I cannot believe you talked about Native Americans... I feel so loved and actually seen... You brought up the MMIW and I nearly cried. Hearing someone with your platform actually bring it up.. I feel seen. Thank you Cristine, from the bottom of my heart. I myself am a N.A., I am a full blooded Navajo on the Navajo Nation and I am always on high alert, because i don't want my mom to find out I'm missing. Then I'm found in the ditch, dead. YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION TO SPEAK ON IT. PLEASE BRING IT UP TO THE LIGHT. MY PEOPLE ARE DYING, MY SISTERS ARE MISSING WITH NO KILLERS IN PRISON. MY SISTER TRIBES ARE HURTING. I'M HURTING. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR BRINGING IT UP. You are an amazing human being Cristine. Thank you for helping my People be seen. Ahé'heé.

I remember watching a documentary on CNN talk and visit the various N.A. reservations in the USA. And honestly, the indigenous people need more awareness. They truly need our help. Whether it's Canada or the US, the fact remains that indigenous women are much more likely to go missing or murdered. And that's not okay.

@@stinkylizzzy4830 Res as in reservations? Reservations were set up to force Natives off their own land. The trail of tears is part of that. And a lot of natives died. And, USA wasn't that great to the natives of Hawaii either. I think you're referring to tribes. However, a good way of finding out which tribe you belong to is doing a DNA test. Like from 23andme.com or Ancestry.com if you have the funds.

lizzy is drowning I would check with the tribes near you or hints of where your dad’s family is from. I know my tribe has an enrollment office and they do get phone calls and emails from people requesting their certificate of Indian blood. You could try reaching out to the tribal offices and give them your information and your dads.

Sorry, software developer here. Mini rant.
The attack they claim to protect against, you have protection against if your website traffic is encrypted. (And guess what HTTPS does?) So, the average person does not need a VPN just for normal browsing of the web. probably the only thing a VPN is good for, for a normal non-technical person, is for making it appear like the user is in another country. But, seeing all these bogus security claims from these VPN companies really grinds my gears. It's all fear mongering and making people think they need to buy expensive software that they don't need or understand. Yes, VPNs can be useful, but NOT for what they're advertising! The advertising of these companies is so shady, and these clueless youtubers promoting them should know better!

The expression 'don't cry over spilled milk' actually comes from a time when most milk was gotten by hand milking a cow. When the cow kicked the bucket of milk and it spilled everywhere it meant that you just lost all the milk for that day, as a product or for your own family.

I appreciate the discussion on American health care. My husband was diagnosed with Liver Cancer (15 cm tumor in the right lobe of his liver) when he was 29. While we are beyond grateful that he survived, we were saddled with incredible debt due to his treatment. We actually became homeless at one point so that we could continue to get treatment. Yes, we had health insurance. Thankfully we had family to take us and our newly adopted son in at the time, but it's crazy that we literally had to make choices about feeding our family or treating his cancer. Even 6 years later we are still paying the bills. I don't know the answer for how to make health care in America better, but we definitely shouldn't have people have to choose between housing, food, and life-saving surgeries.

In Quebec there is the French Language institute (Institut de la langue française) that defend the language because we were having issues keeping the rates of french use high. We want to protect our culture and heritage so in order to protect it and prevent people from just flooding our markets without caring about us we asked to implant this. So there is laws about if your product name or commercial place makes easy for french people to understand what you are selling, you must put a sub title, a translation or stuff like that under your brand name/product. ex: if you have a Pokemon card pack, it would be written ''jeu de cartes'' or a descriptive of the product underneath it.

How did two countries, both formed out of English (and French) colonies become so distinct? All the conversation about healthcare, politics, and culture boils down to a short history lesson.
The United States was formed when 13 colonies joined together to fight for "freedom" (and by freedom I really mean a fight to not pay taxes to the country that started them). While Canada gained independence through peaceful means and we maintain a strong relationship with the UK as well as all the other countries in the Commonwealth.
Today, Americans believe in and stand for the struggle for "freedom." This is why many are still not interested in their taxes going towards other people's healthcare, why many are afraid to give up guns, and why immigrants are often expected to melt into the culture (hence it is called a melting pot) and become "American."
In Canada we refer to ourselves as a Mosaic and we celebrate people maintaining connections to their culture and country of origin. This is also why their isn't as much of a Canadian identity. Even Canadians who have been in Canada for generations often maintain customs from their countries of family origin.
Today we are quite distinct from each other in many ways. If you are more of an individualist (want to work to get ahead, work for what you want, and let other people work for their own), the States might be a better place for you. If you have a strong sense of community and working for the best of all people within your borders and abroad, Canada might be your place.
I am a dual citizen, born and raised in Canada with MUCH time growing up in Washington and Oregon, and both countries are wonderful. But at the core hold some fairly different values.

Thinking about how the United States healthcare system has treated me is so painful. I didn't have insurance because I couldn't afford it, so I had to put off going to the doctor when I became really sick. I was jaundiced, my pee was nearly black, I couldn't keep down any food, I was feverish, couldn't sleep, and had intense abdominal and back pain. When I finally couldn't take it anymore and went to the doctor, it turned out I had such a severe case of mono that my kidneys and liver were damaged and I was in severe danger of my organs failing. It took me years to pay off the medical bills and the experience haunts me to this day.

Apparently people think that it would cause some huge increase in taxes because their 'normal' medical bills are so expensive. What they don't realise is that private hospitals and private companies hike up the prices to ridiculous levels (or so I've heard from many many places on the internet). So if America were to finally catch up to the rest of the world and set up universal healthcare then, while there would be a small tax (in Aus it's 2% of our taxable income), it would be nowhere near the current price of healthcare. If you look up 'Australia medicare levy' and go to the ato.gov.au website there is a better explanation of how things work.

The way Cristine says “poutine” warms my French Canadian heart.
There were several interesting points made about the whole Québec situation, but I would add that the bilingual packaging goes both ways; in Québec, you also have both English and French on items in stores, even though most people speak French. It’s just a way to make sure that every Canadian can read packaging text in at least one of the two official languages. In my mind, if you are bothered by it, you don’t have enough real problems in your life. Also, there might be fees linked to translation, but if you actually take the time to look at those translations, you'll see that some of them are straight from Google Translate. I remember an incident with Sobeys in Ontario where “spicy turkey breast wrap” was translated to “Turquie épicée du sein”, which basically makes no sense and can be translated back to “Spiced Turkey (the country) of the breast (the human kind)”. It's pretty common to see botched translations like that.

Sure but effectively there are only 2. Only two that have enough power to get into office and because of the “winner take all” voting system in the USA, it’s likely to drift to and stay as a two party system. Even in American media, non democrat/republican are almost always referred to as Independents. In Canada, an independent is literally someone who doesn’t have a party. Also in the states they always refer to something as being bipartisan (other places call it non-partisan because there’s more than 2).

You're damn right I will advocate for universal healthcare! Served in the military for 4 years, got out with an honorable discharge with no claimed disabilities. Worked for a few years and developed a genetic autoimmune disease (psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis). I had to quit my job because I had it covering over 60% of my skin eventually. Was in pain every day and neither Veterans Healthcare or my job's private insurance would cover the medication for it. I went several years before I was able to get insurance through my college to cover the meds.
America can't even take care of its veterans properly when it comes to healthcare, let alone all of its citizens. I'm sure there are people in much worse situtations than what I've told. Not a nice place to live for people that need to get on their feet. I'd leave right if I wasn't still neck deep in school and other financial restrictions. These conservatives act like anyone can just get a good enough job to put a roof over your head, deal with no insurance, and get out of a swamp of debt in only a short few years. Then they blame drugs for being the reason people are poor half the time. I know a lot of poor people who have never touched a drug in their life, they are poor because they can't pay the transactional costs that come with BEING POOR, such as not being able to start a bank account or get a loan. The shit stacks here man, especially with the sky high divorce rates creating negative residual generation fallout.

Waiting in an emergency room in Canada take HOURS and I mean if you have a broken arm you can be sitting there for 12 hours. The privilege is great having the option to go to an emergency room and not pay for the visit, but the wait discourages you from going anyways. And we still technically pay for healthcare through taxes, and have limited dental, eye, and medication coverage unless you have good insurance. It’s free, but you don’t have to spend 8 hours in a clinic, (I spent 1 hour waiting) you don’t have to wait months to have mental health care etc etc. In Tokyo, you have to pay 30% of the cost, but you can literally almost always see a doctor ASAP.
In Quebec, I’ve had to wait 8 or 9 hours to see a doctor who is overworked, and even when I need to ask follow up questions, it’s been impossible to go back and talk to them. It’s just a mess. They are overworked. Of course it’s better than in America, but it’s not great either.

I mean yeah, but you Americans get more cereal flavors and US domestic shipping rates. I went to Vegas one year and found SPRINKLED DONUT CAP'N CRUNCH. Canada could never.
Honestly, though, Canada is nice for the health care, but we definitely aren't perfect.

@@savannawithoutanh5973 not perfect, but I'm sick of living in a country where people can politically condemn homosexuality. It's eye opening to hear of a country that doesn't have the extreme right wing that we do.

Sydney I’ve always wanted to and looked into it when I was 18 but I didn’t have a “needed” skill or fit the other requirements. Now that I’m married to a chemist completing his Ph.D program I am so stoked to possibly be able to move there!

    I heard this joke once:
Two government officials traveled to the border of US/Canada to inform a home that lived on the border that there had been slight changes to the border and that they were more living on the US side of the border. The homeowner replied with relief: "well that is great, I have been getting tired of these Canadian Winters."

“How do we explain this to someone living in Iowa” haha that would be me. Not normally a podcast person but they just feel like listening to your friends talking if that makes sense.
