The pause on releasing reactions to content struck by SAG-AFTRA is still in effect. The content featured in this post, according to our research, does not fall under any of the struck categories issued by SAG.
This video was published during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, this episode of Fawlty Towers being covered here wouldn't exist. #SAGAFTRAstrike #SAGAFTRAstrong

I'm honestly not sure if they just made a mistake with the wording here or if they genuinely think that the strike of an America union of writers would effect everything ever made for tv in other countries. lets face it, it wouldn't be the dumbest thing an American has said on RUclips but pretty damn close.
Edit: i have no problem with them supporting the strike or crediting writers or not, but they are literally crediting the wrong people for the show, by name, in the text.

@@MrPopTarted after a bit of a think i should perhaps point out besides knowing the strike is a thing i have no idea the details so perhaps the "does not fall under any of the struck categories issued by SAG." implies it wasnt made by them at all. but i have no idea if they have struck everything or just selective parts so perhaps i simply missed the implication. to me that actually implies this is a SAG product but simply doesnt fall within the content that currently has legal issues. it is an implication that requires you to be familiar with the specifics to understand and either way is completely negated by the next line.

The most amazing thing about Basil is that he's based on a real man. It was an actual hotel the Pythons were staying at while filming on location (for Grail, I think), and he was such a nightmare that the entire troupe packed up and left for another hotel--except for John, who hung around to gather material.
Eric Idle had a story about how his case had been moved to an outside wall because the manager thought there might be a bomb in it. Why would there be a bomb in it? Well, they've been having trouble with staff lately.

These stories are legend. Four years before Cleese created Fawlty Towers, he tried out the characters on a show he wrote for called Doctor At Large, in an episode called No Ill Feeling. The episode features an unpleasant hotel manager and his domineering wife, and several hotel regulars who jeer the visiting young doctor. The dynamic is a bit different, with the husband more henpecked and the wife more of a rampaging buffalo.

Bigger budget, more mainstream shows and movies from Disney, Warner Brothers, etc. are ‘struck content’. Whereas, a lot of lower budget, offbeat, B-movie content from smaller/indie studios or international titles are fair game to react to. Rick seems to really enjoy that kind of stuff (The Room movie for example). He’s always been into more offbeat, unique titles that may not be as mainstream, so with the channel’s temporary pivot to content like that, Rick is gonna have a very enjoyable time I would think.

I think what makes Basil a great character, is that he's just sympathetic enough that you almost want to root for him and see him come out on top, but still unsympathetic enough for you to laugh at him, when things go wrong for him. He's the perfect balance in that regard.

  • @paulklenknyc
    @paulklenknyc Год назад +45

Cleese and Booth wrote their episodes twice as long (no. of pages) as standard sitcoms, because they didn't want to pause for laughs, but still needed to fill the allotted time per episode. And they mic'ed the stage and the house in such a way that they could keep going non-stop and not lose lines, or laughs. If you feel yourself breathless from laughter, this is the reason. You're not given much of a chance to catch your breath. The physical exhilaration from the comedy is much stronger because of this.

Fawlty Towers is often touted as one of the greatest ever British Sit-coms. Often you'll hear it lose out to shows like 'Only Fools and Horses' and more modern shows that entered the zeitgeist. But it's always a joy to see people discover just how perfectly paced, scripted, acted, and shot this show is. A perfect encapsulation of a pompous man, thawted by his own life - making it one of the most universally funny things you can ever see.

I learned that as a kid in the '70s. My parents grew up seeing chickens through their floorboards in S. GA during the Great Depression, and had clawed their way up to the middle class, exemplified by my Mother's purchase of a Cadillac El Dorado once she became successful in Real Estate. I mean-good on 'em-we stopped wearing hand-me-down clothes, and they were very house-proud, but a few years later, we visited some families who lived in huge mansions, and I noticed that they, and other people who'd come from real money tended to drive ratty old cars, like early '70s Datsun 210s, and their houses were kinda musty.
Before that, I actually thought people who lived in (crappy new) apartments were actually doing better, because they had newer carpets, recessed lights, and plumbing fixtures, and "got to eat fast food (which was only a treat for us) all the time" rather than us eating what my Mom cooked from our garden. It never occurred to me as a young teen that the reason behind that was that my friends' single mothers worked two jobs and that was really the only way for her to feed her children. No time or acreage to grow beans, peas, greens, corn, squash, watermelon, etc. in an apartment complex. A real wakeup call.

So glad you're reacting to this series!! It is the greatest sit-com of all time. To your point at 12:32 - 13:15. When writing the show John Cleese made sure that they never paused for laughs like US sitcoms. They always play through it which just means the audience never has a chance to catch their breath because they're constantly laughing. It also means the energy is carried through the scene and continuously increases until the climax.

The process of taping is called "live to tspe". They want the audience to feel it was done in real time, with no obvious edits. What helps the creative crew pull it off, is the fact that many of thd actors have roots in live theater, so mistakes and stop downs are minimal.

Actor-Inspired Element: A very subtle one - if you look closely, Melbury is actually clean-shaven in the location scenes he appears in. As with all BBC programmes of that era, location footage was filmed ahead of time, and the actor playing him needed to be clean-shaven for another role he was doing before the studio shoot. The director and John Cleese allowed this, on the grounds that it would play into Melbury's being a con artist.

John Cleese advised actors to just keep the tempo up. They were not allowed to respond to the live audience applauding.
Since their voices were picked up by microphones regardless, they kept the momentum going.
Also: the name of the hotel gets mangled each episode and the intro music goes up a semi-tone each episode.
