    Absolutely love it. The casing, the back and the main crown are so similar to my Shimano Dura-Ace watch which I know is a Seiko in disguise. 200 m water proof kinetic with a divers bezel and highly effective green flurorescent batons in the dark. Capacitor gave up after 6 years or so. Bought a kit on eBay with a rechargeable lithium battery and now 16 years later I can put it away for a month and it will still read full when I press the button. Best watch I have ever owned and it loses less than a second per month. Would only adjust it twice a year to account for summertime/wintertime when I lived in Europe. I wear it for absolutely everything, mountain biking and swimming included, since I'm not a collector with watches for different purposes. I've had others but they've all given up on me. It's now my only functional watch and it's never been serviced since I got it in 1999, that is if you don't count my change of the capacitor with a lithium battery in 2005 as a service. Unfortunately I can't find anything on RUclips about my trustworthy beloved watch of which only 2500 were made for the 25 years anniversary groupset of the Shimano Dura-Ace. Came with a nice blue leather strap that of course didn't like sweat and swimming and I had quite some trouble finding a 19 mm steel bracelet for it. My bike was stolen so I got another andonce again fitted it with the 25 year groupset so I have a perfect never used spare watch that one of my girls will probably get some years from now. Probably have to get rid of the capacitor right away though.

    I don't know about it becoming a classic, but it is my favorite right now. I've climbed mountains with it and went snorkeling with it. It is one tough mother. I even wear it in business meetings, using a black croc grain strap. Quite versatile really, because in low light (indoors), the green fades into black.

    Thanks for a great review… I know you did it sometime ago but I just found it. I watch everything that is ‘alpinist’...I’ve had my 017 for more than a year. It’s been discontinued of course and now they’ve replaced it with a slightly upgraded, much more expensive watch. I would highly recommend finding one of these as good condition used, or new old stock. It can be had (New) for $500 still today… The strap code bracelet with fitted endlinks just for this watch Turns this watch into something that competes with my Rolex Explorer. If green is not your thing and you don’t care about it being a Japanese mountaineering watch...The SARB 033 Is also a great watch and can still be had new for $400... They have recently re-released a new line of SARB Watches as well...If you want to pay $800 I’m sure it’s very nice but I’m like the 017 in the O33 they are going to lose value quickly and they have already started that downward slide. If you get an 017 or a 033 And don’t like it you’ll be able to flip it for exactly what you bought it for. Cheers!

    • @artl52
      @artl52  4 года назад +1

      Thx John. I plan to do a review of adding the bracelet to this watch. What do you think of the new Alpinists? Blue, white, etc.

    • @JohnBuckmaster-sw3wm
      @JohnBuckmaster-sw3wm 4 года назад

      @@artl52 I very much like the new alpinist… And I even like the magnifier which I didn’t think I would…Also nice to see that they’re giving you a quality strap and or bracelet option. I don’t really care for the price though…I just don’t see the justification for an almost 100% increase over the alpinist 017. Same goes for the Most recent SARB lineup.

    Very well done Art! I agree with the other posters in this comment section about your review being one of the best I've seen on this watch. I love the rate, diction, pitch, and sonorous quality of your voice. It reminds me very much of Earl Nightingale. Again well done and cheers! I love my Alpinist.
