A long standing legend claims that Russian Tsar Nicholas II, who had partially funded the tournament, formally conferred the title 'Grandmaster' to the five finalists: Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tarrasch and Marshall. Chess historian Edward Winter has questioned this, stating that the earliest known sources that support this story are an article by Robert Lewis Taylor in the June 15, 1940, issue of The New Yorker, and Marshall's autobiography 'My 50 Years of Chess' (1942).
The Lazy Cuban? Me thinks not. Look at that end game. It was like a relentless barrage in a seemingly drawn position. Excellent persistence and perseverance by Capablanca. Props to Lasker too for keeping his nerve against such a fierce attack.
Guys, the audio of the track is in Sanskrit, which is an ancient indian language..The Lines translate to: "Oh Holy Mother, please take me from darkness to the path of Light and goodness. Peace Peace." :)
I discovered today that you can make a chain of 5 players from Steinitz to Carlsen. Steinitz played Lasker, who played Botvinnik, who played Karpov, who played Carlsen.
I have a real soft spot for Lasker. Might have something to do with his Manual of Chess which I have had since I was a kid. I read somewhere that if you study Lasker's games you don't get a lot of brilliancies and stunning combos. What you get instead is the spirit of the chess fighter. Following his method will make you a very difficult opponent to beat.
Antonio Radic has become so influencial among chess bloggers that you see the rest trying to catch up. No day goes by without seen other sites posting Capa games. Capa saga has been very successful . Thank you for your dedication Antonio.
“Capablanca is not interested in a draw against the World Champion. Why would he, after all he’s Capablanca.” Haha, very true and that’s what I call sheer hubris and paisan could back it up.
Thank you for giving the option of not having any music. I tire of youtube, adverts & media in general trying to manipulate the way I feel rather than offering me an authentic experience of feeling that way.
#suggest i want to see ur fav game between tal and keres that u said tal sacrificed 3 pieces to get a draw in a losing position... after the capablanca saga of course
Just wanted to say, I'm playing chess again... after a pause of almost 10 years ! I subscribed to Lichess and I almost went to a rapid competition this Sunday... Don't feel quite ready yet... But playing sure enhances following your channel !! I guess I'm not just here for the show anymore :)
19:28 -- Capablanca doesn't have a forced win that I can see, but, if he had played only a few moves further, he could have arrived a few situations in which Lasker is reduced to a single response to avoid eventual checkmate, and they begin with Ng3, (Lasker: any rook move on 6th rank), Nh5. --Capablanca is thus threatening to exchange his knight for the black pawn. (Lasker: as before, any rook move on 6th rank), NxP, KxN, f6+, Kg6 (only viable move for a draw), f7, RxB+ (only viable move for a draw). After Nh5, Lasker could push g6 instead, but these also lead to blunder opportunities. Essentially, after fifty moves of general screwing around, Capablaca only needed to screw around for two more moves to see if Lasker would have either his rook or king in the wrong position.
It's amazing how such a basic question can't yet be known. The rook has at least one point short of the pieces and they are in the hands of Capablanca, the end game demon. Chess will never be tamed. Thanks for the vid, A.
Thanks for the video Antonio. Congratulations 🎉 on winning your chess club championship! Could you go over your games? I really enjoyed the previous ones you went over . Thanks! #suggestion
7-pieces syzygy tablebases were solved somewhat recently (a couple months ago) and they are on lichess. Stockfish gives +1.1 but this isn't checkmatable (because the tablebase would give the answer immediately otherwise) unless on move 101 white blunders and plays Nf6+
18:05 why capablanca can't go kf8 then kd7 to exchange the bishop on the pawn and push to victory? (my only idea is that black can draw by capturing pawn on f8 with R)
7:26 How about Rb8+? Black cant block with the bishop because of hanging rook, so black has to block with the knight, but then Bc5 wins the exchange. Am i right or drunk?
Thanks! The more I learn about both chess in general, and Emanuel Lasker specifically, the more I respect him. On another note - is it just me, or does Capablanca's facial expression seem very reminiscent of Al Pacino's Micheal Corleone in The Godfather??? tavi.
Thanks for your epic contribution. May your name go down in the annals of chess history. You once quoted Mikhail Tal (above board) saying something to the effect of' Capablanca's lightweight system has long been refuted (or are outdated?)' My question is, where can I find comparisons of how different systems/styles have evolved over the years. If anyone could point to such a resource I would be grateful.
FWIW, the final position of this game is a tablebase draw. One easy and quick way to show this is as follows: 1. Go to the online tablebase site syzygy-tables.info 2. Make sure that "White to move" is selected. 3. Enter the FEN position "6k1/6p1/1r1BK3/5P2/4N3/8/8/8" in the text box below the board. 4. Click "Set FEN". The evaluation will appear on the right. I'll leave the initial endgame position as an exercise for the reader, as no tablebases exist for that many pieces. :)
Hey Agad, thanks for the shout out! Love your channel. Do you have any recommendations for good books for beginners? So many out there, don't want to waste my time with bad or extremely outdated ones. Thank you!
At 7:16 Lasker can't capture at b2 Capablanca can play Rook to b8 check Now you can't move the bishop to block the check bcoz your own rook would be hanging..so Knight to f8 blocking the check But not capablanca will move Bishop to c5 and now threating rook capture f8 check mate.. How can Lasker deal with it ? He can give a couple of checks with rook along B file but after Capablanca move his king to g3..there are no more checks ! Or he can decide to give the Knight at f8..but that would be winning for Capablanca ! Can someone save the game for Lasker ???
How about Rb8 check, after rook captures on b2. You have to block, if blocked with the knight, you win the knight. And if blocked with bishop you win the rook on b2
Nazi were major cock jugglers but you can't ignore someone's genius just because they were nazi themselves, Fischer was a mysogynist, should we ignore his genius too?
you need to expand your ideas a little. do not ignore the fact that, that nazi improved chess, added something to this world rather than destroying it. we should always get the good things from anything.
At 7:16, white could havve gone rook b8 check, blacks only move is nd8. After rook captures, only way to defend is bishop to f8. White wins a full piece... Why didnt white go for this line?

They are all grandmasters if you go by how "norms" work. You have 3 world champions in those 5.
Take a shot every time Capablanca goes for Ruy-Lopez.

I would have blundered the end game so many times from either side. That was masterful.
When it's the end game but there is another 10 minutes you know you're up for something
I love how you always say "Congratulations you are an excellent...", so congratulations you are an excellent chess commentator :)
The Lazy Cuban? Me thinks not.

Right, great music, but I couldn't wait till the end of the song to see this game.

not a glitch, but an illegal move with a sound to let you know.
I think it proves how concentrated you are and that a minimal noise causes a bad reaction.

Once there is only 7 pieces left (75. Nxg5+), it is a tablebase draw and remains a tablebase draw. No blunders.
You are forgetting that human beings are not computers and make mistakes..all the time..
So 73 was wrong?
I love the epic music so much, it actually inspired me to make a playlist of epic music

Awesome, in all respects. Thank you very much sir!
I am glad you do not include the music in your videos. It would be quite over the top and definitively spoil your beautiful and nuanced storytelling.
Love ❤ the clash of styles and approach to the game.
18:07 is an instructive moment. If the bishop moves, then ...Rxg6! fxg6 is a fortress draw. Unless your name is Sam Shankland of course

7:26 How about Rb8+? Black cant block with the bishop because of hanging rook, so black has to block with the knight, but then Bc5 wins the exchange. Am i right or drunk?
1:01 😂😂😂
Both played brilhantly, but Lasker is so fucking resourceful that it never fails to amazes me.
So can someone tell me why at 6:47, Nf5 doesn't work? Cause it looks strong to me
I'm pretty sure it's the Bishop on b4 that messes up the idea of removing the knight but I'm just checking
Did anyone enter the position in the 7-men tablebase? This should be solved perfectly, no super computer required.
I did. It's a straight draw from the moment there are 7 men, and Lasker played the correct drawing moves.
But could there have been a more favorable way the position could have been simplified since the start of the endgame? I don't know.
Agadmator have a good taste in music as well👌👌👌
7:19 Capablance has B-c1 R-b1 B-d2 and wins the exchange but he missed it (also Agadmators).
but bishop would be pinned

Hey Agad, thanks for the shout out! Love your channel. Do you have any recommendations for good books for beginners? So many out there, don't want to waste my time with bad or extremely outdated ones. Thank you!
At 7:51, if Cabablanca put the root in B8 with check, I believe that he would win the rook if bishop blocks, or the knight, if the knight blocks, no?
You just play the knight to f8, when white still tries to play Bd2 you now have Bc5+ and win the exchange
Ran it a bit in Stockfish 10. It said white had a slight advantage at the beginning of the endgame but eventually it was a draw.
wow that was one heck of an endgame.
Nice slight toward modern players and their reliance on engines
Great! Any news about the subscribers' video?
5:50 pawn to c6?
@agadmator for Syzygy endgame tablebases, after 75.Nxg5+ it's a draw.
That end game was exhausting lol
Great defense by the old lion Lasker!
7:32 Rb8. Nf8. Bc5 isnt this winning ?
Bishop takes Bishop with check!!
no because Bxc5 with check
Oh ok didnt see that... this is why i lose my games haha
I must say, I was watching this video while playing the music
I want to enjoy the show so epic music can wait after the game, I hope I am still an excellent subscriber

Capablanca can play Rook to b8 check

After Bc5, Bxc5+... the capture comes with check, no time to grab the rook.
In 7:17 there's a back rank weakness an no good way to defend without losing the knight or the rook. @agadmator
Knight to f8….
How about Rb8 check, after rook captures on b2. You have to block, if blocked with the knight, you win the knight. And if blocked with bishop you win the rook on b2
7:28 you can win the rook rook to b8 check bishop has to block and then you can pick up the rook on b2
knight can block
