Apparently John Cleese based Basil Fawlty on a genuine hotel manager. When Monty Python were touring, they stayed at a hotel and the manager was so obnoxious and rude that most of them left for a different hotel. John Cleese opted to stay at the hotel just to watch the hotel manager as he was so fascinatingly awful!
Then John told comedy writer Barry Took about this awful man and Barry suggested he would make a good lead character for a comedy series. John remembered that when he was looking for a show to do with Connie.
I'm so glad you're doing Fawlty Towers. By far one of the funniest sitcoms ever made. The cast are hilarious and John Cleese is utterly hysterical as Basil Fawlty. His relationship with his wife is pure comedy gold not to mention his guests. He is his own worst enemy and it's one of the UK's comedy jewels watching him perform this role. It still has me crying with laughter all these years later.
Ahh so glad you enjoyed this, it's such a classic show. I haven't seen the show in ages myself so watching along with these :) John Cleese based the show on a horrible hotel stay he had, the owner was just like this.
Could be misremembering but I think they divorced between the 2 seasons and both felt Fawlty Towers should be left, perfect, as they wouldn't be able to recreate the same creative energy.
Good for you Josh. Fawlty Towers is practically the pinnacle of British sitcoms and still holds up 40+ years later. So excited you're doing Red Dwarf too!

This is episode 1 of series 1, "A Touch of Class". It has been segmented, here, which misses the build-up to Basil's nightmare with Lord Melbury; all of the 12 episodes are comedy gold!

Basil Fawlty was the Black Knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Written by Basil and the actress playing Polly, they were husband and wife at the time. John Cleese (Basil) stayed at a hotel in Torquay once and the owner was so bad he wrote a sitcom about him.
