    My mind boggles to see how how these Old Masters understood the board so well. Thank you Mato for this upload. I am even more confused than ever before.

    I do appreciate how you revealed the blunders possible with such amazing sacrifices made by Steinetz. That 1 rank open in the back is always treacherous!

    1:57 "What has white accomplished? He has isolated queen's pawn, but that is not an accomplishment."
    Sometimes Mato just cracks me up.

    Mato this is one of my favorite games ever. Steinitz was about 65 years old when he produced this sparkling gem. By the way, if you consider his first world championship as his win in 1866, he held the world championship longer than anyone - 28 years - longer than Lasker. Furthermore, Lasker was drawn by Schlecter. AND many years during his :"reign" there were no tournaments due to /world /War One. Steinitz stood head and shoulders above his contemporaries.

    What a game!! No engine,no modern GM can ever come up with such an extraordinary and exquisitely well crafted duel. I think with this game Steinitz can shoulder to shoulder with great the mighty Morphy! Thks mato sir for a great upload. This is an immortal classic

    Thanks so much Mato for doing this great video. Steinitz was simply superb. It is too bad about the tragic figure of Curt von Bardeleben. He was the basis for the character in the novel ( The Defense - by Vladimir Nabokov ). Apparently after this game Bardeleben stormed out and never formally resigned.
    Thanks again Mato ;)

    This has to be one of the complicated chess games I reviewed...I saw this game on the book and walked through, but I could not understand what was going on at the end, and your video helped a lot! I'm still curious if there are any other possible moves for Black, such as taking the rook at some point....

He is my favourite chess journalist along with you, also was a good player so may be you could coment one of his games some day. the reason is that i think he is a good person with a contagious passion for chess, i feel just like you, but without hair i supose LOL. Thanks for your videos and for your voice wich transmit serenity and good sense of humor Greetings from spain.

  • @anishkrishna8792
    @anishkrishna8792 11 лет назад

    mato is there still a chance for a draw after taking rook on g7 with queen?
    if queen takes on g7then rc8 after black recapture with rook then queen c8 then qf8 blocking then qe6 check after king h8 :knight f7 :king g8 and positions repeated.
    mato am not good at chess if this is a mistake kindly pardon me........

    yo read the Art of attack in chess by vladimir Vulcovic, he has a chapter on the attacking the king on the open file that shows the strats on this.
    Anyway, simple answer:Qxd7+ its a check so he has to move his king instead of checkmating white

    Mato blundered at 5:34. After King moves to e7, Knight is trapped :P

    • @ThereIsNoFish
      @ThereIsNoFish 9 лет назад +4

      Kerim Ozal Knight is trapped but killing it wins 3 or 4 moves for white which translates to winning the A, B and D pawns. black is just lost. I wouldn't call that a blunder :)

    • @Mike_Wilson_KJV
      @Mike_Wilson_KJV 8 лет назад +10

      +Kerim Ozal At 5:34, the knight will escape. If Ke7, g4 Kf7, g5 saves the knight. i.e. If fxg5 then Nxg5 and gets away. If Kg7 then Nxf6 and is protected by the pawn on g5. If black tries to stop white's g-pawn advance by pushing the black pawn to g5, white can still save the knight by pushing the f-pawn.
      Ke7, g4 g5, f4 gxf4, g5 and the knight is saved.
      Or, Ke7, g4 g5, f4 Kf7, fxg5 and the knight is saved.
