Gary Kemp, the guy at the piano, wrote the song. If you're familiar with the Whitney Houston film, The Bodyguard, Gary Kemp plays Sy in that film.

A truly smooth, beautiful reaction 🔮! True was released as the third single from Spandau Ballet's (SPAN-dow BAL-ay) 1983 album: True. It was written by Gary Kemp. It was produced by Tony Swain, Steve Jolley and Spandau Ballet. The song reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, #4 on the Hot 100, #4 on the Cash Box 100, #34 on Mainstream Rock chart and #76 on the R&B chart." The song was a huge worldwide hit, going to #1 in 21 countries. The music video was directed by Russell Mulcahy. In 2015, "True" was voted by the British public as the nation's 10th-favourite 1980s number 1 in an ITV poll. Soul Boys Of The Western World is their documentary. They no longer perform as a group. The lead singer Tony Headly still performs though.
The song's lyrics for this song were inspired by a crush Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp had on Altered Images singer and Gregory's Girl (1980) film star Clare Grogan. "I was infatuated with Clare Grogan", he told The Guardian. "I met her on Top Of The Pops and, at one point, traveled up to Scotland to have tea with her and her mum and dad. Although my feelings were unrequited and the relationship was platonic, it was enough to trigger a song".
Some phrases in the lyrics were adapted from the novel: Lolita, a copy of which Clare Grogan had given Gary Kemp. "The lyrics are full of coded messages to Clare", Kemp told The Guardian. "I'm still berated for the line: 'Take your seaside arms', but it's straight out of Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, which she had given me as a present - although in the book, it's 'seaside limbs. The line: 'With a thrill in my head and a pill on my tongue', is also a bastardisation of Nabokov".
Gary Kemp wrote of the song on his website: "I wanted to write a soul song a la Al Green or Marvin Gaye. I still remember sitting on my bed at my parents' house writing it on guitar and calling Martin (his brother and Spandau Ballet bass player) in to listen to it. It became a song about trying to write a love song to someone who didn't know your true thoughts, but how difficult it is to spell out your feelings without seeming too foolish". "We never realized the full potential of this song until we started to record it at Compass Point. On the ECD's home movie footage of Nassau you can see the moment where we're playing back the song, half finished, in the studio, and everybody, including the roadies, are singing along to it. It was at that moment that I knew we had something special".
The song: "True", has been sampled in many songs including: Queen Pen "It's True" and Nelly "'N' Dey Say", in 2004. The Professor of Rock surprised Tony Hadley in the 2017 interview by pointing out that the Backstreet Boys' song: "I Want It That Way", lifts the piano section at the end of the "True" sax solo for the melody line of its chorus. It was a No.1 US Billboard Hot 100 hit for PM Dawn in 1991 as "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss", and a Top 10 single as "You" on the US Billboard Hot 100 for R&B artist Lloyd in 2006. It has also been covered by The Black Eyed Peas, Rui da Silva, Paul Anka and other artists.
The song has been featured in some television shows including 📺: Family Guy, Single Parents, Psych, The Flash, At Home With The Braithwaites, The Simpsons, Spaced, Black Books, Spin City, Gilmore Girls, Cold Case, Modern Family, Misfits, Unforgettable, Euphoria, Ugly Betty, Master Of None, Suits, The Office, Murphy's Law, EastEnders, The King Of Queens, Veronica Mars and more.
The song has been used in many films including 📽📺: The Lost City (2022), Brandon Bott Gets Grounded: The Movie (2021), The Croods: A New Age (2020), Feast Of The Seven Fishes (2019), Bacurau (2019), SPF- 18 (2017), The Edge Of Seventeen (2016), Little Boxes (2016), Sausage Party (2016), Pixels (2015), Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011), Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), Faintheart (2008), 50 First Dates (2004), Duplex (2003), Charlie's Angels (2000), The Wedding Singer (1998), Sixteen Candles (1984) and more.
The song is such a wedding staple that Bank Of America used it in a 2022 commercial that takes place at a wedding reception.

    Spandau Ballet Info 📰:
Spandau Ballet was a New Wave band formed in Islington, London, in 1979. Inspired by the capital's post-Punk underground dance scene, they emerged at the start of the 1980s as the house band for the Blitz Kids, playing "European Dance Music" as "The Applause" for this new club culture's audience. They became one of the most successful groups of the New Romantic era of British Pop and were part of the Second British Musical Invasion of the American Billboard Top 40 in the 1980s, selling 25 million albums and having 23 hit singles worldwide. The band have had eight UK top 10 albums, including three greatest hits compilations and an album of re-recorded material. Their musical influences ranged from Punk Rock and Soul music to the American crooners Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett.
The band's classic lineup featured Gary Kemp on guitar, synthesiser and backing vocals, his brother Martin Kemp on bass, vocalist Tony Hadley, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble. Gary Kemp was also the band's songwriter. Their debut single: "To Cut A Long Story Short" reached No. 5 in the UK in 1980 and was the first of ten UK top-10 singles. The band peaked in popularity in 1983 with the album: True, as its title track reached No. 1 in the UK and the top 5 in the US. In 2011, it received a BMI award as one of the most-played songs in US history with four million airplays.[14] In 1984, they received a Brit Award for technical excellence and were the first act to be approached by Bob Geldof to join the original Band Aid lineup. In 1985, they performed at the Live Aid benefit concert at Wembley Stadium.
In 1990, the band played their last live show before a 19-year absence. In 1999, Tony Hadley, Steve Norman and Jon Keeble launched an unsuccessful case in the High Court against Gary Kemp and his Reformation Publishing Company for a share of the band's songwriting royalties.
Spandau Ballet reformed in 2009 for The Reformation Tour, a sell-out "greatest hits" world tour. In 2014, their archive only feature length documentary biopic: Soul Boys Of The Western World, was world premiered at SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. It was officially screened at the Rome, Ghent (Belgium) and NYC Doc film festivals and received its European premiere at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
In 2017, Tony Hadley left Spandau Ballet. A year later, singer and actor Ross William Wild became their new frontman for a series of European live dates and a one-off show at Eventim's Hammersmith Apollo. In May 2019, Ross William Wild tweeted that he had quit the band "to pursue my own music with my band Mercutio", while Spandau bass player Martin Kemp confirmed there were no further plans for Spandau to tour without original singer Tony Hadley. Gary Kemp has said Spandau would only continue if lead singer Tony Hadley would come back. In later interviews Gary Kemp would say, the band is finished.
Sandau Ballet does not perform live on stage as a group in 2023.

There is a documentary about the band which was released in 2014 called Soul Boys of the Western Workd. It charts their beginnings in the late 1970s through the height of their fame in the 80s and what happened after that period. Hope you catch it on You Tube.

Well that's not the official video for the song, but since they are lip-synching it, it sounds exactly like the official version. Song was a huge hit for them.
