You are so right RE: putting pressure on ourselves and other artists. I've had to tell myself that not everything can be 11/10. Plus, not every design can fit into everyone's style or wardrobe. I've seen so many gorgeous designs that I still have no desire to touch, and I've seen others adore designs that I just don't get. But that's what makes this community so exciting! If everything were 11/10, it would get boring!
So true. And you’re spot on that what doesn’t strike one person as magical might strike another one as just that. We are lucky to have so many designers out there!
I absolutely love your podcast. I appreciate your "analysis" of life, your sharing of struggles. I'm sure all who listen appreciate that. Also, I can relate to your joy in yarn that fulfils your artistic expression of a piece you are working on. And seeing your joy brings a smile to my face as I listen. Finally, just as Linus of the Peanuts gang NEEDS his blanket, I also cannot go anywhere without my knitting. It's my "Linus blanket", my anti-anxiety...and when my knitting is with me, I'm calm and can handle the world better. Peace to you and thank you for your podcasting.
Thank you so much for your sweet comment. It means so much to me. Sometimes I’m talking into the void and I’m not sure if its being received. And yes! I feel like Linus through and through! My knitting gives me an anchor in the world. Lots of love to you 💜
I’m here for your life chat just as much as your knitting chat. Catching up on your pods since the past month has been crazy. I can so relate to everything with kids. Sending strength and love.
Hi honey! I’m glad you got to catch up. It’s been an eventful summer! I hope your basking in the family togetherness after summer camp! Lots of love to you 💚
Howdy! A wonderful podcast as usual. Picking out colors for projects can be so overwhelming. When I saw your spincycle yarn I immediately thought it would look lovely with a mid-toned cool toned beige, a little darker than the beige in the skein (and then you showed that yarn that matched what I saw in my head! Perfect timing), paired with a cream mohair for the fluff. It would make it easy to see all of the wonderful color shifts of the spincycle while the lighter fluff in my vision adds an ethereal look to the project. Of course, it's not my project, and I sincerely look forward to whatever color scheme you come up with, it will be beautiful! Happy knitting
Hugs! It is the worst feeling in the world when one of the kiddos is struggling. Hate it!But I also try to remind myself how resilient we all are. ❤❤❤ also omg traveling without knitting? Gasp!!!
For your Tesselated sweater I think a dark navy blue or black main color would make the yellow pop and maybe a taupe or lighter mohair or vice versa? Your cardigan is beautiful! I always love your podcasts! Raising kids is such a struggle and a reward. You're not alone! you're doing a great job!
Thank you Ashley!! It is so important to remember that parenting struggles are very normal. And we always find a way through 🥰 And yes-definitely going to use a dark navy or charcoal to set off the neon. I need to order the yarn, but I can’t decide on the mohair yet!
When my son was little I wanted to knit him an irish knit sweater...I got right up to the neck did all the cables...came out good for making a sweater for the first time....but I really got goofed up on the neck...no you tube back then to go to and no one I knew knitted...ripped it all out😢...but I know what you mean about doing cables their beautiful...right now I'm knitting socks...I learned how to make them a couple of years ago and now I'm obsessed with making them.😂I can see you are a caring mom and right now dealing with the teenage years is not easy....but in the end everything will turn out fine just because you care.❤🥰
Hello my friend! Apologies for the very late response. Life has been a bit crazy. How heartbreaking to rip out a sweater. Social media is a double edged sword, but I feel very lucky for the resource of You Tube. And yes, the teenage years are quite a tricky stretch, but also a beautiful one. It’s truly watching the butterfly struggle to emerge. You just have to stay with it.
I finished the Tesselated Vest in June- it was a blast! I used Every Rose with Moondrake Moonspun in Lichen and Fuwa Fuwa in Sand. You can't go wrong whichever choice you go with- it's just so fun. I did hop on the Framed bus tho the pattern didn't really resonate too much with me. I'm just sucker for the beautiful yarn and another enjoyable Mowry pattern 😍 I just succeeded in the long tail tubular cast on, so I feel incredibly proud 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I’m so happy to hear that you loved hte Tesselated pattern, Casey! I was getting a little nervous because you do hear some negative things about it. But its beautiful. Good for you on the tubular cast on. I will never do it! It’s just so fussy and I’m lazy 😂
My knitting group had committed to making the Rhinebeck sweater regardless of whether they liked it or not. The challenge then becomes how to re-think, revise or alter it to make it one's own and something you'd be happy with whether it be to switch up the colors, reshape the garment or use the pattern charts only and make it into an accessory. This is where the happy creativity can take place. I personally would consider knitting the pattern design into a shawl.
I love this so much. You are so lucky to have a knitting group like that! How exciting to all take one piece as a jumping off point, but make it your own. I would be very interested in seeing what you come up with!!
Great episode. So I also resisted the Tesselated rush last year, but due to being gifted some Spin Cycle I ended up purchasing the vest pattern. Based on podcasts, I was fully prepared to hate the mosaic knitting experience. Much to my surprise, I was so captivated by the amazing FABRIC that I was creating, and I found that the mosaic experience was NOT taxing and was really enjoyable. My only dislike is that it's bottom up - I have a larger chest so it's often difficult for me to gauge how long to make things when making bottom up and I can't try on as easily - so I actually had to go back, pick up and knit DOWN at the bottom because it was too short. Give it a try - and if you LOVE your yarn you will be so amazed by the fabric it creates and how the Spincycle blends with the other yarns.
This is amazing! I’ve also heard such mixed reviews on the Tesselated, but I love the look of the pattern, so I’m going to take the leap. I agree that I don’t love bottom up. My way of dealing with that has been to do a provisional cast on and then come back to add length if I need it. I wonder if I can do that with this piece. I far prefer top down as well!
Parenting, YIKES. My daughter had her 15 year relationship implode about this time last year. She was blindsided, heartbroken, financially screwed and left with the car and the cat. I was a complete mess. I still feel physically sick when I think about it. She is doing alright and I am taking her to the UK for her birthday. I am proud of how well she has done, but honestly I am still reeling. I have 3 kids -youngest 29 and my daughter is 45! Parenting never ends. Thank god for the knitting!
Hi Cydney. Your daughter is so lucky to have you. I really think its easier to handle our own pain than witness the pain of our children. I just keep reminding myself that this is life, and no one is spared. It’s just so brutal!! Have a fantastic time in the UK together!! What a lovely opportunity to make more memories. You’re an inspiration to me. 💚
Thanks for your thoughtful parent talk. It is a struggle, but we are there to give them help developing a repertoire of ways to deal with life’s challenges, right? As to Andrea Mowry’s sweater-I don’t love it either. It looks boxyand frumpy, and generally I’m not a fan of the dropped shoulder construction. It’s just not a flattering shape…certainly not when you’ve got some extra pounds rolling around in there 😊 Thanks again for your podcast. I really love that (in knitting and life) you share the good and the bad. Life ain’t perfect. Neither is our knitting. Take care and I hope your next week is a bit easier!
Hi Yael! So nice to hear your thoughts. I love the way you put this-we are giving them different tools to use in life when we guide them through struggles. I often think that I’m modeling standing up for themselves when I help them. When they get older, they will be much better able to do it for themselves, and to know that they are worth standing up for. Life is indeed far from perfect, but the trials of parenting have definitely forced me to become stronger. Thank goodness for knitting!! 😘
hi Lydia!! Thanks for watching! Get yourself some Bad Egg-it’s such a unique colorway in the yarn world. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’m almost reluctant to knit with it because I don’t want to use it up!
I haven’t finished my Tesselated from last year. I tend to let any mosaic projects sit. They are just so slow moving. My advice would be that I’m a bit disappointed with how slowly the colours are changing on mine, so I would choose a different yarn in your case. I LOVE the Framed design, but I am a non-quilter quilt lover so it’s really ideal for me. Plus, it’s not mosaic. 😂
Im excited to get your feedback on the Tesselated. I watch a ton of podcasts and i feel like the overwhelming feeling is that is such a tedious SLOG. I know how important the process is for you. So many struggled with finishing it, im really looking forward to your take! Either way, its not for me 😅 Love your bookclub cardigan.
Hello, I made the Tessellated Vest and used a solid color in place of Spin cycle as I do not tend to gravitate to my “colorful “ sweaters. That said it was slightly and I think a color change would have been more motivating. With your love of color I’d switch gears with the Spin Cycle.
Oh fun!! I’m so jealous that you got to go to the actual store! That’s definitely a dream for me, but I’m going to have to start saving my yarn budget now 😂
I love the Framed sweater! I don’t love the sample, I think the spin cycle overwhelms the colorwork motif. My plan is to spin for this sweater with a much more subtle color change 😊
Yes to all of it! Especially mint green-that is one of my favorites and honestly I didn’t even think of that. Going to look at that combo right now! Thank you so so much!!
I absolutely love that spincycle highlighter yellow you chose!! I want it too! I think a navy or another blue would pair well with it for the tessalated sweater. I think you might be over the Rhinebeck sweater because you recently knit the heirloom cardigan, which has a similar vibe? Also, I am knitting the folklore sweater for my swiftie daughter for her 15th birthday and I am loving the cables! I am also using Cascade 220 super wash. I have started cabling the smaller cables without a cable needle and it is helped me immensely! Have you tried it? Highly recommend! Loved listening to your podcast, as always. 🫶
Hello! I’m glad you love Bad Egg as much as I do! I definitely am going to pair it with something dark…navy or charcoal gray. There are so many options I keep going back and forth. As for cabling, yes I do all cables without a cable needle, and its fantastic. As usual, practice makes progress, and I’ve found a real fluency after a few projects. A cable needle really slows things down.
I love the Framed sweater and I’m knitting it right now! Using some stash DK weight and it’s so much fun to knit. Also I’m not going to Rhinebeck but I am going to Flock. Can’t wait to squeeze all the Spincycle ❤
Lovely! I’m glad you are enjoying the Framed sweater. I’m jealous that you are going to Flock. That’s the one I would be more inclined to go to as well! So many fantastic fiber companies in that area.
Yay for making the Tesselated! I'm working on mine right now and I'm so excited for it. I'm actually using a similar color to the neon for the mohair, with black and white for the other colors. The mohair definitely sticks to the other yarn, but it's a fun knit overall. I'm quite ready to get to the sleeves, though, but that's because it's been going on like three months of me working on this.
I’m so glad you are enjoying the Tesselated! This is one garment that seems to get a lot of mixed reviews. It’s such a unique piece though, both in look and technique.
This is what I hear, and I am worried it will be yarn chaos, but I think its such a unique piece I have to try it! It can’t be too terrible if you are coming back for more!
I think a taupe/brown fingering with a bright lilac/lavendar fluffy yarn would look great with bad egg. Moondrake has a really pretty purple in the fuwa fuwa. But I have been really digging icy purple with neon yellow lately. You could also use a varigated skein with neon yellow in it to see what colors you like best with it, maybe pull the colors from your favorite hedgehog colorway? Good luck! I don't love the Frame sweater but I could see it growing on me 😊
Your pod cast presentations are inspiring. Love your creative choices. Would you mind telling me the pattern you are wearing. Apologies if you mentioned it and I missed it,
I’m not even done watching the episode yet and I’m commenting…I love your book club…it’s on my list. I have to say that I feel that the AM Rhinebeck sweater this year is kind of …very close to the heirloom cardigan that you made. And I too love Andrea as a designer….I don’t like the shape of this years sweater. Too boxy for me…and in my opinion the outfit she shows with it is not doing it any favors so if I could see it with maybe jeans it might grow on me. I, too, have all of the yarn for the tessellated. OK, I will carry on.
I agree about her rhinebeck sweater! I was a little dismayed to see that she had used the exact same quilt motif that has been so big…that really surprised me. I definitely like the Heirloom Quilt cardigan way better!
As a grandmother I totally appreciate your parenting challenges. Do what feels best in your gut. I still struggle with parenting and my kids are 039 and 43!! Then there are the choices I make in grandparenting and as they get to the age of your children I'm reliving all the feelings you talk about. As far as this year's Rhinebeck sweater by Andrea Mowrey I agree with you. I love the quilt block portion of the garment yet I find the "frame" sections are jarring. I compare it to a lovely photo or painting displayed in the wrong frame. OUch, I don't mean to be negative but I think this was an effort to combine the latest quilt inspired knits with her everyday, boxy, cropped style sweater and it doesn't work for me. I thought about your tesselated color choices. I love the highlighter yellow and I suggest looking at the color wheel or grabbing some paint chips and playing with combos. Maybe a muted or dusty purple toned fluffy would take the "edge" off the neon?? What a fun decision to have to make!! The idea of a tv show club is the best, I'm coming. There is a weird show that I loved and I think would be a good family type show, Sweet Tooth on Netflix. It shocked me that I'd like it as I'm not an apocolyptic kind of girl. Great podcast, you are so articulate and thoughtful, not to mention talented!!
Hello Laurie!! I too anticipate the parenting struggles being never-ending!! Just because they get older, doesn’t mean we worry any less. I can’t even bear to think of adding grandchildren into that equation! My kids voted for adding a lavendar mohair to tone the yellow down as well. I wish I could make different swatches to see how it might look, but I don’t have any of these colors in my stash. I’ll keep you updated!
You pretty much know it when you see it and I think your doubts about your yarn choice, speaks volumes...I think you would be happier with a different choice.
For Andrea’s new sweater I think she made a fashion “faux pas” with the photos where she has it on top of her hand made dress. Everything is so flowy and the dress adds other colors and basically drowns the sweater. I think you would think otherwise if she had put the sweater over black leggings. I find it great but that’s the reason it’s not calling me I think. For your color choice I really love that yarn choice (bright yellow). I would pair it with a blue (deep) and a blue mohair. Make a swatch with it and see if you like your colors together. For your parenting “issues” I’m right with you. I would say that if you like who your kids are and what they are becoming then it’s because you have been making the right decisions so trust yourself. If you think you should intervene then do it. There are also degrees of intervention. Intervening doesn’t have to be fixing the whole issue by yourself. And anyway, let’s say your teen doesn’t know what university to choose, is the right thing to do just to let him take whatever based on crap ideas of the moment ? NO! That will have life long repercussions. It’s all about balance. Doesn’t mean you will choose the university for him.
I agree that Andrea Mowry didn’t do a great job selling that sweater with that outfit. Not sure what the thought process was! Your parenting advice helped me so much. I think my kids are incredible people, and since I have raised them, I really need to trust myself! It’s so hard to tolerate watching them struggle with the challenges of life. Somehow its so painful when you wish you could spare them any hurt at all. Lots of love to you. Thanks for listening.
A saying that's always stuck with me is, "A mom is only as happy as her saddest child." Boy, no truer words. My kids are grown and on their own, but it still holds true. Sometimes the only one that can still kiss it and make it better is Mom. Your kids will come to realize this. Right now they are at that age where they are trying to be independent and control their own lives and letting Mom in is seen as defeat. But inside they know that you are there - just in case. Also, I'm not a fan of the Framed sweater either 😉.
This saying rings in my ears often! It is so true! I feel like my husband can compartmentalize it all very effectively, but I can’t at all. My heart beats to their joys and sorrows. Whether this is healthy or not, we won’t ask!! ;) But I do feel like parenting has made me a much stronger person. I never thought I could feel such love and emotion for another person.
Well, re parenting involvement with teenagers and beyond: your urge to get involved is understandable, and sooner or later your children will learn not to share with you the things they REALLY do not want you to get involved... They will learn how to protect their privacy and dignity from you, not only because of your actual actions of involvement, but also from being aware of you being burdened with worries and with your struggles of self-containing you from involvement... There is not much what YOU can do about your urge to get involved, though. And your children feel it even if you do not act upon. It is just the way you are. As long as they tell you things, they are obviously not completely against of you getting involved. However, if you struggle with this, they will also eventually give up opportunity of discussing things with you... It would be interesting to know what was the dynamics with your parents when you were young (and even now), and the same for your husband's family dynamics :-)
Interesting thoughts! I always ask them for their permission before getting involved, and don’t even offer it unless they are struggling with something way over their heads. So grateful to have kids that communicate.
Thanks for the podcast, I really enjoy ALL of your content. It makes me laugh when you say you call the family over to look at your work but they really just can't appreciate it like other knitters - I soooooo get that! You just want everyone to share all your excitement but they don't get it (LOL). Your book club cardigan is just beautiful and the color is stunning. One day I'll be at that level of knitting - not quite there yet but like you, I take my knitting everywhere. Knitting (although relatively new to me) has been a great joy in my life. I have been a crocheter for a long time but just learning something new has struck a happy place in my life that I didn't really know I needed but now I'm obsessed. And friends....can't get through life without them! Like you, I love my family but friends provide you with an outlet that nobody else can. And as far as parenting - would'nt it be easy if we had an instruction manual - I used to tell my kids, they don't give you one when they're born so I'm doing the best I can. Mine are grown now but the fact that they still come to me for life advice makes me feel like I did something right. Even when my kids tuned me out back in the day, I know based on their decisions - they HEARD what I was saying. So just being a sounding board is sometimes enough - maybe they don't even want answers they just want to be heard, they know we can't fix everything but having you as their safe space to talk is HUGE! You're right every stage is important and oh so different-I'm now entering into the Grandma stage which should be fun but I'm sure will come with it's own challenges (like me keeping my mouth shut!🤣) Thanks again!
Hi Stephanie! Thank you for watching. I’m so glad you too feel the joy and comfort of knitting. You might think you are not ready for cables yet, but the big secret is that they really aren’t that hard! I think you should try them if you are drawn to it. Maybe a smaller project to build your confidence. Sari Nordlund has those beautiful collars that are a great way to dip your toe in. Thank you for your parenting wisdom. My goal in life is what you have-enough love and trust to be a sounding board for them even when they are grown. And I agree whole-heartedly-everyone, whether or adult or child, really just wants to be heard. We rarely can really fix anything, anyway. Lots of love to you. Thank you for your message. I love hearing from you guys 💜
I feel you on parenting, Lena. Your joy and pain comment brought me back to that little Rob Base tune… you might remember it? ruclips.net/video/phOW-CZJWT0/видео.htmlsi=ODhKCJweYFNh8x-5 Keep on stitching, mama.

Ooooh love your book club cardigan, I've just almost finished Winters Beach Cardigan and I'm loving the cables ❤
That one is so pretty as well. I’m not 100% sold on teh pockets on mine yet, but I have a long way until that!

I love the Framed sweater! I don’t love the sample, I think the spin cycle overwhelms the colorwork motif. My plan is to spin for this sweater with a much more subtle color change 😊
I love that Hannah! It’s lovely to be able to take something and make it your own. That way you are bringing your own creativity to it even more.
I love the combo of pastel mint green and neon yellow. Maybe with a white for the mo? Or neon yellow looks great with light grey!
I am using Cascade 220 for the Master knitting program, Very impressed by it. Yes I would use it again. Oh, and That yellow is next level!
Cascade 220 is just a steal!
I also made the Tesselated vest and I’m making the cardigan too ! Loved the mosaic knitting, it’s addictive but a bit messy knitting it but worth it
This is what I hear, and I am worried it will be yarn chaos, but I think its such a unique piece I have to try it! It can’t be too terrible if you are coming back for more!
Khaki or a muted pink might be a good third colour to tone down the brightness of the green?
I think a taupe/brown fingering with a bright lilac/lavendar fluffy yarn would look great with bad egg. Moondrake has a really pretty purple in the fuwa fuwa. But I have been really digging icy purple with neon yellow lately. You could also use a varigated skein with neon yellow in it to see what colors you like best with it, maybe pull the colors from your favorite hedgehog colorway? Good luck! I don't love the Frame sweater but I could see it growing on me 😊
Hi there! My kids had the same idea as you-neon yellow with lavendar mohair for the Tessellated. So I think that’s the color combo!
I worked on my book club cardigan while watching this. Also using cascade 220 😅
Look at us! We’ll be twins. What colorway did you use?
@@AnotherKnittingPod the colorway is called stratosphere, basically an electric blue 😅
The Framed sweater. I think it’s too busy and the solid contrast is to bold . Love the Tessalates pullover.
Ya…its not my jam. I am curious to see everyone’s interpretation of it, I’m sure there will be some beautiful pieces in there.
What do you think about a royal blue going with your bright yellow yarn? I think that might work. 🙂
Your pod cast presentations are inspiring. Love your creative choices. Would you mind telling me the pattern you are wearing. Apologies if you mentioned it and I missed it,
Thank you so much for your kind words! I think it was the Ranunculus sweater…I can’t quite remember but I’m almost certain.
@@AnotherKnittingPod Many thanks for your reply. You look gorgeous in it. Again, my sincere thanks.
Hello from Swansea, Illinois.
Hello Janet! Hope you are well! 💜
Maybe black mohair? Love the flourescent
Yes black would really offset the neon!
Re the colour for your jumper have you seen Overboard the new Spincycle shade? 😍x
Oh yes…I love going on their website and ogling all the new colorways! Overboard is a stunner 🥰
You pretty much know it when you see it and I think your doubts about your yarn choice, speaks volumes...I think you would be happier with a different choice.
It could definitely go either way! We’ll see where I end up 😘 Hope you are well!
Leena, have you read The Heaven and Earth Grocery store by James McBride. It amazing.
One of my favorite books of all time! James McBride is just brilliant.
Love the Rheinbeck sweater but the shape isn’t right for me. I’m hoping she uses the pattern for a cardigan or shawl x
Yes, I’m sure she will use it in several more patterns. It would be a cute hat too.
@@AnotherKnittingPod Yes, communication is precious! You are obviously a wonderful thoughtful mother
I don't really like the Framed sweater pattern either, just not my style!
Enjoy your podcast.
Thank you Helen!
I feel you on parenting, Lena. Your joy and pain comment brought me back to that little Rob Base tune… you might remember it? ruclips.net/video/phOW-CZJWT0/видео.htmlsi=ODhKCJweYFNh8x-5 Keep on stitching, mama.
Not a fan of the Rheinbeck sweaterI agree with the idea that it looks like your crocheted sweater
Me neither! I don’t like to be negative but it definitely is not one of her stronger patterns.
