@Karell Thanks for great info. One thing I just discovered, after a lot of cutting my chain brake would no longer lock in the operating position. It turns out that after you remove the cover, bar and chain, there's a plastic plate beneath those. It's held in place by six T15 screws - remove those and the whole plate comes off, revealing the bar adjustment mechanism and the brake mechanism. The rubber boot around the brake doesn't make a perfect seal, and mine was jammed full of damp sawdust. Cleaned that all out and the brake works fine now. Maybe the topic of another video? I didn't find this procedure anywhere else on RUclips.
Thank you for this information. I love my chainsaw and use it often. It has recently started smoking, stopping, and popping off the chain which is highly frustrating and eats up a lot of time. I cleaned mine out which helped then went back to cutting. It stopped smoking, but then the washer above the sprocket broke in half. When I looked at the sprocket it was grooved out on the top half. I'm assuming that the clogged brake and sprocket worked together to cause the smoke. I just ordered replacement parts so crossing my fingers that I can fix my chainsaw. It's been a workhorse.
If you strip it down a bit more, separate the body you can access the oil tank which is poorly manufactured get some gasket sealant and seal round all the parts connecting to the tank, oil leaks stop. Also access the gearbox you will find all the lubricant in one corner while gears are dry so spread it out and will run much smoother. There is a full vid on here on how to strip it down and reassemble, easier than you’d think
I don’t agree Somehow you didn’t think it was right and went looking for a solution or more info - and found one The dummies are the ones that unquestionably return the tool 😀 Glad I could help
Hello from Canada. I just bought a 20v Dewalt chainsaw (actually a replacement for on that someone took from my parked car via a smashed rear window. ) So I'm not a newbie to chainsaws nor Dewalt. Yet I encountered the same problem and I did not want to force the chain brake. But I went straight to your video and OMG you had the answer. Now I feel rather sheepish for such a simple solution. Thanks again and back to cutting!
Thanks mate I was worried about my saw after spend huge amount of money for my new Dewalt chain saw you explained very simple and easy way thanks again stay blessed
Hello my friend. I have a close friend of mine, like this Dewalt chainsaw. He had no problems. He just uses it very carefully. However, it is normal for such tools to malfunction. The important thing is that it does not cause frequent and chronic failures. Dewalt products are also among the least problematic brands in the world. I watched a good informative video. Thank you for this useful information. See you. stay healthy and safe. Merry Christmas. Greetings.
I thought my chainsaw was going to have a smoking issue in the future but I was just using the brake properly. Mainly, I did not know to release the pressure of the oil and how to properly store my chainsaw. Thank you!
Thank-you for making this informative video. I received this chain saw from my son for Christmas(2021)and could not get it to work unless I held the brake in the forward position(1 soft click). After watching this video…no problem. DeWalt needs to hire you to write and produce their manuals as this was not made clear at all in the paperwork that came with my chainsaw. You just saved both my son and myself the time of having to drive back to Home Depot to exchange this. Thanks again.
Thanks muchly, this is hard to explain in print. Push forward on the hand guard all the way and then pull back all the way and release. Now you can power the saw, press the safety and then squeeze the power trigger. You can also install a 5/8 - inch plumbing ring in the slot on the oil plug to stop leaks. And replace the 12" bar with a new 14 or 16 inch bar and a new chain. Quiet, light weight, wonderful saw.
Holy shit...thank you man...mine was smoking like crazy I kept trying to adjust the chain tightness and figured the oil wasn't doing something properly.
Thank you so much! I almost didn't purchase the Dewalt 20V Chainsaw due to reviews about leaky lubricant oil. However, after seeing your video, I did exactly what you recommended, and absolutely no leaky oil. Fabulous!!!
Thanks bro, I was getting so pissed off. I just pulled it new out of the box, put put chain oil in it and it was smoking when trying to cut. I thought it was a defective motor and let off right away. I was ready to send it back. Now I'm cutting logs a foot in diameter with no problem. Dry or wet. Thanks again !
When you said to pull it ALLL the way back, and you did that face, it reminded me 100% of the face my dad does when he does the big reveal to my "these tools aren't working properly" questions
I agree! I too only have DeWalt electric tools. After I had used my tool a while the “kick back” guard had not been activated and when I started to use it “with guard forward” the motor wouldn’t run. IMO there was not enough emphasis on the fact that IF THE SAW DOESN’T OPERATE WHEN THE TRIGGER IS PULLED, ACTIVATE THE KICKBACK GUARD. When all you have used in the past is a gas operated saw, the kickback guard has to be pushed forward to start it. I wound up buying a second saw, which I’m okay with because of this failure to understand the operation.
It’s crazy that I never caught up to that distinction of forward gas and back electric! Thank you for that observation, I’m not a big user of gas chainsaws so never registered that. Happy I could help
Thanks for the great info... I have been using chainsaws for years and already knew that trick, however my Dewalt 20V started giving me problems after someone else used it excessively (I thing cutting roots in a ditch) and acting like it was cutting out... so now I will check that microswitch to see if it is the problem...
thanks for the help I was doing it wrong they need better introductions when you just get it out of the box just a simple link to a video like your would be great i am glad i was not the only one.
I just got the DCCS620 and immediately had the bar oil leak as well as the smoking. I was initially pretty pissed as I am a Dewalt guy as well. Dewalt actually advised to empty bar oil every time you use it! Get real! This makes a lot of sense, Karell. Thanks for the video -- ya saved me from chucking this thing in the trash and getting a gas husky.
I have a different model, but it smokes when on high load even cold. Of course, the break is disengaged. It has been under warranty due to a faulty break and the smoking issue.
Thanks for the video. Has there been reports of that safety brake switch going bad? Mine will run like 2 seconds and die as if the safety switch cuts it off. Like the battery just died, as they do not slow down, they just drop off dead when the battery is depleted. I have tried a number of 5ah and 8ah batteries. I'm bummed, as I love the saw. This shut off is similar to when you try to start it with pressure on the chain. It seems to have a safety switch for that purpose as well. Maybe I need to clean all the moving parts, it may be gummed up. Thanks again!
Hey dude I used a 5Ah battery and it lasts for a bit over 1 hr of non stop cutting The oil will usually be empty before the battery If you pull the brake all the way back and it doesn’t need to be held like in the video you did it right and it should not stop Did you try different batteries? I find anything under 5Ah will die crazy fast so I avoid Hopefully this helps you out
@@TheWoodenRider Yes, I have had great luck with this saw for over a year. Just went to use it yesterday, and could not get it to move more than a second or two. I may check the four wires at the battery connector, as I see that is a common one for dewalt tools that have heavy vibration. I have a small collection of 5ah and one big 8ah, that I use on the chainsaw, pole saw and blower
I was so worried about crunching the safety switch! Ha, I should have known with a Dewaltasaurus that it would be that way, Thanks Mahn!! Going to get some firewood now.
I have the 670 with the 16" in bar. It smokes like crazy, will not cut as well as my DeWalt 8" pole saw (using the same battery). I get one smoky cut per charge on the 9AH battery. The click trick is definitely not the problem here. The saw is new and has done this from the first cut.
I dropped a 16in wide tree with this saw today, took a long time to get it, but hey it worked, I going to get the new 20in flexvolt in spring if my health and finances are still good

The bar has a hole positioned directly above the threaded stud that holds the bar tight. This is where the oil enters the bar groove. Make sure this hole is not clogged with sawdust.
I just got back from HD after returning the first one. I come home and try again with the same smoke issue. Now that this 2nd one is smoking too, I know I did something wrong. Appreciate the feedback, obviously like American media I have to check my sources before I relay information which wasn’t done here. You’ve commented respectfully and accurately and I thank you for that.
And the brake has been fully pulled back? Have you used it with the brake half engaged? You may have damaged the motor Maybe there is a defect A Dewalt repair centre may be the best solution for you - or call Dewalt and use the warranty
Well I feel like an idiot, thanks for making this video about the safety. I'm almost ashamed to admit that the safety tricked me but this just kept me from taking it back.
Mine has an issue with the trigger switch and it’s only a little over a year old (out of warranty). I figured I would just replace the switch. After checking several parts sites, I found out that you can only buy the switch as part of an assembly that includes the motor! Cost is $115 plus S&H. Hope y’all don’t get a turd like the one I got. UPDATE: I was wrong about the warranty. It’s 3 years, so repair to the switch was covered under warranty. I sent it to the repair center and now UPS has lost the saw in transit. I filed a claim with the carrier and now Dewalt is sending me a new saw. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.
Haha that's funny that the two most common complaints are due to user error. Looks like a beefy little unit for what its intended use is for.👍🏽 Hope you and your family have an awesome Xmas, mate 🎄 Take care .
My dewalt is dead because of a 50 cent switch that went bad. In fact, it is the switch that you hear clicking in this video when you slightly move the brake. If that switch dies, the saw won't wont, period.
Ahh, so that's why my chainsaw smelt like burning, Here i was thinking i got a rubbish chainsaw, but turns out I'm rubbish at following instructions. Thanks a bunch for this, hopefully i haven't caused serious internal damage, the plastic looked a bit messed up under the cover.......

Well I feel like an idiot, thanks for making this video about the safety. I'm almost ashamed to admit that the safety tricked me but this just kept me from taking it back.
Don’t feel too bad about it
My wife figured it out, not me
You are Awsome , thank you so much , very knowledgeable and great introduction.
Thank you so much
You are very welcome my friend
It’s a great tool
OMG thank you. I thought my brand new chainsaw was DOA!
Great to hear
Dude thank you so much!!!!
You are welcome my friend
I’ll add my name to the thank you list... made the same error and was ready to storm Home Depot for a return.
Thanks!
Happy to help out
You are most welcome
Sucks
Still a good saw
Haha that's funny that the two most common complaints are due to user error.
Looks like a beefy little unit for what its intended use is for.👍🏽
Hope you and your family have an awesome Xmas, mate 🎄
Take care .
Hey Bill
Yeah those are the top complaints and could have been both solved with slightly better text in the manual
Merry Christmas my friend
The chainsaw is not designed to be stored on it's side. It is very annoying to put it on the side all the time!
Just like me, it’s more comfortable sleeping on the side 🙂

Well, i join the club of the brake smokers... was ready to return the great tool...
Hey Julia
It’s a fun club
Just last week I burnt out the motor of a Ryobi drill
God thanks, been a minute so I forgot to pull the damn thing back. Pretty silly in retrospect
We all have too many things going on and it’s making us miss obvious stuff sometimes
Duuuuuude youre a master
Thank you you are very kind
Thank you!!! 😂
Our pleasure!
Thanks dude! I for sure would have smoked the brake
Happy to help
Woooow! So many people here who have no business touching a chainsaw, let alone using one. Scary!
Not all heroes wear capes!
no - maybe steel toe boots?
Thank you for this video. I thought I broke the thing.
You’re not the only one
My dewalt is dead because of a 50 cent switch that went bad. In fact, it is the switch that you hear clicking in this video when you slightly move the brake. If that switch dies, the saw won't wont, period.
Sorry to hear that
Will they fix on warranty?
Thank you VERY MUCH. Problem solved.
You are most welcome
Ahh, so that's why my chainsaw smelt like burning, Here i was thinking i got a rubbish chainsaw, but turns out I'm rubbish at following instructions. Thanks a bunch for this, hopefully i haven't caused serious internal damage, the plastic looked a bit messed up under the cover.......
Maybe the extra heat played with the plastic
However it’s quite rugged so you’ll have to make a judgment call
@@TheWoodenRider Yer I think the plastic might have melted against the motor gearing, see how it goes I suppose Thanks again mate.
Good luck my friend
no wonder it was smoking. thank you
Pleasure Sam
Thanks mate, don't I feel dumb.
Cheers mate
