The Seiko Alpinist SARB017. Deemed by many watch enthusiasts to be a cult classic. Discontinued only a few years ago, yet some still pop up very rarely, and when they are all sold, there will be no more “new” SARB017’s left. My watch was purchased on Amazon USA as “new old stock” for $588 with all taxes and delivery included. I got the watch in 2 weeks and it was as expected when I opened its little box. I fell in love!
This video is a nice little guide to this cult classic. I discuss its spec and features as well as the history of Alpinist watches, to give context to the heritage behind this model line from Seiko. I adore the brand history and feel they offer some stunning pieces that really need to be known about by the people who are unhappy with some of Seiko’s other offerings. This is a JDM model watch, as seems to be an example of Seiko at their best.
I really appreciate you watching my content, and if you wish to support the channel, apart from subscribing, check out my eBay shop, as there I have a nice selection of straps and watches I hope you like! Thanks so much. www.ebay.co.uk... The small print: All watches in all my videos are genuine items and not copies or fakes. Homage watches are legal and I just review them. I am careful to use the word "homage" when presenting that type of watch, because that is what they are. All images and sounds used are either my own or used under the fair use policy. Thank you. It's shiny because it's a gentlemen's adventuring watch. The glint from the polish gets noticed by girls and rescue party's.

I can see why this watch generated so much craziness and desire. I certainly prefer this one to the newer versions with the magnifier on the crystal. I also think your green tropic strap makes for an excellent look. Nicely done.

I had never checked on the time keeping of my SARB017 until recently. What I found amazed me. With constant wear (almost 24/7), and resting dial up when not on the wrist, my SARB017 has been minus O.54 seconds per day over the past 33 days. That is quartz level time keeping. They say that the 6r15 movement is like a box of chocolates because you never know what you are going to get, but with sapphire, 200m WR, screw down crown, no maintenance needed for 10 years, and better than COSC time keeping this watch is a keeper.

Alps in footage: Amazing rock formations and dried up glaciers
Alps for 90% of visitors during summer: Luscious greens with nice creeks and gravel paths, and occasionally feeding a few cows grass so that they get in the mood to let you pass. And a lot of forest.
So, in other words, the Alpinist understands the Alps, the dial colour is perfect.

The green and gold colourway is great. The brown leather strap compliments the watch and pops with those colours. There is something extremely nice about that crown/ crown guard. It's a good blend of dress watch/ utility and quite unique!

Very nicely done Dan ... I like the Alpinist, but prefer the SARB035. Looking forward to your review of that watch before I buy.... thank you in advance. Cheers.

I used to have one of these and I remember how beautiful it was but I flipped it. The watch wore really small even on my average wrist. And the inner rotating compass bezel constantly moving drove me mad. The brown faux croc stock leather strap is well known for being subpar. But especially on this brown premium leather strap of yours it looks cracking. I enjoyed the review, Cheers!

Changing the straps was the best thing you can do with a sarb, with the leather it makes it look way too old fashioned but strap change it made it look fun, sporty and cool ,all just with that quick change, cheers Dan.

I personally didn’t love it when I had it. The movement had issues. The internal ring was weird and shaky. I ended up ditching it and getting a khaki king.

I just got one from Amazon as well for around $470 And like you... I was STUNNED when I saw it in the flesh. The delicate hands, that gorgeous green, the history... it all took my breath away. Best watch money I've ever spent.

I put my SARB17 on a brown leather strap like you had in the outdoor pictures of your watch. That is just the perfect combo for me. It's still the jewel of my Seiko collection.

I totally agree with your assessment of this sarb017. I had it in mind for some time but was concerned that it would have limited use . I pulled the plug and purchased one from Amazon and WOW!! It punches way above its price point. I put it on a dark brown leather rally strap and it is beautiful. It is a distraction for me when I wear it because it is so classy....

All it needs is a double lume pip at the 12 index for orientation.
I normally wear mine on a maroon nato strap. I love my Alpinist, it’s been on so many holidays and dinner’s and snorkelling, hiking ect. Perfect week away watch. 😎

The poor man's answer to the Rolex Explorer. Stock strap is mediocre at best, then size, weight, and general design make it the perfect sport watch for anything dressier than a g-shock. Deffo one of my favorite go-tos.

Not necessarily a poor man's answer. I don't mind the look of the Rolex Explorer, but personally i see nothing special in it, and i don't care to own one. The alpinist is a totally different looking watch. And as soon as i saw one, i knew i had to get one.

It is early August 2022. Sarb 017……….try $1200.00 to $1500.00 USD on the horrible fake alligator strap. Available on EBAY etc. Stone ridiculous. Smh………..(got mine in 2015 off Amazon for $379.00 USD.….recently upgraded to a nice stainless steel “Oyster” with a milled clasp etc. I got new bracelet (about $120.USD) from Marc @ Long Island Watch where I regularly buy watches. Can not take my old (now NEW) watch off my wrist. Band made it new again! Great review to go with a great watch Dan! Thanks

My local watchshop has a few of this very model in stock for 486 pounds, and for that I could buy three good aliexpress watches, so I have hestitated. But your review is now making me reevaluate that. Tempting for sure.

Imagine you are climbing the highest mountains in Switzerland. But just a few steps before reaching the summit the always loose and misaligned compass bezel misdirects you seriously and you are falling down directly into the Geneva sea. Thank god your watch is water resistant to 200 m. What a relief! But then swimming around a little bit before being rescued by professionell Swiss rescue helicopters you realize that the green dial of your ‚I climb the highest mountains’ watch doesn‘t harmonize at all with the blue water all around you and you think: ‚damned, I should have bought one of these big clunky Seiko divers in blue; as all of my friends did‘. Well, too late.

I dive and I always wear a watch, along with my dive computer - They do different things! That said, an Alpinist isn't a dive watch, so 20Bar is plenty for dealing with most alpine conditions. I think the Alpinist is an acquired taste - I have one, but I'm thinking of selling it - It wears quite small I think, I nearly didn't even try it on when it arrived and it took a few days perseverance to get used to the size (and I'll wear sub-36mm vintage Seamasters quite happily).
The standard strap is a total disgrace though - I have Aliexpress specials with nicer straps than this Seiko, but then Seikos have always been a bit cheap on their straps and bracelets, at least on the low to mid price models.
It is a nice looking watch, with lots of details to enjoy along with that lovely (I think, it's divisive though) dial colour - Just not sure it's enough to keep its place in the collection as I look to slim it down a bit.

This ones a bit out of reach for me. Especially with the price hike. So I got an alternative from the Prospex land series instead. The Seiko srpd31 with the compass bezel and I'm tickled to bits with it. It would have been out of my price range as well if Jomashop didn't have a smoking deal on it the past month. Of course it relieved one itch only to expose another cause I recently handled a Seiko Arnie called the Urban Safari. 🤤

If you seen a Seiko Alpinist in a shop window chances are you'd pass on it. However, if you trust in the enthusiasts & reviewers advice the rewards of owning one are multiples of the cost. The newer version at almost double, just isn't worth it. Being out in the countryside with an Alpinist on your wrist, that's when its at its best; telling direction from the sun & time is great fun too. Providing you have SUN!

Will not buy another Seiko until they fix the quality issue, my Sarb017 Alpinist has movement issues within 6 years, stays behind in 1-2 days with 10-15 minutes without wearing it, just winding it and the rotating bezel was broken because it was flimsy from the start, now it repaired itself automatically.

The answer is no. 99.9% of the owners will never use that misaligned bezel. It's a thick peacock.
The answer is yes, if you fancy green.
Either way, grab a sarb033 and forget about this oddity.

Hey,have you ever gotten one where the lume hour balls are not dead center on the dial's painted rectangle under it? Like slightly to the right or to the left.... But only for a few hoirs, e.g. mine was from 6,7,8,9,10 all of the were not dead center...

  • @fteambjj
    @fteambjj 3 года назад

I just got my sarb017... i just realised the ball lume on the hour hands are missaligned, from hour 6 until 10 they are on the sides of the dials painted rectangle underneath. Is it fake? Refurbished? Its kind of driving me crazy and i cant return it unless they changes the machine inside.... Almost all pictures and videos i've seen their lume balls are dead center on the painted rectangle on the dial.... i've also have not found any one having the same complain as me on forums and googles. Its driving me nuts hahahaha. Im.taking it to the seiko watch but a friend of the seller. I hope they dont trick me. Any one has ever gotten the same thing? Hour hand lume not dead center where its supposed to be?
Also my lume hands when i shine and turn of the light the minute hand and the second hands looks like theres not enough lume on it? Looked like a little smudge which takes away some.of the brightness. Just a tiny bit but i noticed it. Like they didnt put enough of the lume on it.
