeline in reality is hastily thrown together crap. Nintendo never really gave it much thought, and the official timelines were made long after the game was released (which is why BotW tries to do away with it all). However, if you consider that LA was released in 1993, and Ocarina of Time was around 1997, then you can see how it fits. Besides, in an interview around the release of OoT, it was mentioned Malon was deliberately modelled after Marin.
Nice. But there's something about human voiceovers, however well 'executed' that I don't like. I love the ethereal sounds and cryptic mumbles of the Sheika Monks in Breath. I think that's the height of 'voice acting'. If something is meant to be weird I guess, keep humans as far away as possible from it
Very well done. It was like listening to an audio book. The voice acting for the wind fish was a nice touch as well. I enjoyed this very much so thank you!
I love this game so much and this remake is just wonderfully made. When you're inside the egg in the final chamber before you jump down into the final boss room, don't jump yet and listen for a while. I will give you a spoiler here, don't read on if you haven't tried it yourself yet: You can actually hear the wind fish sing. It was one of the beautiful things they have put into this remake. I'm sad to having played through the game. Once again.
Nice video; I quite liked it. The name of the village in Japanese is メーベ (me-be) village, likely meant to be "maybe" slightly obfuscated. Also, Nintendo of America has pronounced it this way and no other way (mayb) in several of their videos as of late.
Even though many people are upset with this ending, it actually brought a smile to my face. It teaches us the epistemology of loss and that to not cling onto something you cannot have. In the end it was all a dream and we helped a deity free from his slumber. Even if we wouldn't awaken him, the whole island would be plagued with monsters. Thankfully the wind god fulfilled her dream!
Samuel Sharman Strong enough to carry Link uphill while he was unconscious, friends with most of the monsters and one of the few who could travel without any issue (and only really went with Link to get a date out of him, really), and soooo trolls Link and everyone else during said-date? Yeah, she’s awesome
I know this game came out on the GameBoy so the developers had little space to work with. But I wish that there were two endings to LA. One where, just the game, Link awakens the wind fish and the island disappears. And one where link doesn't wake it up and the island remains.
I just beat the game earlier today and that whole seagull thing at the end never clicked until I watched this video. Now I'm sad and I can only accept what Zeltik pointed out as canon. [edit] To clarify, I've played the DX version in the past
I've played through and watched the ending of the original countless times since the 1993 release, played the DX version through several times and of course the remake. It's always been a bit sad to me, but Link's face when he sees the Wind Fish and realizes it was all real while he was on the island made it a nice moment.
7:24 The direct translation from the Japanese game is: Legends Of Zelda : Island Seen in Dream or Dream Island Something along those lines. So it was kinda obvious, however I’m glad they changed the name in the english release, it gives more space for players to think on what’s happening. Such an amazing game.
@pinkbeatle2012 This makes an interesting dilemma. If you want, I can tell you about a villian that I made up that I feel could replace Nightmare in this game. Maybe it's better, maybe worse. You decide. 😉
I knew the story and the ending since I was a little child back in the GameBoy era, but watching your video made me cry with a smile like if it was the first time I hear the story. It is simply the way you explain it and how good you do it.
When you find Tarin as a racoon in the mysterious forest. He's clearly have some mushrooms (Amanita muscaria) in his bag. Those mushroom are highly psychoactive. So what is Tarin doing as a "racoon" in the mysterious forest? He's clearly tripping his balls off. Seriously.
Tarin was based on Mario and the racoon he both mentions and was at the start was a reference to the racoon power up he had in super Mario bros 2 on the snes. Also the mushrooms themselves are a reference in itself being called toadstool
I havent been much of a fan of any Zelda game UNLESS it's the '3D' kind like BOTW, OOT ect....but after binging alot of your videos lately I am very keen to hunt down Wind Waker and now also this one! Thankyou for putting in so much time and effort to creating these videos, you have an excellent speaking voice and tell your stories flawlessly. Keep it up! :)
11:15 the wind fish said "THOU MAY" but the voice said "thou might" that's an error And the voice said "come Link" but the text box said "COME, Zeltik". That equals two voicing errors.
Since Marin is the only one who notices that Koholint Island is inescapable, that means she’s not a part of the Wind Fish’s Dream and was also stuck on the island
This is why I love youtube and channels like these. Everyone is special and talented in their own way. Some find it that thye like a certain game so much so they talk about the lore, explain easter eggs, secrets, speculations and dive deep into a games mythology. Imagine all the wasted talent we couldnt see because we didn't have internet.
I wish there was a future game where Marin comes back, maybe a character who can be both a human and seagull. She could make a reference that she grew up on an island that disappeared long ago, before it faded away, she asked the guardian of the island for a wish to be able to leave the island. She was granted the wish to become a seagull where fate would have it that she would reunite with the hero in the green tunic, wielding the sword and shield.
The Link's awakening story is a metaphor for "playing games." Whenever a player clears a "game", he returns from the world of fiction to the real world. However, it is a story as a metaphor with the creator's wish that the existence in the game does not disappear as "nothing" but remains in the player's mind as "something beyond fiction". Is this widely known?
We need more adventures with this Link. Instead of new boy, same name, same looks, same place. There should be a series where it's same boy, new place.
The Salty Dog You realize this boy has more games than anyone, right? Link To The Past, Link’s Awakening, Oracle of Seasons, and Oracle of Ages. I also feel I should include Link Between Worlds because it’s the same era. So that’s 4-5 games.
Still one of my favorite Zelda games. Was the first one I ever played too. Can we just take a moment to appreciate the amazing redo of the Face Shrine song in the Link's Awakening Remake? This being the first dungeon where you really learn the truth about the island. You have to *Face* the reality of what your actions will do and the music reflects it in such a wonderful way. Dark, Dreary and miserable but also somber and peaceful. A choice has to be made...Wake the Wind Fish and shatter the illusion... or stay here and remain asleep in the real world. It's so heart crushing. Before this version of the game The Ballad of the Windfish was actually my favorite Zelda Song. After this remake... the Face Shrine Song took that spot, with the Ballad in second. Also I recognized that version of the Ballad of Windfish, it's one of my most played songs on Amazon :)
If each Zelda game was a season of an anime, then Link's Awakening would be the theatrical movie. Even the Japanese title, "The Island were you see dreams"(夢を見る島), fits the feeling.
This is what makes Link’s Awakening so bittersweet; the twist regarding the island is a curveball. Then again, the Slime Eel boss of Catfish’s Maw kind of drops a hint about the island.
I really feel bad for Link. He can never take a break. Not even in an alternative reality where he's not supposed to be burdened with heroic duties. Anywho, PERFECT production Zeltik! The script, the music, the editing WOW! Just subscribed, and you truly deserve a million more.
Wow, this is why I love The Legend of Zelda games, on the surface the story seems simple but in reality they have so much meaning. On a deeper level the stories are very rich. Perhaps this is one of my favorite stories of all time in a video game.
I like how they made the timeline official and canon, and even set it up in some games (Skyward Sword for the reincarnation cycle and the true origin of the Master Sword) and referencing it in others. I love it when fan theories/ideas/trying to make a meta is incorporated by the creators and made legit canon.
This is the only game I've ever played that I was hesitant to beat because I knew the ending was gonna be heartbreaking. The enemies kept giving hints about what would happen if the final boss is beaten and when I saw what was written in one of the temples, I knew the ending was gonna be so sad.
Watching all of your Zelda lore videos has made me realize just HOW MUCH Hidetaka Miyazaki was insipired by Zelda when he created the Souls series. The storytelling of the Dark Souls games has such a huge focus on cycles of civilization, the concept of reincarnation, and indirect storytelling thru visual and audial cues - just like the Zelda games. Your videos have showed me just how interconnected all the Zelda games are to each other - much like how each Souls game (including Bloodborne) is connected to the others. I'm gonna have to replay a lot of Zelda games..
The story of this game is truly great. I remember when I beat the game, the ending made me sad but it is, without a doubt, one of the greatest Zelda games ever made.
While playing this Zelda, I was thinking also that this is the style they should have used to make Pokemon let's go Pikachu/Eve, and probably Shield/Sword.

If you investigate deeply, you will find out why Marin couldn't get off the island by returning as a hylian, rather than a seagull...

This is the only time in entertainment where the "It was all a dream" trope worked.
Oh....and every one of you now share its memory as well. Cherish it.
It's definitely not the only time. Over the Garden Wall is fantastic, and for For the Man Who Has Everything is one of the best Superman stories.
Happened to me far too many times. Bittersweet bittersweet...but it does help you grow.
I already know all of this, but I like to have it re-told to me in a calm, soothing manner 😄😊
Stop making excuses.

a bit late, but it was never an ass pull like mario "2"

The Link's Awakening manga, you have to read it! It really explores the characters and their relationships to Link so much that it's good to have some comparison of that with the game's story.
It also hurts even more when you realize how much Marin actually cared for Link in the manga. I swear they loved each other and it broke both their hearts to have to depart forever.

True. I wonder how he got back. Swam? I always wondered (it might have been answered) where Link was sailing and what exactly he was doing
I think the Wind Fish gave him a lift.
Maybe a ship that was passing by stopped to rescue him
If Link requested any wish he would totally keep Marin and the island, just removing the Wind Fish problem.
This whole theory video misses the quotes from the Owl Statues that give more insight into the whole story.
One for example says that if the wind fish sleeps too long, the hero dies. Another one compares sleep to the ocean, and dreams with waves, both end in a crash.
Also, this quote would have been kinda essential to describe the Windfish:
THE WIND FISH IN NAME ONLY, FOR IT IS NEITHER.
Fleeks Fleeksfleeks *Sky Whale
Exactly, Owl statue located at Ancient Ruins says that Link will die if Wind Fish sleeps too long. From this, Link has motivation to get out of the island.
I thought the statue talking about death meant more like he would grow old in the dream and die. Like he could spend his life there (dying irl when he dies in the dream) or wake the wind fish and continue on with his real life. So like I thought it was less about motivating him to continue on with the quest and more of a question about whether its better to live blissfully in a false world or seek the truth even though there'd be no guarantee of happiness.
Perfect timing.

This game's story is very Japanese. Bittersweet.
Preston K. Productions all asian story’s are. 🙈 look one of real life Asian soap.. it’s so bittersweet and u getting upset.. a lot 😂
Sadly nowadays Japanese storytelling in games tries to keep the theme of achievement and loss but they tend to droen in it various other side plots with their own themes... many of which are only alluded to but never fully explored... because aparently that's what Japanese writers think a side plot should be: unfinished.

This probably has the saddest ending in zelda
I still cant stop crying
MM ending is very sad too, if Link doesn't make it before the 3rd day ends...
In additional to the comments by everyone else here, the speech by Fi at the end of Skyword Sword is sad.
This is one of my favourite games. And it was so nice reliving this story. Thank you. Great video

I wonder if the Wind Fish enjoys pumpkin soup.
You know me the singing girl Marin, and we're at Koholint Island
Are you ready?

11:15 the wind fish said "THOU MAY" but the voice said "thou might" that's an error
And the voice said "come Link" but the text box said "COME, Zeltik". That equals two voicing errors.
Since Marin is the only one who notices that Koholint Island is inescapable, that means she’s not a part of the Wind Fish’s Dream and was also stuck on the island
This is like watching a Foundflix vid but with Zelda instead of a horror movie.
I love this game art style so much.
I’m shook, marin 4 real tyrned into a damn seagull.
I don’t think he explained much more than already obvious in this video but it really does summarise and wrap up the game nicely
Link after waking up the windfish “ Ight imma head out”
The Link's awakening story is a metaphor for "playing games." Whenever a player clears a "game", he returns from the world of fiction to the real world.
"there should be a series where it's same boy, new place"
i know it's not the same Link as this one but OOT and MM would like to speak with you.
The Dreaming Island (yume o mira shima)
This is what makes Link’s Awakening so bittersweet; the twist regarding the island is a curveball. Then again, the Slime Eel boss of Catfish’s Maw kind of drops a hint about the island.
I just finished the game and MAN was it a treat
I really feel bad for Link. He can never take a break. Not even in an alternative reality where he's not supposed to be burdened with heroic duties.
