You sir have the best "watch channel" that I have come across on RUclips. Your love of watches is apparent in all of your videos. Please stay true to the reason you started the channel as your subscriber count adds up. Thanks for your input and for sharing one of your passions with us. I am thrilled to see someone who owns top tier watches be proud to wear a Seiko without a snobbish bias. Cheers.

Just ordered a Grand Seiko . Your great vids are rubbing off on me. I thought it was a less obvious choice . l have never seen anyone wearing one. I do not mind that Alpinest , but, l think l did enough damage. Thanks again for your Wonderful channel.

I was looking for a good quality watch for years after wearing nothing but cheap Timex/Casio. Nothing ageist them, they did what I needed them to do but I wanted something more refined. After watching your reviews on the SARB033 and SARB017 bought them both. I will never regret that choice. They look great and wear even better. Thank you for the reviews you do and keep up the awesome work your doing!

    Great choices!
    My personal ranking would be:
    1. Orient Star Classic - great styling, impeccable finishing, power reserve indicator is super useful - amazing bang per buck dress watch.
    2. Tissot Visodate - my favourite aesthetic of the 5 - the cool retro vibe has great wow factor.
    3. Seiko Alpinist Best outdoor watch of the 5 that also looks great for indoor occasions, most unusual dial
    3. Sarb 033 fantastic quality and also works well for casual or formal occasions.
    5. Hamilton Khaki - cool military/field watch styling.

Great opening scene & music - very creative.
I'm not sure if you mention this in your text - but 'under $500' for most of these watches really means the discounted e-tailer price. The Visodate, for example, lists in the $700 - $800 area. But that's OK - grey market is fine for $1000 & under watches (as you mention in another show).

  • @Gravy_Master

I just started getting really into watches in the last year or so and subscribed to your RUclips channel a few days ago. You definitely have THE BEST channel as far as I'm concerned for watches. I have been considering a Hamilton Khaki automatic and was literally about to order one today but I held back. I've read a few reviews here and there about people owning ones that are rated to 100m water resistance and have gotten condensation under the crystal just from swimming or getting the watch a little wet in the sink. Do you know anything about this or have you heard it's an issue? I am not wealthy and spending 4 or 5 hundred bucks on a watch is nothing petty for me, so I would be livid if I wasted that cash on a defective watch.

Great video! I, basically, agree with you with a slight difference in order. I actually bought my first automatic watch recently and it was an Orient Star Classic. Before I found the Orient I was looking at the Tissot Visodate, sarb033 and sarb035 and I still consider those to be some of the best watches under $500. My next watch will, however, probably be the Seiko Alpinist, which I find absolutely beautiful.

I couldn't help but imagine how many times you must have walked back and forth in front of your video camera on the ground for that intro segment. hahaha.
Great video, TGV, this "price conscious" videos are great to do from time to time... so many watches out there, so little time. You could literally do 5 watches today, and yet, do 5 more watches next month and they would ALL have their merit. But it's great for viewers to hear and see different watches and learn about them.

I have the Alpinist (finally persuaded by TGV after 4 years dithering...), and its the most versatile practica, beautiful and commented on piece I've ever owned.. On Canvas for scout camps , hill walking.. back on Tan Leather Aviator for the Sales conference. (and trust me.. it does look good even with a grey suit). Absolutely the poodles privates.... :) and unusually it grows even more on you with ownership....A heritage piece of the future :). Oddly enough two friends who both own Explorer 2's have both bought one as their daily beaters.

Loved the intro with your best friend, walking around NYC! Very cool! The Orient Star .... Who makes the movement ? Good looking watch... My first watch was a Hamilton, back when they were still made in the US, I think! This was a great video!

+Bryan Peeler Thank you! The Orient is completely "in-house" so it is entirely made by Orient themselves.
Just out of interest, do you still have that Hamilton? A USA build Hamilton, very cool.

I have got inspired (OK, obsessed) by one cheap watch.
The nature of my work is that Im battering my watch quite often so I decided to look for a cheap one that I wouldnt mind to scratch.
I love divers and I love Seiko (Marinemaster is the best looking diver and Im ready to argue!). I came across Sea Urchin and although I always new about this watch, I somehow sort of overlooked it for its price. But damn! What a lovely watch that is! And I love it all the more for its price! This is my second Seiko and Im gonna get more.

Great review! I have the Hamilton and because of your review and the review from 555Gear, I bought a Seiko SKX175. I was fully expecting to have to pay $1000's to have a great collection, but it looks like you don't have to go broke doing it. Though I do have my eye on a Speedy and will have one.

The black dial Visodate was my choice for my first automatic. Second choice was the black dial Tissot LeLocle. Then, through your videos I discovered the Seiko SARB series, which impressed me for their quality / price ratio, but I couldn't find any that would totally meet my tastes. So I was going for the Visodate, but later I stumbled on the Seiko Presage SRP467J2, and I was sold. Same quality of the Visodate for 100 Euros less. A few weeks ago I sent you a PM with the pictures of my Presage. :)

+Kipras Petravičius I've tried it and compared to the Visodate. They're both classy and well made, the Visodate I think is more versatile and can go with less formal clothing, the LeLocle is a bit more dressy and fancy. but still very refined. They have same quality and good ETA movements; price / quality ratio is good, but I think the Japanese like Seiko often cost a bit less and offer same quality, even if they don't look as classy and facy as the Tissots. All in all it's a matter of tastes, the best thing you can do is try them in person and see what you like better. Personally I like better the Visodate over the LeLocle but only because it has day / date; in the end I went for my Seiko Presage just because it costs less.
In this price range you can check out Tissot Visodate and Lelocle, Hamilton Jazzmaster, Seiko SARB033 and 035, Seiko Presage SRP467J2 and J1, Junkers Bauhaus 6050-2 and (but they cost more) Archimede 1950's and Hamilton Intra-matic.
