This is gonna sound weird, but my biggest issue was that Batman really promoted the whole idea of "found family" or "blood makes you related, love makes you family". Originally, Bruce had at least 3 sons. But the moment Damian showed up, the one who shared his blood was the only one that really mattered. Many writers treated the others as not Bruce's real sons, which just kinda irks me...

Because he is Bruce's True Son; regardless of all the sentimental build-up, when confronted with someone who is *ACTUALLY* your son.. shares your likeness, acts like you, is the spitting image of you in every way; it'll be hard to treat them as "just another member of the family". Whilst I agree that the other son's should never have been treated as if they aren't "real" sons, it's very much expected for Bruce to prioritize his actual son over them at least for a period of time. You are delusional if you think any father wouldn't do this lol

Many comic book readers including myself started reading Batman when Damian was already Robin. Heck the son of Batman movie doesn't have a prequel where Tim, Jason, or Dick are mentioned. Dick's just a minor character in the story and that works.

The first Robin should not be Bruce’s actual son it fucks the whole thing up. He has to be an orphan for it to come full circle in a more “positive” way

Damien's very existence has sadly destroyed Tim Drake. DC has completely disrespected Tim.
The return of Jason Todd almost made Dick Grayson a secondary character. It's a well known fact that former DC editor Dan Didio HATED Dick Grayson. He always felt that Dick "aged" Batman. But, giving Batman a "son" REALLY ages.him...

I think it has a lot to do with marketability. Aging a character recontextualizes them outside of the mold they grew to popularity in. Many in marketing fear that growing and maturing a character would make them too distinctly different than before, and alienate newcomers with a whole bunch of backstory.
Essentially, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." That being said, I think I speak for many readers and fams when I paraphrase "iron rusts from disuse, and stagnant water loses purity."

The problem with Damien is that he was created to be Dick's Robin. The dynamic between Dick's lighter Batman and Damien's darker Robin was great. Paring Damien with Bruce is only interesting to me because Damien is his son. Having Damien be a killer that Batman has to reel in is nothing new. He did it with Huntress.
Dick helped Damien become more than a living weapon. He let him become a kid. Bruce isn't really equipped to do that. He doesn't have those interpersonal skills to break Damien out of that edgy shell. Dick does. Damien's development as a character will always be based on his time with Dick.

    • @OzEtlar
      @OzEtlar 3 месяца назад +2

I definitely love Dick and Damian dynamic too but he wasn’t created to be Dick’s Robin. He was created to show that Batman cannot leave his mission even at the cost of a possible family, not even for his own son. He was created to show that Bruce cannot be aged out nor can he truly leave the Batman mantle (many because of meta reasons - he is too iconic) so he can never have a son that grows up, can never have a legacy nor can he pass on the torch. It was also to showcase an intense divorce (X100) and how the child of those marriage are the casualties of such battles between parents, in this case the metaphor became literal. There are a-lot of analysis of Grant Morrison’s Batman run out there (and who could blame them, it is considered one of the best modern batman run). He intended for Damian to die in the end but Damian becomes too imprinted on the Batman mythos and they end up keeping him. So yes, Grant Morrison not only write a great Batman story but also successfully leave his imprint on the batman mythos by accident. He gives Bruce a canon biological son in continuity.
Tomasi brings Damian back to life and smooth out the rough edges that Morrison did not address in his run and DC manage to have their cake and eat it too: Showing the older audiences that they were not as stagnant as they though by allowing a major change/growth in batman mythos because he now have a biological son. Damian will also always be a child or a teenager to be a living showcase of how Batman mythos will always prioritise Bruce being Batman above all else. Unless it is elseworld.

He gets character development, starts building his own persona and story, and develops profound relationships between a number of people. Then a new writer comes along, ignores everything that was done to Damian’s character, and suddenly Damian is just an assassin that's destined to create an apocalyptic future.

I started reading his solo because I was excited to see where he'd go post Robin. Really enjoyed the island tournament arc and his thing with Flatline. Was so pumped to see where it went next, and then it completely switched writers and plots.
This is why despite loving DCAU I struggle to get into the comics outside of one shots. Every time I try to get in they're on another reboot, or they change plots midway or completely drop the ball on characters.
For example I was introduced to the Teen Titans from the 2003 cartoon, and when you look at the comics it's like Raven has 3 different solos in 3 different canons. Plus the cartoon comic. Plus Go.
I understand they are trying to change things for new fans but it's difficult to get invested when nothing is consistent. Same thing happened with the DCEU. The Batman went through so many changes and a ton of films got scrapped. Don't even know what timeline we're in.
Also was pissed the DCAMU decided to reboot too just as it was getting interesting. It's like man at this rate is Damian even going to show up in the live action?

10:51 minor correction, Damian didn't magically lose his powers, Batman created a scenario that forced him to use them all up. Batman noted Damian's powers were fading so he tried to get it all out of his system in a controlled environment rather than have the powers stop working whilst they were on patrol. This was important because Damian got super reckless whilst he had his powers so if they stopped working whilst Damian was showing off, it would end badly.

They should go with Dick Grayson-Batman and Damian Wayne-Robin to start with the live action. The problem with making Bruce in live action entertainment is that he's usually written pretty poorly due to his more stoic personality. Damian and Bruce don't balance one another very well because their personalities are too similar. I also feel that it would be easier to start out with Dick as a much more light-hearted Batman who is struggling under the weight of the mantle and trying to raise the younger brother who barely knew their father and believes that he'd be better off on his own. This could bring Jason and Tim in the "we only see each other at weddings or funerals" type of situation as they all deal with their, admittedly complicated, feelings for the man who raised them. Of course, Bruce would come back into the picture eventually, but I feel that this would be a great introduction to the family. It would also have a start in establishing those characters into the live action as well as being overall easier to develop great writing and acting by not having to immediately focus on such a complicated character.

My biggest problem with DC's writing of any Robin including Damian is their relationship with Bruce. I hate it when they write Bruce as a distant figure in their lives. I know being a good man doesn't always ensure that you will be the perfect father but they could at least make him seem like a guy who cares about the children he raised. Even though they want to stick with the idea of the batfamily being an actual family, comics where Bruce's relationship with any of the robins are portrayed almost always include some form of negative interaction.
It always feels like the modern writers don't quite know how to characterize batman. Bruce is clearly not the young playboy billionaire of the eighties and nineties nor is he the serious and broody man in his thirties of the Tim Drake robin era. DC made the decision to keep all the robins and other younger characters in their teens to twenties which means their Batman is a middle-aged man with a family. But most writers who write Batman struggle with this very concept of a familyman when they write Bruce in normal Batman stories. I also think most writers find it tiresome to deal with all these characters who individually have complex relationships with Bruce and might influence him as a character. These writers can usually avoid dealing with characters other than Damian simply because they have a place elsewhere in canon. Damian never had a team and is supposed to be a kid like pre-bendis Jon who is supposed to live with a parent. Writing Bruce by keeping Damian or any robin he raised in the picture means a deeper dive into the character with the perspective of him having an alive and well family along with his crusade. Most writers don't want to deal with that stuff which results in pointlessly confrontational interactions between Bruce and the robins. If they can figure out how to write a 40+ year old family man Bruce who has made peace with his crusade without constantly trying to revert to the nineties characterization, they can probably figure out what to do with all the robins including Damian

Him being vulnerable should come just as natural as with Batman. Damian does everything he does to feel loved, but he also is insecure about his own existance and purpose. He has his own trauma to fight, something he does on his own since he never seems to talk to anyone about it. Not when he was a child soldier, not when he lost people he cared about, not when he went to hell at the age of 10

Edit: I actually agree with the closing statements about the amount of movie buildup it would take to make all of the Robin origin stories. If Damian is the first Robin we see, but in-universe occupies the role of the 4th Robin, I'm totally fine. Now, on the subject of endangering a child:
I still think that starting with Dick Grayson as robin would have been fine. If you read Dark Victory, it's pretty apparent Bruce wanted to keep Dick out of the vigilante life but physically COULD NOT. Dick "Bruce let me kill a man pls" Grayson was hellbent on taking the same path Bruce did, so The Bat took him on as Robin for his own safety. Eventually, that led to Dick becoming a more well-adjusted adult than Bruce.
When presented like that, it works. Because that's the story. Batman didn't adopt a child and draft him into a personal war on crime like Frank Miller's books depict; He allowed Robin to exist for the benefit of someone who met the same fate he did.

It’s very ninja/assassin like with the hood and I think it looks the coolest. And I think he is really interesting and I’m very sympathetic towards him. As a lot of his ‘coldness’ is due to not having a support network around him. I also love when Bruce and Him kinda open up to each other. Like, Damian, Tim, and Jason have all been fucked over by DC (I'm sure other characters have as well) and I really didn't know how bad it was because adaptations always clean up the time lines and events so they make way more sense
Edit: also I know I'm super late to this, but they're either gonna do just Damian or just one of Dick/Jason/Tim and Damian. And with every new movie, the robin from the previous movie has quit being robin in time for some new kid to come along and insist that they're DOING THIS, whether Batman likes it or not. We can have time jumps between movies, so everyone ages up at a reasonable pace. Maybe Talia can be in the first movie, so by the time the forth comes around (or fifth, depending on whether we include Stephany), Damian's age makes sense when he shows up ready to assume the mantle while Bruce is the background saying "NO! I WORK ALONE!" while several past robins all snicker in the shadows. Can't we have that?

The problem it did that people loved Damian so much, nobody cares for Tim anymore (So I guess his suspicions and concerns were true after all XD). Because we already meddled in his past, and batman's sidekicks doesn't really leave gotham, we kinda forget Tim (and also a lot of other superheroes who kinda disappeared, like signal, batwing, batwoman). Now it seems DC is putting all their chips in nightwing so Idk what they are going to do with Tim. Like every batfamily had a reason to be in the family - alfred is like the grandfather/surgeon/extra father/the heartwarming alfred, barbara is the guy in the chair (or woman*), nightwing is the the robin that got older/hero model/batman backup/fun one and then there is robin aka damian aka the cool robin/the over the top robin/the badass robin and there is of course the black ship of the family which is red hood. Now, where do you put Tim? What is his role? I think we need him to fill a more unique role. There was a couple of comics where Tim grew to be batman and had a gun and all kinds of stuff. What if we make Tim like a special agent? Like a governement agent and he will be their tactical agent? The reader could connect all the dots until we reach a moment in the future where Tim is like batman and also damian is a batman but both has a different approach than bruce's.

Why would people care about a character that the writers literally ruined by turning him bisexual for no reason other than to be woke and inclusive? It's like the son of Superman... Guy was interesting, amazing, until they made him ALSO bisexual. From then on, none of them had personalities, or the behavior they used to have, they're now a mimic parrot that repeats the same bs that some random hormonal troll of Twitter would repeat. And Tim was my favorite Robin. But then.... then they made him this crying monster.

@@robertoj.9509 I think it started to be bad for jon ever since they braught jor el back to life and he went on a journey with him and jor el kinda left him stranded and then he just grew up and we the readers and also his parents were robbed of seeing him blossom. The super sons were awesome and it was a good direction for the characters, just sad :(

I can agree with that for sure, if we get night wing, red hood And red robin. If they ignore them, then I'm out. I've been waiting way too long for night wing to get something good in the movies.

They should’ve had a little run with Damian as Red X, I’ve always been interested in seeing Red X’s character as an actual hero/anti-hero with a real story.

So Basically from what I gathered....I think they should do is the following:
•Batman and Robin(with damian as the Robin and featuring other past robins)
•The Nightwing(where they will show a bit of dick Grayson as a Robin and how he later became nightwing)
•The Red hood(Again, the same way showing bit past, then continuing to the present day)
    •The Red Robin("")

As someone who's favorite character is Tim Drake, seeing how badly DC is handling him is depressing

      I have a fear.
i believe there is a strong possibility that nightwing is already established in the new dcu as well as the animated movie universe.
there is also the possibility of them doing jason todd as well.
and my biggest fear is that they will just ignore tim and put damian as the third robin

Tim was always a great Detective and was more serious than the other robins but not cartoonishly serious like Damian so I think he'd work pretty well as Batman
