At the end of the USSR Championship (1925), Efim Bogoljubov emerged as the champion. He had participated as a Russian national although he was living in Triberg, Germany at the time. Nikolai Vasilyevich Krylenko, head of the Soviet Chess Association, in an effort to popularize chess in the Soviet Union, organized an international tournament of the scope seen in New York (1924) a year earlier. (1) The event was held in the Metropol Hotel in Moscow (2) from November 7 to December 10. In addition to the Soviet Champion, ten foreign masters, including Emanuel Lasker and Jose Raul Capablanca, the former and current World Champions respectively, and ten Soviet players were invited to compete in the round robin format. Before the start of the tournament pundits expected a repeat of New York, with Capablanca and Lasker racing each other to the finish, but once it was under way Bogoljubov was the one who performed supremely, ultimately winning the tournament ahead of the two favorites. His victory was hailed as a Soviet triumph, and in truth the tournament was an unprecedented success for the Revolution. Hundreds of Soviet citizens gathered at the hotel to follow the games, and tens of thousands across the country awaited news from Moscow each day. The celebration would be a bittersweet one for Soviet Russia, however, as Bogoljubov would never participate in another Soviet event. He defected a year later and eventually became a German citizen, earning him the moniker "renegade" (as Alekhine had). It was also a tournament that would be of enormous historical importance.

The bishop+rook combination has to be the most brutal set of chess moves I have seen. I mean, just wiped every single pawn that was in the way!

The training exercise specifically said not to take that pawn. You are opening the A file for blacks rook and activating their piece for them. That pawn is already out numbered two to one and the others four to two. Whites E1 rook will need to defend the back ranks pawns as well as back rank check mate simply for taking a "free" pawn. Nothing is free.

I think it's called the 7th Seal because it's a 7-turn attack counting white's turns which completely seals black's available moves as it unfolds (also because the 7th Seal sounds epic and it is a rather epic play to watch play out).
It's a reference to the movie by the same name. In The Seventh Seal, Death challenges the protagonist to a game of chess for the fate of the protagonist.
My theory is that the name is from when the knight blunders his queen near the end of the movie. however, in this game "the knight" beats "death" (lasker) with an awesome queen sacrifice insead.

Carlos Torre was born in the mexican city of Merida, near Cancún. When he was adolescent his family moved to New Orleans, the city where Paul Morphy lived some decades before. There, Torre was trained by a chess player whose name i don't remember. He soon improved his chess performance and after winning a good position among US chess players, he started to participate in international tournaments. Some players that met him said Carlos Torre didn't eat in a healthy way, he spent whole days eating just icecream and other candies, and he sleeped just 2 or 3 hours a day. Suddenly, he had several delirious episodes in public places before being recluded in a mental health institution. He didnt stay the rest of his life inclosured. Some years later, he returned to Merida, México, where he lived along with relatives. His life then was quite and peaceful. It seems he played chess ocassionally. He never was married.
Thanks for the information on Carlos' life outside of chess...eventually a man learns if one woman doesn't work out...try another. Not sure if that was what created his mental breakdown though but if it was...how tragic.

well the rook isnt that interesting because the bishop is hanging, the rook is defended
youre up the exchange but you rather look to take a whole piece off the board
You’re already down a piece, therefore taking the unprotected bishop equalises whereas taking the protected rook is a blunder as your knight is going to be taken and you’ll end up down in material (2 pieces > 1 rook)
Hello :) Ingmar Bergman, the director of The Seventh Seal died on 30 July 2007, the day before this game was named game of the day. I think it is just in homage of him.

I just bought a new Wegiel chess set and replayed this great game...it is my favorite game of all time. Lasker must have felt like a tennis ball when his king was in perpetual check...ha ha what a way to treat a world champion.

I would like to say that you didn't mention whole purpose of the Queen move cause also there is Queen takes rook on E1 checkmate at 4:15 :)
Why not take the B4 pawn here?
I'm assuming because all it does is pick up a pawn and force the Queen to dance around to stay safe.
In response to Queen taking B4 Pawn, White could bring the Bishop back to D2, threatening the Queen. Queen can't capture because of Rook... D2, C3, C4, C5, B5, and A5 are all not options for the Queen for retreating... basically just a waste of time and potentially dangerous.

The Torre Attack is a great opening for someone who doesn't have time to study opening lines.
A small correction. At 8:54 The King doesn't necessarily have to go to g5. He can go to g7 or h7. However that only prolongs the inevitable for a little while longer. Nothing significant changes.
mozisi if u move your king to g7 its just forking your king and knight when the E rook goes to e7
Varian Harits White wouldn't have time to capture the knight as he has to play g3 to avoid being checkmated on the back row by the rook on b8... Again, black is lost if he plays g7 or h7 or g5 or g6. Doesn't matter. I just pointed out that he necessarily doesn't have to go to g5 because that's worse than g7 or h7.

This was played nearly 100 years ago and your advice could hardly be applied.
with capturing rook worth 5 pts u are loosing knight worth 3 points. so benefit of 2 points but with bishop you get 3 points straight

I love your channel dude, keep up the good work. Can you do a video on when on the 2nd move, white will put their Queen to H5 threatening to take the central pawn? I often get into this situation but I feel I could do better to punish my opponent for revealing the queen too early, I want to know the best way to handle this frequent situation.
