Hey there, it’s Ben. I’ve seen a few comments about my argument that makeup is "superficial" so I just wanted to clarify that I don’t think that the people who are interested in makeup are necessarily shallow or superficial. I can appreciate Cristine’s perspective that for many people makeup is primarily about artistic expression. At the same time, I do think there is something uniquely negative, dramatic, and superficial about the online beauty community and I was just reaching for a possible explanation. It was ignorant of me not to consider that many women have a complex relationship with makeup and societal expectations/standards of beauty. I think that is a conversation worth having and maybe one we can spend more time on in the future.
Thanks, Ben! I understand what you were trying to say in the podcast and I agree, but I’ve realized that we’re taught early on the societal and cultural norms that create the circumstances where that superficial aspect is infused into our everyday lives, at least for women,and in order to break away from that I find that people try to channel their creative side or to push those boundaries because it’s the only way we can. Like it took me a bit to accept that Cristine’s nails would be different on each hand, and I would just sit here like why does it bother me? They always look awesome, but in my head I was just like oh...that’s the whole idea that I’ve been indoctrinated with oh how you’re nails are “supposed to look”.

Yes! This was such a great question. Sometimes I feel like people are satisfied with a death sentence at some point. The whole mob reacting to people that "should" be cancelled reminds me of witchhunts and the gory glee of watching people being publicly killed.

I think it depends on if a influancer is abusing their platform. Shane abused his platform and put his audience in danger. what i'm hoping for with shane is for him to own up to EVERYTHING. not to just delete the content. but to hold himself completely accountable.
he mentioned the clip with his cousin. but has not brought up swapping gum with a 12 year old. or making out with dogs.

Real quick, I wanted to talk about the glass escalator in regards to the beauty community. The glass escalator is when men rise to the top easily in women dominanated fields, for example: men becoming principals quicker and easier than women in schools.
I feel like we generally treat men and women differently but especially when it's in these kinds of situations which is why I think the men in the beauty community rise so fast and get away with so much. Unfortunately, I think there's not much we can do individually but just recognize what is happening

This! I played a lot of "Name a popular female fashion designer or brand founder" with people I meet because fashion is sooo dominated by women. And yeah, people struggle, eventually remember Coco Chanel, and then say "Well maybe they should just work harder". Smh
As someone with a dance background (another female dominated industry) I feel like I can kind of explain this phenomenon. In my experience men are elevated in female dominated industries in an attempt to encourage MORE men to go into the field to create diversity. This leads to a type of favoritism of men in the industries, thus propelling them into the upper level positions. Ex: we want to see more boys in beauty so we all subscribe to and support every male that enters the field to encourage them to keep going and other boys to join. This quickly pushes them to the top over females that may be more skilled or "qualified". The kicker is that male dominated industries don't do the same thing. They make women claw their way to the top and prove that they have the skills and qualifications to be there. Therefore we end up with men at the top of every field whether it's male or female dominated.
Samantha Ravndahl made a video about the outside perception of the beauty community’s toxicity (as a response to Shane), and talked at length about the elevation of men within the industry and how even though it’s demographically massively female, the majority of execs are white straight men. Highly recommend her vid!

I think a large part of why the fans grasped so hard onto bananas and taxes was because we knew so little about Ben in the early days. Thus, every little fact we learned (or assumed) became a fundamental pillar of Ben
That's less true these days, but you guys both keep a private life which means that the parts of your lives that y'all share publicly are going to be zeroed in on and amplified.

Like the other repliers, I too didn't think of it this way and was trying to make sense of it. The only thought I could think of is that the 'bananas' and 'taxes' are a way people build their branding on them, like having a niche, by keep repeating one matter over and over. That way, people associate you with what you keep repeating because you planted that in their head so much. I'm definitely not saying that those were the intentions of Cristine and Ben, but that was the only theory in my head.

That is an interesting and valid theory. I'd like to add on that there's nothing wrong with having a private life and not sharing every detail about oneself publicly. There's nothing to blame there, and the only problem I would see is someone not accepting that, or insisting what's "canon" to the person.

I definitely feel like I have learned a lot more about compassion and empathy and learning from different opinions after their podcasts and especially the AITA ones 😂 And I feel like I know how to ask questions that are touchy without being confrontational so that I can actually learn! I wonder if they know how much they truly impact people for the better 💖
Men in the beauty community is similar to men in any gendered career. Male nurses, librarians, teachers, are often praised for being involved in a heavily female space and rewarded for it. And in male spaces, women are still looked down on and undervalued
But that is just not true. Men in trationally feminine jobs get a lot of shit both from men and women.
Halflinging I would say that it depends on the field. Male nurses are more likely to be looked down on than male teachers, who generally raise through the ranks and become principals a lot easier than women.
@@lbwnova6654 True! It honestly is just disheartening that people talk about experiences they don't know anything about. Male nurses get harassed so much because they are seen as less masculine. Male nannies are not trusted and they are seen as suspicious.
Comments like these invalidate male experiences of sexism. Of which there are many.
And many women are the ones rewarding those men.
We actually talked about this in one of my library science classes. While the library field is largely female, most leadership positions are held by men. Thankfully, our community is working on creating a more diverse, female-driven workforce.

I agree with absolutely everything Ben said about Jenna. I'd just like to add that although I applaud and respect that she wants to take responsibility for what she did wrong, you can't be so obsessed and affected by what people say on the internet. She said that she doesn't want to offend anyone but there are millions of people who watch her videos. It's impossible to please everyone. You can be the sweetest and juiciest peach in the world, but you'll always find someone who doesn't like peaches. It's great to take people's opinions into account, but it comes a time when you have to do your own thing, trust your audience and ignore the trolls.

I respect Jenna a lot, but we need to acknowledge that not having bad intentions doesn't excuse racist comments and actions. Taking responsibility for racism isn't giving in to the trolls, it's being a responsible adult.

I grew up with Jenna Marbles. I started watching her when I was 14. Now I'm in my early 20s. She kept me laughing during some incredibly difficult times, and I will forever be thankful for every single smile she ever gave me. I hope that now, with everything said and now, she can finally exhale. I hope she can be happy again.
It’s interesting that even when you guys think the main channel are “the entertainment” videos and these “real videos that show us who you are” but I’ve never gave a shit about nails yet here I’ve been for the past 4 or so years. That’s because you managed to put “mini real talks” in your main channel videos that made me a fan. This podcast is a blessing so thank you.
The first time Cristine showed up as a recommendation, I watched a few videos and thought 'nah' but then I caught a couple more thoughtful bits, and it made me feel like I was back in college talking to really thoughtful people, and I was hooked.
I can’t agree more. I paint my nails black and dark red and that’s it and don’t really care for nail art and I’ve been following Christine since 2015? I also feel whenever they say something serious it just comes from a very knowledgeable person who actually spends time researching topics and stuff. Id be thrilled to have a conversation with either Christine or Ben, not only because of the intellectual part but because they do really seem like nice people and they’re funny!
For me, the "entertainment channel" was more like a slumber party: quirky, funny, and moments of depth. Like how me and my friends would be twenty plus years ago.
I think to say in the kindest way possible to explain Ben’s question about brown and black outrage with past racism/bigoted behavior (me as a black woman), it might help to consider a mixture of a bigger picture/community and individual experience. Even though I came from a privileged black family, I have a college degree, and whatever, it is hard to explain that some/many black & brown people experience racism on a daily basis while others may experience it is a collection of events over a long period of time. Especially in school environments and some work environments, there is no system/support to confront or change how regular bigotry can be in those places. Most normal people agree that cancel culture has gotten out of hand and lost meaning. But, I think people who aren’t black & brown struggle to imagine how often we may hear that kind of language & that it can be overwhelming & like Cristine seemed to imply, there are rarely outlets to safely express any emotion about it. I was called the n word repeatedly at my rich white Catholic schools from 2nd grade to 12th. I’m not a ‘quiet’ person in order to make myself seem ‘better’ than other black people, but because I don’t feel safe expressing any emotion in certain spaces. Yes, cancel culture is getting out of hand and hits the strangest situations hardest. But, maybe Ben can understand the intensity as a bottle exploding after building pressure. Also, a lot of ppl in black & brown spaces are discussing healthier ways of expressing this kind of disappointment and anger, but in our own spaces. I think at the end of the day, it would hurt anyone if someone who disrespects a core aspect of their identity is deemed an aspiration for all of society/or just one industry to value. The solution? Who knows, there will probably just be waves of time mob mentality is more or less intense. Ironically, sometimes the loudest voices during ‘cancelling’ isn’t always the group of those offended, but those who consider themselves allies

I think it's interesting that none of the current outrage has spilled over on Mark Wahlberg, who assaulted an old Chinese man back when Mark may have been juiced, or Mel Gibson whose drunken misogyny is well known. These things are materially worse than anything Jenna Marbles has done.
Your observation in the last sentence is on point. So many times I've seen people jumping on the bandwagon before listening and amplifying the voice of the people who were the prime victims. I thought that ben refered to those people when he said that people participate in those "cancel parties" just for the excitement it procures them.

All your points were very well made and I agree with all of them.
I am Colombian and my Husband is Dominican. We’ve always heard of these scenarios where people are racist. However, we have never really experienced anything because we lived in Miami. Miami is a very Hispanic-centric area and is highly populated by middle class Hispanics, so we felt relatively comfortable. It wasn’t until we moved higher north in Florida that we REALLY experienced racism. My Husband worked at a bank where the lobby was closed due to C19, so he had to use the teller camera to communicate with customers. The primary population in the area were white (slightly supremacist) customers. On many occasions, my husband would turn the camera on to help customers and would get cussed out by these white men, without provocation. He described it as very irrational hatred towards him. I would ask if maybe they had a difficult day and maybe were taking it out on him. However, his coworker (white, blonde, blue eyes, “all American” man) would take care of these SAME customers, and it was like they were completely different people. With his coworker, they would be polite and even CRACK jokes and smile.
When these things happen in such a diverse state as FLORIDA, I can’t imagine others states/places.

As someone from the book community, there is a lot of book drama. Like a lot. So I feel other communities are just much smaller so the drama isn't as well known or talked about outside of the community. But with beauty being so mainstream and just the amount of people involved in beauty inside and outside the internet, it becomes more talked about.
And the amount of money involved also probably leads to some drama.
It also doesn’t help that people assume they’re really unproblematic because they’re “just books” but it’s really competitive. And the amount of people that use it as a gateway to get published can make it really problematic.

and so many aspiring authors which isn't inherently an issue, but when shitty books by larger booktubers get published and heavily promoted over better written novels by marginalized creators it become an issue. I also feel like it doesn't matter what niche part of the internet you're from the way black and brown content creators are treated is always an issue. Booktube tries to hide it with all the "diverse" tbrs and recommendations but it's still very much there.
I love how, when choosing a bubble to quarantine with, Cristine goes to her friends and Ben goes directly to hummus

I think the male beauty youtubers conflict parallels the conflict Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell had. As a minority in the same industry, rather than being empowered by each other, each feels threatened by the existence of the other.

Regarding cancel culture: I can highly recommend the book “so you‘be been publicly shamed” by Jon Ronson which explores this very thoroughly.

Yeah it’s an interesting read! However (and maybe because I’m only 19) it already feels a little dated to me with how fast social media has grown again in the last 2/3 years- there’s very established online presences now such as Jeffree Star or (until recently) Jenna Marbles and I feel like Twitter culture has bridged the gap between ‘us’ and ‘them’ when it comes to famous people thus you can rally hundreds of thousands to shut down someone who’s entire career started and ended online, compared to being cancelled online but having no pre existing fame as such? Does that make sense, it’s 1am as I type this haha

I love the 'real' simply. As someone in their mid to end twenties it is refreshing to listen to something so close to everyday conversations i would have with friends. It feels like I have a companion by my side.
As someone a similar age, I feel the same way. Even more so because Ben and my husband are so similar.

Something I've been thinking about since watching this yesterday, the knee-jerk reaction of thinking the beauty space is about vanity, and the fact that male influencers are at the top of the pyramid of it are both sides of the same misogynistic coin. Compare it to my other passion, genre fiction - there's a strong cultural bias that romance fiction is a big joke, because it's by and for women, but no one denigrates mystery/thriller pop fiction the same way despite being written at the same level. Pick any equally "fluffy" male-driven interest (I don't know, car detailing maybe? model building?) and see if you immediately think about it the same way.

I would like to add something the beauty community talk.. I agree the beauty community is pretty toxic, although I would say, a huge part of toxicity comes from not the ongoing drama that we witness, but moreso by the general idea of beauty that the beauty gurus like to portray, subconsciously. Like for example, literally every beauty influencer lining their lips making it look thicker, contouring to give definition to their face, making it look more chiseled,etc. As a 16 year old girl these remarks of influencers make me question my face and body..." Are my lips too thin? Is my face too chubby?"
I think another aspect is that there is so much money involved in beauty and make up. These people often are not friends or collegues but rather competitors! (At least the really big ones who make most of their money theough their own products)
The thought of a stranger without a mask trying to hug me right now is honestly terrifying. I mean, moreso than usual...

On the beauty guru commentary: I would like to note that makeup is a primarily female hobby. And in many cases, female hobbies have to justify themselves much more than male hobbies on the internet. Heck, look at the recent scandals in video game streaming like the Yogscast, where they had to throw out members for sexual harassment and outright pedophilia! Thanks for touching on Jenna. She's an empath and so incredibly kind. She's the person, i imagine, who tries to include everyone and makes the loneliest person feel important. Shes SO incredibly personable, and so intentional with what she put out in the world.. i feel that she's burnt out. On top of this. 10 years is a LONG time. I was, and still am upset about it, but she deserves a walk in the sunset. Happily. Shes so different from 10-12 years ago. She deserves this break and she handled it the BEST way possible.

I agree with you on JS not being particularly talented, but he does have experience in using hundreds of products and in that he understands what makes or break a product. I definitely thinks he takes advantage of this by making reviews or 'vs' vids

I think something that is important to notice about the beauty community is that a lot of the drama and scandals are due to the fact that the beauty gurus have makeup brands of their own, therefore, some of them see eachother as “competitors”, which could be an incentive to try and destroy someone’s image maybe.

I think the toxicity in the beauty community doesn’t come from makeup being inherently superficial. Marketing can be dishonest, so it takes a certain kind of person to be super successful in marketing their product in such an over saturated market. I’ve noticed the “least problematic people” tend to just focus being authentic with their audience, rather than constructing a sellable narrative to their audience.

I really enjoy this podcast and appreciate the level of your concern about putting things in words the best way possible. Your conversations are very intelligent and educational and honest. However, sometimes I get frustrated with and concerned by this type of kinda-joke-kinda-serious lines Ben allows himself to add to discussion that are quite controversial and need to be properly elaborated and explained. This happened with me a few times already. I remember Ben’s line about him not having a very high opinion of religious people. This time he made a very strong and taking-into-account-one-perspective-only statement about people getting into makeup out of superficial standards. I am not by any means personally offended by those types of statements and not trying to shame Ben or Cristine for being wrong or narrow-minded people (they are definitely not). I just want to point to these types of phrases that I believe Ben could find a better wording for and I ask for more attention, on his part especially. You both have been successfully demonstrating us your skill to take different points of view into account but sometimes I feel something is being missed. It’s inevitable in any serious topic of course but I mean situations when it seems to happen out of insensitivity and not out of lack of knowledge. I mostly agree with Ben’s and Cristine’s ways of approaching the topics, but these little things can be confusing. Again, I have a huge respect for both of you and do really enjoy this podcast! Just want to make sure that our discussion between mature people doesn’t turn into something less rationally based and more emotionally driven.

I dunno about the work/home separation, I'm 22 and I work as a data entry clerk. I've been working from home since late March and I am so much more comfortable working from home than I have ever working on site. I'm definitely an introvert and don't always need that social interaction, not to mention I have more control over the overall environment in my house (like the lighting, my computer, my chair, the temperature, etc).
I think the work/home divide starts to blur when you don't have a designated space for work. I have my work desk in the dining room, and I hardly exist in the dining room in my home life. The real issue with people that have a hard time dividing work and home life working from home is that not a lot of people have the space to have a designated work area. Which of course isn't always their fault.
Ben should do a hummus bath! That is the only way I can think of for hummus to be a deductible business expense.

The last year or so of Jenna's content was a ray of light in my week. I never could watch a full video or subscribe back in 2013, but her recent content was so pure and self-targeted that I'm happy she's doing what she wants to do.
So you guys focused on the impact of cancel culture on the person being cancelled, but as a "average joe" I see it impacting society around that person more. Like they may still have plenty of fans and are making a living, but the people who are fans of their work now feel like they can't be open about their admiration. It's not just the cancelled person who gets the public shaming, it's anyone who says, "I like Harry Potter" after JKRowling gets cancelled -- they also get shamed by whatever group has done the cancelling.
No, people where hating on Harry Potter & fans waaay before she got cancelled. It's mostly because of the cringe they post, Jk Rowling using token characters & hating on things that are popular lol. (I'm not against hp)

People assume that if you like Harry Potter, you're automatically transphobic because JK Rowling is, which is not true. And to be clear on the issue of "cancel culture" in relation to certain social media stars, for POC, the issue has ALWAYS been there. But no one cares if it's not en vogue to care. And it's not one incident "10 years ago" if it's the very foundation of someone's career. So many issues affecting POC essentially do not matter unless persons with lighter complexions en masse care. IMO, the only people truly cancelled are the viral 30 second Twitter normies. Those in positions of power rarely have had that truly occur.
yep, and the people who have been proper cancelled have either been women (of all races but primarily POC women) and MOC. White creators are rarely, if ever, actually cancelled. They just think they are when they're held accountable bc it's uncomfortable.

I never thought about it before but it is kind of weird lol
i think it's because of the concept of inclusivity. makeup has always been associated with women and femininity, but now our world is more open to men expressing themselves through makeup and fashion, and breaking the previous standards of what is masculine and feminine. so that's why, in my opinion, they get a lot more of attention, because a woman doing her makeup isn't seen as new or revolutionary. most of these men are gay too, which further proves my point (visibility and inclusivity lead to normalization).
on the other hand, we live in a patriarchal society, and women are always being pushed to the back in every aspect and men always get the mic and spotlight, for better or for worse🤷🏻♀️
I can think of three reasons men dominate the sub count in the beauty community.
1. Some girl have the wants to have a Gay Best Friend. Many male beauty influencer give you this experience by having a Kiki and talk about make up and fashion.
2. They are an inspiration for other men interested in makeup or give other people of the LGBTQ+ community a feeling of being accepted, seen and free.
3. When you follow a makeup tutorial, results will differ. Maybe some girls would feel less accomplished or dissatisfied when they don’t think they look as good as the influencer. But with when you have this feeling with a female influencer you would faster think of she is way more prettier than I am than with a male.
It's hard to listen to y'all talk about the pandemic sometimes. I would give anything to live in a place where my government is concerned about protecting me and my loved ones from the virus. It is embarrassing how this situation has been handled, and it's frustrating that I can't do anything about it. I'm returning to my college campus in the fall, and I'm worried about other students partying in large groups and having to go to class with them. There aren't many people talking about how individuals are being affected on a daily basis- I feel like I have no options and no protection. This isn't even mentioning the how self- isolation is affecting my mental health. It's easy to talk about the bigger picture and how embarrassing and ridiculous it is, but it is so scary to be in the middle of it with no way out.
Eilleen Plante I feel for you so much, I’m entering my last year of university, luckily they are offering mostly online classes and no one is forced to be on campus but it’s still hard to settle with the reality of everything that’s going on. Internships are basically cancelled and that’s very important especially right now when jobs are so sparse.

I've been thinking about this, I think ben does have a point that the beauty community is inherently superficial, but I think all genres of content are superficial to a degree.
The people who have large followings in beauty, vlogging, gaming, etc. almost always have a large audience who's there to see how pretty they are, how much money they have, how skilled they are. To show off a skill online is kinda vain in itself, because you sort of have to think that you're good at what you do.
I genuinely don't think being "superficial" is necessarily negative though, sometimes things are just surface-level deep, nothing really wrong about that. Sometimes a beauty guru just wants to show how well their makeup turned out. Vain? Kinda, but not harmful until it turns into something way too serious.
Also, I feel like saying the beauty community is the most toxic is not true at all. The gaming community is on fire rn cuz there's so many people being accused of being s3xua1 pr3dat0rs

I’ve bumped into a COUPLE celebrities in my life and this one time I saw Sophie Turner while she was shooting in my city. I did not want to bother her but my dad, knowing I was a huge GOT fan, recognized her and dragged me over to say hi. I think being polite, not taking too much of their time and not attracting too much attention is the way to go if you want to say hi. This was also right after the season Sansa got SUPER interesting as a character, so I used that opportunity to tell her how much I’d grown to love that character throughout the years and her acting.She was super sweet and was the one to ask me if I wanted a hug and a picture. I was super flustered XD I think just treating them like a normal person and being genuine (aka complimenting their work/acting if you really look up to them) is always nice. I’m gonna guess thats nicer for them than just treating them like a commodity for an IG picture

She seems like she would be really funny and nice so long as you aren't just running up to her to get a selfie as though you are trying to collect Pokemon. I've heard so many celebrities say in interviews that they would rather have a 2 minute conversation than give a photo. So I have a funny celeb story, Halloween 2004 I was flying to meet my now husband for the first time (we met online and lived on opposite sides of Washington State, I was flying from Seattle side to Spokane Airport) and on the plane was Sean Astin aka Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings. It was shocking because Spokane Airport is very small and this plane is small so the 9pm 60 minute flight was buzzing. Well I get off the plane and meet my husband in person for the first time and tell him about Sean knowing he's a huge LotR fan, we talk about how exciting it is and then grab my bag and leave and as we are outside we walk past this tall guy with shoulder length hair, this uncommon hat style (for that region of Washington/Idaho border) and overall just didn't look like he was from around the area waiting off to the side and we realize it's Viggo Mortensen aka Aragon!!!!! So my now husband turns around and goes up to and shakes his hand and just says "hi, huge fan" and Viggo says thanks in his deep accent. Come to find out Sean Astins mom lived (she has since passed away) less than an hour away across the Idaho border so Sean and Viggo were heading over there. People were being really respectful but you could tell they were struggling not take a bunch of pictures and fresh out because this was not even a full year after the theater release of the last LotR so the hype was still high. Btw, husband and I are celebrating our 15 year wedding anniversary on Saturday.
my kitty passed away unexpectedly yesterday so seeing Menchie made me smile :) thank you both for being amazing people, I appreciate all you do for us so very much

Do you remember when Morgan Adams talked about that beauty guru trip and how they bullied her for being different and the rule about how you only talk to people who have so much percent less followers than you? And that it was like hs? It’s definitely a problem. There’s some beauty gurus I love that aren’t like that but it’s definitely pervasive within that community.
