Despite the death and destruction Skull Kid had wrought upon the world under the mask's influence, and despite Skull Kid hating the giants for abandoning him, they still loved their little old friend. They knew he was possessed by Majora's Mask, and they implored you to spare his life and try to save him from the mask. Another hard-hitting one for me was the little girl in the music box house who was desperately trying to keep her father locked in a cupboard of full of talismans. He'd succumbed to the gibdos curse and was turning, all while their home was surrounded by undead creatures seeking to claim him. When you reactivate the magic song then break his curse, the girl runs to her father and embraces him. Dazed and confused, the father asks his child what had happened. The girl assures him it was just a bad dream, likely something he had said to comfort her in the nights they spent together in that little research station in those haunted lands. Then you realize, this child, no older than 9, was forced to keep herself and her dying father alive for God knows how long, surrounded by monsters banging at her door, in a wasteland where no one was coming to save her, with access to countless tomes of arcane research that could probably save his life, but each far beyond her level of understanding. All she knew was the talismans. It was like a child trying to apply band-aids as she watched her only living parent bleed out from a deadly wound.

Ah, let's put him in the closet, and we'll let the the players know that's what happened because if they approach him, she'll imply she's trying to keep him in there."
Ganon is a giant boar with magic, who's origins we know clearly. Majora is a powerful eldritch horror which can consume even the best of people who's only desire is chaos, and we have no clue where it came from. So yeah, Majora is scarier than Ganon
Hacky Zach majora is a cursed soul that can destroy a planet and move a moon while Ganon is a being of pure demise that is cursed to bring destruction to hyrule,They’re both pretty much the same but one curse is on a mask and the other is on hyrule. On top of that majors is stronger than ganon, majora might as well be a stronger ganon curse that’s easier to break.
@@hackyzach3697 You could argue Majora can reincarnate endlessly as long as the mask doesn't break, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it does at the end of Majora's Mask
What makes this even better is hearing the Happy Mask Sales man talking in a normal voice in the begining, getting more and more anxious, then at the end laughing out of pure insanity as his mind falls into chaos along with all of Termina.
2:58. Skull Kid looks terrified. This actually does a really good job in showing how he wasn’t the antagonist, he was just another victim of Majora. God I hope we get an HD remake one day.
@@NathanWoyessa I've played it and while it's not bad, it does take away some of the good elements from the original. The darker color of the world being gone, Zora swimming costing magic to use, and ice arrows being very limited just to name a few. Edit: Deku bouncing is also very slow.
Nintendo is working with Illumination, the people that brought us Minions and Despicable Me, to make a Mario movie coming out in the next year or so. If it succeeds, they plan on unleashing a string of franchise movies. Majora's Mask being one of them, it's rumored to be aimed towards older teens and young adults because they don't want to hold back.
If Nintendo was smart, they'd hire you guys to work for them...but instead they'll probably flag this for copyright. Amazing job man. Zelda > Everything
3:16 This added so much to the short, the fact that it showed the fear in skull kid's eyes, as he was completely defenseless against the mask's control, that part really gives me chills.
This is what you can do with modern technology. Movie studios cut corners and go as fast as possible so they can make money as soon as possible Fan works have love and time
If Nintendo gave you a full budget, a team of animators, and a few tweaks, this could be a full amazing movie. I’d love to see this become a real thing.
Same here! Honestly, I kinda wish they'd taken lead with this video and started out with a Happy Mask Salesman movie where he acquires the mask or something.
But you can also see that Skull Kid doesn't want to put on the Mask. His facial expression is proof he was scared but sadly the Mask is too powerful for him to resist.
The whole bloody game is. One of the best times of my childhood. Heh... back then, games like this were rated 12. Look at the garbage they give us now.
Oh, wow! I hadn't even noticed that - what a great, subtle reference! And now I realize the crackling sound and Skull Kid's pose are also similar to the original transformation scenes as well!
For an unofficial animation, this is so masterfully well done it’s scary. You could use this as a movie trailer and I’d have a very hard time believing it wasn’t even made by Nintendo or any major film producer.
first time watched it, I -for some reason- thought it is a trailer for a movie, the movie. I told everyone about it, then was left with a void in my heart looking for the world 'trailer" in the title.
Rich Mendoza The Ocarina Of Time Majora’s Mask The Wind Waker Twilight Princess Skyward Sword Breath Of The Wild Need to be SERIES I REPEAT SERIES Movies don’t have time to properly flesh or characters and storylines, most video games clock in at about whole days long, in order to turn that into a movie they would have to remove some of the best parts of a game that are important to the story and adventure So everyone who wants a video games movie, think twice about how horribly they would ruin for you
The pain the skull kid goes through while wearing the mask, Links feel it every time you play the game and swap a different mask. That makes him the strongest hero.
Links pain that he goes through with his masks are less painfull than skull kids majoras mask. Majora is more powerfull than all the other masks which increases the pain factor.
Majora’s Mask is ranked to be the 5th most disturbing game title ever created, and this video amplifies the amount of terror that game provides tenfold. Truly a masterpiece of horror.
Not ever, and not out of all games on the market. At least I can’t find any evidence of it. It’s the scariest/most disturbing Zelda game in the franchise but I can think of plenty of those games that top this. Outlast?
Hollywood made a good start in this direction with "Rango", now they only have to make the movie at least rated T-worthy and get the rights. (I mean, imagine a child friendly Majora's mask movie, that's just wrong)
I like the subtlety in this version of the story. The Mask is a lot like The One Ring, it wants to be found and to be used, it wants to control someone. It tries to control the Happy Mask Salesman and you can see he's tempted but he resits, and so it knocks him out at exactly the right time to be found by Skull Kid.
Adding to the subtlety, it would be easy to have the mask look dynamic, powerful. However, other than the eyes flaring exactly once, the mask is completely inert. The way it's framed still makes it look incredibly dynamic and sinister, despite not actually doing anything.
3:10 I like to think that what the mask salesman is seeing here is what's actually happening in reality, maybe not so much with the fire, but those tendrils are real and they are hypnotizing skull kid, making his reality seem like he's just simply placing it on his face
Those tendrils exist in its boss fight. Even though i was technically old enough to connect the implications, it didn't click at the time. This animation just kinda snapped the implication into focus and its horrifying. But it does match the change in skull kid's behavior over the game's 3 days. That he was getting taken over. Through the telescope you can view him on the tower and how he behaves from day 1, 2, 3, and the final hours. At the time i thought my game bugged sometimes and never realized his behavior was based on the day i viewed him through the telescope. First day he's still playful. Second day that playfulness is gone, instead his head is twitching as he stares at you. Third day there is no longer any twitching. He just stands there and stares at you, into your soul. Waiting. In the final hours, he floats above the tower, arms raised at the sky. Hastening the moon's decent. Accepting and embracing the coming death and destruction of a world he despises.
lol I thought I was the only one to notice, and yes is an excellent detail knowing the fact that we never knew what happened after Skull Kid took the cursed mask.... A CURSED AF MASK! (Judging by that "torture" scene...)
I’m going to sit here and pretend not to be disturbed by how the agony of Skull Kid putting on Majora’s Mask is a perfect mirror for / *pretty much exactly what happens when Link puts on transformation masks.* If that was intentional, damn 👏
J. Han I think Fierce Deity Link might just be a previous Link(Maybe a Link we’ve never seen), since belonged Majora was in Hyrule, not Termina. It could set up for a prequel for Majoras Mask or Oot.
Hollywood should take notes here. Not only is this visually stunning...this just goes to show what sticking to source material can do for movie adaptations...obviously we don't need live action movies of games...especially the zelda series...everything about this is a masterpiece...the CGI blends so well with realism yet retains the quirkiness of the franchise.
This would be an incredible cold open to a movie for its excellent storytelling for both fans and newcomers alike. You get a feel for the world this takes place in, the type of character Skullkid is, and it teases the dark power of Majora's Mask. THAT'S how you get people hooked, and excited for the movie that's about to follow.
Isn't Skull Kid first playful and mischievous, even after putting on the mask, before succumbing to Majora's influence? So much for sticking to the source material. I guess it was easier to animate it that way, which only goes to show there will always be some concessions.
Wishfully thinking that when Nintendo says they're making a live action Zelda movie, they actually mean "live action" like the Lion King remake, and it can actually look more like this short film.
It makes sense that the creators of an animation as incredible as this would go on to make Kena and the Bridge of Spirits, a game equally as incredible
They probably will since these guys might get mad bank from this. And if that happens then we finally show Nintendo that we are tired of them shoving around their own fans who just love their games. Nintendo has been on a bit of a losing streak lately sadly, hopefully the Switch is awesome.
Wtf? In what world should you be allowed to make money off of someone else's intellectual properties? Now if they werent monetizing the video and it got taken down THEN that would be messed up
This is still the single best piece of fan animation to ever exist. Congrats not only to your team, but also the IP of Majora's Mask itself. Few fandoms get this sort of monumental present. Also, this is obviously visually breathtaking but holy gods damned shit that sound design is some of the best I've ever heard. Every decision made there is crystal clear in intent.
This is so incredible, the animation quality is miles better than a lot of recent movies I've seen! I REALLY hope Nintendo sees this and decides to do something very similar with their IPs! GREAT job to everyone who was involved in making this. I wish you all success!
+OmegaAlphaWarrior M The Same company that took down the amazing Pokemon Uranium and AM2R? Also they also have their own team of animators and keeps their IPs to themselves. Nintendo is going to be pissed instead of impressed.
+Monstrozoid Nintendo wouldn't copyright strike a video like this. It's usually RUclips's fucked up algorithm that causes that to happen. Nintendo usually only does copyright claims (which is much less serious than a strike) and they mainly do it for videos that have unaltered gameplay of their games without their permission. Which isn't much different from what a lot of other companies do, Nintendo just gets the most attention for it since the media is heavily biased against them. Please do some research before you say outlandish bullcrap.
I wish I could watch this over and over again for the first time :) To be honest; this might be the best thing I have seen in a couple of years. A masterpiece!
I honestly did not realise that animation quality was at this level yet :O Now Nintendo knows exactly who to hire for their Zelda movie, if (or hopefully, WHEN) they decide to make one. Best Zelda fan movie I have ever seen!
you really think they would? Their console specs are so weak, compare to ps4 and xbox one, they can barley run pocket edition Minecraft on the wii u, they are basically the Apple Inc when it comes to consoles, very expensive, low spec.
The art is great but the actual animation could use some work. Specifically the faries need some work. They seem slow or something. Not like in the game. The skull kid's cartwheel didn't look real either. Which is fine because it's still a great video but it's not the same quality that they would want for a full length feature sinking millions and millions of dollars into.
Hooooly moly, this is AMAZING! I love the cinematography going on in here. The music is phenomenal, the environmental detail is superb, and Skullkid and HMS's designs are perfect! I REALLY WISH THERE WAS MORE!! Nintendo should grab everyone involved with this and hire them to make a full-scale movie, cause this is the most faithful justice Majora's Mask has ever gotten.
Heck they can just make a deal with cinemas to have this run before a movie starts or something. Like god damn this short clip just gets you in the mood to watch something.
I feel like during the night scene when the Mask Salesman is staring into the Mask, it's trying to already control him but he himself is trying to resist... hence why he falls over and his eyes roll up. When he writhes on the ground the mask is trying to get him to reach out with little to no success.... but then Skull Kid picks it up, and being a child his will is much less powerful than the Salesmen.
Do you know what's the best thing about this? It actually depicts Majora's Mask. The entire story is literally shown in here, from the happiness of the Skull Kid having fun with the fairies to the moment the mask changed him. I still remember Tael saying "The Skull Kid was never like this. We used to be friends!" And now this just shows what happened. I can feel goosebumps on my arms...
like please can we just have this film, Nintendo be making a Mario movie, when we could be having this masterpiece on screen, like this would be fantastic!, a film worth my money!!!, every popcorn kernel I choke on!!!.
Play Kena: Bridge of Spirits, the game they made, it is as close to this being made a real actual movie you will ever get as it's made by the same people and it is absolutely amazing.
Majoras Mask, one the more depressing of the games in the franchise would actually make for an amazing film. Or at least something like this but longer. I would do anything to watch this if it ever were to happen.
I'm a little skeptical, nearly every movie adaptation of a video game I have seen were horrible for one primary reason. You're taking a personal, first, second, or third person perspective, and attempting to transform it into an omnipresent one and expect to achieve the same impact the game did. Moreover, there are a few complexities to this game (such as the reversal of time to progress plot) that would be a major turnoff for the average consumer (AKA the average idiot)
Dude, I always knew that Majora was just controlling Skull Kid, but just looking at the sheer terror in his face when he put in on really changed my entire perspective...
I love Majora's Mask actually growls when the Skull Kid puts it on and then struggles to try and take it off. It's as if the mask is trying to cover up the imp's screams by growling while it tries to possess the Skull Kid.
3:12 that chorus gives me chills every time I listen to it … not only does this video have phenomenal animation , but the amazing background music really completes it :D I could legit gush about how good this is for days !
@Papiros Well, considering i first discovered this video on a playlist on nintendos offical youtube channel, I dont think they are gonna take it down anytime soon.
Lmao hey you’re the dude that did the world wide choppers cover with Patrick. Random af seeing you pop up like 10 years later in some comments. You killed it, keep rapping.
Acromat /ak-roh-mat/ agreed. I'be been looking for something like this for years. I hope they continue with the same voice actors and art direction. Too epic!
This games I can say saved me from suicide when I was younger, and seeing the love and passion of the animation and seeing another who the game changed fills me with joy.
Zelda games wouldn't really work as movies. This works really well because it's based on an actual cutscene in Majora's Mask, thus not needing to alter nonstorybaded gameplay gimmicks and animations into a video.
Lolster you could get it to work just because you lose the gameplay element doesn't mean you'll lose the story or design. Make it episodic based on various quests. Even if you make it a full length feature it can still work as long as it still feels like your watching a game. We watch let's plays with no issue. The difference here is the story and visual design now have to do the heavy lifting now to make up for a lack of a RUclips personality or a controller in your hand and legend of Zelda has no shortage of story telling and they clearly have the visual design down pat
With the announcement of the upcoming movie, I can't help but return to this masterpiece. I absolutely love how well the happy mask salesman is translated into a semi-realistic style that fits naturally into a live action setting whilst still keeping the charm of his design from the games. I feel like a lot of that charm will be lost with a live-action cast, as it seems the movie is going to have. If I'm being honest here, using live-action to portray characters from the legend of zelda feels weird. I just don't think it'll translate as well, and I would much rather the movie took an approach similar to this short. All well, I can't have everything I want, and despite my gripes with the decision to make the movie fully live action, I hope my fears ate proven wrong and I hope the movie will be as amazing as this short. Although they're gonna have a hard time getting there, nothing is technically perfect, but this short is about as close as you can get.
Now I want to see a Majora's Mask movie.

Ah, let's put him in the closet, and we'll let the the players know that's what happened because if they approach him, she'll imply she's trying to keep him in there."
3 years and counting.

7 years later and this is still one of the best animations I've ever seen. I wish it could become reality.
They're making a Zelda live-action now in case you didn't know. I really wanted it to be animated instead, but we can pray
This makes majora seem scarier than ganon
He is though
Ganon is a giant boar with magic, who's origins we know clearly. Majora is a powerful eldritch horror which can consume even the best of people who's only desire is chaos, and we have no clue where it came from. So yeah, Majora is scarier than Ganon
Only thing Ganon has on Majora is the constant reincarnation
Hacky Zach majora is a cursed soul that can destroy a planet and move a moon while Ganon is a being of pure demise that is cursed to bring destruction to hyrule,They’re both pretty much the same but one curse is on a mask and the other is on hyrule. On top of that majors is stronger than ganon, majora might as well be a stronger ganon curse that’s easier to break.
@@hackyzach3697 You could argue Majora can reincarnate endlessly as long as the mask doesn't break, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it does at the end of Majora's Mask
This shows that skull kid is the victim to majora too. Just an innocent, reckless child. He met with a terrible fate, didn't he?
I mean skull kids are pretty tragic to begin with.
They are children that get lost in the kokiri forest, and eventually get turned into stalfos
Clearly.
In the game, at the end, the Skull Kid was freed and he and the fairies enjoyed the carnival after the Mask had been defeated.
Kinda like Gollum from LotR.

What makes this even better is hearing the Happy Mask Sales man talking in a normal voice in the begining, getting more and more anxious, then at the end laughing out of pure insanity as his mind falls into chaos along with all of Termina.
Goosebumps on my arms and chills up my spine
You can practically feel the big Miyamoto grin forming on his face as he laughs.

Why does it look like it`s animated in 2040
Because its a cg animation
No dip, Sherlock
This is what you can do with modern technology. Movie studios cut corners and go as fast as possible so they can make money as soon as possible
Fan works have love and time
Cuz it was made in 2040 B)
Because it's not all CG. The environments are real places they filmed and then added the CG characters into.

So everyone who wants a video games movie, think twice about how horribly they would ruin for you
The pain the skull kid goes through while wearing the mask, Links feel it every time you play the game and swap a different mask.
That makes him the strongest hero.
When playing the remake I actually always skipped the transformation cutscene whenever he puts one on, because I felt sorry for him ._.
Links pain that he goes through with his masks are less painfull than skull kids majoras mask. Majora is more powerfull than all the other masks which increases the pain factor.
Basically link ré lives the past memories of each mask when he wears them even the death moments, that's why he cries in pain and agony.

@Jeans yes have a 72 hour movie like the game and watch it all the 3 days that would be hype
@Jeans I mean look at avengers endgame that had a lot of time traveling and back to the future i think itll do fine
@Jeans the tighter time frame likely would help this if it was a movie
Video games made into movies?! I'm in heaven!
@Jeans
Fair point but animation-wise and cinematography-wise this is amazing
I like the subtlety in this version of the story. The Mask is a lot like The One Ring, it wants to be found and to be used, it wants to control someone. It tries to control the Happy Mask Salesman and you can see he's tempted but he resits, and so it knocks him out at exactly the right time to be found by Skull Kid.
Adding to the subtlety, it would be easy to have the mask look dynamic, powerful. However, other than the eyes flaring exactly once, the mask is completely inert. The way it's framed still makes it look incredibly dynamic and sinister, despite not actually doing anything.
Pretty sure the salesman didn't resist it. It looks like the mask knew that skullkid was near and wanted to take him instead of the salesman.
"The mask is precious to me, but I bear it with a great cost."
I'm completely in love with this idea-
_I so badly wish we could've had a film_
Anyways, now- *Time to watch this over and over again! 😃*
It's really not subtle at all LMFAO

The laughter literally sent shivers down my back
4:18

I like to think that what the mask salesman is seeing here is what's actually happening in reality, maybe not so much with the fire, but those tendrils are real and they are hypnotizing skull kid, making his reality seem like he's just simply placing it on his face
the fleshy tendrils are what dig into his face and secure the mask to the host, hence the screaming.
I love when he puts on the mask and does the same scream and pose as link putting on transformation masks. Really nice touch.
Also the intro that uses the same camera movement as the Mask Salesman's story in the game.
I noticed that too, and loved it.
You could say that 'mint' budum check.
lol I thought I was the only one to notice, and yes is an excellent detail knowing the fact that we never knew what happened after Skull Kid took the cursed mask.... A CURSED AF MASK! (Judging by that "torture" scene...)
I’m going to sit here and pretend not to be disturbed by how the agony of Skull Kid putting on Majora’s Mask is a perfect mirror for / *pretty much exactly what happens when Link puts on transformation masks.*
If that was intentional, damn 👏
I never thought of that...now it is pretty disturbing
What is worse is that link could control himself when wearing a mask. Skull kid got taken over.
@@chaoticgoodcreations947 because they weren't manipulative trickster spirits
Stefan Fyhn but I think the Fierce Deity controls Link.
Majora's Mask live action movie! Please make one!

Nintendo wouldn't copyright strike a video like this. It's usually RUclips's fucked up algorithm that causes that to happen. Nintendo usually only does copyright claims (which is much less serious than a strike) and they mainly do it for videos that have unaltered gameplay of their games without their permission. The art is great but the actual animation could use some work. Specifically the faries need some work. They seem slow or something. Not like in the game.
It was kinda obvious in the game that he was being controlled.
MetroidSigma yeah, but I always assumed in the game that he put the mask on at least of his own will
Majoras Mask is the last boss.... not skull kid.
Technically he did steal it here. It's not like he asked the Salesman for the mask. He just took it from the ground.

BotW takes place after it lost all its power, so at that point it IS just a mask.
i thought in botw it was probably just a replica made to look like it
@@AnnoyingMystery no that is the mask he somehow dropped it again lmao but it doesn't take control but have a hypnotizing way to monsters
At the end of Majora’s Mask the salesman says the Mask lost it’s power.
@@Zeywerks when?
How can you make happy mask salesman look so appealing/friendly?? He has been in my nightmares more times than school.
Even now, 7 years later, this video is still the most upscaled "movie" type scene you can watch on youtube for majora's mask. It's quite insane.
Right!
Nintendo really should hire you to make this a full-length feature film.
They have a game coming out on the 5 :)
@@cameronwenban3369 they what?
@@extra_alexandra3816 watch their newest video. It’s a new game coming out on the PlayStation 5.
I would pay to watch it
It’s been a while ( like a year or two ) and it's still amazing
yep Epic
I'm back to watch it again.
Maybe if the new Mario movie succeeds we can get something like this next. Here's hoping. ^_^
IKR?!?!?!?!?
They better make a legend of Zelda movie and if they add skull kid it better look like this
I know
I love Majora's Mask actually growls when the Skull Kid puts it on and then struggles to try and take it off. It's as if the mask is trying to cover up the imp's screams by growling while it tries to possess the Skull Kid.
3:12 that chorus gives me chills every time I listen to it … not only does this video have phenomenal animation , but the amazing background music really completes it :D
I could legit gush about how good this is for days !
This is exactly how i would want a zelda movie too look/feel
I hope not because this looks so normal and childish like something made by disney, and I wouldn’t want that for majoras mask

Are you being sarcastic?
@@ruddyCCIX dunno I literally forgot I even commented that
When I first watched this, I thought it was an official trailer for Majora's Mask.
Same but sadly NINTENDO HASN'T MAD IT A MOVIE AND THEY NEED TO NOW
THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT SHOULD BE MAKING A ZELDA MOVIE. SOMEONE CALL NINTENDO AND HOOK THEM UP WITH THESE GUYS!
FBI: *Already on it*
@Papiros Well, considering i first discovered this video on a playlist on nintendos offical youtube channel, I dont think they are gonna take it down anytime soon.
@Papiros How? What does this have to do with the fanbase being toxic?
7 years later and still waiting patiently for a full movie or series 🙂↕️
I KNEW IT WAS YALL can’t wait to play the new game!
What game? What are you taking about?
@@joey2765 Kena
This is not a game, is a film
@@Ayelaeonao He's not referring to this film. It was revealed during the PS5 showcase event that a game from EmberLabs was shown called Kena.
Lmao hey you’re the dude that did the world wide choppers cover with Patrick. Random af seeing you pop up like 10 years later in some comments. You killed it, keep rapping.
I am COMPLETELY speechless. Majora's Mask means so much to me that it changed my life, so this short is a bloody masterpiece in my book!
same here!
Acromat /ak-roh-mat/ agreed. I'be been looking for something like this for years. I hope they continue with the same voice actors and art direction. Too epic!
couldnt have said it any better
This games I can say saved me from suicide when I was younger, and seeing the love and passion of the animation and seeing another who the game changed fills me with joy.
Imagine how the creator of a game must feel to see it touch so many lives.
Majora's Mask was, and is, a truly special game.
3:54 I just realized that this is a reference to how when link puts on a mask in the game and goes through his transformation
Oh yeah
Oh yeah yeah
Oh yeah yeah yeah

Yeah
A Zelda movie would be so much better animated. Not excited for the live action… but this would be cool I’d it were real
Came back to watch this and try to soothe the sting of what could have been.
This deserves more views. 4 million is a lot, but a masterpiece like this needs more
Whats sad is that despacito has more views than this
How about 5 million!
This should start the nintendo cinematic universe
br0
YES!
Detective Pikachu did that
NCU bro
First we have detective pikachu, maybe a mario movie next, then zelda, with metroid maybe coming later with a kirby movie after
bro this needs to get adapted to full-length film. I would pay to see this in theaters.
Zelda games wouldn't really work as movies. This works really well because it's based on an actual cutscene in Majora's Mask, thus not needing to alter nonstorybaded gameplay gimmicks and animations into a video.
you have to pay to get in the theater
The Great Pumpkin same
Lolster you could get it to work just because you lose the gameplay element doesn't mean you'll lose the story or design.
Jade Rodriguez thank you
With the announcement of the upcoming movie, I can't help but return to this masterpiece.
