That was utterly glorious. Mato has showcased some brilliant mating sequences for us, but this just might be my personal favorite. The inevitable and willing execution of the queen to a pawn.

+Pizza Shark It's my favorite too. Keep coming back to it. Never seen a king trap itself in the corner by his own men that brutally before.

I remember a construct that sooo impressed me when I was studying chess 40 years or so ago.. at the time of the first Spassky Fisher match..... where there were loads of frozen pawns and for every move by white king to break in there was (generally) only one square for the black king to move to to maintain the draw. it so enchanted me that I mapped out the squares of possible movements. Of course I have lost that particular chess puzzle and can not find it... oh well...lament of an old man....(smile)

7:43 Rook on f1 can move, but only along the same rank to keep pinning knight to king. Knight on g7 can move to any legal square, even to e6 (if Ne6 dxe6 then K can capture the newly queened e-pawn). King can move to any legal square, including g8 (the move actually played in the game).

I find it interesting to think how close some zugzwangs can be to stalemates. If one looks at the position at 8:13, which as Mato pointed out is a possible position had White not resigned when he chose to do so, try to imagine a white rook sitting on h3. If that were the case, with White to move, this would be stalemate. On the subject of zugswangs, although I like this one, Aron Nimzowitsch has an absolutely breathtaking zugswang in a game against Saemisch in 1923.

end1dream I think that's because of his East European heritage. I've noticed that others from the region (like Susan Polgar) also pronounce it correctly. It's only the Americans (and to a lesser extent the English) players who normally have a problem.

There is another game I saw similar to this but more subtle, a recent one decade back or so, between two grandmasters, where the king just simply walked up through the chessboard on a leisurely stroll to deliver mate and the other side could simply do nothing about it.
I hope you find and cover that one, Sir MATO
