  • Today we revisit a true Gentry classic - the beloved and highly important Seiko Alpinist. But this is no ordinary Alpinist! This is the latest generation with some surprising new upgrades. As this is such a cult watch amongst the Gentry audience and the wider Seiko loving watch community, it was only right for me to go old school with a traditional in-depth, desktop, hands-on review.
Join me to find out what is so special about this latest incarnation, including its history, improvements, and negatives. Is it worth the new hike in price? Why is it such an important watch to Seiko and to fans of the Alpinist line? Why has it earned the nickname "Japanese Rolex Explorer"? Is it still the best automatic field watch under $500? Find out answers to all that and more as we take a look at the legendary SBDC093.

I own the Cream with gold, the Black with silver as well as the classicSARB017. The black is the most versatile for any light conditions. The green dial is at its best in sunlight while the cream boosts under indoor lighting.
And the steel bracelet on the Black dial is the most comfortable Seiko bracelet I've ever worn. Pure silk.
The lume is crisp and bright.
I was a doubter before I got my first Alpinist but now all three are my collection essentials.

Wearing the non Guilt cream version right now. Ordered a JDM version, very happy with it. Not cheap $688, but could do far worse. As said previous, I would like to get the new alpinst strap with clasp to use on my older green Alpinist. Even checked on Seiko's web site, not to much in the way of support outside of warranty and where to buy one. Saw a similar non Seiko strap on Ebay for $30, and that can be touch and go.

I have the cream (ivory?) dial with silver indices, it’s a fantastic watch. Had the Sarb017 but sold it as the green/gold wasn’t for me long term. My new model has all the same characteristics - yes it’s a hair thicker but you can hardly tell, however it has a superior movement and much more versatile colour scheme so win/win for me. It seems that many brands start to cut corners on their new releases.. Look at the car manufacturers who build cheaper and cheaper made cars but the prices go up and up... Or the gaming industry.. Games are released at 70% completion state and then get patched to death.. But they still charge you x amount for an early access.. But as long as people buy it.. They wont stop to do it... It proofs that it works.. My boss once said.. It doesnt matter how dumb your product is.. There are always people buying it.. Which is a sad sad truth.. :(..

Alpinist: applied indexes, better brand, better lume, AR coating, better water resistance, unique compass, argubly better movement. (Cheaper to maintain, easier to regulate, better longevity) The Alpinist is overall more interesting, completely unique design.

As a SARB017 owner I think the most appealing new variation of this watch is the black dial/Steel bracelet SPB117. With it's slightly different dial layout the coolest thing about this one is that it still looks like an Alpinist but with a very interesting Diver aspect and feel which, in my opinion renews the essence of the lineup.

Love your thoughtful, almost lyrical, descriptions of the design elements! I can attest that this is a beautiful watch with a robust new movement, as I have both the ivory/steel and green/gilt models. I didn't even notice the slight misalignment of the compass points until watching a couple of RUclips videos! The compass still works, in the unlikely event I would actually need it. I'd prefer to rely on a magnetic compass. I've been wearing both models for a couple of weeks now and don't regret the purchases.

    Hi TGV
Yes, of course it’s the Japanese Explorer. But not as some kind of a homage watch, a piece with its true own identity. Everything is always measured against Rolex.....but really, Seiko was first here, weren’t they😆
Always liked the Alpinists - but until now not enough to actually buy one. The strange mix of elegance and utilitarian design is compelling, in a way nostalgic and surely classy. I was very tempted when the now classic green version was hot. Think it still is...
I haven’t been handling this one, but judging from this video and the measurements I would guess it’s a bit too big for me. Not as a field watch, but I would probably use it as some kind of an elegant casual piece...😊
Thank you, and keep up the good work👍

Hey, TGV! Been awhile since I've stopped by. My wrist check today (nearly every day!) is my Seiko SARB017, which I learned about from you, sir, and is to date my favorite watch in my modest collection. Hope you've been well, and thanks for your superb content. I have a lot of catching up to do. Cheers!

Those are gorgeous. I saw a goldtone Seiko 5 with the sunny yellow dial (it was going to get a navy blue Marathon strap. Let's Go, Predators!!! Lol), but you're absolutely correct about the Alpinist's versatility. Suitable for work and play, and date nights to destinations other than hockey games. Oh hell, I may hafta have one of each. Great show!

I've never quite warmed to the design language of the Alpinist. I want to but I just can't. I used to think it was the old green colorway but the new ones prove that it's the style. Those hands and font look baroque. Now mismatched in the Prospex line, that ghastly lens (always brings Mike from Monsters Inc. into view) and thick, that's it, last nail for me. (And don't get me started on the QC level at Seiko, which anecdotally is more than skin deep.) Thanks for the review TGV.

I noticed that the new version no longer has the "applied" loom dots. It's something I've not seen any reviewer mention about the Alpinist, but struck me straight away on closely examining my green Alpinist. Those tiny dots of lume have a miniscule gold collar around their base. For me, its those small finishing details that make the previous Alpinist special, and sadly, through it abscence, another example of cost cutting.

I have both the SARB017 and this SPB123, the first is definitely better finished, I'm using the first, darker, during sunny days, and the second in the evening almost every days, because it's highly readable.
Both are definitely keepers, no matter the obvious small defaults of the latest.

Great video as always, I’d love a Sarb017 but they’re getting more and more scarce in the UK and prices are rising so I may well go for one of these new ones, at least the movement’s will be newer and hopefully not need servicing as soon! Don’t mind the cyclops either since it harks back to previous models in any case
