      @@chvrryluvr1056 It is worth it, however pick a good school, or the apropriate school for you, I went to "easier" university and now as I finished I feel like I wasnt challenged enough there. Definetly try getting opinions of students on the schools you are thinking of going to. However I am saying this as a person from a country where education is free, so if I had to put myself in debt to do this, no way in hell I would. Just look up jobs think about them google them look up what are they paying what is it that you do there, what personality/skill requirements they have etc., research this extensively before going to uni. This is the advice I would give myself at age 15. :D Also whatever you do try as many hobbies as possible ASAP.

I mean you're hilarious, and I probably would've watched your videos here and there; but I follow you as a person and as a role model because you're right, education isn't talked about or advocated for enough on mainstream RUclips. Thank you so much for your constant stand for people to seek higher education and continue developing themselves, and also pivoting the conversation about making it more accessible to those of us for whom it is not that simple to just plop into school and go forward. As someone in the states (va) the best advice I would give high schoolers here as far as picking a degree path is go to community college if you're unsure. It's cheaper, you can do a few classes and work while deciding what you really want, and even if you take a bunch of random 100 level courses in an array of topics it will mostly transfer to the 4 year of your choice. I did NVCC and worked odd jobs while doing my gen ed classes and would not have had it any other way. All credits transferred to gmu and went towards my undergrad degree.
    However, my high school severely downplayed the community college route, and my guidance counselor practically told me I was throwing away my future. My fiance didn't even know that community college was an option until he was done with his bachelor's and wishes he had done community college so his loans wouldve been less. Heck, only way I'm able to afford my masters rn is I saved on my first 75 credits of undergrad and was mostly able to pay for them out of pocket.

    Honestly, hearing that Ben didn't finish his thesis really just helped me. I also did a grad program in Canada and was among the top of my cohort but the academic environment was incredibly toxic. I ended up getting offered the job I went into the program for (without the MA qualification) and left the program in the middle of writing my MRP because the stress and abuse were just negatively affecting my mental health and it was a financial out. I've always felt a bit weird and kind of a failure that I quit right at the end but knowing that other people did the same and feel good about that decision... it just really helped. So, thanks Ben :)

      I almost quit, just before my qualifying exam, because my advisor (inadvertently, she's a bit of a perfectionist) made it seem like this mountain of a task and I thought for sure I would just fail. It was a heartbreaking feeling at the time, because a lot of the jobs I want pretty much require the phd, and the thought of closing those doors was awful. But had no immediate job prospects, and didn't know what I would do if I DID quit. I'm glad I pushed through, and I've only got about 1.5 years left now. The dissertation will be hard, but I feel like it's not an IF, but a WHEN. But if I'd had better options, I may very well have called it quits

    The thing Ben talked about, how he thinks the system should be changed so that you learn all the basics in highshool an only do your major at university is exactly how we do it in Sweden, and I'm guessing they do the same thing in the rest of Scandinavia. We finnish "highshool" the year we turn 19, then we apply to the program we want at university, like law, medecine, teacher. The average/bachelor degree is 3 years, and some, like if you want to be a lawyer you do 4.5 years and if you want to be a doctor it take a little bit longer. I've always thought it was so strange that in the US/Canada you read things that have nothing to do with your degree, like reading math and English when your studying to become a social worker, especially considering how expensive it is (it's free in Sweden). I would be annoyed if I'm paying ridiculous amounts per year, and have my degree take a lot longer time then it should, meaning I have to pay more, because I have to take courses that have nothing to do with the field you want to work in.

      It's the same in Finland. It seems insane that people study like, high school level things in first years of university? In here, your program is what you do. I'm in history and there is only history in the program, from the very begining. A few courses of English and Swedish, and computer skills, but all from the perspectice of academic writing and my field of study.

      I think 🤔 it causes the system to want people who are more willing to work harder and longer so they know who is serious about that career. IN the US we need more doctors but the acceptance is less than the demand which is why many people think they should make requirements less but others are against that because then everyone would just apply.

    • @IngridRollema
      @IngridRollema 3 года назад +9

      Decades ago it was like that in the US. Trade options are no longer promoted unless at technical schools (and even those tend to promote college over the trades or other skills). I don't know when or why that changed, but when I was in high school (25-ish years ago) both were still promoted (college and trades). It is no longer the case, at least not nationwide.

      @@olayo53 We need more FAMILY doctors in the US, but they get paid the least. However medical school costs the same.
      That's because the reimbursement board for Medicare disproportionately represents specialists and everybody overvalues themselves and disregards others. Insurance companies set their rate based on what the government pays. So family doctors get paid the least, have the same medical school costs, and are the front line in basic medical care.
      BTW, with most insurance you don't get to go to a specialist unless referred to by a family practicioner.

      @@shawneevee7490 I have to disagree. it's never too late to go back. I've been out of high school for 10 years and I just went back. I wasted so much money in my earlier years on thing I wasn't interested in because I felt I had to. Now I've found something I'm passionate about from being in the real world. There are plenty of people who go back to college as adults. It is possible. There's plenty of part-time schooling options and learning geared towards mature students. Those who say "its too late to go back" just lack the motivation. If you're not happy with your life change it, there's always a way, you might just have to work harder. I went back to university pretty late, according to some country's standards. Back in 2010 when I graduated high school I had no idea what I wanted to do. I spent three years jumping between different jobs. I reached a point where I felt like I needed a change of scenery so I became an au pair and lived abroad for two years. When I came back to my country in 2015, I continued working with children in a preschool setting, first as a sub teacher and then I got hired at a preschool and I worked there for 2 years. But being uneducated I obviously wasn't getting paid as much as others with a degree and it was harder for me to find jobs. I went back to university in January 2018 a month before my 27 birthday. I just finished the first week of my sixth semester and I'll be graduating next June. To me, I definitely feel like university is worth it but I don't know if pressuring people to go to university as soon as they graduate high school fits everyone. Here in Sweden, it's pretty common that people go back to university at an older age.

      I agree. It's not right for everybody. I know people who felt pressured and they didn't end up graduating or if they did, they never got a job using the degree. Then they're stuck with loans they can't afford to pay off. I love that she advocates for education but really, just follow your passions. And do what makes you happy. Nobody should feel ashamed because they didn't get a college education. There are other things to be proud of.
      I don't necessarily regret my education but my disability ended up getting so bad I never applied my degree. I knew I had a disability I just didn't expect to end up on social security. With 17k in debt to loans. Everyone kept pushing me and I appreciate that but ultimately it didn't lead to a career. I'll always be a better version of myself for what I learned and how that shaped me. I'm actually glad I didn't keep going to college after my associates degree. I think people should get an education but as long as getting an education means decades of debt...I don't wanna pressure people. Some people are not cut out for that kind of learning. Everyone is so different. I have friends who have learning disabilities or other various disabilities that get in the way. And I support what they decide to do but I'd hate for someone to take the advice to go to school because they felt pushed, and turn around and resent that.

      I took a year off after high school and then I was strongly pressured by my parents and by my boyfriend at the time to go to university and to get a degree. I studied 3 years in a field I randomly picked at the last minute. I liked my classes and professors and I also was very interested in my studies but in the end I still dropped out because of mental health problems and financial problems as well. Thankfully I didn't have to pay for my university studies (in my country bachelor's degree is free in public universities). I don't regret it but I feel like it was to soon for me and it wasn't my choice. I'm now 27 and finally feeling like I know what I want to study and who I wanna become in life. I have been so stressed about my future since I was 16 and graduating from middle school (in my country we graduate high school when we are 18-19 but I went to school a year later so I graduated when I was 19. Also our high school is 3 years but we still go to school 12 years total). Anyhow, I think getting a degree is important but only if it's the right choice for you and at a right time. I know many people like myself who have dropped out or haven't never used their degree in their life so do what's right for you and don't let anyone else pressure you to doing something you don't want to do. I hope I wasn't rambling too much 😆😅

    Considering how many allergy tests you’ve had, as a person with an autoimmune disorder, you may potentially consider it isn’t an allergy. I’ve had autoimmune eye reactions similar to exactly how your eyes look here. I also separately had skin reactions. Both were thought to be allergy related; I had a skin biopsy at one point. Eventually based on many things, but particularly T cells and a hyper immune response in blood samples, it was determined that my body was attacking itself.
    Allergies are very similar in presentation because both are an autoimmune response. But allergies are the result of an external cause, autoimmune disorders are an internal cause.

      @@ViCTiMoFouRSoCieTY So, unfortunately, just like with allergies, MOST autoimmune disorders have very similar symptoms. Mine is actually pretty rare, particularly outside of the Asian population. It's very highly unlikely that someone would have mine; with that disclaimer it is Chronic Epstein-Barr Syndrome. BUT, when I had the most severe skin and eye issues, I was diagnosed with acute cutaneous Lupus. It's not the Lupus you generally hear about, and it can result in complications and other disorders, but usually resolves. Mine did resolve after almost two horrible years of skin issues. Again, not a common thing to suffer from.
      Autoimmune disorders are very frustrating. They're difficult to get diagnosed. Six years before I had the skin/eye issues was when I was finally diagnosed with EBS. The only reason I believe I got a diagnosis was due to how SEVERE my health issues were (swollen liver and spleen, long term high grade fever, rapid and extreme weight loss, etc).
      If you have a doctor and can afford to make an appointment, do so. Let the doctor know that you've had these undiagnosed and unresolved issues and you're wondering if it could be an autoimmune issue. You pay the doctor, they should care about you and listen to your concerns; if they don't, find another doctor (I had to do that). I also have to stress one more time that MANY conditions have similar symptoms, it can be easy to fall down a Web MD rabbit hole and that is not good for mental health (at least from my experience).

Anything simple that you like and can eat like granola bars, trail mix, anything is better than realizing you should have eaten 4 hours ago.

    Hi guys, fellow allergic person here. I'll mention my usual suspects and some remedies in case it helps you. For cristine, check your pillow! Some people develop allergies to down feathers in pillows/duvets, but mine are down alternative and I'll get puffy eyes if I haven't washed my pillows in a while and they're dusty. I throw mine in the washer on the hottest setting and dry on the hottest setting and that usually fixes my issue. Also, I was allergic to the scents/dyes in laundry detergent/fabric softener so I have to use scentless detergent.
    I saw the biggest difference in my allergies when got air purifiers for the house (I have a big one for the living room, and a small one for my bedroom). These could help Ben with the cat allergies too. My mom is allergic to cats (and I have 2) but was totally fine when I ran the purifier in her bedroom when she visited. They are relatively expensive ($150 USD for the smaller one, 450 for bigger one), but it's made such a huge difference to me. I've seen the cat god Jackson Galaxy recommend them for those who have cat allergies, but love and live with cats.
    Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

    Having a college experience that isn’t the ideal live in the dorms, go to class with friends, go study, go party, all that jazz has made me feel SO isolated. I ran away from an abusive home with very little money to New York City to go to school and finally be free. I’m a junior now (I should be a senior tho) and I have not made a single friend. All I do is go to work, and go to school and struggle to find time to study and sleep. I just wanna let anyone else who has to work full time and somehow manage to get school done, that there is no shame in going at your own pace. It really really hurts to watch the people I went to high school with get to have fun and graduate “on time” but I’m still here struggling and not having fun. You’ll get through it, and I’m proud of you. Other people don’t recognize the privilege they have when they don’t have to work and go to school and pay rent and internet and gas and electric and transportation bills. Acknowledge that you are not them, and that you will go on your own path. Try to make friends but if you can’t (like me lol) it’ll be okay I promise. And even if that means taking off for a little or not going back at all, all that matters is that you’re trying your best. That’s all you can ask of yourself. I believe in you💖

      Thank you very much for your comment. I cried during the podcast, because Cristine's and Ben's stories about university sounded like how I hoped things would be for me, but they weren't at all. It's nice to find someone who acknowledges that going to college may not be just be an unequivocally fun experience for some.
      I fled an abusive home and moved to another city in the Netherlands to enter university. Now, eight years later, I am still an undergraduate student and everyone I was sort of close to has now graduated from their Master's program already. It took me 4 years to make those friends, but at least I have those now and they're very important to me, especially since I've cut all ties completely with my relatives. I have burnt out 7 times and suffered countless depressions and it's just hard to convince myself that I deserve to be in uni and am not just a complete failure (as my "father"(hate that word) always used to say).
      My student debt is massive (rent and stuff is so expensive, my God) and I haven't been able to find a job, due to a combination of rather severe knee issues and extreme fear of failure. I was hoping to pursue an academic career, but I'm now starting to rethink that, because the culture at university (at least here) is so incredibly toxic. My student loan ends in a year, and I'm just terrified of becoming homeless. My life has gotten better over the years, but I still feel very lonely in my constant worries.
      I don't know you or your story, but I just wanted to say that I appreciate that you're here, sharing your kindness with everyone. Leaving your parental home in those circumstances must have been very hard for you, and I'm so sorry for everything you've had to suffer. I can't help you in any practical way, but I guess I am sending you love from across the ocean. It's very nice of you to say such kind words to strangers on the internet. Please don't forget to also say them to yourself. I wish you all the best.

I've come to terms with it. There's no shame in how long these journeys take us. I am sending all the hope and love and prosperity i can possibly muster your way. I had a history professor early on in uni who definitely had a political bias. To the point where he would give me failing grades on essays because I had a different opinion as him. This was confirmed when I looked at graded essays of my classmates and saw their horrible grammar and their two short paragraphs of information, but with a high grade and different opinion to mine. Meanwhile, I'm a communications major and was experienced in writing and speaking, always getting good grades.
    I learned the hard way very early on that there is political bias in school. Some professors more or less than others. And very very few of them are actually able to remain objective when grading.
    So what did I have to start doing? Immediately upon starting a class, I'd study the professor. Figure out how they leaned and then base my "opinions" around their opinions. Even if all I was doing was lying... Never had a problem again.

      I see where you're coming from and I agree to an extent. An online program is definitely better than nothing at all and definitely worse than a regular program. But what most people are referring to when they say "it's not worth it" is the fact that most institutions are not lowering their tuitions even though the programs are entirely online. People don't want to pay the full sum since they're not getting the full value, and I think that's pretty fair, especially when you consider the ridiculous tuitions for private colleges in America.

      There is a big difference between a well designed online program and one that was put together by a professor with low digital literacy or who doesn’t innovate their teaching. There are some professors who focus more on their research and teaching is just a means to an end to get there. I completed about half of my undergrad online and just started my masters this semester. An asynchronous professor reading the slides the book provided with no thought to supplemental materials with mandatory discussion posts for participation points honestly isn’t worth it. A class with live discussion or a professor who utilizes a variety of methods to convey information - that’s different.
      Edited to add: yes, the profs that don’t innovate aren’t great in person either, they often lecture more than teach, but online is one more barrier. The networking component is also way more important than people think as well.

    To end on a positive note, however, thank you guys for being a constant source of positivity for all of your viewers and for making my Taco Tuesdays more colourful (:

    I enjoyed the whole podcast, and as a person who enters first year of university this fall, this was very welcomed. It is unfortunate that the majority of students won't have a 'normal' experience, yet we could still take advantage of every resource that is currently available and try and use the current situation to fully focus on learning and becoming independent. Thank you ben and cristine for being you, not judgemental, approaching each topic in a neutral way and supporting education on this platform. Good luck to canadian graduates for this giveaway!

As an extrovert, I thrive in presentation situations where I can make direct eye contact with audience members and I can establish some sort of connection during the presentation. In both university and high school I gave presentations to crowds of 300+ and although I felt some nerves I generally enjoyed the presentations once they were underway. Us extroverts really do recharge in the presence of others (or at least I do,) so to me being at home doing a presentation in front of a screen would be incredibly intimidating.

    On the note of biases in higher education:
    I’m in my final year of high school in Australia, but I take extension courses. A recurring topic that stemmed from a seminar our extension history class attended with other classes and school groups from across the state, where a student from another class asked the university professors presenting the seminar why there is a “left-wing bias” in the history courses in Australian high schools. My general opinion that I’ve drawn from the many hours our class of 2 students and one teacher with a PhD in history has discussed this; you can’t truly engage with the humanities in good faith (especially history) while being right-wing or conservative. Analysing the major historical debates of the 20th/21st century like Irving v. Lipstadt or Reynolds v. Windschuttle reveal a total lack of empathy from the conservative side that almost always cherry-picks facts or totally lacks knowledge on the subject. Taking any of the senior high school history courses in Australia show how harsh class/race/gender divides often rooted in conservatism and right-wing beliefs are problematic and harmful to majority of the population. The only people I’ve encountered in these courses who aren’t left leaning by the end of the course are usually STEM bros just taking the course because it was all that was left and/or misogynistic and racist pigs who’ve taken absolutely no effort to engage with the course work or related class discussion. This is also the reason most people come out of a university degree left leaning, especially a humanities or arts degree because you’re forced to engage in politics and such in a way that acknowledges how conservatism only benefits a small minority of nobody and how problematic and harmful that is. People who come out still strongly conservative seem to never engage in these courses or discussions in good faith and therefore can’t be swayed into having any empathy for disenfranchised or disadvantaged groups of society.

    • @MM-tn5uk
      @MM-tn5uk 3 года назад +15

      “the facts have a left-wing bias” as the saying goes. But yes, you’re fully correct. Engaging with different perspectives in good faith requires a significant degree of open-mindedness, which has been politicized as being “left-wing” lmao

    • @stephp6761
      @stephp6761 3 года назад +11

      I think this is a very good point, that once you start learning a topic it often inevitably becomes "left-leaning". Sadly, I think the right wing are fully aware of this, and that is why the predominant form of attack on education is not on how it is taught, but rather to remove certain topics from the curriculum altogether.
      I am Australian as well (but older, finished high school in Syd in 2007) and for example we were taught at school about how the White Australia policy was bad and overturned in the 70s, and that Australia had taken heaps of refugees post-WWII and after Vietnam - but we hardly discussed at all more recent issues around refugees (for eg Tampa happened while I was in high school) or the real issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people in Australia.
      I hope some more current issues ARE now being discussed in schools, but certainly it was never the case when I was there - which is problematic, because students might come out of school feeling somewhat "left-leaning", but they haven't been made aware of the real issues going on right now that require action from those on the left (unless they have taken time to look into these things on their own, or their school/teachers were going beyond the curriculum). And sadly my experience has been most of those people then either just keep looking at issues saying "oh terrible" but not doing anything, or gradually become more right wing as they realise that when issues impact them directly they'd prefer things to stay as they are

      Great point. Like when college teaches global warming as something the scientific community agrees on and you see the charts and data...lol how on earth could you call it a hoax? And after you take any sociology class you realize that right wingers with an education have kind of doubled down on their horrible take. Like you mean you're just willfully ignorant and don't care about people? Or you actively vote against the best interest of the people you love, or even yourself? Ok then.

    I'm currently a senior in my university. I feel really bad for those people joining into their first years now. For me, the first year was were I met a lot of people (although now my friend circle has narrowed a lot). That year is pivotal cause you learn basic social skills and they won get to experience this. I remember when my university went online at the beginning of the year, it was nice at first cause we weren't forced to listen to lectures and we could watch it comfortably on our beds and do whatever. But it kicked us in during exams when we couldn't figure out anything. It brought upon a lot of uncertainty among students, depression, inability to leave to your country of residence (most if not all of the students are international) and lots of connection issues. That alone affected our grades negatively that the university ended upto having a pass/fail option instead of grade system. Although that helps our GPA, we're so socially deprived that it's taking a toll on our daily lives.

Now with COVID the dorms are closed and I just feel like that has been taken away from me and its really upsetting sometimes. I also just feel really bad for the freshmen because they don't get to live the full on experience like we do. Now that I think of it I have really taken that for granted, not that I didn't make the most out of it but in the sense that I thought it was just normal to do whatever we want while in university, when situations like this could happen and it made me realise that this "full on" experience is not something that's promised for sure.

And I just remember crying about not being able to spend my last year of University inside campus because I am also someone who really need a suitable environment to be motivated and be happy about what I do. It's not an excuse - I still get work done and I still study at home. But it felt really depressing and pointless and not motivating in general. Im that kind of person who thrive on having routines. So not being able to go to school was really saddening for me, especially when I'm supposed to be interning and writing my thesis. I was really considering to defer my last year, but because of the political situation in HK my family has to move out of the country to the UK so I had no other options but to continue my studies during the pandemic.

    I have a similar feeling as Cristine does with students starting university during this pandemic. During my first year of college I was broke, homeless for part of it, and working my ass off just to keep myself alive. If I had to start school during this pandemic I don’t think I would have ever gone on to post-secondary education. I didn’t have family to help me out and I was really only able to stay afloat because of government assistance and working almost full time.

He missed his practicum (which was the part he was looking forward to the most) AND many of the places he would be looking for work right now are closed. (Libraries, Schools, Archives.) I just really want to give him something special, to show him that all these years of hard work getting better wasn't for nothing. I saw on the forms that it had a few personal questions, such as 'Where do you see yourself in 10 years" and his email, etc. I want to sign him up for this as a surprise, JUST in case, but I don't want to be fraudulent and pretend that I AM him...is it acceptable for me to put my own email in, (and guesses to his future plans) but have the student loan information and all that good stuff be HIS information? Then in the off chance he DOES get picked, I can present it to him as a surprise? I'm just worried about putting his email in there and him getting any update emails and what-not that tips him off that I signed him up for this! Please let me know if you can, and thank you for giving graduates of this year such an amazing opportunity. I know whoever wins is going to have their life changed by this, and its all because of the generosity between you two. Thanks!

    I’m a senior in my undergraduate psychology program and am considering pursuing a PhD in the future. The work and dedication that a PhD requires is super daunting, and I often struggle with imposter syndrome. I often wonder if I have the work ethic and tenacity to complete the program. It’s super inspiring to hear your story and learn about the practical impact your work has. I love hearing about the experiences of women in science because it reminds me that I’m capable, despite my doubts. I’m also a research assistant in two labs where I work under a couple very strong women, and it is so encouraging to see them thrive. Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring me Christine! It’s such a special thing to see on the internet.

      PhD is really tough. But, you don’t necessarily have to be super “smart” to get one - you need sheer grit & persistence, in the face of problems / set backs. You must find a supervisor you get on well with and who will fully support you, and pursue a research topic you really love and won’t get bored of. I would encourage you to talk to PhD students in the school you’re thinking of applying to to hear about their experiences!

    Hi! Your local higher education professional here. The different between “college” and “university” in the states is almost a moot point these days. It used to mean public vs. private or small liberal arts vs. large research institution, but now many smaller and private schools have also achieved university status. Many schools are making the switch (my undergrad, Assumption University, just did it) and essentially it’s because they now have smaller “schools” or “colleges” within the university. School of business, school of medicine, school of liberal arts etc. So...long story short, in the states there’s basically no difference now as well but many institutions are making the switch to all being “university” in order to have a more global mindset.

      I believe they said they are Canadian which means college and university are two very different things. In Canada colleges are 2-3 years diploma programs at applied arts and technology schools, universities only have bachelor, masters and doctorate programs.

      In Argentina we have Universities and then "inside" the structure we have Faculties. So, for example, I go to the Universidad del Museo Social Argentino (University of Argentine Social Museum), but I study in the Facultad de Lenguas Modernas (Faculty/Department of Modern Languages). Most citizens don't know the difference and they mix them up, but there is a slight difference that makes me have to say "I go to University" whereas my sister has to say faculty.

    I needed this.
    It's 1:45am Wednesday and I am an RA at my school and I am sitting at a desk in the dark (we have desk duty where we monitor people coming in and if they have a mask) and I am listening to this podcast. And hearing the realities of school in such a safe way right now is helping me. I am tearing out my hair doing my psych homework and hearing her say do this for you cause you can only be doing this for you in grad school is helping me remind myself why I am getting my degree. I get so lost in the small stuff, the information not being conveyed that this podcast is what I needed right now refocus on a big picture. And you, always pushing education in a safe, positive, and non hateful way for those on channel I can't thank you enough. You've been my encouragenent through high school due credit anatomy and physiology, my freshman now sophomore year of high school. You have kept my life in perspective Cristine. Thank you.

    I'm an accounting professor with my PhD, so I'm really appreciating the love, haha! You CAN do your PhD in business with no prior experience in business. In fact, most PhD's in business do not have a business undergrad. I feel like the business school is a little more practically minded and less esoteric than something like sociology tends to be. Business research is similar to other types of research, except that it usually has to have some type of business function. So we study things like consumer ethics, the stock market, and how organizations behave. However, a MBA is a great way to get an understanding of actual business practices such as reading financial statements, developing a marketing plan, and managing employees. Anyways, those are my thoughts. I appreciate your support for education.

    Honestly, I really love the fact that you all are talking about college/university openly and honestly. After getting my masters degree almost ten years ago, I have had mixed feelings about my education. Like, I definitely don’t regret sacrificing that much of my life, but it’s hard now because my job ultimately doesn’t value my degree. It feels a bit like a catch-22 situation and I don’t ever know how to explain that to students who ask me about it.

    In Canada, there's a difference between university and college though. University is more lectures and writing papers, while college is more hands on. University also takes longer and costs more while college is shorter (2-3 years) and cheaper.

      In the US the two are interchangeable. I went to a university and in conversation I would say I was a college student. College/university are the same here. We have community colleges which are also called junior college and they offer two year degrees or transfer credits. We also have trade schools, and vocational schools but no one here calls that college. A person going to beauty school would not call themselves a college student.

    • @Freya_Blue

      @@TamairaElise Yes, in the US the words college and university are used interchangeably by the general population, but there is an actual difference in requirements for why an institution can hold the title of "university" vs "college"

    • @TamairaElise
      @TamairaElise 3 года назад

      @@Freya_Blue Do you know what those requirements are? I know no one would call a community college a university, so I guess the two aren't quite interchangeable. It's more so that people call universities colleges, than the other way around. The community college that I went to offered a bachelors program though, so I'm curious what the requirement is to be a university. I initially thought maybe just the offering of a four year degree, but my community college would be an exception to that.

    • @Zhishan929
      @Zhishan929 3 года назад

      Tamaira Paleski in the us, in simplest form, universities have more than one campus, while colleges have one. For example university of Georgia (cuz I live in Georgia) is a university because they are scattered around Atlanta. University of California is a university because you can choose to go to a different campus. I go to university of west Georgia, and before the other campuses, it was called west Georgia college.
      Now community college is very easy to get into, you need your high school transcript, diploma, and your sat/act scores (don't need to be high). You usually come here to get your core out of the way, figure out what you want to do for a cheaper price.
      University really depends, but you need the transcript, high school GPA, diploma, recommendation letters, and your sat/act scores need to be higher than their requirements. In university, you typically stay the full 4 years
      Every college and university is different due to standard requirement, but this is how I view it.

    Whoop! Had to get up early today, and I was rewarded with Taco Tuesday. Worth it.
    On the topic of the video, I graduated from college almost 3 years ago, and I struggled with truly liking college and seeing its worth. For years I hated that I went to college and "wasted" 6 years of my life (insert eye roll here). I know I know. I sounded awful. 2020 is what made me finally realize that I'm glad I went to college. I'm proud that I'm a first generation graduate. I originally did it for my family, and now I'm really glad I did it for me. Ok sappy times over haha
    Edit: Just reading all of the early comments. I think I started the serious, sappy response too early. Everyone's all "yeaahhh Taco Tuesday!", and I'm like "let me start the therapy session" hahaha!

    I wanted to be a psychiatrist and in india there's a huge deal about the entrance tests for med school right after high school. Anyway, I spent almost 4 years studying all throughout high school+a drop year trying to get into med school. And when I finally did, I realised that that wasn't what I wanted to do as a career(even though I love the subject). I also didn't want to spend potentially 900 thousand dollars trying to earn that degree.
    So cut to me being in my final year of undergraduate and I'm majoring in psychology, journalism and english. Really goes to show that life always throws a curve ball
