    A great game to revisit time and time again. Of course, the legend of "Von Bardeleben storming out" is one of those classics of chess literature. Great that you took the time to explore it, and the article of Winter (probably the most respected authority in chess history nowadays) is very interesting to put things in full context.
    Regarding the game itself, it's another of those sad stories in chess in the catalog of "One side didn't castle". Poor Von Bardeleben probably thought that he could hold the position by trading everything and keeping the King on f7. But, it turned out that White's development was overwhelming once the rooks got into the game. A true classic game, and thanks for reuploading it: it is indeed the bravest rook in history.

    • @PaulDeCamp
      @PaulDeCamp 3 года назад +1

      Had he castled then Steinitz could have time to make an escape square for his king. And both sides go on. It's a whole different game. Might interesting, might not.

    • @elasiduo108
      @elasiduo108 3 года назад

      @@PaulDeCamp Indeed. It was the XIX Century, and the chess principles weren't completely discovered in those days. Von Banderleben was a decent chess player, but he botched the opening. Steinitz, one of the main founders of Modern Chess Theory, grasped the chance and took him to town.

    Btw, "betimes" is archaic, it just means early. The word appears often in the King James version of the Bible & has a bit of a literary feel to it. I look forward to the Paul Morphy opera match remastered, my next favorite match after this one. Hopefully got more stories behind it and maybe showing more move variants like what if Morphy took the rook as a Butcher's move.

    I could totally picture Morphy getting irritated by the applause and reversing the move order to give away a game to his opponent had that happened.

    This is the Golden Year of Agadmator, brand new content, a new webpage, approaching the Million Subs mark, and remake from the good ol' stuff. Been following you for 2 years and I'm glad to see how much you have improved and you're receiving the recognition you deserve!

    I don’t know how you balance all the communication you must now receive Antonio. Perhaps you could ask RUclips to fund you some staff? I think they’d agree given the refinement of your channel.
    I loved this game and think I’m only starting to appreciate the aesthetic of particular tête-à-têtes.

    Agad, "betimes" is archaic English and means before the usual or expected time, or early. So she woke up earlier than usual that morning. And in case you were also wondering what was meant by "I was waiting with a buttonhole, which I pinned on his coat", a buttonhole is a boutonniere, or small flower or bouquet worn by a man in the buttonhole of the lapel of his dinner jacket or coat.

    Pronunciation of the name 'Bowles' is as the word 'Bowls', not as b-owls, but as 'beau' or 'b-oh' as the lead phonetic.
    'Betimes' is an old-fashioned word meaning: before (the usual or expected) time.
