My hot take is that Jason just fundamentally does not work as a villain. I know trauma changes people and stuff but Jason does some really heinous stuff as a villain and no amount of trauma can make someone who was once so compassionate talk about using children as fodder in a gang war lol. It just isn’t believable, he works better as an anti-hero

Well, they made it work by pretending that Jay had never been a sweet, starry-eyed kid and always had a violent streak, which in reality had come out of nowhere shortly before A Death in the Family. The more fundamental issue is that you can either have a "fallen son" firmly outside the Batfamily, who kills people, or you can have a "cool son" firmly inside the Batfamily, who doesn't, but you can't have someone going back and forth; it ruins all the characters.

I honestly feel like missed a real good opportunity to have Jason as another big brother figure for Damian to show what a potentially killer Robin looked like. It would have been a good means to redeem Jason and play off him having a sort of soft spot for him seeing the aggression in the kid. But they never really went that route.
Like you could still have him find the good role model big bro aspect of Nightwing but then have Jason be the cool brother that initially seems like a bad influence but he reluctantly wants to be better for his little brother. That'd be the best route movie-wise, using a slightly toned down Bat Family Jason.

How to fix Red Hood is to have him constantly battle with wanting to be good but finding himself falling back on it being easier to go the lethal route. I think it works best when he alternates between being paired with the rest of the bat family and a couple of solo adventures like the outlaw era. The bonds of brotherhood with his fellow Robin's and batgirl help keep him on the straight and narrow but when he's on his own can he keep walking that line? It would also be good to introduce a dark mirror for him. Someone that represents that villain era Red Hood that he can measure his growth against but also tempt him to fall back on his old ways.

This might not work because fighting that urge is not a stable state/ status quo. Meaning it can be an excellent premise for maybe a run or two but it demands resolution i.e. succumbing to violence fully reforming. You cannot make this struggle over morality last more than a few years else it gets old. You need a status quo that is at least semi stable and can be usable for decades

I honestly think keeping jason a killer would work better (unless he enters gotham, where he abides by batman's no killing rule). It would be neat to have stories centering around Jason stomping out criminal gangs and figuring out when to kill and when to spare, as well as delve into how he fights when hes forced not to kill. Give him some stories where chases down a drug cartel that flees fo gotham, where he has to change tactics and work with others, give him a b plot where he reconnects with other human beings, and slowly becomes less angry.
I'm only saying this becaue I think jason kind of is the flaw in batman's ideology, where batman's inability to kill resulted in his death.

    • @TDM4895
      @TDM4895 Год назад +7

@@silverprimus321boi9 I can see that. Maybe have things come to a head with batman and possibly the rest of the family where Jason says that yes murder is wrong, but killing to preserve your life and/or the lives of others is justifiable. And if it isn't then how does Bruce justify maiming all the people he's beaten, stabbed and blown up with batarangs over the years? As a highly trained martial artist he would know a fair bit about broken bones, torn ligaments, bruised and ruptured organs, and traumatic brain injuries. Those people might still be breathing, but living might well be off the table. He could also lay all the people that the various batman villains have killed at Bruce's feet as well. Batman is a vigilante; any evidence he finds is worthless in court. Ergo; every time he takes down the Joker or whoever else, they're basically slapped on the wrist. Maybe have this lead to a tense compromise where killing is on the table for self-defense and defending others only on a trial basis.

Red Hood killing his enemies is what makes him unique, especially in DC and as a member of Batman's world. Having him travel around the world solo tracking down criminals and killing them could lead to really fun and interesting stories, occasionally crossing paths with other heroes who are too keen on his methods leading to confrontations that could impact both characters. Having him put down the guns and hang out with the bat fam just doesn't sit right with me, especially if joker is still around wreaking havoc.

      Thank You!
The way I've always percieved dealing with Jason is through two paths.
      Path 1:
Keep Jason dead, keep the consequences of a kid getting into this life there keep that a remainder to Batman that this vigilante gig creates a world that isn't for a kid to get involved in and to make him just stop taking more kid sidekicks.
      Path 2:
He returns as Red Hood, he is someone who isn't afraid of crossing the line that Batman is afraid of. But, don't make him go around killing everything that moves in his way and being jealous of the other guys that replaced him...He only kills absolute scum of the earth.
Make him struggle with who deserves punishement and who can be redeemed and rehabilitated, and when he teams up with other Bat people it should always be on HIS TERMS or simply just don't make them team up.
Him existing as Red Hood and him crossing the line is THE CONSEQUENCE of what happened to him on the hands of Joker ''Fixing'' or ''Developing'' him to just be part of the Batfamily again removes that consequence and removes what's unique about him and about his background growing up. Don't let him just become another Batgroupie who is just there for the cute and wholesome moments or the money shot during team-ups...That way he becomes a grumpier Nightwing in a different attire.

@@LP1ToTheEndOfTime Exactly. My perception of Red Hood is based on his depiction in the Under the Red Hood movie and the the way Jason is written now and what he did in the comics after that event going full villain just don't line up with who I perceive Jason to be. He's the one who will stay and comfort someone going through hell like Batman would, but he's also willing to saying when enough is enough. Crossing that line not only because he does take some satisfaction in wiping scum from the earth(which is important to show he doesn't always have the moral high ground and makes for more interesting stories), but because he personally has been on the receiving end of what these monsters are capable of.

@@mitab1 Yeah, what people get wrong about Red Hood fans is that they think they are advocating for Jason to kill every criminal in his path.
NO! We advocate for him to kill those who deserve it, those who can't be contained instead of depending on a broken revolving door system to do the job that they are too incompetent to ever do while costing more innocents their lives.
But problem with ongoing continuity and Batman's popularity, is that the biggest scumbags need to be kept around to sell more books and Batman has to always be right so, to make the audience automatically ignore Jason's point of view, just turn him into a complete psychopath and the readers will automatically side with Batman.
When you think of it, the no-kill rule of many of those superheroes didn't come about because the editors thought it was the morally right thing to do, instead, they thought it was the commercially right thing to do to get more readers and keep kids buying the comics after the CCA was imposed and that reasoning just bleeds in every story, where Batman, for example, would be okay with slitting Jason's throat than let him kill the cash cow known as The Joker even though he was characterized previously to be okay with letting someone else murder scumbags like Lex and The Joker... Yeah, DC would go against established characterization to keep those motherfuckers alive to get more stories and sell more event books with Gotham or Metropolis being a warzone again.
Bruce, once upon a time, went to the court to make sure Freeze doesn't get an undeserved punishment, but DC never made him go to court to make sure someone like Joker gets the punishment he deserves that's been long-overdue.

Batman and the gang believes in rehabilitation, hope that even someone as twisted as the Joker can be saved from themselves. In Joker's case specifically we'll never see that possibility outside of elseworld stories like White Knight, because DC needs Joker to be a villain to maintain the status quo and sell books. The whole "why doesn't anyone kill Joker" argument will never have a satisfying conclusion in universe, the only real answer is a meta one. Unfortunately the longer they continue going and the stakes and the heinous crimes Joker commits keep rising, the more the audiences suspension of disbelief is strained.

The issue I have with Jason despite him being my favorite bat family member is exactly this. They never know what to do with him and end up going back on really good amazing plot points for some reason. Like, him giving up the guns was an amazing step for his character who'd spent so long in his anger trying to kill criminals because he thought it was the only solution given his death and Talia's manipulations. But than Task Force Z happens, and now he's chasing the Joker across the everywhere with guns again too and it's just really weird to me that they can't for some reason take the time to integrate him into the actual batfamily again and do things with his siblings and reconnect with alfred and such.

I think the best approach for Jason is yes let him give up guns. Just after task force z. DC should of given him his own book or even bring back red hood and the outlaws. Even bringing back Red hood and Arsenal as a duo trying to figure out what they want to do with there lives. have Roy focus on Lian and Jason trying to be a better person. Even being inspired by Roy to settle down and start a family with Rose or Artemis. Just something to change the characters progress.

    • @anarchy9756
      @anarchy9756 Год назад

I think it's an interesting idea to have him potentially settle down. But I'd disagree on resurrecting the Outlaws, it's already well treaded ground to begin with and doesn't add much to his character. I'd also disagree with guns part, but that's purely because any time since New 52 that he has them they turn him into this wannabe Punisher character.
I think that if Jason is going to be using guns that he take lives. And if he's taking lives then I don't want him to be a Punisher knockoff. Make him a crime lord again or have him continue the casino he'd gotten involved in.
In terms of original ideas for him the options are limitless. There's no reason he couldn't go off on his own like Damian does to better understand himself and make peace with who he wants to be. Which seemed like the idea they were going to work with after Task Force Z, but instead he hyper focuses on the Joker again.
I just want some actual character development for him as a person. And the two main ways we could do that would either be him officially and permanently breaking away from Batman to be on his own or to fully reconcile with the family.
I'm tired of this in between and flip flopping the writers always do

Red Hood could be a deep character for DC. He is the ultimate symbol for “the ends justify the means”. I could see him becoming a Punisher type character but Red Hood lacks that inner struggle that makes Punisher easier to make stories for. DC has never really explored Jason’s upbringing. They just gave us a couple stories here and there and that’s it. The problem with Red Hood is that he isn’t a deep character. He literally just popped back up on the scene and that was that. Red Hood theme of doing bad things to do good things could be something that fans could get very interested in and provide DC a way to flesh him out. That’s why the Red Hood Dark Trinity worked.

All these problems with red hood are also there with Tim and Damian they don’t know or aren’t sure what to do. I think the problem is DC wants to keep the batkids in gotham which is not helping any of them. Damian training with the other warriors on Lazarus island was genius. Even having his own group of friends. As for Jason after the outlaws disbanded and task force z got shut down. He's back to scare one chasing the Joker. I would of liked it if DC just brought back the outlaws with a new team and Jason just travelling around the country taking down different crime lords and corrupt governments. like
Damains the assassin, Tims the detective and Dicks the spy.
the problem is Jason didnt get something like this to stick. the thing that made him different is that he's like the anti hero but they can't justify him being it and staying around the batfamily unlike they can with someone like Damian or Orphan as both were young and were kind of groomed into those roles and at times Damain goes back to that. his character plays out in so many different ways he's either the best of the bat family or the worst. like stories like DCeased and even the ending of the apokolopis war animated movie or bad ones like the 666 one or batman beyond where he goes back to the league of assassins and it postures him in each direction
Jason either gets boring or goes nowhere, because his things being anti batman. he either doesn't grow and stays cool but predictable or he gives it up and he just becomes an extra in the batfamily almost

Honestly i would like a Red Hood book where he moves into a city with a huge mafia / mob presence that doesn't have a resident hero ( similar to dick when he became Nightwing and moved to BludHaven) and he pretty much starts from ground zero and basically just becomes a lethal protector of this city and works to take down all mafia influence. I honestly prefer Jason to have more grounded stories / villains so i feel this direction would work best as a start. Then over time they could start to build up Jason's own rouges gallery and start to amp things up and start crafting him some potentially iconic storylines around said rouges. He could also have his own supporting cast (not other bat family members) and we can start to see him form relationships with these supporting characters and his rouges and start to really build up his own separate ( yet still connected to the bat family for certain storylines and cross overs ) mythos in his own little corner of the DC. This is just a thought i always have as a huge Red Hood fan. would love to see them take an approach like this to the character and ACTUALLY let it stick and give us a full run of a book like this instead of having super off the wall stories and Teams in his books. If executed properly i feel like this direction could really flesh Jason as a character out more and give us more Red Hood stories to be adapted into other media instead of them just constantly re-using the Under The Red Hood storyline.
Imo his rouges gallery and his storylines should be more grounded in street crime , drugs , trafficking , etc. Red Hood works best when his story is more grounded / street level.
One more little thing : if they were ever to take this direction I don't want to constantly see a clash of Jason's and Batman's ideals. I feel they should let them disagree on each others approach to things but have Batman except Jason's methods since Jason would be operating in his own city with his own gallery of rouges / the mafia. Tbh I don't even want other members of the Bat Family to appear in Jason's book often. I have some other more detailed ideas but these are the main ones I feel would work if DC would actual give an author free reign to give Jason a true direction to go in.
Please let me know what you guys think of my ideas under this comment. Would love to hear opinions on my opinion lol .

I think my biggest problem with DC and Red Hood just like many other characters is the always "they need to be redeemed" point that many writers and readers think a character needs. I was upset when they seemed to want to do that with Superboy Prime in the one issue that eventually got cancelled. There are people who don't want the characters to be redeemed. Have they redeemed the Joker forever? Made any of the superheroes a canonical villain permanently that is one of the main in the Justice League? So why change from what made him popular just because he is the black sheep of the Bat family? Keep him as Batman's greatest failures as they do with his constant backstory. Keep him as that one that doesn't agree with Batman's way of running Gotham. Keep him as their biggest problem because he knows too much about the Bat family and can cause big problems for them. That would be excellent to see just what that trauma and betrayal did. Like comics do in comic world, they aren't real. If they can come back to life over and over again, they can stay evil or villains. They make it more complicated or listen to fans too damn much.

In the whole Hush story. It turned out that it actually was Jason, and got replaced by Clayface at the very ending when Jason hides behind a wall or something like that.
Talia wanted him to become his own version of the Bat, Jason was hell bent on revenge and Talia thought for a while that yes he needed to work through it. But didn't really go anywhere either.
Also don't forget that he was also a part of the Court of Owls storyline. Where he was "integral" by protecting a side of the city or something.
I love Jason, but I agree. His story is a bit of a mess. Outlaws was a good start, I liked it. Jason did sleep with Starfire but it didn't last long either. She dates Arsenal for a while and that had its own issues and got completely disregarded when she got her own series again.
Dark Trinity was fun. Up until the space ship. They shouldn't have made Bizarro smart like that. (Though Jason really loving his jetpack felt right. Lol)
I'd love a proper Red Hood in James Gunn's movie line up. But then one that is taking a few movies to flesh out. Or where he simply is and how he works around the Bat.

He will allow some crime to happen (drugs, smuggling, arms dealing) but ONLY when he controls it all. If someone is dealing drugs to kids, or do ANYTHING to kids Jason will put them down permanently. Same goes for murders and rapists and all the other sickos in the city. He can even use the wealth to better his city, open shelters for abused victims, the homeless, and renew buildings for people to live in. He controls crime and makes sure everyone is under his controls while also not only putting down the real criminals but also giving back to the people

Bruce's devotion to justice prevented him from dating Catwoman for years because she stole stuff. No way he should be cool with a murderer hanging out in the batcave even if he turned over a new leaf, unless it's like a temporary alliance of necessity. Jason should be facing life in prison.

Simply put, Red Hood should be DC’s Punisher/John Wick/DoomSlayer/Kratos all combined into one in order to make him one of the most lethal/dangerous human beings in the DC Universe. He has little to no association with Batman, or the rest of the Bat Family, and even comes into conflict with them, plus other heroes that have issue with him in his genocide against the worst of the worst criminals. Hell, have him end up killing a few heroes that get into his way to show how deadly and unremorseful he actually is, who’ll not let anything or anyone get in his way of his crusade. He has little to no empathy, and barely values human life as a byproduct of his time in Tartarus after his demise, having incurable PTSD from it which makes him even more ruthless and cruel. With these character traits in mind, you now have a interesting character that fits into the larger DC Universe on his own two feet as opposed to being the robin trying to be Spider-Man who uses guns, often non-lethal guns via rubber bullets or some ballocks like that. DC/Warner are sitting on a goldmine with Red Hood that they continually piss away his potential value when he can be their John Wick in terms of box office potential.

The Red Hood is my favorite thing about DC. I was 16 when the Death in The Family comics came out. This was back when you could buy them at drug stores. I loved Jason Todd as Robin and had a lot of anxiety over what was going to happen to him. I even called the phone number to save him. I was really angry when he died, and resented Denny O'Neil for a while. I eventually stopped collecting comics altogether because of some bad experiences in my twenties as an illustrator, and once I learned how the sausage was made, I kind of lost my appetite for it. Fast forward 30 or so years, I start publishing my own books and zines, and there's a lot of overlap with comics because we work with comic stores sometimes. I wanted to see what was out there, so I started collecting again. I learned, much to my delight, that Jason Todd was back and doing things you'd expect adult Jason Todd to be doing. I don't have a problem with him being kind of a DC/Bat Family Punisher. I feel like it's the most honest depiction of what happens when you adopt children, put them through hell and raise them to fight crime. Every time The Bat Family shows up, I get a little uncomfortable, because I'm reminded that Bruce Wayne plucks children out of the wild and throws them into dangerous situations. It's hard for me to view Batman as a good guy anymore because of this. I think having two well-adjusted former Robins like Tim Drake and Nightwing is way more unusual than the one that goes around slaughtering bad guys. I'm surprised they don't all do it.

i think jason can work in the DCU still and could even work very well tbh. build him up over a couple movies through dialogue about him - maybe bruce uses him as a cautionary tale to damian. ppl always draw comparisons between him and damian so they can use that to their advantage here and use damian as a surrogate to show us how jason was as a robin while bruce recognizes that and through his attempts to avoid repeating history we learn about jason until his eventual return / redemption.
a movie universe allows them to build continuity and context over time so they don’t HAVE to make jason’s whole story fit into one movie like under the red hood and he doesn’t have to appear immediately in the first movie either.

I like how they brought back the dark trinity in webtoon.

Dark doesn't mean evil. Artemis was the rougher Wonder Woman. She was more brutal.

I really liked the All Caste addition to Jason's character. Given the way he was brought back via the Lazarus Pit, there was already some sort of mystical connection to the League of Assassins, plus the All-Blades are just really cool imo. They're also pretty situational, so it's not like he can use them for everything. Swords powered by his soul that only work against magic and mystical creatures is a really unique thing Jason brings to the table beyond "Batman with guns".
As for the movies, the ideal scenario would be to have Batman's trilogy focus on doing Death In The Family, Hush, and Under The Red Hood as their own movies; DITF to establish Jason's rough past, Hush to both tease his return and establish Tim as a B plot, and then UTRH for Jason's return, then use that as a jumping off point for a Red Hood show or even a trilogy of movies.
Since we're getting BaTB, they could make regular comparisons to Jason with Damian's troubles to set up the idea and then go from there?

I know this video is 2 months old but today I was wondering "what's the deal with Red Hood" and found this. Great video, as someone who does not know much about the DC comic books this is a great explanation.
