Hi Oleg. I own the Alpinist, along with the 36mm Explorer. I love my Alpinist because it dresses up or down so well! It's so different from the Explorer as it has more personality. Fantastic bang per buck watch.

I got the Alpinist awhile back and gotta say, I was skeptical of the green dial but when I got it, I realized it actually goes well with most things you wear! Match the band you choose with your shoes and/or belt and you're good to go and the green doesn't feel out of place at all

I thought the indices were applied but they are actually pressed from the rear of the dial. I've seen a photo of the back of the dial and it showed it clearly.

I love love my Alpinist. On the stock strap (as uncomfortable and "plasticy" as it is) the combination of brown, green, gold, and the stainless steel is perfectly balanced. The brown strap helps to take some attention away from the eye catching green dial and complimentary gold markers. And the stainless steel case is like a blank canvas for all the colours to blend in and get to know each other. The green itself is subdued enough to not to be gaudy, but the sunburst pops out enough to be noticed.
And on a strapcode bracelet, it's like wearing a emerald on your wrist. Maximum attention is on that gorgeous gorgeous green dial.
The upcoming replacement that comes in white, black, and of course green, is very similar to this green SARB017 that was also released in white and black as well in the for of the SARB13 and SARB15 respectively.

    • @VersedNJ

@Strangely Brown Oh so true about the blue version, people are paying x2 and more. Not for me, I'll just keep emerald one, maybe play around with different straps. Saw a nice I guess they call it a French style NATO green with a red dotted line down the middle. I did order one for a different watch, but I think it's in 20mm.

When I go on holiday I only take one watch. The Sarb017. I've took it to the Alps, Scandinavia, North Africa and I've scuba dived with it many times. If I'm on vacation with my girlfriend then ill be taking here to dinner in Nice restaurants. The Sarb017 on a bracelet or leather it looks at home here too. On a Nato its great for hiking in the mountains or scuba diving. It's a classic. Mine runs at plus 7 seconds a day. I got mine for 245 Euros. Be the last watch in my collection I'd sell that's for sure.

  • @Lunatic3984
    @Lunatic3984 5 лет назад +4

    My thoughts on SARB017:
The green dial is incredibly beautiful, the golden indices are just wonderful. Sapphire crystal, 20 BAR water resistant, and the case cover I like very much. Yes, actually this case lid, because glass backs have slowly lost their charm for me. For me, the 6R15 is no optical highlight to show. But for me the biggest advantage is that the watch on the steel strap from Strapcode (Oyster or Super Engineer) looks eerily present and powerful. I also found it a little sad that there was no steel bracelet to be seen in the video. The original leather strap on the other hand is obsolete, it looks good, but it wears terribly.
My thoughts on the new Alpinist:
The X on the dial seems completely out of place. I don't have to have the glass back, I just like the upgraded movement. I can't say anything about the dials, but wouldn't the SARB033 have done just as well?
My general thoughts on the 6R caliber:
I see no reason why I should buy an ETA 2824-2 rather than a 6R15. Just because it comes from Switzerland? That's not enough for me. I had roughly the same experience with both calibers, and the movements don't really differ in purchase price either.
Of course, this is only my opinion about causa Alpinist, but I hope that it makes at least a small contribution to the discussion. If you have the chance, then try again with a steel strap from Strapcode to approach the clock, it will be worth it. I would like to send you my green and blue Alpinist, but the shipping costs from Germany might be a bit ambitious.
Otherwise, as always, a great video of you. Should I ever be on your corner, then I would like to shake your hand and bring two three watches with me.

@Strangely Brown Oddly I did order a Strapcode but havn't used it, I like it on leather and maybe a good quality NATO strap. Maybe someday I will put it on. And if I was to go around again, I wouldn't have ordered it. If I want to go for a bracelet and won't at this point. I'd get something by Uncle Seiko.

Hi Oleg, my Sarb 017 is my favorite in a 12-14 watch collection. As to the movement, I compare them to my cars. I have a honda element with 17000 + miles on it. It looks and runs like a 2 year old car. I also have a German saloon that is beautiful. My go to auto is the honda. Not as impressive but I know it will never fail me. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I fell in love with this piece the first time I saw one. The sunburst green with gold hands and markers combined with polished steel is stunning. Definitely stays in my watch rotation and last wore with a blue, yes bright blue nato strap. Stunning. At first you have to get accustomed to the size until you realize that your other watches a too big instead of this being too small. And to be honest if I were to ever actually go rock or mountain climbing (never gonna happen) but if I were then I would wear a g-shock anyway so I don’t worry about scratching anymore than any other watch I wear on a day to day basis. I have “beater” watches for when I working in the yard or on my car etc. love your channel and your 🐶! Keep it up 👍

The dial and handset on the Alpinist are great. I feel like you've never looked at a Rolex case back. I find the Alpinist's to be just fine. Exhibition case backs are way to trendy currently. If it's got some gorgeous high end movement sure, but in most cases it's not really adding value if you ask me.

  • @williamevans9426
    @williamevans9426 5 лет назад

I think the only clothes colours that would not coordinate with a green dial would be black, grey or blue. Browns, red hues, some greens, etc. would be fine. If a new version is about to be launched, I hope Seiko has made the compass crown a little less easy to rotate.

I’ve had the Alpinist for about six months… I had wanted it for awhile but did not want to pay the premium price That people were asking because of it being discontinued… I found it for just over $300 and couldn’t pass it up… I really like the watch… The 6R15 Movement in mine runs out +5/6 seconds… This watch goes on travel with me anywhere I go and for work or play… It can be worn in just about every circumstance and for any purpose… 200 meter water resistance and I think the lume is great For this type of watch… The markers are small but Seiko Lumibright Never disappoints...I have a Rolex explore… And although I like it this watch gets more wrist time!

Good review of a classic watch from Seiko. The Alpinist always gives me a good vibe when I wear it. I paired mine with a Jack Foster English Tan Dublin Leather strap with olive green stitching and the Alpinist absolutely came to life. The rich leather and the green stitching is the perfect combination for this watch. If you don’t know Jack Foster, check them out. The leathers are exquisite. Not cheap but worth every dollar. OK, I just now (28 October 2020) received a SARB017 purchased from Amazon USA for $475.00. I ordered it the day before yesterday and 24 hours ago they were no longer available from Amazon, so I suppose I got one of the last they had. All of them are showing up at more than $900 on Amazon now.
It is a beautiful watch. I also bought the Strapcode brushed and polished bracelet. It's about $20 more than the brushed only bracelet, but it is not available from Amazon. Mine was sent via Fedex from Hong Kong and actually arrived about 2 hours before the watch did (by USPS parcel post) although it was ordered several hours after the watch was. Despite what people say, the leather watchband that came with the SARB017 is fine. No problem at all.
So, what is the difference between a SARB017 and say a 11610LN?
First, the price, of course. They are both beautiful to behold, and no photographs on line do the SARB017 justice. But the 11610LN is also beautiful to behold. Still, they both have a look of quality.
Next, the LN11610LN has a functional rotating bezel, which I never use except as a timer above water. I am a ROV pilot, not a diver. The SARB017 has a rotating bezel which could be used as a compass (I doubt I'll ever use it for that) but it rotates in both directions, so I can use it both as an indicator for ET and countdown. It also serves as a GMT indicator.
Then, there is the fact that the LN11610LN goes down to 300 meters, and the SARB017 goes down to 200 meters. I rarely stick my arm more that a full arm's length underwater.
Finally, the SARB is out of production and if I don't scratch it up I can sell it for more than what I paid. I've already been offered $600 for it. Of course, the 11610LN is still in production, but I can probably get what I paid for it. I don't plan on selling either.
OK, I can feel a difference when I wind and set the time between the two. The Rolex just feels smoother. $7500 more will buy you that feeling of smoothness. But there is NOTHING cheap about this particular Seiko.
If you can find a SARB017 for less than $500, you won't be disappointed.

A web search for “the ultimate seiko alpinist” will reveal a Spring Bar site detailing the history of the Alpinist line of watches. A not insignificant aspect of the enjoyment of the SARB017 is knowing that it is the fourth or fifth generation of a line of Alpinist watches first introduced in 1961. That site also has information regarding, and images of, the 2020 Alpinist release. The SARB017, the Alpinists, reflect my activities--cross-country bicycling, backpacking, hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. The SARB017 is a reminder of that type of accomplishment.
While the SARB017 looks and functions well with various straps, I have a SARB017 with OEM bracelet. The bezel shows respectable signs of regular use over the past five years. I also have a SARB013 (the cream dial-not actually white.) I consider it too rare to be worn on any but special occasions.

I really like this watch, but 500 dollars is not worth it. You can get much better watches for that price. I don't understand the increases in Seiko watches, they are not really all that special anyway until you get to the Grand Seiko. I am finding a liking to Orient which offers a much better value proposition I think anyway. If the new one will be 900 dollars, you can get some really decent watches for 1000.00

Great review as always, thank you for your candid opinion. I think Seiko di a nice job on this watch but I could never see the value for the cost. It is also disappointing what Seiko is doing lately with so many of there models, reducing features and raising prices. If I am truly going to pay more I would like to see the added value. I understand a few percent increase to cover cost increases but they are on a 25 -50% increase on most of what they make. I have many Seiko in my collection but I am beginning to look elsewhere. KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB !
    Thanks

Great idea for a video because it is definitely a very polarizing watch.
I can see others liking the green dial, the polished look, and the gold accent.

I have one and sometimes I like it, sometimes I don’t. The Japanese mountaineering thing for this model is mostly marketing. The original Seiko Laurel and Champion Alpinist watches looked completely different other than the mountain logo on the caseback. The current Alpinist dial design only dates back to the 90’s. I like the ‘compass’ but accept it is completely useless other than being an aesthetic element only. The watch isn’t actually any tougher than the SARB033/035, or any other half decent automatic watch and no one uses it for mountaineering. All Seikos and Orients have Diashock which is just Seiko’s name for their standard shock absorption system - most mechanical watches have something similar i.e Incabloc and it’s nothing particularly special.
The update looks like they will remove some of the white dial text, fortunately. I’d like to see a regulated movement with higher beat rate and reduced rotor noise. I would rather see those changes than a longer power reserve. A see through case back would unfortunately make the watch thicker.

Over the last few years it's hard not to see something about this Alpinist. Usually it all about how great this watch and how it's the best deal in the Seiko line-up. And although I do see some cool features to this watch I just couldn't pull the trigger. Then the Hodinkee model hit the streets and the hoopla began all over again. Sort of like what just happened with the Timex Q. I'll never say never about about the Alpinist but I'm taking a pass. But let me ask you something about Seiko. Why doesn't Seiko have a halfway affordable automatic movement that beats at 28,800 BPM? I don't get it. They probably have 100 prototypes that they've made over the years but we are all left with the low beat models including this 6R movement. We know Seiko wants to be considered at the same level as the Swiss but they seem reluctant to step up their game, other than Grand Seiko. The Swiss gives us 28,800 bpm watches in the $500 range. Where is Seiko?

I have better watches, better Seiko's, but I love my Alpinist really can't give a reason, one maybe it's one of my smaller watches, it's comfortable to wear, did get rid of the stock band and use a nice Barton leather strap. I have had it for about a year and wear it at least 4 days a week, and almost every night when I sleep. The odd think is I can't really nail the reason why I love it. It does make me happy. I know they did come out with a blue version which does look nice but sells for crazy prices, and honestly like the green color better. If I do get a scratch or two over the years, to me I'll look at them as battle scars. This doesn't mean I will abuse this watch. As far as the movement, this is not a new watch it's been around I can't give you the numbers but don't see myself adjusting it outside if I have to reset it do to not using it. I did buy it from an AD whom I trust and done business before and afterwards. I don't remember the exact price but it was just under $500 .
I do like that NATO on the green Alpinist. I don't care what they come out with, I got what I wanted, and don't see a reason for another.
    BTW like your dog.

I totally agree with you. I dont like the Alpinist, too but there is something amazing. I think the watch can be classified in a very unique positioning. With the name Alpinist and the compass it is somehow a field watch. The look shows almost a vintage look dress watch with a very unique color variation. I think green with gold tones works not only because of Rolex. The 200m reminds about Seikos divers but you will find nothing on the look of the watch. At the end it is a mixture of many elements which makes this watch so special. The expedition case back would be nice but than you would probably miss the 200m. With 50m it would miss the above mentioned link to a diver but I agree, they could put more energy into the design of the caseback. My maximum price point for this watch would be around 300-350€. Everything above is too much.

Good point. See-through caseback would probably reduce the water resistance.

Great review. I agree with you. I love my Alpinist, and hate the movement as it’s completely unreliable junk. I’ve paid for it new about 350 bucks about 2 years ago and that’s how much it’s worth. Upgraded version for $800 or more is a joke.
