    DC Animation has given lots of stellar films over the years, and at the top of the lists is always Batman: Under The Red Hood. A movie so good it could be considered one of Batman's greatest films, Batman : Under The Red Hood encapsulates why Batman is such a brilliant character, as well as gives us one of the greatest portrayals of Jason Todd as the Red Hood.

    The last line Jason says “this is the best day of my life” it just hits different cause you know what’s coming. I feel Jason is different from every other robin so far, cause unlike Tim or Dick and maybe even Damien they are had some sort of family unit etc Jason didn’t, his parents didn’t care much for him didn’t look after him at all he was a child who never experienced the love from his parents. So Bruce literally in Jason eyes bruce was in every sense of the word his “real” father, the only father he ever knew the only person who cared for him and looked after him. So when he died and found out that his “father” didn’t avenge him, it stung it hurt him more than anything, the person he trusted, looked up to and adored above anything else. Did nothing, just like his parents and everyone else in his life. (New 52 / Rebirth)
    I love the character of Jason Todd he is my favourite, the most realistic / gritty character who’s finally get the attention he deserves and then titans fucks it,

    • @1normallyimpulsive
      @1normallyimpulsive 2 года назад +42

      SAME! Like I can go on & on about Jason! But TLDR, the thing that sings the most about Jason's story is that he didn't *need* to be Robin. Bruce took Jason in b/c he thought Jason would have grown up to be a super criminal and he thought that Jason needed an outlet, like Dick did (plus Bruce wanted a partner). But as Alfred said, Jason needs a family, not a cape. Out of all the Robins, Jason was the only one "chosen" by Batman to be so. That's a lot of pressure, which led to Jason believing he was only Bruce's son b/c he was Robin.
      Had Bruce just taken Jason in only as a son, Jason would have been fine. Or at least let Jason work through his abandonment/anger issues before throwing him into crime-fighting as Alfred said, then Jason might not have died at all.

    • @denisewhite6751
      @denisewhite6751 2 года назад +26

      @@1normallyimpulsive omg yes totally agree, I feel like Bruce thought Jason was going to be like Dick, but Jason is different. Jason already had quite a twisted view of the world having grown up on the streets unlike Dick who before there murder had a quite a good upbringing (ignoring the court of owls shit) . The biggest failure of Batman was thinking that dick and Jason’s trauma where the same and so the same method would work. No! Dick needed a guardian a mentor, a friend, Jason needed a father, he needed family to which like you said he never got so he pushed himself further into becoming robin and lost himself.
      He’s a very tragic character. I believe out of all the Robins Jason adored / loved bruce the most which is why his betrayal was that much worst and why he can never quite forgive him. Because in Jason eyes he was the only one, all his good memories stem from the moment he met him, there literally nothing before him, (literally proven his best memory was when he was sick and Bruce took the time off being Batman and took care of him) his timeline would go before Batman and after that how much he meant to Jason.

    • @1normallyimpulsive
      @1normallyimpulsive 2 года назад +20

      @@denisewhite6751 AND Jason clearly suffered from an inferiority complex when he first started. This is later explored with Tim, but I have always held the belief that Tim & Jason basically goes through the same struggles, only differences is that Jason never wanted to or had a way to voice his pains. Which further proved to Bruce that he was helping, even tho he really wasn’t. Jason held a lot of stuff in & his death was the thing that brought it out.
      At the end of UTRH, Jason basically asked Bruce to prove his love, prove that all the good times were not because he wanted something from Jason but rather because he loved Jason.
      Bruce not being good with emotions & conflict resolution responded poorly by turning his back to Jason (and throwing a Batarang into Jason’s neck in the comics). Pushing Jason to snap, and venting his anger onto Tim & Dick: the Robin’s he never was & could never be.
      BUT HE STILL LOVES BRUCE, as seen in Battle of The Cowl when Dick showed an “if you’re seeing this, then I’m dead” video from Bruce. When Bruce admits to that he didn’t help Jason and that he take responsibility for Jason’s mental state, offering to help Jason in anyway that he needs. JASON HAS A WHOLE MENTAL/EMOTIONAL BREAKDOWN!
      His heart is telling him this is true & Bruce really does love despite everything, but his mind is telling him that Bruce can’t be trusted.
      Uuuugggghh, you got me ranting, Jason is so complex! Love it!

      But this is also why Jason/Red Hood is such an amazing character! In the comics to my knowledge, he only killed criminals that are murders/r%pist/abusers/drug dealers. The types of crimes that put innocent lives in danger. I know he went off the deep end tho in Pre-New 52 & Dick put him in Arkham Asylum, but even then Jason was racking bodies.
      I will say this; in the recent comics, The Red Hood & The Outlaws, they did a good job in showing that Jason can't just murder people willy-nilly. It has to be for a legit reason, they would be "a danger to society" (and the police can't stop them) if they go free to justify killing the person.

    The majority of the problems with the DC animated movies is WB. They refuse to increase the budget. They have a very tight release schedule for these movies. They forced the movies to build a continuity around New 52, which was pointless since even the comics abandoned New 52 after only a few years.
    A big reason why these earlier movies are better is because the writers were allowed to do what they want. Yes, they made mistakes and did some bad stuff but they were experimenting and trying new things. There was excitement over the movies at the beginning. But over time, the 3 movies per year schedule has gotten to be too much. It used to be that the writers were putting out things they had been wishing to make for years. But after so many movies, it's become a grind, instead of making things they were excited for, they're just churning movies out on a schedule.

While WB wanted to slow down the production of 3 movies a year, DC Comics was the one who wanted to push the New 52 so bad because they wanted to use them to boost sales for the comics. But the comics sucked and it showed, several times in the middle of the New 52 movies, we would get a random movie that was based on something from the older comics (The Long Holloween) or completely original (Batman Ninja) and they did extremely better.

    • @1normallyimpulsive

      And if you really look at their relationship, Jason was not some "violent/angry kid", Jason was actually really smart & really kind (most of the attributes the fandom gives to Dick & Tim). Jason is just traumatized in ways that non of the other characters had dealt with before. Jason had trust issues from years of living on the street and being basically abandoned by his parents at the age of 9, but the one time he trusted someone, the one time he had faith in someone, it ended up costing him his life.

The only thing I think that falls down for me is Neil Patrick Harris' exposition as Nightwing, the PG cursing of Jason and an odd choice of John DiMaggio as Joker. The thing that would have raised it the most for me would have been Conroy & Hamill, it would have felt a lot more sympathetic to Jason as we all have that existing link to Hamill's Joker. It would have sold the torment Bruce feels about leaving the supervillains alive a little more as we've watched and heard him go through it all for the better part of 2 decades at that point.

      I personally liked the different voice actors for two reasons plain and simple. 1) as a kid, after hearing the OG Animated Series voice cast as characters for so long, this movie seemingly made me look at the characters with a more gritty, lived in approach if you will (not that I don't like the Animated Series cast, you just can't replicate that). And 2) it was a (to me) successful change in pace. As I just said, I nothing can ever replace the Animated Series cast... But that being said, we need to accept the closest thing we can get

    I love how Jason forgave Bruce for failing to save him. It makes it a lot easier for the audience to look at his point of view instead of just seeing him as some crazy brat who’s completely unaware of important details just for the sake of being right. He might do that a little due to what he went through and the raw emotion from it all but he understands what happened that night.
    He’s mad at Batman’s code and thinks it’s ineffective pointless optimistic bullshit😄. He knows Bruce did everything in his power to get there in time and save him. He knows Bruce loved him and didn’t abandon him even if Bruce feels like he did. Jason knows he put himself in that situation. He knows that Bruce told him to wait to investigate the warehouse so they could take on Joker together. He knows he disregarded that order and ended up springing Joker’s trap which resulted in his death. Bruce won’t forgive himself because he recruited Jason and he was his responsibility to protect. Bruce blames himself for things that he shouldn’t. Because his parents would die every time if it meant protecting young Bruce. Jason loved being part of a family and having Bruce take him off the street. He loved being loved and having that protective father figure. Despite the ups and downs Jason probably didn’t regret Bruce recruiting him and he doesn’t blame him for his death.
    Jason blames him for how he reacted. He knows the “no kill” rule isn’t effective and leads to more innocents suffering. He’s not wrong. Bruce’s rule is practical in that it prevents him from just being another criminal who takes life as he deems fit like Jason. But it’s also a liiiittle selfish in that he doesn’t want to become that. He doesn’t want to lose himself and become the evil he fights. But mostly it’s because he knows the vigilante like red hood is likely not going to lead to the positive outcome that Jason thinks. He thinks it’s a simple solution but it’s not. He thinks Bruce is weak for not taking revenge but he’s stronger.
    But that’s a lot more interesting than Jason just ignoring every moment he had with Bruce prior to his death to just force himself to believe Batman never cared about him. I accepted no problem in the Arkham Knight game because he never died and instead spent years in Arkham being tortured and brainwashed by Joker to believe that. I also loved how the game showed that he held out hope no matter how pathetic it seemed and only finally gave in when Joker showed him Batman moved on and replaced him with time after giving up on finding him. Even though he thought he was dead. But this is more interesting to me.

      The thing about the “No killing” tule of Batman is heavily rooted on his trauma in Crime Alley, but not because he’s afraid of becoming another Joe Chill if he takes a life, but because he refuses to partake on the same violence that took his parents away.
      He inadvertently took the infamous “It only takes one bad day” philosophy of Joker and spit it, he used the tragedy and the loss to fuel The Batman, to make something positive from the darkness, to become the guardian angel that could’ve protected his parents from Joe Chill.
      Bruce values human life much more than anybody else, and even if they’re not deserving he still makes the difficult decision to be compassionate, and try to help out those villains that deserve to be helped.
      It’s less about being mentally unstable or unable to control himself, which could not be any farther from the truth given Batman character, but more about upholding the ideals that he learned after being a victim of said violence, it would go against the very existence of Batman as a symbol and a hero.

    • @bonelesschickennuggets1868

      Also regarding Arkham Knight, Batman didn’t actually replaced Jason, Tim forced himself into being Batman’s side kick and he helped out trying to find Jason.
      But the news of Jason’s death apparently was something that utterly broke Bruce, he deeply mourned him to the point he sometimes called Tim Jason out of pure grief.
      Bruce ALWAYS loved Jason in that series and felt ever responsible guilty for his “death”.

    1. LOVE that people are still talking about this gem of a movie, and DC movies in general post Flashpoint
    2. I like the movies in the DC animated movie universe. Not as much as the post Flashpoint movies, but they had some good moments

    Been saying it for years, this is an amazing movie. I'd love to see this being translated into a live action movie, going a little deeper in fleshing out the characters, and respecting the original material. At this point in time, nobody needs an introduction to Batman, so they can go straight up showing people amazing stories and it would easily be one of the top DCEU movies.

    You're an amazing commentator, my guy. In my opinion, the best Batman stories truly push and test his limits as to what he will allow and what he can do about situations like this. This movie and Return of the Joker are some of the few that really got under my skin and showed me how demonic and psychopathic the Joker can be. However...if a Batman story has you thinking "Okay, Batman NEEDS to take him out at this point," the writers have got you right where they want you. And that goes for any of his villains, thought the Joker's the most prominent example. You nailed talking about that bit perfectly. Props to you!

    I love the DCAMU films, they build up Damien from a spoiled brat to an empathetic person, and Batman was also done well. Green Lantern was barely in it which is criticism, but I think they felt rushed to end the series of movies so no GL film. Shazam was barely in it but from what we saw of him it was great. Wonder Woman's solo film was meh but her whole arc with superman was good. I also loved how they explored Riddler more than the Joker, although Penguin and Two-Face were left in the dust with barely anything. Thawne was also a great character (although I think the general consensus is yes with that) Cyborg was also barely in it and they should've made 1 solo film for all of those first heroes in JL War but the Batman movies were amazing so I cant get THAT mad. Also both Superman films were done amazing. Raven and Trigon were also good I never knew I needed Trigon VS Darkseid so bad, and Raven had a nice little arc which made her into a MC
    Oh yeah and Constantine was the best god damn character in that film series.

    My favorite aspect of this movie is how it delves into the psychology of batman's no kill rule. He didn't simply say it would make him the same level as his enemies, instead he said that he would never be able to stop if he killed even once. This is masterful writing because it gives so much more depth to batman's ideology. As evil as joker is, the rest of the rogues' gallery has done similarly heinous things. If batman kills joker, what's stopping him from killing penguin, riddler, two-face and it won't stop. The darkness he grapples with everyday is held back only by his compassion for his fellow humans. Once that's broken, there is nothing else left.
