Well, then I have to break it to ya then. Back in 1985 at Joe's Garage, Pantera was a glam band, did wear spandex, and Darrell (wasn't called Dimebag yet) even had glitter in his hair, and YES once they tired of Motley Crue, Def Leopard and Doken covers, they finally started playing Metallica cover tunes as well.
Sorry kids, I stand as an eye witness of those days in Joe's Garage. I was there and watched it all evolve.
Yes, it's true. They played Metallica covers tunes before they were ever known of outside of Texas.

They stole the Exhorder sound
Thought Stern meant White Zombie and Pantera at first
😅 I'm still laughing
Pantera created a whole genre of metal called groove
Pantera over metallica any day.
Let’s get something straight. Pantera in the 90’s would blow Metallica off the stage. The Pantera mosh pit in the 90’s would destroy a Metallica mosh pit. Most, not all, but most Metallica fans are not real metal heads. They don’t listen to the real heavy shit.
But Metallica was already doing major concerts in the mid-1980s while Pantera was still just doing small-time clubs.
I was there every time they played in Joe's Garage in those days in '84 - '85.
@@tommy_14 The reason their earlier albums never sold well was because they were produced on a private label by Jerry Abbott himself (Darrell and Vinnie's dad) from his own very small recording studio and his own money. And Pantera were still just teenagers then. Try to understand that an individual has no chance to mass produce and mass market an album. Could you afford that? Seriously?
Do you have any idea how the music business works? I don't think so. lol!
It's only possible with a major record label contract. That's how the music business works, kid.
It had nothing to do with their popularity. In fact, if they hadn't been so popular back then in the early days as a "glam band" they wouldn't have even gotten the chance to later win a major record label contract.
How do I know? Because I was there in their scene back then 40 years ago, and even visited their studio in Pantego, long before your time.
Get a clue about how things work in the music business and stop making stuff up about their story as you go along, okay?
Sorry but calling metallica fans fake metalheads just because it's not heavy enough is the dumbest thing i've ever heard. If i use that logic against you you're a fake metalhead for not listening to slayer, slayer is many times heavier than pantera.
Also, '86 metallica were freaking monsters, playing songs live at almost 2x the original speed, and James spewing out the vocals with seething anger. You're horribly ignorant for calling metallica fans fake metalheads, you probably only listened to the new albums. Heavy is not everything
They did in Moscow. No one could've followed Pantera after that gig.

Dime was good friends with James and Metallica. I bet the whole time big mouth, drugged up Phill was up there slurring his garbage, Dime wanted to choke him out.
I saw Pantera live 5 times from 1996 to 2001. Phil ruined 3 of those shows by being so effed up he could barely slur into the mic. Rest of the band was tighter than the spandex they used to wear. Phil was the weak link live after 1995. Too much H being shot up. He will even admit it nowadays.
Lars was thinking "I better speak on this before that line wears off"
Dude I was thinking the same thing haha
Rite dude is all geeked out .😅
Yeah, he's totally on coke. 😂
@@massivemike7358 He's so enthusiastic 😂, like he might try to sell you a milkshake machine and then leave with the right to your store
@Mo Dev reference to the Founder? 😂
Metallica will never bring the same intensity that pantera brought to the stage . Metallica is great but pantera regardless what bullshit comes out of Phil’s mouth they are amazing
Pantera is groove metal not thrash, but then again, Metallica hasn't had a thrash album in decades.
I was at one of the Pantera/White Zombie tour concerts. Absolutely NO ONE left when Phil badmouthed Metallica.
I was at that tour in 96 at Redrocks Amphitheater in Colorado.... everyone applauded Phil for telling the truth.
@@WD-sr8qz I was at show at the Gorge amphitheater in Washington during that tour. VERY good times!
Of course they didn't.
Maybe he said "laughed"
@@concernedliberal4453 love the Gorge. 4 grams of shrooms at 7 pm for the night shows!!!!
This is a year after Load was released. Not like Phil was way off base
Way off base
Load may be in the top 3 best albums.
@@kellyjandrews lmao stop it
Load is sick af 😊
Cliff burton gone. Metallica died.
Phil is the man! He would beat all the asses in that studio, I guarantee not one of them would say shit to his face back then 😂
Pantera may have been glam, but they were WAAAY more metal when "Load" came out.
Lars has got to be one of the richest drummers in the world and everyone craps on his playing 😅
Cuz he sucks at drumming
The guy who wore a feather boa, black nail polish and eyeliner in the "Until it Sleeps" video slamming Pantera for looking "glam", that's rich.
What are you talking about? They got haircuts like old nerds before the album dropped.
@StringPullerz also in the early early days
And Until it sleeps is still a better song than at least 75% of Panteras discography
@@nbl95 you are fucking insane bro. Call up lars and go blow him
@@nbl95 your joking right? Collective Soul put out better music than that shit and they suck
Gotta love how Howard Brings up Spandex..Like HELLO Lars wore Spandex All the time when he Drummed
Coward stern
Kirk too 😂
Quiet honestly, Metallica didn't write one single masterpiece after 1991 (the black album). I still don't understand why they are considered as pioneers of metal ? Really good marketing probably ?
Pantera took Metallica and stepped it up 10 notches!!!
I saw Pantera and White Zombie together in 1997. Zombie was singing to a backing track and Pantera was absolutely awesome.
Of course. I love Rob Zombie but he can’t sing.
Plz tell me you’re joking…you’re telling me his vocals in Astro creep aren’t really his??
@@Mikael11Fior I saw him singing with the microphone held up to his mouth. Then he lowered it to his waste and the words were still coming out the same as before. He was doing some singing but there was definitely a track singing along with him. I just had never seen a “rock” singer with a backing track. I always thought that shit was for the Britney Spears of the world.
War of the Gargantuans right ?? I was there. Eye hate God opened. Pantera absolutely killed it
I was there no one left.. in fact the crowd went crazy wild when Phil said that because we All felt the same way...!
PanterA hailed the flag 🇺🇸 for 'true metal' in the 90's. RIP Abbott brothers 🤘🏻
bro Pantera saved metal from almost being dead
No, I don't know why people still think that Pantera was the only metal in the 90s, you had White Zombie, Prong, Helmet, Vision of Disorder, Orange 9mm, Biohazard, Korn, Deftones, Coal Chamber, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, RATM, Clawfinger, Downset, Dog Eat Dog, Incubus, Faith No More, Amorphis, Cannibal Corpse, In Flames, all the thrash metal bands in the 80s was there (Yes, I know this when these bands were starting to experimenting with new sounds, but there's nothing wrong with that) Neurosis, Sepultura, the black metal scene, Fear Factory, Melvins, Crowbar, Acid Bath, Eyehategod, Machine Head, SOAD, Nothingface, Earth Crisis, Powerman 5000, Limp Bizkit, P.O.D., Body Count and many other bands. Metal was not dying in the 90s, this is just mainstream media being mainstream media.
Half of those aren’t even close to being as good or heavy or impactful as pantera. Coal chamber?? 😂
@@xijingping3899Uh, some of those bands were impactful. Pantera fans lol man you guys are a special breed.
@@bradlybuttcliff2665 And you are just special. I said HALF those bands aren’t AS impactful as Pantera. Obviously bands like korn, SOAD, sepultura, nine inch nails, ratm and every other band that you mentioned are impactful. It’s just that a lot of those bands wouldn’t even exist if not for pantera. Fucking dyslexic
Ok, take it easy. Yes, Metallica is the best, hands down, but Pantera was an awesome natal band. They sold plenty and I’d be very surprised if even 1 person left just because Phil made a dumb comment about Metallica. Phil has said countless stupid things and we all just roll with it because he was an awesome front man.
Respect to Phil. That dude is just super passionate about heavy metal. Something Lars lost in like 1990.
Nah, he came from a very rich family, always was the sell out business type. Feel bad for the rest of the band that have to put up with that personality 24/7, although it made them very rich, it would drive most people nuts.
@@brenndanrahe4978you are absolutely correct 💯
Spot on,after the haircut Metallica changed.
After the Black Album,I barely recognized Metallica.
This was during Reload ... I am with Phil Anselmo on this one. Lol
Pantera killed it in the 90s
@@taylorfarr6 it was downhill after trendkill
@@oopsydaizi3s824 I still love Reinventing the Steel, but I get what you're saying
How is making a risky turn in music "selling out", trying to remake master or black album would be them selling out
@@papikrabz3592 Black album was a sell out too. They shouldn't have called it "Metallica" they should have called it "Bob Rock."
Lara Ulrich how dare you, you don't have the balls to die for 3 minutes. Phil speaks for those like me that rolled that dice
Also who goes to see white zombie over Pantera.
Lars was high on coke.
It’s not like he was the poster boy for not using drugs.
Pantera has an actual good drummer
I never listen to Metallica. And I'm a Metalhead. Pantera is way better.
That's such total B.S.
Their drummer that they used to have, Mr. Vinnie Paul, was excellent.
May he continue to rest in wonderful peace with his brother, Dimebag.❤
@@justinneff7052I only like there early stuff
No they didn't. they wish they had someone as good as Lars. He could have fixed there terrible songwriting too.
Fun fact: Metallica was going to fire Lars before Cliff died.. Lars is one of the worst drummers to ever reach commercial success thanks to the pity of hetfield. Pantera had a great drummer, and Phil would rip Lars' head off if he were man enough to talk like this to him
Lars might identify as an Hills teenage girl
Pantera saved heavy metal for another 8 years as Metallica was doing duets with grandmas.
Coming from the man who got Bob Rock to produce for them after hearing Dr Feelgood.
BINGO!
Good one 🤣
And then went on to create their most successful album to this date propelling them to Hall of Fame status? Lol. Idk sounds like the right decision to me don’t you think? 😅
@@jdpazmino2010that’s what selling out is. And with that logic.. they would make Taylor Swift the best musician of all time…
No it wouldn't be cause she would have to go up against contenders in her genre, in her space. Can't bring her in the conversation we're talking about metal. As far as selling out goes, its your opinion sure. Just sounds too closed minded to me though, because just because of the Black Album's success doesn't mean it's not true genuine metal and a great heavy album. Both can be true at the same time. Metallica delivered on many levels, the success speaks for itself. @@josephpe90
So if Pantera is so crappy then why is Metallica touring with them RIGHT NOW?? I’m going to the Metallica/Pantera/FFDP show in Seattle next month. Hey Lars, I dare you to talk that shit to Phil’s face!! Pantera puts on a bad ass show, I saw them like 6 times back in the 90s and they tore shit up!! 🤘🤘🤘
Lars, the worst thing to ever happen to Metal.
Lars vs. Vinnie is like comparing an Applebees line cook to Marco Pierre White.
Vinnie was good but not on the level that you're stating. He's not even a top twenty all-time metal drummer.
@RC
Vinnie is one of the greatest metal drummers of all time. He would be on the MT Rushmore of metal drummers. YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT FROM SHOESHINE
I agree with the other commenter and what some metal magazines have posted, hes consistent and a perfect fit for his brother but not one of the best or great IMP either
Well yeah Lars is a much more known drummer
Not when it comes to songwriting. Vinnie didnt write half of Kill em All, Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning and Justice for All.
