You don't get invited to college parties, you just show up and hope the host doesn't realize they've never met you

    • @olivialemaire2512
      @olivialemaire2512 7 лет назад +1657

I did get kicked out of a party once because it was a varsity party and my friend who told me to come didn't mention that, but I arrived before he did with a few other friends who were also not athletes so we all got asked to leave. It didn't seem like it would be a fun party anyways. Very dark and no room to move, but not in a good way like at a club. It was just packed.

    • @olivialemaire2512

I mean, I got pretty lucky the night I moved into res and I've just been kinda hanging out with the same people for 2 years now.

I don't even remember. The first party-related memory I have I when my friend said she heard about a party, poured a bunch of shots for the two of us, and then realized she couldn't so many herself so I ended up doing like 7 shots and somehow even though we never found the party I ended up taking care of drunk people. I think it was the same week, but there was another night after where I hadn't had any alcohol and ended up taking care of her and some other guy while they were both drunk (again without finding the party) and I ended up breaking my foot after the guy disappeared while I was bringing her up to her room. He was fucked so I was freaking out looking for him, running down the stairs, and these two girls said to be careful which made me trip immediately, but then I didn't even go to get my foot X-rayed for 6 days because I stopped hurting after like 20 seconds. I only went because the swelling kept getting worse instead of getting better. Basically I spent my first month of college with an air cast on my foot. Getting to class when I was running late was never fun because most of my classes were on the 4th floor and I had no idea where the elevators were. I tripped a lot.

It's been two years since then. Plenty of successful parties since. Last week I got a free slice of pizza so that was cool. I was pretty drunk so all I really remember is that some random people who showed up said it was Tiki night. One of them had pineapple glasses. He seemed pretty cool.

Dang I've only ever broken small bones. In grade 8 I broke my finger playing basketball and I kinda just looked at my friend and was like "I think I broke my finger". I went to the office to call my mom and it only took her a few minutes to get to the school but my finger was so swollen already. The doctor at the clinic said it's the worst broken finger she'd ever seen. I had to wear this splint that got very sweaty all the time and smelled so bad almost to the end of the school year. The knuckle I broke healed kinda twisted and it's on my dominant hand so writing has just been weird ever since.

Went back thanks to a family lawyer, would go on to graduate with a degree in finance top 3% of my class in 2018 with 5 honors.

i have something to add, i finished high school with basic marks, i passed all grades with a c, and some with a's and b's. such a science, but for college they wanted a bit more from me, so said maybe try other courses, shit i didnt want. so then i was essentially stuck on a 2 year course that i didnt want to do, i wont lie, i was lazy, complaicant, i didnt take it serious, i goofed off most of the time and just messed around, eventually i dropped 2 courses (you take 4-5 total in college in the UK) so i only had a 2 course college experience for another year, i did even worse, the lack of incentive to go take more lessons made me even more lazy to go to the ones i actually had to, this mixed with a teacher who was fun and didnt care too much, and surrounded by students who didnt even want to be here also (it was forensic science, interesting, but incredibly dull due to assessent work, and low rewards for getting into uni) i mentioned multiple times to the head i wanted to do maths, and physics. he made a deal, if i completed the years course and passed, i could come back and take the courses, this made me happy and motivated for a while, but i guess being lazy and ignorant came second nature, i never finished that year. so fast forwards 6 months, i wanted to go back into college, i was unable to attend my last one as i was kicked out for not finishing my course. so i went to a different one, this time giving up on my hopes of going into physics. i took game design, boy was that the stupidest mistake to make in my situation, i was surrounded by people who wanted to game all day, haha, i wont lie it was incredibly fun, but easy, too easy really, i had doubts that this course would lead no where, so i dropped out after 3 months in hopes of joining the army, a last resort sorta thing, i felt hopeless. so anyway i didnt join the army, and got enrolled onto a ''drop out'' course, for people who didnt go to college, and were fresh from high school, i wasted so much time here too, many failed attempts to gain an apprenticship later, fast forward 7 more months i land a job, minimal wage, carpentry stuff, making gates. and this is the main point i wanted to make, when you work from 8am, to 5pm, doing something physically demanding, and something you dont enjoy, for little to no money after tax and bills, those long hours in college seem like fucking heaven. never did my actions become more apparent when i started working full time, i dont like the job, and i know for sure its not something i want to persue. its not awful, i work with friends, but i dont feel accomplished, like im being the best i can be, its making me more and more depressed each day. so currently um buying online courses, putting in the hours after work, and finally going off to uni to study engineering. i wont let fear dictate my choices, if im too stupid to succeed, then im too stupid, but at least i know i tried. so thats my addition, dont let long hours in school deter you, it could be worse. you could be doing something you hate, that drains you, makes you depressed, for little to no personal, or financial gain. never have i, or hope to again ,feel this trapped, it eats away at your mind.

Picked a different university closer to home. Currently in 3rd year of my current program in law, and still questioning if I made the right decision. Things I wish I knew before signing up for Uni:
    1. Always have some fundamental knowledge in the course subjects beforehand. Learn the key terms, jargon and basic concepts of the subjects that you will be taking before the course starts. If you only start learning when the course starts, too late.
    2. Memorizing helps you now, but understanding helps you forever. Same goes for assignments, where doing the assignment on your own instead of "taking shortcuts" will help you vastly in the long run. You will see the effects during the Final Year Project and during your first (and subsequent) jobs.
    3. Get as many aspects of your life handled before starting the course. When the assignments start flooding in, you will not have the time (or energy) to find a new place to stay because your current roommate is too noisy.
    4. Do not waste time during your Uni years. When you step into the working world, the luxury of time will be gone. You will have not much time and energy left to improve while working 40 hours a week (compared to Uni life).
    5. Build a portfolio if possible during Uni years. It is a ticket to being hired by your future employer.
    6. Study a technical field which has job market demand. Remember that people will pay you based on demand, not necessarily on what you like to do.
    7. Uni life is like unlimited stream of junk food. You are given time and freedom to do things. But every single moment that you spent away will either build or ruin your future. Discipline yourself even though parents are not there to tell you so. You will reap the rewards in your working life.

@@BigUriel Exactly like it should be. For my last year of highschool, since I made the wrong decision (did a whole year of economics just to realize I like engineering better, and my economics title didn't allow me to sign up for an unrelated career), I needed another diploma to get into college. So I decided to take the physics, chemistry and "math II" (a special maths course for engineering) exams, thus obtaining the required highschool diploma. I did that in 20 days without any formal teaching, just me and a couple of books. I can't imagine what it would have been like to wait a whole year (or even six months) to get into college just because of some stupid rule forcing me to attend X number of classes in order to take an exam. I understand that many people actually need to take a year-long course and take notes every single class, but many others don't and they shouldn't be punished because of it.

A wise friend of mine gave me the following advice: There are no good classes, only good professors. If you'd like your life to be degraded into a heaping pile of garbage, self-loathing, and despair then I highly recommend selecting professors with low online ratings. All my favorite classes have been classes where the professor was actually a decent human being, and not an embodiment of Satan in the academic form.

I'm an engineer and it sucks sometimes making a B in a class when I know these nerds are getting 125 because of the bonus points on the test....... long pause..... but I also know what these guys aren't good at.... communication, and social engineering is the best kind of engineering out there so anyone looking to be an engineer, don't be a nerd, it actually will most definitely NOT get you hired, especially management positions.

I took an intro CS course my first semester, and it was pretty well-balanced sex-wise. About half girls and half guys. I think the ratio really gets lopsided in more advanced junior and senior year CS courses. One of the major problems I had in college was coping with not being one of the best. I always liked physics and math, but I wasn't one of the best in my college classes, whereas in highschool, I was the one everyone would come to for help. I was just slightly above average in those classes. The only thing that kind-of saved my self-esteem was being one of the best in my com sci class, and that was probably because I devoted a lot of time to it outside of lecture. I made it my hobby. I gave myself mini-projects in java that I would just code for myself. Moral of the story, if you want to be amazing at something, make it your passion.

weird. you would think after a gender transformation like that, you'd be around a lot more women.

FireStormHR I understood from your comment that you had become a woman, I thought that was weirdly brought up. It was only minutes after turning off my phone that I realized what you actually had meant... I therefore had to find this comment again

My most honest advice is try to start working on your mental (and physical) health before you start uni. I'm about half way through my degree. I've dealt with what I now know is described as major depression on my own for the last 2 and a half years, and now 4 months after starting counselling and meds, I'm beginning to feel a bit better. I can't help but feel so stupid that I did nothing sooner.

Good for you man, I've really being struggling with my mental health, I feel like my sanity is degrading each day, I'm studying something that I found out not only I don't like but also I'm not good at, I regret not going for what I exceed at , I have no social life no friends, so I'm wondering am I wasting time or am I just making excuses for my laziness ?
I really want it to end , I just don't see where my future is and I don't see how other people can deal with it , maybe I'm just weak minded.
Sorry for wasting your time if you're reading this and rambling about my self, I've been doing this for quite some time but I really don't want to look like a victim or someone pathetic who looks for validation from the sympathy of others.

@@alku6252 It will feel really awkward and uncomfortable but you'd be amazed how many people want to help you. Maybe just start by talking to a friend, or even someone like a tutor/teacher who has a professional relationship. Obviously it's really tough but you have to remember that this is all extremely common and there always is potential for you to feel better. Stay strong.
If you manage to work on your health and work towards catching up with college (Get some health based extensions - health comes first), you'll hopefully be able to start getting at least a little bit of satisfaction out of your degree. I find it can be really hard to enjoy anything and feel good at anything when your mind is in a bad place. It's going to take time but the first step is to talk to someone.

@@TheJALOBE sorry, l didn't want you to feel obliged to respond to my comment , I've been really lost this last few weeks ,but I'm okay compared to what some people go through I don't have the right to complain and I've been attending therapy sessions to help me out, what I'm really terrified of is not failure or embarrassment, I'm afraid of wasting time on these failures.
Either way thank you very much for your comment, it feels sometimes as no one listens and it's not like I want people to help or take pity on me, I just need someone to talk to so I sort out my thoughts (the therapist isn't much help) but thanks for the advice I think I'll draw inspiration from what you said and try finding a solution to the problem.
      Thanks

University is tough. This video speaks the truth and I think all high school leavers should watch it. Also, you don't have to be smart to get into university or survive in university. Hard work trumps all and as long as you're studying throughout the semester, then it'll be much easier to relearn the content once you come back to it during the pre-finals stuvac period. Also, leave your ego at the door. You may have been top of your class in high school but in uni, you'll be surrounded by many students that were also at the top of their class (I'm mainly talking about globally ranked universities and I feel like that's where everyone should go).

2:41 Best part. I've actually watched many of your videos, but this is the one that made me sub. I've been in college for 4 years and I'm almost half way done. Not university, but community college
