Oh god, another Seiko complaint video. Let's just face it when these came out most of us weren't nearly as knowledgeable about watches, so these were cool and hold a place in many collectors hearts. Pricing going up is a dumb arguement, everything in the world has gone up in price and there is always supply and demand, the sarb017 was far more popular than anticipated, as a business owner you would've raised the price as well. Seikos quality control has never been stellar. These are just biased opinions that really don't really hold any weight. My rent has gone up 100% in the past 5 years as well.....
Agreed with u bro...skx need to be discontiuned as Seiko need to push their mid range actual divers watches..5kx sports is not the skx diver replacements.. they are a sports theme watches with upgraded movements using the 5kx base only. Errmmm..
I would not mind the price increase if they wouldn't refuse to do some long needed upgrades (glass, bracelet clasp, signed crown) and QA. Hardlex on 400$ watch? Come on! Chinese watches have shown that sapphire upgrade costs like literally 20$. How can Citizen release ISO rated diver that is cheaper than Seiko 5?
Citizen is doing what Seiko used to do. You can still get a true ISO diver for under 200bucks with the NY0040. You can still get a NB1050 for 450ish, which is a better SARB033. They are killing with the Tsuyosa line of integrated bracelet sports watches. They are coming out with a true GMT as well.
I bought the prospex version from Japan for $600 with the green dial and let me tell you i love this little watch I wear it with everything. Definitely worth the $600 I paid for.
Back in 2017 I OBSESSED over which automatic watch was going to be my first to purchase, knowing full-well I was going to be diving down a very deep rabbit hole of a hobby. Went with the SARB017, and 20 timepieces later I'm still very proud of my first decision. Love this thing!
Dispolsable watches, a 110 dollars watch is costing me 140 dollars to service, now think about it if you decide to do that service every 3-4 years as Seiko recommends but even if it stops working after many years it will still cost me that money if not more to service it. Would not wear a mechanical as a daily for this reason, I've started to appreciate quartz watches for daily and wear mechanical only time to time otherwise it's a money hole, costs more than a car for maintenance.
@@nerychristian As a watch collector myself i would say that if its not broken dont fix it they run just fine but the backplate have to be super tightened so anything shit and dust to go inside movement
I recently bought a Citizen Automatic Divers 200 Titanium for $568 after tax, direct from Citizen. I absolutely love the watch. I'd argue that Citizen is still providing the bang for buck that Seiko used to provide.
I'd really like to see Citizen, Bulova, and Casio turn their attention to automatic and manual wind watches. I just can't get into quartz, no matter how nicely it's packaged. although the mechaquartz and higher frequency stuff has possibilities.
Citizen is a full tier above Seiko on all measures. Citizen excels technically on: eco-drive, hand and marker alignment, accuracy, adjustable bracelet.
I'm with you 100%. This week to work I wore my SARG009 three days, my 6309 diver from 1980, and a 1968 King Seiko. The SARG/SARB era was the end. They don't make much new cool stuff.
Luckily I kept a SARB065 in my collection that I never wore until recently. I will never part with that watch. I also had a brand new SARB035 that was brand new in box. But sadly I sold it because I needed the money.
I used to ask jewelry stores if they carried the Grand Seiko. They would either say they have no idea what that is, or some smug response like, "Maybe go check Walmart". People are now realizing that the movement and detail in those watches are top game. I just hope that doesnt change prices. I have a couple Presage but they arent that great.
I have three Seikos and I love them, but every time I see a new one that interests me I'd need to spend £600+ to even get a sapphire crystal as a starting point, so I'm on the Orients and I just view their range with passing interest these days.
Seiko has slotted Orient in where Seiko budget watches used to be and are now trying to compete in niches with a higher price point. Grand Seiko will remain competitive in the luxury sector, but in between the two price ranges, it will be interesting to see what happens with Seiko.
I wouldn't mind that. But unfortunately, Seiko continues to make some shitty low tier watches. I wish they would focus on what they are good at... Making nice dive watches.
I bought the new alpinist in sunbeam forest colour with the cyclops. I would have preferred the non cyclops model but I do like it. Looks lovely in the light. Build quality has been great. It was that or the Hamilton Murph but when there was a sale at half price I just had to get it. Got it for £340. After the sale the watch disappeared and has now reappeared at £660. Still got my eye on the murph though. But it's never on sale!
Seiko used to have an identity...low cost - good quality. After getting in bed w/orient, they they are producing higher priced and less value. Orient is what Seiko used to be. At Seiko's price point, there are tons of oems producing very nice watches that are simply better in value and quality.
That's a beautiful watch! I love the green dial with the NATO strap. As I type this, I'm wearing a plane jane Seiko 5 from 1967. I love vintage Seikos and have many of them, including quite a few quartz models. The early quartz movements are a thing of beauty, and I get to see them every time I change the battery. Collecting Seiko vintage is relatively inexpensive, compared to other brands. The 5 that I'm wearing and love so much, was $20 at a thrift store (covered with grime!). It won't impress people like a Rolex, but it impresses me.
I consider myself lucky that I own a sarb017 and skx011 and wish I’d have picked up a sarb033 as well when they were readily available and affordable as nothing Seiko produce currently equals the bang for buck of those watches or the iconic designs.
Absolutely spot on I wish they would come out with some more affordable awesome pieces, I too have a sarb017 as well as a sarb033, sarb035, and a skx013 and they are the most worn out of my collection because the specs on them are amazing and classic
I haven't had a hands-on experience with any Seiko Prospex watch, but the Seiko 5 series improved over time IMO. Enhanced movements, less cheap bracelets, good finishing for the price, etc. Take the 5kx for example, most people would not need a 200m watch, and the screw-down crown would be more of a hassle for most people. It keeps the charm of the case shape and size while modifying it for an average person's needs. Want a dive watch? a G-shock should do. Inflation has taken its toll on many things, and Seiko is no exception. Seiko isn't quite falling off, just modifying its catalog for a different demographic. Edit: I just bought a new alpinist, totally love its looks.
One point of contention on the screw down crow/lack there of, the push pull crown on the 5kx is really hard to pull out sometimes with the grip pattern being the way that it is, and I think a screw down crown would help it a bit, but that's a little bit of a nitpick.
@@lawncrowI actually prefer a push pull crown though. Screw threads wear down over time and I've had a couple older watches which I needed to get them replaced. I don't even NEED the screw down crown. I don't swim w my watches on.
jory talking about the downgrade, downgrade with higher price. Not talking about people would not need a 200m watch. the context, open your eyes, seiko is not fun anymore
Orient is a division of the same company as Seiko and yet they haven't bumped their prices, they are still a lot of bang for buck. So I doubt it was 'necessary' for Seiko to up their prices this much, imo it's just a case of making MORE profit. It's become a no-go watch brand for me.
@@RenghisKhan i believe it's a move to "raise" Seiko to a higher perceived brand status. Its not logical but the general public considers more expensive products to be better, regardless of actual quality. Seems like Seiko E. is keeping Orient as the affordable enthusiast brand, and Seiko with it's more widely known brand name to a high priced brand and attract the general public. They don't want Seiko to be seen as "cheap" anymore.
Has been my go to beater watch for the last 4 yrs. The original strap still looks great. I hope it lasts as long as my last beater watch that I purchased in 1977..... a Seiko Pogue.
Hope you are having a good afternoon…1977. That’s a while ago.Time flies…Thats a fact!I don’t know very much about watches in general.Especially automatic watches but I ordered one because all these watch collectors on RUclips said it was such a great bargain for all the features you get for the price (Boderry voyager field watch, with a pretty popular/good quality??Seiko movement inside of it.?.?$96 USD on Amazon after taxes)I reside in NC Sandhills, USA & do a lot of outdoor activities in & around salt & fresh water.happened to see your comment and figured that since this is a recent video + you have owned automatic watches since at least the 70’s,you might be the right person to ask ,”do you think I bought a good watch that will last a long time without any problems?” The only watch guy on here that seems to really know about watches that attempted to take the back of the watch off to look at the movement/action ,has the right tools and knows what he is doing but couldn’t get it open to take a look inside, was the little Baldheaded guy with a British accent (can’t think of his channels name right now but I think you probably know who I’m talking about.?.)So I surely won’t be opening it or know what is inside of the watch..Any opinions or information that you can give me about what I can expect as far as longevity without having to try and find someone to service it(IDk if that’s possible & if so most likely more expensive than buying another watch.?.?),or anything else that comes to mind about the watch I bought would be great ..I haven’t worn a watch in years (last one was a digital timex iron man that I needed for work. I was a dental lab tech at that time and needed a watch with multiple alarms ,timers & was also waterproof.I was mixing small batches of all sorts of materials for very specific amounts of time, washing mixing bowls + had multiple other things going at once all over the lab,in ovens at very specific temps/amount of time ect. There were timers on some of the equipment + I had additional timers here & there, for backups but it gets loud In dental labs at times & I was all over the place in that building. If I didn’t have my own alarms with me at all times, I could easily forget about something & have to start all over. Even with the alarms I’d occasionally miss something & ruin it…You get the point. That was a long time ago.Back in the early- mid flip phone days .not as easy to set alarms and didn’t matter what kind of phone it was…no good if it’s in my pocket or sitting somewhere else. The inexpensive timex did the job well for around 2-3 years ,battery would start to die, throw it out & get another.lately I have been leaving my cell phone behind every chance I get .It feels liberating .Tired of always relying on a cell phone!!BUT… I still need to know what time it is. Went to the coast with friends a couple weeks ago, noticed an old good friend of mine had gotten a new watch(he’s sick of the constant phone thing too)The one he went with was a citizen eco drive dive watch. His wrists are bigger than mine,it looks nice on him. That brand has a good reputation as far as I know .He said it was good so far & I respect his opinions . Hes always had good taste & gets nice things with out paying too much & he’s mechanically minded type ..A smart fella all the way around. So, I started looking at A few different Citizen eco drive models before I came across the one I ordered. The idea of automatic & having nothing that’s battery operated on me at all seems like a good thing. And I have followed my friends lead with all sorts of things in the past. He’s yet to send me in the wrong direction when I ask him for his advice. Want simplicity, decent quality & plan on wearing it 24/7/365 on the underside of my 7.25” wrist .That’s what I did with the timex.Rarely took it off. The watch will be delivered early-mid September..I won’t know if I will even like it until I get it in hand & try it out .If it turned out to be uncomfortable, loud or anything else I couldn’t deal with or get used to,I can return it. I apologize for the long drawn out question. I have taken enough of your time. I don’t buy many things for myself but when I do I like to be an informed consumer & get something that’s worth the money that I enjoy. Keep the Boderry if I like it when it is delivered,or spend some extra money on aCitizen or something else all together.?.thank you in advance & I hope you see this.took a while to type…On this PHONE..!.must put it down now!!hope you have a good evening. The SPB121J1 for 690£ is still great value for money. 70 Hours power reserve, 200m water resistance, automatic and overall great durability with a stunning face (and I personally prefer the see through back)- it’s a steal! Find me a watch with similar specs for the same price in today’s day. Tissot’s watches which are more expensive produce similar specs but less overall durability.
The Time Teller, we cannot always expect things to stay cheap. If you had $350 in your pocket in 2008 and that same money stayed $350 in 2018, that's called depreciation. I respect your channel and love watching you a lot, though this is probably the only time I cannot agree with you.
Lucky enough to own a Sarb017 & 035. Fantastic watches, both punching way above their weight. Wish I had the wit to have picked up the 033 when it was around at the same price point.
I still have yet to own a new Seiko post 2019. I have the SARB017, SARX033, and Turtle SRPC91 Save the Ocean 2018. However the modern ones I do like and would consider; SPB143, the newer Black Alpinists, and Red dial Sharp Edge series.
Seiko should stop producing any models they currently sale for less than $400. Most of those watches are trash anyways. They should just focus on their higher end dive watches, and a few nice dress watches. They should leave the low budget watch market to Orient, Casio, and Timex.
Love my 017, 033, and 035. The (SPB143)SBDC101 for $800 is a current winner in that category for me being a seikoholic. I’m stoked on my 55th anniversary remake. But it is a shame they couldn’t have just kept making the sarb and skx lines and just increased those prices. They could have done so much with both references.
I got mine around 2014. I don’t know how many times I have had comments on what a great looking watch it is and I have literally had people stop me and ask if it is a SARB017. It is a legend. PERIOD
One of my favorite pieces ever…cnt ever get rid of this one…it kind of ruined vintage rolex and tudors for me as well…steals wrist time from my air king and jumbo tudor date
This was the first mechanical watch I bought along with a Seiko 5 at the same time period, still one of my favourites in my collection. Green happens to be one of my favourite colours so it tends to go well with a lot of my outfits, blending with browns and contrasting well with reds, and the shape of the case makes it slip under the cuff quite well for its size. My favourite thing about it is the versatility of it, I've worn it on holidays before up in Scotland or when boating in Norfolk and it has both the active specs to be able to be worn while sailing or mountain climbing on a NATO, while looking stylish enough that it looks great worn on leather while sitting in front of a fire holding a glass of Scotch. It fits into a niche, but it's absolutely my niche.
I do wish the newer Alpinists continued the Alpinist logo, either on the dial replacing the Prospex logo or on the caseback like the SARB017 has, I understand they maybe want to simplify their brand range offerings but Alpinist is one of their iconic brands and it shouldn't die. I do still think you can get some decent bang for buck with Seiko though, I haven't bought many newer Seikos other than a Sakura Fubuki cocktail time Presage (but I did buy a new stock OG SARB065 as well), a SARW019 Chocodial (current favourite), and an ice frost Mini Turtle (my watersports watch), but I see a lot of priee increases with certain newer Seiko models without a justifiable improvement, Seiko used to be the king of value to quality ratio, but some of their newer models seem like they're resting on their laurels rather than fighting for that key position of bang for buck.
Looking at the price that the sarb017 is fetching now it’s definitely a keeper and mine is still my favourite for some reason and I absolutely love it for reasons I can’t explain, she’s just got so much charm. I have the newer version and it’s no where near as appealing in my eyes.
Totally agree, I’ve loved seiko for over 30 years but ever since the changes a few years I no longer recommend seiko as a bang for your buck value watch .
After a few Seiko 5 watches this was for me the first relatively expensive mechanical watch I bought, the green dial did it for me. Currently languising in a box somewhere after a house move. After this great video, it will be on my wrist tomorrow.
I think most people forget that under $500 you can get a very nice turtle or a Samurai and or even a monster that has everything that the skx had and looks better and are made better and don't forget the skx had a really crappy movement in it. So I don't get the complaints
Recently bought the King Turtle Grenade. I think it's my second best buy behind the SARB017. Paid about $600AUD for it and it's a weapon. I think Jory is forgetting the Turtle, Monster, Sumo, Tuna, Samurai. They all make the SKX look very tired and all still well under $1k.
Shout out too Citizen! My first and only dive watch is a Promaster Eco Drive Diver. It's iso rated and very durable. Bought it for sale for 190 dollars.
I started collecting with a Sarb017 & Sarb065. Love them both, but I feel like there is nowhere else to go with seiko other than a skx or flighty. I keep eyeballing some of their newer offerings, but nothing really holds my attention. 🤷🏼♂️
Well... 22 h additional power reserve with the new models is quite an upgrade...right? Price? New models are about 500-600 € here(regular recommended price about 750€-1000€, depended of the model) in Europe, sure finding the proper discount which is quite easy. The price of Alpinist in 2007 was 350 €. Now calculation with the inflation rate which is same in the USA and EU... 17 years.. the k=2.48, which means that the price from 2007 would be equal as total 869 € today. So... what the cause of panic? Lower price today and significant more 33% power reserve, and picking the matching colour of new models by desire. Seiko is still the winner... on the other hand vox populi is buying mehanical, neither other watches but smart ones.
Forty years ago, all my watches were Seikos. When I really got into watches in 2019, I bought a few Seikos, but have given them away or will sell them. I prefer my Bulova, Casio, Citizen, Glycine, Islander, Orient and Timex watches. Recently, I have purchased four Zelos watches, which has altered my expectations in the $430 - $850 range. I would like a Seiko Spring Drive, but like the Accutron Electrostatic drive models, the prices just seem too high for me.
I have a SARB017, the first gift from my GF (now wife) to me 8 years ago. It's been serviced and still worn regularly with others in rotation. It's in my permanent watch collection for sentimental reasons but also for its perfect size, unique look, and 200M WR. One of my favorite watches ever regardless of price and will never leave my collection even though I've acquired Tudors and new Omegas (among others) along the years.
2015-16 I started to collecting Seiko's, you could find excellent watches for $100-300. I have kept the my favorites and wear them regularly. Some issue I've had are the Hardlex Crystal sucks (easy to scratch) compared to Sapphire and you usually have to upgrade the strap to evenly complement the case/dial.
Whinge whinge whinge, complaining on how an item is not the same the price it was 17 years ago. It is like complaining your partner doesn’t look the same as he/she did 17 years ago. You can still get incredible watches from Seiko under a grand. You can still walk into a shop and buy almost any model. You can still walk into a shop and get a discount. Seiko will still likely to be around in 100 years, how many micro-brands will?
Totally agree, and really who wants to wait to be told by some micro band companies, that the watch I want is not available, but we willlet you know when it is, in the meantime you can go on a waiting list.
I absolutely agree, Seiko has moved up in price. Perhaps trying to move towards the "luxury" world. They've always had very expensive and beautiful watches, but also very good quality entry level. No more... oh well I have an Alpinist, two SKX, a Monster and a Cocktail... guess I'll look other brands ! Speaking of this ... I just got a Venezianico, italian micro brand, with NH34 GMT movement....very very very nice watch at an interesting price !
So true. Looking back at the value that was available it seems like another world. I picked up an SNK809 for 50 quid back then and I just saw one on Amazon for 300!!
I'm glad I've preferred Orient over Seiko. I still like the Seiko watches that I have. Too bad downgrading means more money to companies. Look at Toyota as an example. This was a needed and informative video!
What's even worse, is that they will not answer or give interviews. I would settle for sapphire crystals on their 5 models, and 4HZ movements under $1k to match the Miyota 9 series. Oh, and regulate them for a change.
Man I owned Sarb 017 in 2015. Loved it so dam much that ended up owning 033 & 035 as well. Regrettably sold all to fund my first Rolex thinking I wouldn't miss it after the collection gets swiss heavy; how wrong was I. In 2022 I purchased the SBDC091 and believe me I tried to like it .. for over an year, until I finally admitted to myself that this is just NOT a 017, and sold it. I hated the dial colour, absolutely hated the hideous prospex logo. Seiko is so out of touch with reality it is sad. Case in point - SARB017, SKX007/009
I don’t understand why everyone raves about Seiko. I took the plunge and bought my first a couple years ago online. It’s a beautiful solar Chrono. Sadly, I didn’t notice that every time I went to put it on it was dead and needed to be charged up. And yes, after about a year and I tried for the fifth time to charge it up and … bam…nothing. It’s just a dead watch. Nothing. Put it in the windowsill…noting…under a halogen lamp at full blast all night long…nothing. I got burned. This watch is junk. And I waited too long two I can’t fix it under warranty so when I take it to a jeweler, they say it’s going to cost $200 to service. Sigh. Why does anyone like these watches??? Burn me once, shame on Seiko. I’m never giving them a second chance. I don’t have Silicon Valley money to just throw away.
A few years ago Seiko began swiftly moving up-market and have become unafordable. A MarineMaster I bought about 10 years ago was about $1200USD, last time I checked were over $4500!!! Rudiculous.
mamacoo You are so well-informed about luxury watches. You've obviously done your due diligence and the comparison to the US is very informative...because of course, I live in New York. thank you very much
Never understood the dislike for the 017 green dial. I think it looks stunning. was fortunate to get 035 and a 033 and a 017 when they were all about 250 quid. Great watches
I purchased the new Green Alpinist. I imported it myself from Japan. By the time it was ordered with the sales tax, I got it for $640.00. I have had the watch since April 2023. The quality is fantastic. I own several vintage Omega watches. My three bang-around watches are: a 1980's Seiko quartz, the green Alpinist, and the Invicta two-toned blue quartz pro diver quartz. This Christmas I will buy a Pepsi 1953 Invicta. Future expensive watch is the steel with black faces gold numbers Chronograph Longine.
I started using an apple watch primarily for the health tracking & notifications which put a big dent in my use of traditional watches, almost rendering them obsolete. I have to make an effort to put the apple watch away and put on one of the others, mainly when I go out (not that anyone notices or gives a rip what I'm wearing.)
Hey, I can’t argue with the fact that seiko increased their prices in the past couple of years. Personally I feel that it is just the factor of the market and self branding that kicks in and changes things. They must differ themselves from many new/low end brands that entered the market, while keeping the brand value and the people’s perception of seiko as of not part of this low end brands. Of course that as a customer, I’d like them to sell me the best value for a sub 100$, but in this day and age, I feel like everything had shifted up in price that I can’t really blame them. For me, and I’m sure for many others, seiko is their first “real watch”, and the one that got them into this hobby, and I’m sure it will still be this way. But of course the cyclop was not needed 😂 Keep on the great work.
Hi Jory. Have u ever tried the Seiko turtle taiwan edition SRPH39K1. I know is limited buy owing it from a year it keep me thinking is one of a few still gave top quality for bucks..if u find retail price 😅..pics don't give fair looks
I'm waiting for my Orient Star Sports Outdoor. Maybe something you should check out? There are several colour optioons, I'm sure you'll find something that matches your handbag.
Used to have one. Felt it too small on my wrist and didn´t like the useless solar compass. Sold it and bought a Seiko Tic Tac 35th. Looks better in each and every way.
I bought the 6r35 new version . only had it since Christmas it's spent 4 months been sent away for fixing. running 7 minutes a week slow. it also keeps stopping each day on a full wind, apparently the movement is garbage, wish I never bought it . The dealer should of replaced my watch not sent UT away for nearly 5 months
spot on with the most interesting seiko's being all limited bought the SRPJ43, SRPJ79, SRPJ91, and SRPK17. no complaints here but would love to see them put the same kind of effort in their regular lineup.
I have mine on an ostrich leather strap. Daily wore it for years. It was my first mechanical watch. Been wearing a SRPK777JI recently. It isn't very accurate and the bezel alignment is atrocious. I detest poor quality. The worst part is I paid MORE for it than I dd for the SARB017.
Agree and you forgot to mention the endless list of LE they released afterwards Each one with a more sticking dial and a higher price tag And been snatched in seconds and flipped on eBay for x more So now the Sarb017 used and beaten up sells for more than an SPB121 Seiko has killed my appetite for an Alpinist and left me feeling so annoyed that I didn’t buy one prior to it getting discontinued This said I’ll probably buy an Alpinist eventually if I find a gem at a decent price Excellent video
I can’t believe the prices on the SARB017! Doubled in price since I bought it new. I love the watch and I love the green dial. It’s a great piece and extremely versatile I would never part with it. I hate the cyclops feature they’ve added to the new ones.
But that new 1/100 Speedtimer-truly unique design, insane tech, under a grand MSRP, less at retail...it's the most Seiko thing Seiko has done in decades.
You could just title this video "inflation happens". Its crazy to think that their watches would not go up in price.
Oh god, another Seiko complaint video. Let's just face it when these came out most of us weren't nearly as knowledgeable about watches, so these were cool and hold a place in many collectors hearts. 100% rent increase is wild! Wait...my rent went from $800 in 2015 (that was upscale in my city in CA) to $1500 now. This fvckn blows! 😢
I would not mind the price increase if they wouldn't refuse to do some long needed upgrades (glass, bracelet clasp, signed crown) and QA. Hardlex on 400$ watch? Come on! Chinese watches have shown that sapphire upgrade costs like literally 20$. How can Citizen release ISO rated diver that is cheaper than Seiko 5?
this guy is just farming clicks like usual. don't take anything he says seriously
I got this SARB017 and SARB033 in 2020 from a small shop in Tokyo. They had 2 last pieces.
The best buy I have made! Love them both, so versatile.
That’s crazy. The SARB 17 was going up in value way before that. And theurbangentry predicted the price rise or help create it
Good find. I also pick up three of the SARB017 as availability was winding down, $375 each.
Yup.
I have a citizen GMT Ecodrive. It is excellent.

A blue dialled NY-0040 Promaster diver is the watch I hope to get for my 20th birthday
You forgot to mention the not aligning bezel which is ridiculous for a watch of the price it is.
You nailed it. Like everyone else commenting, I’m just glad I bought my favorite seiko pieces years ago. I’m still rocking my SARG009 5 days a week
Same here!
I'm with you 100%. This week to work I wore my SARG009 three days, my 6309 diver from 1980, and a 1968 King Seiko. The SARG/SARB era was the end. They don't make much new cool stuff.
He didn't nail sht. I nailed his momma
Love my SPB121J1. Bought new in 2022
Glad i got the spb089.
Seiko downfall stared when they discountinued SARB017, SARB033 and SKX007 ans
Seiko fucked up right as I started to get into watches. I've always had shitty luck which leads me to believe that I fucked up Seiko. Sorry, all.
What do you think about Astrons? I I own a SSE093 and still happy with it.
Thanks!
I bought a SARB033 in like 2016 or something and will never let it leave me
Absolutely spot on I wish they would come out with some more affordable awesome pieces, I too have a sarb017 as well as a sarb033, sarb035, and a skx013 and they are the most worn out of my collection because the specs on them are amazing and classic

Seiko has to do this because they werent going to compete with smart watches at the same price bracket. Period.
Seiko’s main problem is the sheer scale of its offering and it’s attempts to be all things to all people, addressing the requirements of all budgets.
Reminds me of Toyota. Not in a bad way, however.
They will probably release a limited reissue of the SKX, but charge you around $1500 for it.
The price increase is a true bummer. I really like the baby alpinist though. Still has a threaded crown 200m WR and I really don't mind the PX logo.
I haven't really been keeping up lately, why are nato straps no longer allowed to be called nato straps? Did someone copyright it or something?
I dunno, think he was joking. Maybe youtube has something against war etc, might affect algorithm
I’m in love with the green and gold mix here…
Looking at the price that the sarb017 is fetching now it’s definitely a keeper and mine is still my favourite for some reason and I absolutely love it for reasons I can’t explain, she’s just got so much charm. I have the newer version and it’s no where near as appealing in my eyes.
Totally agree, I’ve loved seiko for over 30 years but ever since the changes a few years I no longer recommend seiko as a bang for your buck value watch .
Man great video! About time someone gave a good rant about this!
Exactly right!
@@bradmcpherson7591 there you go dude. Exactly my point. Enjoy your new watch brother. I love that dial
Shout out too Citizen! My first and only dive watch is a Promaster Eco Drive Diver. It's iso rated and very durable. Bought it for sale for 190 dollars.
Seiko ruined? Oh. Last time I checked they seemed to be doing fine. Have they suffered a collapse that I'm not aware of?
My wallet did
He's right, though. And that's why they're doing fine. Profits over quality control and innovation
Yeah, how could you be a watch enthusiast and not agree that as a brand, Seiko is pretty fucked these days?
I love mine on the optional steel bracelet.
Once you get a Zelos , you feel like every seiko below 3 grand is a robbery.
Love my SARB017 Alpinist... I need to geed to get blue and white ones.
You’re spot on with this. There are too many good vintage and used seikos out there. I don’t think I’ll ever buy a new seiko again.
You should start looking at the Seiko Bellmatics, those are really cool mechanicals with an alarm. I got one and intend to get more.
I got all the right Seiko watches before they dumped and came out with expensive replacements. Unfortunately I missed the Sarb033.
You’re 100% right about the pivotal moment. I’m still in love with Seiko. But I’m being tempted to ask for a divorce… In therapy as we speak.
Orient needs their answer to the alpinist
I still love my Sarb017, but my daily has been the Big Crown Pointer Date for a year now.
How do you scratch the case back like that...?
By wearing it regularly
Having wrists made from silicon carbide... LOL
I LOVE Seiko…. From when I started getting into watches. It’s the same as how I feel about 4cyl tuners from the early 2000’s
100% agreed!
Another great video!🎉
Good vid man. Zelos floats my boat! And after I put an Erster bracelet on my Sarb 017……..wow!
So true. Looking back at the value that was available it seems like another world. I picked up an SNK809 for 50 quid back then and I just saw one on Amazon for 300!!
I sold mine years ago and just repurchased one last week. I paid the price and ill never sell it again
I'm glad I've preferred Orient over Seiko. I still like the Seiko watches that I have. Too bad downgrading means more money to companies. Look at Toyota as an example. This was a needed and informative video!
Toyota Corolla Verso mid to late 2000’s version the best family hack you can buy
Thanks for your thoughts. Ive settled on Marc’s islander pilot series of watches. Well built for a great price . Wear it every day
What's even worse, is that they will not answer or give interviews.
I have a sarb017 and am glad I bought one below $500 but I wish I had your blue hodinkee sarb0.
My three bang-around watches are:
a 1980's Seiko quartz, the green Alpinist, and the Invicta two-toned blue quartz pro diver quartz. This Christmas I will buy a Pepsi 1953
Invicta.
Here I am contemplating selling my Sarb017 and you go and make this video. Thanks a lot! 😂
I may have to hang on to it.
I have been contemplating selling mine as well. I need to trim my collection down to what I REALLY WANT.
Oddly, today's my Sarb017's rotation. Coincidence?
But of course the cyclop was not needed 😂
Keep on the great work.
Hi Jory. Have u ever tried the Seiko turtle taiwan edition SRPH39K1. I know is limited buy owing it from a year it keep me thinking is one of a few still gave top quality for bucks..if u find retail price 😅..pics don't give fair looks
Agreed. Also, what is your top two currently
Alpinist is a really nice watch. But I feel it is about 25% over-priced. It's what has held me back from buying one. The green dial does work.
Ahh, that’s too harsh, man. Not wrong, but it’s not that extreme,IMO.
The OG Alpinist is one of my best and most favorite pieces, for sure.
I'm waiting for my Orient Star Sports Outdoor. Maybe something you should check out? There are several colour optioons, I'm sure you'll find something that matches your handbag.
I hate the change to the seiko 5 branding.
Used to have one. Felt it too small on my wrist and didn´t like the useless solar compass. Sold it and bought a Seiko Tic Tac 35th. Looks better in each and every way.
Bought the Alpinist and the sarb 033 the year before they got discontinued and prices went crazy. Love both of them and they are absolute classics.
I skipped the display caseback alpinist and went with g-shock gwg-1000 mudmaster
What is your top two brands then?
spot on with the most interesting seiko's being all limited bought the SRPJ43, SRPJ79, SRPJ91, and SRPK17. no complaints here but would love to see them put the same kind of effort in their regular lineup.
I took my SARB to Europe to see Rammstein , Poland , Amsterdam an the UK. Great watch and. one of my top 3.
Definite agree. Thank you for making one of your classic RUclips presentations.
The gold tone hands and hour markers against a stainless steel bezel drove me crazy. I sold mine. You live and learn.
I can’t believe the prices on the SARB017! Doubled in price since I bought it new. I love the watch and I love the green dial. It’s a great piece and extremely versatile I would never part with it. I hate the cyclops feature they’ve added to the new ones.
It had to be said, and you, Sir said it.
Can the old one be had used for under $500? It’s probably my favorite watch other than Raymond Weill.
Just picked up a SRPE37 with the white dial and I love it.
But that new 1/100 Speedtimer-truly unique design, insane tech, under a grand MSRP, less at retail...it's the most Seiko thing Seiko has done in decades.
I agree. Good contact. Thank you.
