Little bit of 80s pop trivia for you - the two guitar players are brothers and the cuter one who plays Bass (Martin) is married to the blonde backing singer from Wham (Shirley). George Michael was instrumental in getting them together. Shirley was scared to use the phone number Martin gave her so George called it and handed her the phone. They are still together.
Tony Hadley was such a beautiful, elegant man. Still is actually. One of my biggest 80s crushes.

So glad you included 'Cut A Long Story Short', it's maybe my favourite, it was very early days Spandau. They were a little darker and edgier in the beginning, but that's not to say they weren't amazing later, they were, and is Tony Hadley's voice not ridiculous, I mean, how gifted does one man need to be? ❤

My favourite band in the early Eighties, Reformation, Musclebound, The Freeze, Instinction, She Loved Like Diamomd, Lifeline, Chant No. 1, Paint Me Down, the hits were just fantastic
"True", "Gold", "Only When You Leave" and the yet unreacted to "Highly Strung" and "I'll Fly For You" are all produced by Jolley & Swain who guided Alison Moyet into her solo career after being in Yaz(oo) and also produced the GORGEOUS first Imagination tracks (did you do them already)? What talented guys! "Through The Barricades" will forever have a special place in my heart because I first heard it in December 1986 when I just had moved into my very first own flat, having just turned 22 ❤️

For me, "Only When You Leave" is my favorite Spandau Ballet song. I can listen to it over and over again, especially when I'm in a situation where I can (poorly) belt out the song with him. (Like in my car)
Through the Barricades is such a moving song if you know the background of what the song is about. So glad you did it last as well because it's different from their other big songs, but is simply beautiful.

To cut a long story was their early days and their New Romantic stage, Gold and True were their ballad/pop sound and then Only when you leave and Barricades were after that. Such great songs. I think you need to do more. Would love to suggest more great tracks for you to check out??!!
They were my ultimate fave group from the 80s. Tony Hadley has such a distinctive and iconic voice. To me he was the voice of the 80s and he’s still going strong!
And they were all gorgeous so that certainly doesn’t hurt! ❤️ my fave was bass player Martin Kemp but Tony was just so striking and so distinguished.
Spandau were masters at the grandiose, which ever mood of song they made. Of course Tony's vocals soar every time. I remember when I first heard these songs, Spandau had polish, - a kind of sparkling shine and quality of production to their work that no other band achieved at the time. I adore all the songs you have covered here, but right now Through the Barricades pulls the heartstrings for me. I hope you are doing okay PMD ? Take care. ❤

Gold is an absolute anthem, no matter the decade. The lyrics are amazing.
I was somewhat thrilled to see Tony Hadley in my local fish and chip shop a few years ago - perfectly groomed of course. Chant No1 is a good one to watch because it's filmed in a London club and shows the atmosphere just like it was then.
To Cut A Long Story transcends me back to a pottery class in school in the 80s. We always had music in the art classes. I was the spitting image of Tony Hadley back in the day and used to get mistaken for him, sadly my hair is now thinning. Through the barricades is an all-time favorite.

I really like "True" but "Gold" is my favorite Spandau Ballet song. Gorgeous song! From what I remember they started at the same time as Duran Duran as New Wave bands on the late 70s, early 80s. I recently discovered another great 80s English band, 'Prefab Sprout', that I think only had one hit in the USA and I love them and recommend them. Some of my favorite Prefab Sprout songs: "When Love Breaks Down", "Cars and Girls", "Appetite", Goodbye Lucille", "A Prisoner of the Past"
"Gold" is one of my favorite songs by Spandau Ballet. Which song I can also highly recommend: "Fight for Ourselves".
My nominees for the next 4 Spandau Ballet songs are, Instinction, Communication, Chant Number 1, and Paint Me Down.
For the 4 after that I recommend Musclebound, I'll Fly For You, She Loved Like Diamond and, Lifeline.
To Cut A Long Story Short was their first single after they had emerged from the "Post-Punk" New Romantic scene and were a guitar/synthesiser group. Also before Steve Norman discovered he could play saxophone 😉
As a fairly new Bryan Adams listener, I really enjoyed watching you hearing Bryan for the 1st time. Most of these are early Bryan 1980-2000, Last album, "So Happy it Hurts", gets us out of the doldrums of covid. Kick Ass to "These are the Moments of my Life" are wonderful. Little heard duet with Diana Krall, Feels Like Home to Me, is wonderful. Healing song. Deserves som play. A friend just told me she put it on repeat and listened for a long, long time. I listened to it a long time every time I listened to music. Looking forward to your next offering.
These were one of my favourite bands of the 80s (what a fabulous decade for music!) Through the Barricades is my absolute favourite, i havent seen your reaction to it yet but im very much looking forward to your facial expressions!

Both my late dad and my much older brother were big Spandau fans so I heard their music around the house all the time and loved them. So much so that I managed to get my brother to take me along to one of their gigs. I don't even remember how old I was, but pretty young. What I still remember is that I had a helluva good time. 😀

Tony has one of the best voices of all pop performers. His nickname was ‘the foghorn’ because his voice was so powerful. It’s a beautiful sound. He’s like me and doesn’t actually need a mic! Good technique is everything in singing.
They were proper musicians - the bass lines are v good, like Duran Duran’s were too (v complex and much harder than people realised).
And frankly, most of us had a crush on Tony Hadley. The fact he had that voice was just an added bonus for me as a singer myself..;-)
Thank you for playing Only When You Leave" I bought the single (on vinyl of course in 1984) and have worn out the grooves. The song rocks and Tony's vocals are amazing. For some reason the single was not a giant hit in the US by 1984 standards but very popular in the nightclub scene.

A lot of great music from those times dont know if they still perform they like me are pretty old now by the way when you posted this it was about 10 pm in Europe.
They were one of my first concerts attended in the 80's .... I remember Tony's voice sounded identical to album recordings, just stunning! Love the last song of this collection, particularly. Great reaction, thanks!

Seeing how much you like Spandau Ballet and the 80s sounds,i think i got a new suggestion and recommendation to you: Modern Talking. Its a German duo consisting of arranger, songwriter and producer Dieter Bohlen and singer Thomas Anders. And to make sure you get hooked right away,lets go with theyr song: Cheri Cheri Lady.
I did a security checkup on them in regards to if they get blocked or not. There are full reactions up on youtube with some of theyr other songs,but Cheri Cheri Lady might have a chance of trying to get blocked. However,i see reactors having the full reactions up by "blurring out" parts of the video. Also a heads up: You might get an instant crush here,especially on Thomas lol.
Theese guys had instant number 1 spots all over Europe in the 80s,a very underrated duo worldwide though,not all seems to be aware of them even existing. But i totally fell in love with theyr sound as a kid,and here is a funfact on how i discovered them. My grandpa and my mom were shopping together and they decided to give me a walkman and mom picked several album cassettes for me to play in the walkman. One of them was of course A-ha-Hunting High And Low,another one was Roxette- Look Sharp! (Successful Swedish duo,amazing lineup of songs) Kiss -Crazy Nights and Modern Talking -Lets Talk About Love. I had no idea who Modern Talking was at the time,but thanks to moms random pick,it became one of my favourite alltime albums. We both knew the record store owner (he is still a friend of mine,he has gone over to producing concert shows now,and i have been to several already) Im sure he might have helped out with suggestions on what i might like,but im also sure mom had the final calls on what they wanted to give me.
What i can say about Spandau Ballet though is that despite theyr many hits,i consider them one of the hidden gems of the 80s. Ask anyone that was a kid,a teenager or an adult during the 80s,and only a limited amount of them will even remember Spandau Ballet. (unless they were a massive fan of course) Common for the 80s is that so many vocalists had such a unique sound,this band no exception. I feel like nowadays everyone tries to copy eachother,and it reflects in theese talent shows such as American Idol etc,young talents try to do all the fancy stuff with theyr vocals. Even if they have the trained vocals chords for it,they simply end up overdoing it on the auditions. Back in the 80s i feel like the music and doing your own thing was in the front seat.
Besides the common 80s vibed style/sound,the actual vocals and songs sounded different.
They were awesome in concert!

"I will never not smile during a sax solo." - I mean, I get it, but some songs _are_ so sad that it might be more of a smirk than a smile, no?

Spandau Ballet were unfortunately caught behind Duran Duran for the international audience. Yet Tony Hadley was/is a vastly better singer than Simon LeBon, and Gary Kemp maturing faster as a songwriter than his Duran" counterparts.
Spandau Ballet were also very good live. Great musicianship, stage presence, and Tony's live vocals hold up beautifully.
If you like the somewhat "darker" stuff, I highly recommend giving a listen to the band Japan. They were something of "proto" new romantics. Idiosyncratic, art rock/pop, introspective. Very influential on both Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet (the former initially copied Japan's image). I'd argue Japan had the highest level of musicianship out of the new romantic (and adjacent) bands. They were led by the brooding David Sylvian who also has an amazing voice (though reached its maturity after the band split up) and a beautiful solo career, along with one of the best and most unique bassists to grace popular music, Mick Karn.
If Japan takes your interest. I'd recommend any of Quiet Life, Fall I love with me, Swing, Gentlemen take Polaroids, My New Career, Methods of Dance, Art of Parties, Still Life in mobile homes, Cantonese Boy, Night porter.

There is a lot of live sets on youtube,there is live from the 80's and live stuff from 2009 when they got back together,then there is the 2015 stuff when they went on their last tour before Tony left the band,then of course there is Tony with his own band,they are still touring to this day,they have been on tour right up to now,sure they will be out again in the new year.the thing the rest of the band soon go to know was they needed Tony but he did not need them,maybe they should have thought about that before they did what they did to him.
