    The Mercedes 7G tronic gearbox / 722.9 transmission was introduced in 2003. Early cars DID NOT feature an accessible torque converter drain plug, meaning your Mercedes auto transmission service will be limited to about 5L because you won’t be able to drain oil from the torque converter. Not sure when this changed, but follow the video and look for the access port!
    There is the possibility of two Mercedes torque converter drain plugs 8mm & 10mm. The torque converter plug tightening torques are 10nm and 15nm respectively.
    If you can drain the oil from the torque converter on your Mercedes, you will get another 2L out.

      Hi, what you need to do is start the engine (tranny will spin too) and this will refill the torque converter by taking fluid from the pan. Then, with the engine running, you top up the transmission pan from underneath through the drain plug. Finally, once the transmission is up to temperature, you drain off any excess fluid to achieve the correct fluid level. This video may interest you because it shows the full process. ruclips.net/video/tda4zokL4Os/видео.html Thanks, Phil

    This is freaking awesome. I am changing the fluid in my W5A330 trans right now. I have a question about the screw. Getting a new one will be hard. Can I replace with equivalent from a hardware store and use locktite?

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  10 месяцев назад

      Hi, thanks, glad you are liking the vid! if you don’t have a new drain plug to fit then you can use the original one, I have done this before with no issues. I think this might be a better option than getting a new one from the hardware store because there is a chance you might get the wrong thread size and damage the thread on the torque converter. To reuse the original drain plug, clean it up really well with brake cleaner, apply a drop of loctite to the thread. Clean the thread on the torque converter drain plug and refit the drain plug immediately, while it it clean and dry. Once you have refilled the tranny and primed it, you can inspect the drain plug to make sure it isn’t leaking (whilst keeping your fingers cross but it should work ok). Hope that helps and the rest of the job goes smoothly! Cheers, Phil

    Hey there, when doing this service do we add all 9 liters to the pan at once then prime and check fluid level?

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Год назад +2

      Hi, no, my personal view is that it is best to do it in stages. My advise is to refill with 5L if you haven't drained the torque converter, 7L if you have. Prime the system and then with the engine running, top up the tranny with the required amount (keep checking to see if it is running back out, when it starts to run back, do the temperature and level check). Bear in mind, 9L is the absolute maximum and in the vast majority of servicing (even by the main dealer), the full amount will never be drained, as they wouldn't disconnect and drain all of the various pipes etc. I have a video that shows the whole process: ruclips.net/video/tda4zokL4Os/видео.html Hope this helps!

    QUESTION: Very informative video however I wouldn't have the know how to do it myself. I'm just not good with spanners!
    My 2008 E320 CDi Sport is due an ATF change. I was speaking to a guy who uses one of those LAUNCH X-501 Auto Gearbox mega flush machines. He told me it drains the oil (including the torque converter), it then flushes the complete system and then refills with new oil along with some conditioner additive. He also said the flushing process cleans the existing filter and any build up in the pan and there is no need to replace it. Does that sound right?

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Год назад +1

      Honestly, it doesn’t sound right to me but I don’t have any direct experience of using that sort of system. If the correct fluid is used, you don’t need conditioners etc. I would be really wary to ensure the correct fluid goes back in. Also, I can’t see any way that the existing filter can be as clean as a new one. Remember filters are designed to capture and hold particulates. Finally, the worst particles, metal shavings etc will all be in the bottom of the transmission pan, it’s really hard to clean this out without wiping it properly. My advice: get a price from a Mercedes dealer and maybe a good independent Mercedes specialist and compare it to the “Launch” method. There probably won’t be a huge difference in price and I think it would be better to use somewhere that is experienced with these cars and transmission. Hope that helps!

    Same procedure for 5G-Tronic box mate? Or doesn't that one have a torque converter drain plug/inspection hole? Thanks very much indeed!

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Год назад

      Hi, I’m told the procedure is very similar but haven’t done a 5G yet, so can’t confirm if there are any small changes but I think you will be ok. One thing on the 5G that people sometimes do is change the electrical fitting where it goes into the transmission. Again, really sorry, don’t know what is involved with this. Torque converter is pot luck, it always used to be there on the older transmissions then they delisted it on early 7G’s (when they thought they could be sealed for life, only to change their minds!) So, I think you will have a torque converter plug but if not, just change what fluid you can (this is usually about half the total quantity). Many of these trannys don’t get serviced at all, so you will still be doing your bit to look after it. Hope that helps! Thanks, Phil

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi @grygarek you can't fill these transmissions from the top hence the complicated procedure to fill and level check from the bottom. I think Mercedes originally designed the transmission as "filled for life" but then realised later that it would indeed need servicing... Cheers, Phil

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Год назад +1

      Hi @adamsolowianiuk9462 I think most people drain the pan first but It doesn't doesn't really matter if you drain the pan first and then the torque converter or vice versa. You run the engine and step through the transmission gears / positions to prime the torque converter, the various pipes and internals etc. Then with everything primed and the engine / transmission still running, you top up and set the level. It's a little hard to explain but the overflow pipe in the pan allows you to set the level in the transmission pan but only if a certain amount of fluid is held in the transmission by it continuing to run and the system having been primed. Hope that helps! Thanks, Phil

I did look at the bell house hole to look for the drain plug on the torque converter and find nothing. I did drain out 7 quart of old transmission fluid. There is 2 quart more old transmission fluid was still inside of the torque converter.

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, Bryan, here is a comment from another viewer that explains how to do it: " if you don‘t have a drain plug in the torque converter you can still drain it. This is the method I use on my 5G 722.6 (2006) trans which pumps the old fluid out of the TC and cooler. Fill your transmission as you were, add an extra liter too. Now locate the two trans lines running into the radiator cooler from the transmission. One line will be running to a higher point on the side of the transmission, this is the return line. you will need flare wrenches to disconnect the line at the cooler. Once disconnect slip a short length piece of 5/8“ ID or 16mm rubber heater hose onto the connector at the cooler, add a hose clamp to keep it from slipping off. Hold a clear sided 3 liter container to catch the fluid. Before you start the car, You will be seeing dark fluid being pumped out at first then after about 2 liters is pumped out the fluid will turn bright red. Have someone start the car telling them you will yell when to shut off the car. If you have your wifey do this, tell her ahead of time that you are going to yell loudly to turn off the engine so see doesn‘t get excited or upset. Reconnect the return line and then top off the fluid level as you normally would." Hope that helps! Thanks, Phil

    Why would there be any benefit to putting the car in neutral? Even if the transmission was in gear, with no oil pressure and at hand crank speeds I would not have expected any noticeable resistance on the crankshaft side of the torque converter.

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  10 месяцев назад +1

      There probably isn't and benefit but as I had to step past it anyway, I thought why not just leave it in that position for a few seconds, just like the other gears... Just a little bit of OCD on my part! Cheers, Phil

    Hello, I own a Mercedes w212. I replaced the engine, but before I installed the transmission on the engine, I poured new oil into the torque converter nozzle, and I think I put a large amount, about one liter, in addition to what was inside. Zero I feel that the engine revs up a lot and the car has not started yet or it is taking off slowly. I face this problem only between the first and second gears, and the rear speed I feel the most. Is this because of the much oil that you added to the torque converter?

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Год назад +1

      Hi @nooraldin380 The Mercedes transmission is very sensitive to fluid level and if you added an extra 1L, this is almost certainly the reason for the gear slipping that you describe. I have a full transmission service video here: ruclips.net/video/tda4zokL4Os/видео.html but I recommend is that you skip along to the fluid level check section at 18mins 52secs, get the transmission up to temperature and drain off the excess (all show in the video that I just linked to). Hope that helps! Thanks, Phil

    The oil that came out appeared clean ??
    What is the need to drain the torque convertor ? If/ when you change the transmission fluid does that not change the fluid in the torque con ??

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Год назад +1

      Hi, the oil that was coming out of the torque converter wasn’t clean but it probably looked ok(ish) because I service the transmission regularly. There is about 2L of fluid in the torque converter, it doesn’t come out when you drain the pan, so if you don’t drain it, you end up doing a partial fluid change / service. Cheers, Phil

      Hi, to be sure, you will need to check out which tranny your car is running. Do a little bit of searching on wikipedia for example, maybe it's a C class W208? You can check to see what tranny's were fitted. Here's an example: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_CLK-Class#Transmission Sounds like yours is an earlier car and may be running the 5 speed auto (5G-tronic)? If so, you probably do have a torque converter drain plug in the same position. Thanks, Phil

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  2 месяца назад +1

      The torque converter will refill when you run the tranny, so you don’t have to try to refill it through the little drain plug. Although, you will need to level check the transmission and add more if required. Cheers, Phil

    Mercedes-Benz DOES NOT recommend draining the torque converter. 40k miles drain and fill. I personally like loosening the valve body to drain even more fluid. Should have 6 to 8 liters on hand just in case. I love working on my car. Transmission fluid can be tough on the kidneys, so take precautions.

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  3 месяца назад

      Hi, Thanks for the comment! I wasn't aware about the potential issues with kidneys, I'll be even more careful not to get it on my skin! Lots of people ask all of the time about draining the torque converter (hence the video). I think, even if not recommended by MB, then people are used to doing it either on these cars or others. The drain and refill of the torque converter went really smoothly and it reprimed quickly with no issues. Also from memory, you get just over another liter out, so on balance, I think it is worth doing. Cheers, Phil

    7G blue fluid not red

    • @ReviveMyRide
      @ReviveMyRide  Год назад +1

      Hi, thanks for your comment! There is a lot of confusion out there regarding fluid types for this gearbox. The majority of 7G tronic / 722.9 transmissions take the red fluid (early cars from around 2003 onwards). Then, around 2010, with the introduction of stop / start technology, Mercedes change the fluid to blue. It's best to stick to the fluid type / colour that your car had in it originally. There is a great write up by FCP Euro here if you would like more information! blog.fcpeuro.com/mercedes-7-speed-transmission-service-walkthrough-722.9-transmissions Thanks, Phil

      @@kassem2950 I don’t think there is a risk of damage to your transmission. These transmissions are very robust. It is probably more of a performance thing: transmission starting back up in drive ready to go more quickly, fluid more resistant to shear and breaking down. Maybe on the wrong fluid, your gear changes may have become more clunky over time. The blue will be better suited to the stop start requirement. Don’t worry!
