Once again, the best watch reviews available, bar none. The different looks with the strap changes and the hyper production value are unmatched. Keep them coming, please!!!
Best review I've seen of this watch. I"ve owned this watch for about a year and it really has grown on me. Very nice watch. Would have preferred Alpinist closed case-back, and retro style Alpinist script on the face though. Would recommend this watch nonetheless.
Great review. I have one myself, and I agree with all of the points you make. It's a bit steep on price, but I think it's well worth it once you have it in-hand. It's a beautiful piece that looks great with any strap. You can dress it up or down as needed. It's my everyday watch now. PLEASE PLEASE do a review of the bracelets and straps you recommend. I'm eager to get a bracelet for the thing, but need to hear more about how well things fit first. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! I'll definitely do the bracelet one, maybe in a few weeks. In the meantime I'll tell you I like the beads of rice. Fit is good, but not perfect. Bracelet is nice, and milled clasp is good. Only downside is folded end links. The President version seems like a little lower in quality. fit is the same, but stamped clasp that's not quite as good. Also folded end links. Strapcode bracelets will be nicer, but also a bit more too.
This is an excellent, measured and detailed review. I particularly appreciated your discussion regarding the alignment issues with the compass. I originally was put off with this watch because of that problem, but your reasonable discussion has put it in a new perspective for me. I am definitely going to consider the ivory watch with the gold indices. Thanks for the wonderful and thoughtful insight. I just subscribed.
My bezel is off a tad, but I think it is due to the wobbling that can happen in the mechanism. I noticed that if you put the S on the top both N and S then line up, while N on top does not. That does suggest it's not the printing, but the way it changes positions slightly top to bottom.
I eventually caved and picked up a new “ghost” here in Japan when one seller on Amazon put a couple for sale at about $600. This particular model really is a great looking watch and considering Seiko are putting 4r36 movements in watches up to $700 (e.g the darth turtle) , getting this excellent movement with sapphire for a similar price may soon be considered a bargain!
Most watches that have cyclops…look like a cyclops, this watch has a dewdrop. I’ve actually had people ask me if I had a drop of rain on my watch! it’s elegant. It’s perfect and I love it.
Once again, a well-thought-out review with solid points. Huge thanks for taking the time to research and review the bracelets! I’m looking forward to that video. I’m hoping for close attention to detail: endlinks and how they fit, links, screws, clasps, finishing, durability, solidity, feel, weight, looks, value, all of it :) It’s amazing how there is almost no information or reviews about aftermarket bracelets, even though they sell a lot. As you said, even the sellers themselves don’t know if their bracelets will fit a watch! If I was selling them, I think I would do my homework better. Another example of this problem is the Hamilton Khaki King; there are rumors online that the bracelet of the black dial version won’t fit the cream dial version. I’ve tried to find out about it, but even contacting Hamilton themselves didn’d clarify the matter - they just said it ”should fit”, but they weren’t sure. I have the cream dial version just like you do, and would really like to buy the stock bracelet for it, but ”should fit” is just an unacceptable official answer for a bracelet which costs about 160 euros alone. Anyway, thanks again for a good job! Your channel and Just One More Watch are two of my favourite watch channels. It really shows you put a lot of time, thought and effort into these.
I have an 017 and it's perfectly aligned. Your investigation was helpful as was you review. I too love this "Ghost" Alpinist. I also have the 035 so I completely understand the versatility. IMO your review shows how this is the perfect every day watch, timing bezel and date included. Thank you.
It's my birthday today and my wife and son bought me the Ghost with a strap code super oyster bracelet, just fitted and looks incredible, best looking watch available IMO
About the internal bezel play, I have never seen nor encountered anything like that with my Legend Diver and Polaris Memovox. Mind you, I’m quite observant when it comes to my watches. I tend to find myself unintentionally observing the dials of my watches more times than I’d like to admit on a daily basis. Regardless, it was always a pleasure when you lend your perspective on these watches. Great review, might pick this up even though I already have the original Alpinist in green and gold. 👍🏼
Thanks. I wonder if Longines & JLC are doing anything different from a build perspective, or if they are just much more observant in lining things up and weeding out the ones that don't.
The new white Alpinist is by far my favorite version. I’m also ok with the price, no one is being forced to buy it. The only design element I still can’t get past, are the asymmetrical crowns. But even that could change with over time, as certain designs kind of grow on you after a while. The Seiko Monsters come to mind.
I passed up the green gold version so many times because I couldn’t get over the colors. I’m glad I did. That blue one on the other hand will be mine before the end of the year.
My favourite part in this review was your analyze of the compass misalignment. First off I've actually never seen any comments on this in other reviewers on the Alpinists (I might've missed out on that), and it's something you'd hope would be correct for the costs these are galloping up to now. BUT second, it was interesting to hear that other makers in your collection wasn't exactly perfect in that matter as well. Of course that's not a defense to Seiko QC issues, but it was an interesting turn. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. On this one I think its a matter of reality vs expectations. At this price they should figure out how to have everything lined up. Yet since i haven't seen anyone else do it (at least not yet), it's hard for me to really come down on them for it. Originally that was the plan, and I was going to get footage from my other compressor style watches. Yet everyone I looked at was a little bit off.
Great review! Thank you. Subscribed! I got the SARB017 on STAIB 20 mm mesh. I just love the ''old world'', gold and green look of the watch. Nothing quite like it on the market :)
"If Seiko says it's OK, I guess it's OK." Although I do not quite agree with that. I also do not mind having cyclopes on a watch and I do like the green dial version of it.
I've seen the non-screw down bezel crown a few times, and it's always worried me a little if you actually take it deep in the water. The O-rings should be sufficient, but I've always worried about accidentally turning it under water.
The deeper you go, the more pressure is applied to the seals and the tighter they seal against the stem. Until they fail, which will be way beyond 200m. Rest easy, it’ll be fine.
I'm new to watches, but the lack of screw down on the compass crown confused me too! I just thought it would need the same spec as the main crown to get the 200m rating.
Being left handed the bezels don't bother me a bit. If and doubtful I get another Alpinist, probably a good idea to wait sometime for them to up the QC. My King Turtle on right on with the bezel alignment, and they (green and save the ocean) are JDM versions. From what I understand all Alpinist's are Japanese made.
Thank you so much for this review. I was toying with buying the new green alpinist. Now with your review I think the precious version is my best bet. Wonderful review.
Owned the SARB017 for just over a year now - tremendous value for money and personally I just love my green-gold version. Great to see Seiko bring out all these new options. Great review as always!
Blown away by this review! I've been watching watch reviews for a long time and never come across your channel. Safe to say I have a new favorite. Keep ut the good work! I owned the green baby apinist for some time. Agree with you, my biggest gripe was the height of the watch. Wish they would eliminate the display caseback, nothing to see really. Kind of regret selling it, but this white dial looks tempting.
Thanks! It's much appreciated! I've always considered myself to be a cult favorite among watch geeks. When people find my channel, they eventually stick around for a while. What do you think of the "new" retro Alpinists without the compass.
@@RelativeTime So I owned the green one, got a bargain and thought I would check it out. Lovely watch, but some complaints. -Some dust/grit on the dial face -Too tall for it's other dimentions -Somewhat top heavy on the bracelet -Only 2 microadjustments on the clasp left me caught between too loose an too tight -REALLY wish the lumed the printed arabics But overall, I'm just nitpicking really, great watch for the 450$ price I paid. Would probably not buy for retail price. Really thinking of getting your ghost Alpinist, as I belive the bigger diameter will help on the wearability with such a tall watch. Also I see Uncle Seiko now does solid endlinks for their BoR bracelet, and that looks gorgeous. Thanks for the reply! Have a nice weekend.
I like the cyclops, at least from the video, I've never seen a real one up close. The bezel alignment is weird. I wonder if it's just more noticeable on a compass bezel than on other types of bezels. Those little lume pips lasted way longer than I expected. I think the black version on the bracelet is my favorite.
I have just purchased the Green dial version SPB121J1,it's a stunning watch. Now being a very long time user of Seiko divers of all models,I was expecting the chapter ring/compass to be misaligned,I had to rub my eyes, the compass is spot on at any position. Just goes to prove Seiko can do it properly if they try.
Great, detailed review as always. I’m really liking the new 38mm Aplinist models that got leaked. They ditch the compass bezel and have a screw down 3 o’clock crown. They look way better and it solves at least one of the alignment issues. Unfortunately I’m not willing to buy Seikos Nader their new pricing scheme which is a good thing as I already have too many watches.
I’m not sure how you could justify charging more and getting less (same movement but no compass bezel) but yes I’d expect them to be very similar in price.
Man that is one handsome watch for any occasion. But when you got to the inner bezel not lining up---that was a major deal breaker for me. I hope Seiko will address this soon.
Dear friend, surprisingly, If you take a look to the dial, you may notice that the indices alignment with the hands center looks wrong. This could explain the moving misalignment of the bazel. This is discouraging about buying a japanese perfection item...
No, the dial indices being centered with the hands perforation. You need a transparent ruled ruler to check it. Take a line between opposite indices and over the center… I did it on your dial photos… I may be wrong of course
@@claudioviniciocottoarechav8751 it's entirely possible that it might be a little off. I think that, as well as the dial not being perfectly centered with the case happens more than people think. After all, when they put these things together they have to leave a little bit of room. Just be able to fit it in and out of the case. Or to be able to easily mount and dismount a dial. It's just that some designs show off this flaw more than others. Although it's also really hard to say just from these videos. I try to get the camera lined up nicely with the dial, but I know oftentimes it's not perfectly centered.
@@RelativeTime Thanks for the explanation, I wasn't aware of it. Actually I do care a lot for bazel indicators accuracy alignment with the 12 hours indici. But never have taken to much care about the other ones. Question: For sure this kind of "error" may be of value for handcrafted watches, but what about industrial manufacturing? Should we be more demanding?
Relative Time, The bracelet is good quality, but it doesn’t quite fit my wrist... it’s either too loose or a bit too tight. Planning to get a Strapcode for it. Purchased through a Jewelry store out in New Jersey.
Depends on the instance it seems. I just got the black shark tooth version. My compass cardinals are perfect everywhere but at 6, where it is off by 1/5th of a secon marker. Not too bad, didnt notice until you pointed it out. Nice review, thanks! :)
Was the Sarb a scratch magnet? So far that might be my biggest gripe. It doesn't look bad at all in person. yet on camera it really started showing them off.
I really thought that Alpinist looked killer on that stainless steel bracelet. Not the beads of rice one but the other one. And it looked great on that green and silver nato. Great looking watch. I think I'll wait to see if there's gonna be a price drop. Enjoyed the video...
It's only a matter of time before it goes down. I don't think it will ever get Sarb017 territory, but hopefully it will get down to at least $500. I think Uncle Seiko calls that the President Bracelet. Not bad for about $70, but it's not as well made as the beads of rice version. Strapcode has some awesome ones too, but a little bit more.
Great long term review man. I use to own the SPB119J1 cream dial alpinist. I think for a 200m WR, sapphire crystal amazingly designed field watch, its great compared to swiss offering with the exact same specs, if there are ones. The watch is worth 700-800USD imo. Yes its not the perfect watch with bezel misalignment with it not being securely fast within the case, which i think is a really good point you made. I think more thought needed to be put onto strap options, I personally thought the alpinist was way too classy and i didnt want to spend money on another leather strap so i ended up selling the watch. If i were a collector of seiko pieces, or just one in general i would've gotten the sarb017 and if i was an alpinist fanatic, id get the black alpinist because at least it shows a bit more value with the bracelet and its design. Anyways, this was an extremely well done review, professional and very nice imagery, you are hella underrated.
Thanks for a thorough review. I'm glad I bought a Lum-Tec, C6 for a dress watch, instead of the Seiko, Prospex, Alpinist. The Lum-Tec has the same movement, but the power reserve is less than 48 hours. I bought my C6 new and negotiated a price of $425. The only Seiko i want is the Grand Seiko with the Spring Drive.
@@RelativeTime, I like mine. I own two. I also own an X2. I'm thinking about buying a 350M-3 if they make more, it's sold out. I'd pay full price for the 350M-3, I like it so much.
Have you, since you made this video, looked at the new No Compass Alpinist? A comparison video would be nice to see. Thanks for what you do. Keep at it!
Haven't seen them in person. Love to do review of one, just finding it hard to justify the cost. I think they are going for just as much if not more then the traditional alpinist.
Excellent review, very detailed, honest and practical advice that will help me to make the decision buying this watch, but for now I will wait for the price go down little bit more. Around $850-$900 Australian dollars depend on versions. Thanks very much.
I saw the specs on this one, and ended up purchasing a new SARB017 from Amazon for $445. I really don't care about the cyclops, or the display case back. It basically came down to the movement, and I couldn't justify the $300 cost difference for an increase of 20 hours in the power reserve. I'm really hoping I made the right decision!
@@RelativeTime Thanks a lot for the reassurance! The green dial was the main thing that attracted me to it! I really enjoy your reviews! Please keep up the great work!
Don't forget, movement aside, the fact that the crystal is now AR coated. Holding a new one next to the old SARB, the new ones look that much clearer. But the 400 buck price on a SARB017 was after years of it being on the market, and then getting popular because they were dirt cheap. The model you reviewed seems to end up there now, it's down to 500 bucks in the EU. So a nice review of a nice watch. I got the blue one on bracelet. But kind sir, could you please let me know (or do a vid) on the half-canvas, half-leather straps you were using here? They were gorgeous, and I'd love to know where you got them.
Since people usually ask, I always try to link the straps I use in the description. I think the one you are talking about is a Corudra / Leather Hybrid one from Vario. vario.sg/collections/2-piece-cordura-leather-watch-strap Love the strap, highly recommend them. Only thing I would personally change is to have them taper a little more, but otherwise they are great.
I have the old green Alpinist and I love it. I was hunting the old white Alpinist but just couldn't find it. This caught my eyes and after the whole Coronavirus thing blows over, I think I might get one.
I bought this watch, and I am keeping it. BUT, I still do NOT like the cyclops. The moment I can replace the original crystal with a no cyclops crystal, I will. Nice review!
Short version: Orient Outdoor. I think the finishing is a little bit better, and more of a unique design. Although I go into more detail here: ruclips.net/video/uHB3Cly7-QY/видео.html
When is that white Dan Henry 1970 (8:14) review due? I'm deliberating beetwen the white and blue accent one and could use a review to help with that decision.
Great Question. Honestly not sure. I’ve had it for a bit, and been meaning to do it for quite some time, but it’s one that keeps getting pushed back when I wind up getting other watches. Although I’ve been slowly getting the footage I need to do a review of it, so I’m hoping near the end of next month. Anything in particular you want to know about it?
I'd buy this watch in a heartbeat if it had Alpinist on the dial. I'm not sure why, but it is a big deal for me that they eliminated the actual name of the watch from the dial. I'm surprised people ate not picking on this.
Well the SARB017 doesn't have it either. I think that's when they took it off. It just says: Automatic Diashock 23 Jewel 20 Bar Although they still left it on the cashback. Where here it's completely void.
Bro. You gave a good, clear and nice review on this new seiko.alpinist. Your voice matches with the video that gives a clear explanation on this review. The analysis is not too fast not too slow. Its just right to understand a review for alpinist. It also gave me a good idea on what to choose. Cheers bro👍.. Thanks
I am thinking about buying this watch. As for this bezel, not sure what is that all about, but my Orient Explorer is simply perfect when it comes to this. Everything is aligned, nothing moves up or down, really do not understand how Seiko allows this to hapen.
I bought the sport outdoor and I love it, I’m considering a green Sarb017 but I am trying to talk myself out of it. Which do you prefer more, your Alpinist or the Orient Star? Great reviews, always multiple straps and great photography.
I’m not sure if you saw, but I did a 3 way comparison between the Orient Star, Alpinist and Hamilton Khaki King. Field Watch Comparison : Hamilton Khaki King / Seiko Alpinist / Orient Star Outdoor. Who's the King That said, I like all 3 of them, and no plans on selling any. Yet if I had to get rid of one, I think the Alpinist would be the first to go. It’s still a great watch, and I love it on the beads of rice bracelet. But there are things about the other two I like a little better.
Relative Time, that video actually came up on my recommendations today and I watched it. Thanks for the reply. I think I’ll hold off on the Alpinist awhile. I was feeling the pressure to buy because I want the Sarb017 without the cyclops and I don’t feel like paying the high prices a few years from now as supplies dry up.
I was so unsure about spending my hard-earned money on the Alpinist because you RUclipsrs find so many negative ( and good ) things about the watch. But I spent it, and in spite of all I love this watch! I was lucky mi bezel isn't so bad alight 😜 Thanks for the videos 👍
Hope to see a video about the bracelet swap on these. Im planning to buy this but i like to swap it out to a bracelet but coudnt find a video or picture for inspiration. You the only one i did see talk about swapping to bracelet but dunno if you are sure about the fitting.
BTW, I bought bracelets from both Strapcode and Uncle Seiko for my SPB1J, and yes, they fit the SARB017. Also btw, maybe the power reserve is a hit or miss...but in my case I can confirm its around 70h.
There's too many shady dealers when you buy them online they've already switched out the parts and you get them and they're kind of scratched the dials are off.... But if you buy it from a reputable Seiko dealer you're going to get quality and they're going to stand by it and you could have buy it and see it in person and when you do you're going to be like wow I want a few of them
Most often I will try to keep the North and South aligned with 12 and 6. Was it that hard. Well honestly they should have still kept the 017. To me it was a looker
Love your truth full reviews, the good and bad. Aplinists are there own thing, love them or hate it. If I was to get another probably 1. would wait 6 months, 2. buy JDM, 3. I think I'd go white. And yeah it's a strap monster.
Great video, I have the previous green version and I love it. I have it on an oyster bracelet from Strapcode and it is a killer that pulls compliments all day! Subscribed
Saw some pics. last I heard they took the catalog down, then re-released it without them in it. Maybe it wasn't quite ready, who knows. They look good, but no idea on pricing.
Great review. Honest and objective. I don't believe the pricing issue is isolated to the Alpinist. Dropping the SKX and introducing the 5KX is comparable, and I have heard similar mumblings from others about different watches (however I cannot remember by whom and about what and haven't done the research... that's your job! 🙂). Is Seiko repositioning itself? Is the Seiko 5 brands 'affordable Seiko' reputation being reinforced? Is Seiko *really trying to cement* its three-tier pricing policy with the Prospex line? Does Orient somehow fit into the equation? All good questions IMO. Anyway back to it. For example: Seiko 5 - $ Seiko - $$ Seiko Prospex - $$$ In some respects one could answer 'yeah...so what's new??' However I would say that 'what's new' is that this seems to have less to do with different levels of craftmenship, and more to do with levels of demand. I can hear a Seiko exec somewhere yelling: "why are we retailing the Alpinist for $400? They love it! Just put a new movement in it - but don't go crazy!, just use something that doesn't cost us much but make sure it has the specks to 'sell it'. And whack a Prospex logo on it too. Bang! $700! They'll pay what we tell 'em to pay". So the question is: Is Seiko gouging us because we love the watches design? Does Seiko listen to our gripes re. specs etc.? Have the above questions become rhetorical? Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the new Alpinist and think it's WELL worth $400...
Great review. I really like my new 119. I had to decide if I should spend $850 to service my Oyster Perpetual Date or to get this for less money. I made the right choice! My dress watch is a Zenith. I wanted a nice watch that I could easily read and that would be durable; the 70 hour reserve is marvelous as well. I have become a new Seiko fan.
@@RelativeTime Wonky as in impossible to regulate, due to very low amplitude (180° tops on a good day). This is a known 6R15 issue, but since it stays reasonably wthin 'spec' it's often ignored by people who don't know that a watch shouldn't go from -10 to +15 spd and back over a week of wearing it. Since it was a Japanese import, the seller in Europe gave me basically no warranty. My watchmaker disassembled the balance and cleaned it to no avali. Seiko by nature provides NO parts at all, so forget actually doing real service on the movement. I finally replaced the movement myself with an NE15 sourced in the UK (more than double the price of the most expensive 4R out there, but at least I found one). Runs litterally spot-on, +7spw (seconds per week) out of it's little box, and an amplitude of 280°....
@@RelativeTime I hope so for your sake. The less than stated PR is not a good sign. PR is generally longer than stated. My NE15 actually goes 60 hours, although I can't make accuracy claims over the last 10 or so hours of that, but still: new clothes, emperor?
My Sarb17 initially kept terrible time, and in one position the timegrapher plot looked like a Jackson Pollock painting. It would sometimes even stop while wearing it! Luckily mine has a US warranty card. After 2 trips to Seiko service, it is good for 2 seconds/day.
I was torn between the white dial Alpinist, and an Oris Big Crown Pointer Date with a similar dial. I opted for the latter, and don't regret it, but seeing this video, I do feel like I missed out on a really nice piece.
@@RelativeTime Silver/White dial, with rose gold crown, bezel, hands and indices (on a two-tone bracelet). A slightly dressy looking piece, but still a good all-rounder on a nice leather strap. Jomashop had a limited time offer - now sold out - back in November (only $459). Wasn't sure I truly wanted that version (I'd really wanted the standard type with green dial), but ordered one as the price just seemed too good to pass up. Glad I did, lovely watch.
If you like cleaner dials the Seiko definitely has an advantage. Supposedly a new version of the Alpinists will be coming without a compass. Seen a few pics, but no idea when. Although I'm not sure if it's really an alpinist without a compass.
Yours have the same tiny black spots on the dial, mine had the same. On yours its not as bad, but its there. Its the paintjob badly executed and the paint is simply missing. I sold mine since I couldnt live with it. My Sarb017 is perfect
Very nice presentation on the cream dial Alpinist. I unfortunately am stuck between the green and cream dials. Frankly I want them both. There are some SARB017s still available out there, but to be honest, I actually like the cyclops and the exhibition back. Just which color to buy. Now however there is a new issue as seiko has updated the design again. The new watch is slightly smaller at 38mm and more streamlined by loosing the crown guards. Gone is both the cyclops and rotating compass bezel so I guess you won't have to worry about misaligned components going forward. But also, by loosing these elements, the Alpinist has lost a lot of its originality. Frankly, Seiko just turned the Alpinist into a Hamilton Kaki Field Automatic. One last point, another significant increase in price at $1100.00 Seiko is really pushing the value boundary. I look forward to a future video with the next Alpinist and hearing your honest opinion.
It's OK. Unlike Strap code it's has a folded end link, and the clasp is stamped. It's not bad for the price, but just OK. Surprisingly the beads of rice isn't much more and I think it's a better quality. Same folded end link, but a milled clasp.

I agree 100%
Absolutely loved the review. The way any review should be done. From multiple angles, to various strap etc. Hats off.
Best review I've seen of this watch. I"ve owned this watch for about a year and it really has grown on me. Very nice watch. Would have preferred Alpinist closed case-back, and retro style Alpinist script on the face though. Would recommend this watch nonetheless.
Just bought the black on bracelet. Looking forward to hearing about your other bracelet options.
One of the most handsome field watches on the market, at any price. Great video, thanks for sharing!
It really is.
Thanks for this calm, informed, insightful and well shot video 👍
I'm buying this because it has a cyclops.
I'm not buying this because it has a cyclops.
I’m not buying it because I am a cyclops 👁 also because I’ve already bought the Baby Alpinist.
@@Krasnopyourov actually me bro I preordered a spb243 instead, worth the wait ngl
The real OG SCVC009 Green Red Alpinist had a cyclops, its a close reissue of it and the sarb017 in my opinion
I bought the SPB117J1 despite the cyclops.

You may be right. I think the Sumos with the 6r35 are in the $800.
"I looked at my other compressor style watches, I have seven" sorry but I had to laugh at that statement.
Did you see my SOTC? It's a little out of hand. 😜
I’m hoping for close attention to detail: endlinks and how they fit, links, screws, clasps, finishing, durability, solidity, feel, weight, looks, value, all of it :)
It’s amazing how there is almost no information or reviews about aftermarket bracelets, even though they sell a lot.
Thank you.
I am watching your video keeping my sarb017 green dial in my hand and saying yes mine is still the best, for ever!
Most comprehensive and detailed review, thank you.
It's my birthday today and my wife and son bought me the Ghost with a strap code super oyster bracelet, just fitted and looks incredible, best looking watch available IMO
That's an awesome present. Happy Birthday!
Dude your voice is so calming it's like ASMR
Being 60, I prefer the big date, cyclops.
Kevin Corkery Looking glasses ???
I always have them on me.
@@lowersaxon i am 21, i also prefer the cyclops
The new white Alpinist is by far my favorite version. I’m also ok with the price, no one is being forced to buy it. The only design element I still can’t get past, are the asymmetrical crowns. But even that could change with over time, as certain designs kind of grow on you after a while. The Seiko Monsters come to mind.
I love the asymmetrical crowns, distinguishes the hands and makes it easier to read! Awesome watch
I passed up the green gold version so many times because I couldn’t get over the colors. I’m glad I did. That blue one on the other hand will be mine before the end of the year.
How much are they going for these days?
I ordered mine directly from Seiko US. 10% off was helpful in getting the price below the list 725. I have an 017 and I love it. Great video Shane.
Dude, first time here. I love the review. Following this page right away.
Thanks! Welcome to the channel.
Glad you found it useful. 👍
Owned the SARB017 for just over a year now - tremendous value for money and personally I just love my green-gold version. Great to see Seiko bring out all these new options. Great review as always!
Thanks! You ever get a strapcode bracelet for it?
Excellent review. The Alpinist is on my bucket list of watches. The particular dial you have does really go well with many strap choices.
My Alpinist SPB201JI limited edition comes tomorrow, Starting to love Gray after my Longines HC
-Some dust/grit on the dial face
-Too tall for it's other dimentions
-Somewhat top heavy on the bracelet
-Only 2 microadjustments on the clasp left me caught between too loose an too tight
-REALLY wish the lumed the printed arabics
But overall, I'm just nitpicking really, great watch for the 450$ price I paid.
That was one of my thoughts. A compass will divide a circle up by 360, where a timing bezel is 60. So maybe you notice the imprecision more.
I have just purchased the Green dial version SPB121J1,it's a stunning watch. Now being a very long time user of Seiko divers of all models,I was expecting the chapter ring/compass to be misaligned,I had to rub my eyes, the compass is spot on at any position. Just goes to prove Seiko can do it properly if they try.
great review!!! just ordered mine at MSRP I don't know the exchange rate but its close 745 AUD
If you want a thinner Alpinist,go for one of the very early ones from the 1960s, specifically one of the champion 850s
I'm just waiting to hear the price on those. I'm assuming it's going to be just as much or more as this one.
I’m not sure how you could justify charging more and getting less (same movement but no compass bezel) but yes I’d expect them to be very similar in price.
Your voice is so beautiful! It's like music to my ears!
Thank you so much!
i love the cyclops..btw can you get an aftermarket solid case back to thin the watch out?
Not that I know of, but I'll look into it.
I own the SBDC136 and I love it I’m new to the watch scene and I’m happy with my purchase it cost me $700 shipped from Japan 🇯🇵
Do you mean the dial may not be perfectly centered with the case?
@@claudioviniciocottoarechav8751 I think so. Yet. Ultimately it also comes down to price. At one point is it acceptable, and what point isn't it.
The polished Seiko bezels are a much softer steel than the cases. Probably to get a tight seal with the crystal.
Awesome review! You have a way of bringing out the beauty of the watch. Ended up purchasing the black version for $600.
Thanks! Black one looks great, let me know how you like the braclet. Where did you find it for $600?
Relative Time, The bracelet is good quality, but it doesn’t quite fit my wrist... it’s either too loose or a bit too tight. Planning to get a Strapcode for it. Purchased through a Jewelry store out in New Jersey.
Depends on the instance it seems.
I just got the black shark tooth version.
My compass cardinals are perfect everywhere but at 6, where it is off by 1/5th of a secon marker.
Not too bad, didnt notice until you pointed it out.
Nice review, thanks! :)
The scratches and slow running movement is why I moved off my sarb035. The only Seiko in my collection is the Snxs79j1 and I am pleased.
Was the Sarb a scratch magnet? So far that might be my biggest gripe. It doesn't look bad at all in person. yet on camera it really started showing them off.
@@RelativeTime He may be right, the case of Sarb is scratch magnet, Sarx series are more scratch resistant.
That's a pretty good price. Some point I really need to look into Lum-Tec.
I switched the original strap the opposite way and it works fine and feels normal.
Excellent review, very detailed, honest and practical advice that will help me to make the decision buying this watch, but for now I will wait for the price go down little bit more. Around $850-$900 Australian dollars depend on versions. Thanks very much.
Thanks. Glad it was helpful. It might take a while, but it should eventually go down.
Right size, nice dial and Cyclopes what is not to like
I saw the specs on this one, and ended up purchasing a new SARB017 from Amazon for $445. I really don't care about the cyclops, or the display case back. It basically came down to the movement, and I couldn't justify the $300 cost difference for an increase of 20 hours in the power reserve. I'm really hoping I made the right decision!
As long as you like the green dial, I think you made the right call. There really isn’t any major improvements over the SARB017.
I think the one you are talking about is a Corudra / Leather Hybrid one from Vario.
vario.sg/collections/2-piece-cordura-leather-watch-strap
Love the strap, highly recommend them. Only thing I would personally change is to have them taper a little more, but otherwise they are great.
Thoroughly enjoyable video, I do like that cyclops and it's a tough call whether to wait for prices to drop
I have the old green Alpinist and I love it. I was hunting the old white Alpinist but just couldn't find it. This caught my eyes and after the whole Coronavirus thing blows over, I think I might get one.
Hopefully the price comes down a bit by then.
I bought this watch, and I am keeping it. BUT, I still do NOT like the cyclops. The moment I can replace the original crystal with a no cyclops crystal, I will. Nice review!
Thanks. You might be able to just remove it. I've heard of other people doing it by using an open flame. I'm betting there's some videos around.
It is a gorgeous wrist watch and I love it specifically because of the Cyclops
I’m loving it’s overlooked sibling- SBDC073 (champagne/gilt). Tough and classic...this series is the most handsome of the Prospex line!
That's awesome too. I noticed they are starting too sell for a little bit more too.
Nice arc on the misalignment story. 👍 I’m glad I didn’t skip ahead.
If you had to choose only one? This or Orient Outdoor and why? Thanks for the excellent video
Short version: Orient Outdoor. I think the finishing is a little bit better, and more of a unique design.
Although I go into more detail here:
ruclips.net/video/uHB3Cly7-QY/видео.html
It just says:
Automatic
Diashock 23 Jewel
20 Bar
Although they still left it on the cashback. Where here it's completely void.
Yeah it’s one of those things people think they remember seeing. It just had automatic, diashock 23 jewels, 20 bar
Of the two, I chose the Casio Oceanus S100 and am glad I did.
Different type of watch, but still a solid choice. Had the T200 for a while. Only recently sold it to get a Oceanus S5000.
Thanks
Omg.. On that beads of rice US bracelet.. Thats the keeper! Wow!
It looks really good on that one.
I am thinking about buying this watch. As for this bezel, not sure what is that all about, but my Orient Explorer is simply perfect when it comes to this. Everything is aligned, nothing moves up or down, really do not understand how Seiko allows this to hapen.
Toying with buying one, but not sure if I can ever get used to the cyclops
Good review.....You have convinced me that my recent $399 SARB017 purchase was a very good value....but I do like the looks of the "Ghost".
At $400 it was a far better value. If I had seen that before I hand I might not of got this one.
Even after I added the Uncle Seiko BOR bracelet (which I really like), the SARB017 seems to be a good deal.
Very nice review! Thanks. I’ll wait for prices to go down.
Who's the King
That said, I like all 3 of them, and no plans on selling any.
I was lucky mi bezel isn't so bad alight 😜
Thanks for the videos 👍
Hope to see a video about the bracelet swap on these. Im planning to buy this but i like to swap it out to a bracelet but coudnt find a video or picture for inspiration. You the only one i did see talk about swapping to bracelet but dunno if you are sure about the fitting.
Here is one I did on using Uncle Seiko bracelets. Hope that helps.

@@RelativeTime thank you!!!
But if you buy it from a reputable Seiko dealer you're going to get quality and they're going to stand by it and you could have buy it and see it in person and when you do you're going to be like wow I want a few of them
You talking eBay dealers or Grey market dealers?
Most often I will try to keep the North and South aligned with 12 and 6. Was it that hard. Well honestly they should have still kept the 017. To me it was a looker
Love your truth full reviews, the good and bad. Aplinists are there own thing, love them or hate it. If I was to get another probably 1. would wait 6 months, 2. buy JDM, 3. I think I'd go white. And yeah it's a strap monster.
I got the green Alpinist with taxes paid $650. I like the watch !
I would expect the cardinal positions to line-up but not the others, since there are 16 compass positions and only 12 hour position the watch dial.
Great video, I have the previous green version and I love it. I have it on an oyster bracelet from Strapcode and it is a killer that pulls compliments all day! Subscribed
Thanks! I love that beads of rice bracelt, but I will have to get a strapcode.
There is a newer alpinist coming out. It’s in the new catalogue
For example:
Seiko 5 - $
Seiko - $$
Seiko Prospex - $$$
In some respects one could answer 'yeah...so what's new??'
However I would say that 'what's new' is that this seems to have less to do with different levels of craftmenship, and more to do with levels of demand.
I can hear a Seiko exec somewhere yelling:
"why are we retailing the Alpinist for $400? They love it! Just put a new movement in it - but don't go crazy!, just use something that doesn't cost us much but make sure it has the specks to 'sell it'. And whack a Prospex logo on it too. Bang! $700!
They'll pay what we tell 'em to pay".
So the question is:
Is Seiko gouging us because we love the watches design?
Does Seiko listen to our gripes re. specs etc.?
Have the above questions become rhetorical?
Don't get me wrong.
I LOVE the new Alpinist and think it's WELL worth $400...
The cyclops wouldn't bother me as much as a color-mismatched date wheel on the green and black models.
Yeah, I already removed cyclop from my black one, but date wheel bugs me too.
Great review it covers everything we need to know ❤❤thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Hope you enjoy it. Mine has stayed on a beads of rice bracelet since I did this. Love the way it looks on that.
I bought the srb017 when i was 16 an sold it in 2018 but i bought a new srb017 a few days ago. Cant wait to get it!
The Sarb017 is a much better deal right now then the new ones.
@@RelativeTime prices have gone up already since I bought it. Must have caught the bottom unless there will be another bottom.
The SARB017 was a somewhat legendary dumping-ground for wonky 6R15-movements.
Wonky as in short lived or wonky as in not regulated right?
@@Bob.martens well glad it ended well. Wonder if the 6r35s will behave.
Which version of the Oris did you get? Been looking at those myself.
I still like your Hamilton w/day&date at the 12 best for this watch segment. Thx for the video.
Some point I might do a 3-way comparison between the Hammy, this and the Orient Star.
I like that dial is not so overloaded as Hamilton khaki
If you like cleaner dials the Seiko definitely has an advantage. Supposedly a new version of the Alpinists will be coming without a compass. Seen a few pics, but no idea when. Although I'm not sure if it's really an alpinist without a compass.
Great treatment of the alignment issue and other other youtubers would be well served to try to apply this logic.
Thanks! I feel that if I'm going to call something/one out for something, I should at least have some proof to back up what I'm saying.
Yours have the same tiny black spots on the dial, mine had the same. On yours its not as bad, but its there. Its the paintjob badly executed and the paint is simply missing. I sold mine since I couldnt live with it. My Sarb017 is perfect
How much did you sell it for? I have mine on ebay and lots of views no buyers yet
Great review. I want that president style bracelet. How is the fit? Cheers.
It's OK. Unlike Strap code it's has a folded end link, and the clasp is stamped. It's not bad for the price, but just OK. Surprisingly the beads of rice isn't much more and I think it's a better quality. Same folded end link, but a milled clasp.
