Thank you Sammy Hagar for sticking up for Mike Anthony to Eddie's uncalled for remarks. Eddie was good at 2 things, playing guitar and attacking people who didn't deserve it.
@2216sammy Yes, he was kind to people who didn't know him. To the people closest to him, he treated them like crap. Look at all the things that he did to Mike. Are they untrue? Making him sign away his rights to the band? How about signing away his future earnings to the band? Also, did you ever hear Michael saying anything bad about Eddie? Come on! Not every journalist had to be lying? I don't get involved in things like this on RUclips. However, Michael is one person that I will defend simply because he is loyal to a fault.
@2216sammy Dude, you're living in a fantasy world. There are mountains of evidence and first-person testimony of what a jerk Eddie could be, and was, to many people close to him. Alex in some ways was even worse. People love to talk about what a fool DLR was, but go look at what an ass Eddie made of himself at Dime's memorial.

Good point. I saw them in 1987. Stood at the stage. They never even looked at each other. Dee Dee would look over and nod or make eye contact with the band. There was NO communication that I saw between these guys.
The Van Halen brothers didn't like anybody. I realize Roth did them wrong, but Sammy and Anthony deserved better. Glad they are still together rockin'.

Eddie probably is one of the 2 most famous guitarists in history, I think Diamond Dave probably deserves the most credit for Van Halen being discovered because he is positively the greatest frontman to take a stage and there was most likely thousands guitarists as good as Eddie who just didn't have Diamond Dave getting all the girls to come watch him and where there are girls, the guys will follow. I guess I was 10 when Dave left so all I got to see were videos and VHS concerts. Sammy said Dave wasn't worth a fuck but Dave always did his job, didn't he? You commented that Dave did Van Halen wrong, and all I remember from back then was how they'd talk shit on each other in Circus and the rest of those magazines so can you please fill me in on what you meant by Dave did them dirty? Michael Anthony was and is a solid, fantastic, bassist and his background vocals were an integral part of Van Halen's sound. Eddie was a trail blazing, amazing, musician, but obviously his personal issues affected the way he treated other people. That's a sad part of his legacy.
You can easily make 10 of these videos. A few more classic examples of band infighting - The Eagles, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Crosby vs SNY, Arty & Simon, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Tina & Ike Turner, Morrisey & Johnny Marr, Smashing Pumpkins, The Police, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Lou Gramm and Mick Jones, Tommy Shaw and Dennis de Young to name just a few...there are loads more
Roger Waters and David Gilmour/Rick Wright took the cake. Also Roger fired Syd in 1968 and then fired Wright in 1979. As far as Shaw vs DeYoung, it was Tommy who has "Small Man Syndrome" where his ego got taller with power and money.

After he died there were so many tributes to him "he was the warmest, sweetest guy" etc. I tend to believe what people say about others when they're still alive.
Eddie was a perfectionist when it came to the music he played and composed. He was an excellent musician. He played much more than the guitar. However he never realized that not all musicians were on par with his idea of perfection.
@@nikkibest5010Oftentimes, those two go hand-in-hand, unfortunately. It’s a strange relationship: A person can’t have an on-stage band without bandmates, but the writer (oftentimes the lead singer) wants the song to sound a certain way. A multi-instrumentalist can do that stuff in a studio, but not so much onstage, at least not without a backing track.
That's a good way to look at it as far as why things happened the way they did. Edward's a lot like Paul McCartney in that his perfectionism can grate on the other people in the band, and I can see how Ed would look at it like, "I had to teach Mike all his bass parts.", mostly because he wasn't letting Mike contribute any of his own ideas. Ed did write the songs, so he's within his rights to operate that way, but it's not good for team-building.
@snickpickle I have the utmost respect for Eddie Van Halen's ingenuity. His musicianship was impeccable. I don't think however that he was an easy guy to be around.
Depends. Tommy Lee and Nikki Six didn't age badly, and Ozzy and Keith Richards have been around for more than they should. At the end, everything comes down to genetics.
3 common factors - everyone was upset and miserable, everyone was talented, and everyone was taking too many drugs. Removing the drugs, they would of enjoyed many more years of success.
From personal experience, you're so correct. Especially when you get into heavy hobbies like cocaine and opiates. Even if you're relatively disciplined enough to make your gigs on time, if you don't have drugs, you're not playing well, if you have drugs, you usually take too much and you're not playing well. And then stick 4 or 5 guys in a van together, with broken air conditioning in Florida in August. Or people are on different drugs/alcohol and criticizing the guys on the conflicting drugs. The irony is, the more successful you get, the more damage you do to yourself and each other. I was afraid I couldn't play if I cleaned up, and just the opposite happened. My musicianship was better than ever. It's unfortunate but it's not a new problem. First off, when and where you are going to work, everyone else is off work and heading there to party. And, especially in the lower rungs of the entertainment industry, playing on stage is the high point of your day, the rest of your day/evening can be boring, lonely, and depressing (especially if you're trying to keep a relationship together and don't want to 'socialize' with the wonderfully charming women you often meet. And ironically, the most destructive vice I experienced dealing with in a band was alcohol. But regardless of the poison, musicians have been familiar the struggles of addiction way back when the term "rockin' and rollin' meant something much different than it came to mean. There's really nothing new under the sun. Except the Internet...
Except when you realize that Simmons and Stanley for example are drug and alcohol free and are a massive pain in the ass, they were responsible for most of the problems. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull never took drugs either but drove off literally every band member with his behaviour. Do we need to talk about Morissey?
You know, it's sort of interesting that the one you said was most famous (that being Journey) was the only one here that I had no recollection of having read or heard about. Then again, I am not a fan of the band so maybe that's why. Awesome video, appreciate the work and level of detail that went into it.
Journey has had a very long career and sold many units (75mil+) - but even then, they are so utterly UTTERLY dwarved by Aerosmith, Guns'n'Roses or Metallica .. even playing devil's advocat I find no metric that would support the 'most famous' claim. Personally, I'd probably put them over Pantera and Skid Row, and that's about it ...

Ok, it was great seeing the original four on stage together again. I remember the crowd going absolutely bat shit crazy when they came out. But like you stated, it went downhill very quickly. And yes, It was disrespectful to Beck.
Beacuse he was less than a 2 years in that band (Metallica) and Elefson spent most of his life in Megadeth. Sure he can't erase all that work and not play it anymore.
As they say: NEVER GO INTO BUSINESS WITH FRIENDS OR FAMILY. Theres a resson why bands and TV shows never last more than ten years without going to shit. Don't blame a riff between Axl and Slash for the problems with G&R. I drove my wife two hours to Toronto to see them at Exhibition Stadium in 1990. Axl was 2-1/2 hours late then he was terrible. The sound guy turned up Slash and turned down Axl so his roasted and hungover sound didn't hurt the sound too much but there was only so much they could do. Because of Axl it was the worst concert I ever saw by an A-list band. I paid $120 for 2 tickets and that was a lot of money back then. We were furious. We drove 4 hours round trip for this? I still want my money back!
When I saw them in ‘88, Axl was on time (though he ran off the stage), but Slash was so strung out on heroin he could barely play and Axl called him out on it. “Some members of this band need to get off Mr. Brownstone”. Still worth it
Van Halen was all about rock ‘n’ roll. David Lee Roth was all about himself. It’s just a shame that they couldn’t get along I guess because I love the old-school Van Halen.😢 I have no love from Metallica anymore
What you say about Roth is true, but if you do some research behind he scenes you will find out Eddie and Alex were just as big of jerks, just in different ways. Alcoholism was destroying both of them, and the way they treated Michael Anthony was criminal.
I spent most of my teen years In Love with Eddie Van Halen. I wish I never knew he said that shat about Micheal Anthony and Sammy. I don't believe a person on this planet could handle being around Roth without forcefully shutting his mouth. What a Puke, however I love the music and it wouldn't be what it is without DLR.
@2216sammy I have heard other musicians verify that Mikey struggled. It just sucks that Eddie felt the need to publicly embarrass him. Micheal seems like such a gentle soul. Dude can sing as good as any front man of the era and the back up vocals was part of what made Van Halan so awesome. I often wonder why Mike didn't front. I saw Van Halen for the first time in Portland, OR on the 1984 tour. During the show, DLR brought some girl up on the stage and was comparing her to Valerie Bertinelli. Eddie looked livid. I was not impressed.
David Lee Roth was insufferable but Eddie Van Halen never did understand that the frontman will always get the attention and that showmanship is as much a part of rock n roll as the music itself.
Ever heard of the band Norma Jean? They’re a hardcore band with 9 studio albums over 24 years. The band has been a revolving door of musicians with none of the original players that it started with. 2:15 when they bought Sammy back for the 2004 reunion, Eddie only allowed Michael Anthony back in the band if he signed away his royalties, his rights to the Van Halen band name, split of ticket revenue, merchandise and took a massive pay cut to go on tour. I can't believe there was no mention of Simon and Garfunkel, and I'm not seeing any commenters mention them either. Michael Anthony was and is a solid, fantastic, bassist and his background vocals were an integral part of Van Halen's sound. Eddie was a trail blazing, amazing, musician, but obviously his personal issues affected the way he treated other people. That's a sad part of his legacy.
No. His bass playing is a notch above Frank Carlton Serafino Feranna Jr.
His background vocals were one of my favorite parts of VH. He's working his magic with Sammy and adds a lot to his band.

Roger Waters and David Gilmour/Rick Wright took the cake. Also Roger fired Syd in 1968 and then fired Wright in 1979.
As far as Shaw vs DeYoung, it was Tommy who has "Small Man Syndrome" where his ego got taller with power and money.

Honestly Eddie: If everyone around you leaves after beefing with you, maybe you're the problem
After he died there were so many tributes to him "he was the warmest, sweetest guy" etc. I tend to believe what people say about others when they're still alive.
EVH=No Fun. A big time narcissist.
Eddie was a perfectionist when it came to the music he played and composed. He was an excellent musician. He played much more than the guitar. However he never realized that not all musicians were on par with his idea of perfection.
He was extremely talented but a huge pre madonna who's ego ruined every relationship he had.
I can understand Eddie's fued with DLR. Eddie wanted to focus on great music. Roth was nothing but a hyperactive clown.
@snickpickle I have the utmost respect for Eddie Van Halen's ingenuity. His musicianship was impeccable. I don't think however that he was an easy guy to be around.
