  • How do I get my old gameport joystick working on my Windows 10 PC? If you're looking to install and calibrate your old PC joystick on a new version of Windows, this should help.
    After reviewing all those old gameport PC joysticks, I wanted to use my old joystick with my Windows 10 PC. I wanted to play old games (GOG, Steam etc) with an old stick, but under a new version of Windows.
    The Rockfire gameport to USB adapter isn't the only gameport to USB adapter out there (There is always the dependable Mayflash series of adapters), but I've found nothing but success converting my old 15-pin gameport PC joysticks into fully-functional USB Windows 10 joysticks. By setting up the Rockfire accordingly, I've been happily playing old DOSBOX games, old Windows games and my retro game library from both GOG and Steam. Considering the fact that a good modern USB Windows 10 compatible joystick would set me back around £50 or more, installing an old gameport joystick on a new machine is a cost-saving exercise, as well as a bit of retro fun.
    All of my retro PC joysticks were cheap as chips. You can pick up a gameport joystick for less than a tenner (most of mine were around £5), and a Rockfire gameport to USB adapter for about £15. Most people think that an old gameport joystick won't be compatible with their Windows 7, 8 or Windows 10 PC, so they end up being sold off cheap. You can take advantage of that - or stop yourself binning your old joystick!
    Installing and calibrating an old PC joystick on a new Windows PC is a doddle with the Rockfire. The joystick installs under standard WIndows drivers and the usual joy.cpl joystick calibration works perfectly still in Windows 10. Dust off your old gameport PC joystick and get it working with new versions of Windows today!

      Me too :) works like a charm. Played hundreds of hours flying the jet and heli on Battlefield 2 with my 1986 thrustmaster Top Gun untill Gamespy was taken down and the game lost its multiplayer mode. Now the game has been revived (battlelog.co/) and the stick works again, was so great to be able to fly again with my good old stick. Thx again and keep up the good work!

    Hi there!
    I have a wingman like the one you show at 1:18 and the adapter you suggest...
    It works fine but the crosshair is NEVER in the center...
    Even if I breathe it moves everywhere, I think I'd need to increase the deadzone...
    How can I do that?
    Thanks!

      I have heard of people getting the Genius F-16 working, so it's hopefully a hop, skip and a jump to the F-31. You might lose a few buttons, but Mode 1 or 2 seems like it would suit this stick.

    I have the Gravis blackhawk pictured @1:41. Can you elaborate on what you mean by it works but "far from perfect"? This joystick was amazing when it was used for flight games and X-wing on a windows 98 computer which recently bit the dust after 25 years. Now, on windows 7 I can't get it to show up with a belkin adapter and any USB drivers I have found.

    I have a few of these lying around somewhere, the quality on some of them are insane. What joystick do you recommend as the best? And how does the joysticks through the USB adapter work on more modern games?

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  8 лет назад +2

      As for which one I'd recommend, I lined these six sticks up not too long ago - ruclips.net/video/HE7T-JzjxJs/видео.html - The Saitek Cyborg is far and away the best stick of the lot. The joysticks are fully compatible with Windows; they will work flawlessly with any and all modern games. I am just having a blast with old games :-)

    Years ago i bought a super joy box7 gameport to usb adapter, and it never really worked for the firebird2 no matter what setting it was on.

The adapter came with the controller in the usb starter kit I bought in 2000. in the manual included with the set it says that if it is not working to try the usb hub that is included (I have this) and to install the drivers for that (have this too) except the problem is that the drivers are on a floppy disk so I have no idea how to install them and if I do install them I dont even know if it will work. MS Sidewinder FFB Wheel USB Version 1.0 works directly with Win10 64 for me with all inputs responding and force feedback working, also shows up with name and everything in said joy.cpl.
      Even Horizon 4 after some in game key mapping, the only issues seems that is has some polling problem between USB and GPU, which stalls GPU usage at 25% if connected, so its sadly unplayable.

      The 3D Pro Plus is such a difficult stick to get working. I had trouble with my 3D Pro on my Win98 machine; essentially the sticks were horrible with future-proofing, and don't work with CPUs >66mhz FSB. How are you with a soldering iron? There is a solution, but it's difficult: www.descentbb.net/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=19061

      Wheey! UK represent :-) The problem with the F-15E is the PS/2 keyboard throughput, or the slightly unconventional 2-hat design. It's a 2-axis, 4-buttons and 2-hat stick, but could work on the Mode 1 setting. It may even work with the throttle in this mode.

      @@MattyStoked , you know, I think I have a dodgy Nest. I cracked open the stick and it is pure analog - a couple of directly wired 100k pots for X-Y. They are definitely working according to my multimeter. I reckon it should work on setting 1 of the Nest but the calibration app in Windows 10 doesn't register anything. Strangely enough though, it does register the buttons :-(

    Hello, My name is John. So, I have a Rockfire 15 pin game adapter just as show on your video that I just purchased recently in 2023 online to go with my old Microsoft sidewinder joystick that has three wheels on each side of the joystick. I am utilizing a dell laptop with Windows 10. I plug the rockfire into a usb slot, system recognizes joystick in the system, after going to joy.cpl the setting shows the joy and I start moving the joystick and wheels, buttons to test everything, shows everything seems already calibrated. My dumb question now. How do I actually utilize the joystick to play games like online, or on my system. Because I can't seem actually use it. Like Window 10 does not recognize it? I tried switching different modes too, If I am doing so correctly. Thanks.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  Год назад

      If it's coming up in joy.cpl then your system is recognising it. Have you tried using any games? I don't think it will be recognised as an XInput controller, so I doubt more modern games would detect it.

    Hi there, I have a Microsoft Sidewinder 3D Pro, but I have a different adapter. It doesn't have any modes. My computer cannot detect the joystick at all

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  7 лет назад

      +Ryan Bayuk The adapter you have is a native "passthrough" unit. Delivering the analogue signal over USB. Your PC won't detect it because modern OSs expect a digital signal. Hence the analogue to digital converter.

    Just got the Rockfire RM-203 from Amazon and I think I got a dud. Tried plugging in the adapter into my laptop and desktop which both run Windows 7 Pro 64bit and get nothing. Shouldn't Windows (at the vert least) recognize that I plugged something into the USB port? No noise, no changes in Control panel, no indication of life anywhere. HELP!,,,,,,

    • @MattyStoked

      Is the joystick plugged into the Rockfire? It won't recognise the device by itself.

    Hello and thanks for the explanation, but my Saitek 3D digital stick does not work on Windows 10-64bits. When i connect it to my port (USB 2.0) mode 2, it recognise 4 axis and buttons, but when i go and calibrate it, it moves just on X axis, not on Y one. If you have any tips, they are more than welcome.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  6 лет назад

      Yeah the "digital" part is what bothers me about that. When sticks started moving over to digital signal, that becomes more difficult for the convertor to deal with.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  7 лет назад

      Yep! The PC Invader was a budget stick (even for Logic3). It has three buttons, two axes and a hat which means it's suited to Mode 2 on the Rockfire. The Logic3 Phantom and Tornado definitely work with the Rockfire adapter so the PC Invader will pose no threat.

    The Blackhawk Digital doesn't work? Is there anyway to get it to work on a modern computer?

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  3 месяца назад

      Not that I can see. Unfortunately, that stick falls into a _really_ specific overlap. And the very specific technology it was using is too new for an analogue adapter and too old for a USB passthrough. I've seen people trying to make their own adapters, but it's something which will only work at its best paired with legacy hardware.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  7 лет назад

      By "the four pound one" do you mean a passive Gameport to USB adapter? If it is just a wire with different plugs on the end, the answer is almost certainly no. The Rockfire (and others) has circuitry inside it which converts that analogue signal into data the OS can understand. A passive adapter just passed those signals through without converting them.

    sadly is only supports 4 axis so only useful for simple joysticks. This is no good for HOTAS setups

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  7 лет назад

      Did I not mention that in the video? If so, then I apologise. Correct, this is for joysticks only. There are reports of users buying TWO of these adapters and using them with HOTAS setups but YMMV.

      It's a pet hate of mine for sure. So many great HOTAS setups out there still on gameports that can't be used. I'm experimenting with some solutions and will put them on my channel if I come up with some fixes that don't need a degree in electronics

    Hi there, Mi name is Adriano van Brakel and lives in the Netherlands, I was watching your video and now I have a question about the Gravis Blackhawk Digital,I have also a gameport converter from LogiLink also with 4 modes. % years ago I also tried all kinds of thinks to get it going, but unfertunately the same as with You, now way hoozee . Do You have or know a alternative for this joystick. Best regards, Adriano.v.b

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  4 года назад

      It's the "Digital" that's letting you down, Adriano. The standard Blackhawk is sending an analogue signal over Gameport, which is what the converter is looking for. The Digital version is sending a digital signal, which the converter does not recognise. Get a standard Blackhawk and you're golden. My recommendation for a joystick though is the excellent Saitek Cyborg.

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  3 года назад +1

      The issue is that your old joystick will be sending analogue data over USB, and modern Windows doesn't recognise analogue over USB any more. I'm not aware of an analogue to digital USB adapter. You might find one though!

      @@MattyStoked Well thanks for the info! It's a shame that perfectly good controllers (even if 15-20 years old) can't be used anymore with an easy work around. I've love to source a converter for this kind of thing rather than re-buy peripherals.

    Firstly, sadly for some reason I don’t seem to be able to reply to existing threads so apologies for a new comment thread...
    For those of you using the Saitek Cyborg 3D joystick, does the force feedback element also continue to work with this adapter, or is it just the movement and buttons that work?
    Also, have you found it works fine on:* Windows 10 32 bit* Windows 10 64 bit
    Thanks

    • @MattyStoked
      @MattyStoked  6 лет назад

      From memory I don't think the FFB comes through on the USB. This is due to the analogue way that FFB signals were sent over Gameport.

      Steam possibly only looks for Xinput controllers, and this would almost certainly be registering as Dinput. Depending on the game, it might recognise it without Steam having to agree. I'm playing my old DOS games via Steam in this video :)
