Playing pool in a pub and Tony Hadley walked in ( The Singer of Spandau Ballet ). He was doing a show in my town later that night. Such a nice guy, played pool and bought people a drink. So down to earth and easy to get on with.

The first album is fantastic, near perfect. They evolved/changed their sound quickly "Chant No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On)" is dance floor filling funk (very much like Roxy Music's - love is the drug) and later more famous with Blue Eye Soul of "True"

This is much better than their later sappy song “True” which was a huge hit but so bland compared to this early synthpop new romantic classic. You should check out more Ultravox beside the one track you reacted to already (“Vienna”), try “Dancing With Tears In My Eyes” and “Reap The Wild Wind”. Also so many amazing songs from OMD like “Talking Loud and Clear”, “Secret”, “Dreaming”.

I saw Spandau Ballet in concert in the local arena in Glasgow a few years back. They played this song. During the bass breakdown section they had the bass player (Martin Kemp) in close-up on screen and all the women (and I'm sure a lot of the men) were giggling and screaming his name. He had a massive smile on his face, he seemed to love the adoration! Martin Kemp was an 80s music heartthrob and is now known as a TV actor / personality as well as a musician. It was a great concert.

Tony Hadley had a phenomenally strong voice - he still did, about 15 years ago, when I saw Spandau Ballet on tour. The only thing that I can claim vocally is that I can get the top note at the end cleanly, and hold it - I want to see your reaction to that bit of the song! Hope you don't swallow your teeth. I remember seeing this song when it was first performed on Top of the Pops in the UK at the end of 1980, and I had never seen anything remotely like the New Romantic / tartan look that they had...

Gary and Martin Kemp are brothers. I think i'm correct in saying that Gary (on guitar) was the main songwriter and Martin on base is married to "Wham" backing singer and their son Roman is a DJ in the UK. Steve Norman also plays saxophone on other songs. Spandau is the name of a prison in Germany and is also the name of a German weapon (gun) in the second world war.

The term new wave wasn't in the UK at the time this came out. It came over later form the states and lumps together a load of quite different sounds. These guys at this time were pure New Romantics...along with the likes of Duran Duran. People will tell you tnlisten to Gold or True but they're later tunes and very different. Go with Chant No 1 next.

Nope, I know it's on Wikipedia, but you can't trust it.
The first time Spandau and Ballet have been used together can't be traced before year 1980 when it was spotted on a wall of a public restroom in Berlin by poet Robert Elms, who immediately thought: a band name!
He suggested it to his friends who had a band called Gentry, and they loved it. For this Elms got to write a short poem on the sleeve of their first album, from which the album title was lifted.
BTW, the town of Spandau ( now a part of Berlin ) had a ballet there in the 1800's, as far as I can tell. Can't say if there's actually a connection.
