To celebrate the release of the Castlevania Netflix series, Region Locked takes a look at an original Nintendo (NES / Famicom) title that never left Japan, and was inspired by Castlevania: Holy Diver. Through our analysis of the game and its gameplay, we hope you learn some fun facts about Holy Diver and have the making of it explained here on the Did You Know Gaming channel.

Excellent! I love seeing more exposure for my favorite Famicom exclusive! A couple things, though:
1. Don't go into this game expecting it to play like Castlevania. The sprites and backgrounds take clear inspiration, but the gameplay is more like a cross between Mega Man and Konami's Getsu Fuuma Den (another awesome Famicom exclusive).
2. You can get through most of the game by taking your time, learning the enemy patterns, and using the right spell at the right time. Level four is by far the trickiest due to the abundance of pits and insane boss but if you can get through it, the remaining two are much more managable.

it's ironic how Japanese game producers underestimated the rest of the world when it came to difficult games, yet the feedback from Japan on the original xbox was that the low sales probably was because handling 2 thumbsticks was too hard.

Why has no one mentioned that the interface and spell system looks just like Zelda 2's?
I definitely noticed; it looks like they used the base engine from Zelda 2 and modified it.

This game is a mix of Castlevania, Legend of Zelda, AND Kid Icarus.
I like how some games didn't make it over to the west because they were supposedly too hard, but then other games were made harder during the localisation, such as Ninja Gaiden 3 and Streets of Rage 3.

It's amazing to see that castlevania and this game had very complex plot for a platform game, and at a time when video games was mainly about saving a princess.

A perfect game for an October Region Locked would be Capcom's Sweet Home for the Famicom. This JRPG is considered by many the first console survival horror game and is the spiritual predecessor to the original Resident Evil. It was probably not localized due to the permadeath mechanic, graphic imagry and because it was based on film that was never released international due to a poor box office performance.

Holy Diver did see a 2016 release in the United States as part of the collection included in Retro-Bit's "Generations" console.

Legal issues are probably the most common reason on why games don't get introduced to other places outside of Japan. The Super Robot Wars series is great, but has always been hindered because two different companies share character intellectual property of the characters in the game.
I only clicked on this video because I saw it have the title of one of the greatest Metal songs ever created, R.I.P Dio

I'm pretty sure Parte 5 wasn't being made yet when this game was made. _JoJo_ was on Part 4 at the latest.
If I remember correctly Castlevania 3 wasn't released on disk for the famicom. It was released on cartridge in japan. The extra chip used a pin on the famicom cartridge port that allowed it to use an extra chip. The NES didn't have this pin in its cartridge port. That is why the famicom version had better sound.
How do put an extra sound chip on a famicom disk? lol

Holy Diver was Brutal Legend nearly 20 years and four console generations apart.
Randy was also the name of one of Ozzy's drummers: Randy Castillo. He and Zakk were in Ozzy's band at the same time.
This game is so metal that it made my Steely Dan grow like Yellow Temperance.

Another possible metal reference I saw in the game was the medallion looking thing in the title screen looks like the album art from Whitesnake's 1987 album.

Don't worry - this was just a one-off special. This little riff was played by Greg as a bit of fun as the game is influenced by metal.

It isn't a Castlevania clone by any stretch. Completely different feel to it. The movement physics and power up system are completely different, plus you can attack in any direction.

im reminded more of Zelda 2 in visuals and menus and magic, while gameplay looks like it handles more like Castlevania.

I wouldn't be surprised if the only reason it didn't get localized was not to incur the wrath of the Crimson King himself, Robert Fripp.

I'm going to stand up and shout, this game is a hidden gem or a "Rainbow in the dark". It needs more tigers and mentions of the night, though.
Given all the music references and supernatural tone, I wouldn't be surprised if this started off as a licensed game based on JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood, similarly to how Sunman was supposed to be a Superman game or how Journey to Silius was originally a Terminator game.
