Just wanted to say I've been playing chess a lot more recently after subbing to your channel. I finally was able to solve my first question instead of just enjoying the show. Thanks man
Thank you for beginning this series. It is a great relief after the chaos of the recent blitz championship and the tedium of the engine-generated draws that characterized the WC match. Nice to get back to humans playing humans at a civilized pace with sheer human ingenuity.
Really enjoying this capablanca series more than i thought i would! I voted for the carlsen vs anand rematch but im definately enjoying this much more! Thanks for the content agadmator, very well put together as always.
Getting 6 A-pawns requires white to capture literally all 15 of black's pieces using pawns. Black also needs to promote at least 3 pawns first, just so they can be moved to the right places to be captured. This position was reached by Lasker vs Steinitz in Moscow in ... just kidding, we have a completely new position on the board.
Well, it's geometry. You start with one a-pawn so you would need 5 more of them. Since pawns won't ever toch the first rank and in this case they also won't touch the eighth rank, you have a perfect triangle: a3, a7, e3. The area of that triangle is 15 squares: The squares in which black pieces would have to be sacrificed
This is cleverly figured out! :) Couldn't black also capture some of white's pieces and the two extra pawns to move their pawns over? If you moved f, g, and h pawns 4 ranks left this would work, but that is too many of whites pieces (7+2 pawns); at a minimum it might be sensible to move the f pawn to the d rank this way, and let the g and h pawns promote. :p
@@NWRIBronco6 Ah yes, this would work in principle. However, I didn't consider it because my chess skills are so elite that no one ever captures any of my pieces. I play gambits, but strictly only the declined variants.

after tal series, this one is my fav so far. I love the stories. #suggestion do you have any interviews or quotes from chess players of that time on capablanca while he was a kid. Like, how did they describe him?
@Steve Brown Well technically yes because Capa learned theory as he played games but also I think he did not explicitly study opening theory while he was a child. The point could also be made that if you study your games looking for ways you could have played better or if your ideas were sound then indirectly you are studying opening theory.

at 8:48 i think there's a good in between move where instead of capturing the rook and promoting the pawn, first with the bishop capture the rook that is pinned and after black defends promote the pawn on f7 by capturing the other rook leaving u with a queen, knight and rook (white) vs a queen (black)
I like your videos, even though I don’t play chess. I love the commentary and graphics of your videos, they are easily the best. I especially like the critical moments when you talk about the impending great move and challenge the viewer to pause the video and figure it out. This is why I watch your videos. The hypothetical great moves you occasionally ask me to pause the video for fall flat. I always end the video when you ask the viewer to pause the video to guess the move that wasn’t played... but which you determine to be best. I say this because they are typically done at moments when there are too many pieces on the board for me to really care, and because there isn’t a master chess player counter acting your moves... it’s just your hypothetical counters. Even still, excellent videos all around.
At 3:15 is there anything particularly wrong with capturing with the D4 pawn instead of the F4 pawn? The only move I see that might make F4 favorable is that it means black cant push D4 themselves but at the same time that means the knight is stuck watching blacks new D4 pawn and it would probably fall if you pressure the knight. So is either side capturing here acceptable or is there a specific line that makes F4 capturing favorable? Assuming if Qb6+ king simply moves to g2 or h1 and plays on
Could I make a suggestion? Would it be possible to have the +/- for how much material each player has visible, maybe above and below their respective pictures? I just find it easier to see who’s got what when the position gets complicated.
